visited the village with local Mayor, Ralepan e

Some of the r esidents of Mokut ung recently

joined protest action agains t poor ser vice delivery in

the area, a ppeared in court a nd are n ow waiting

with accused in other villages to see wha t is is going

to happen with them. One of the issues they are

complaining about is RDP housing. The

government delegation experiened the relativeremoteness of the area for themselves, the less than

ideal condition of the roads, t he lack of electricity

and water, but they could not phone anyone about it

(no cellphone reception - for a cha nge not t heir

    direct responsibility).

Mr Lekganyane, after handing over one of the

houses to a family (the one on th e front page)

explained to residents that RDP housing is not only

about the provision of housing in the rural areas,

but that RDP housing projects are also launched in

the developing urban areas where young people,

    starting with a career, qualify.

People told the MEC th at th ey are unha ppy

about a n umber of issues and it became clear th at

the administration around RDP housing in the area

is not what it should be. Nobody was sur e who was

on the list of beneficiaries and t hey complained tha t

the selection of beneficiaries was n ot tran sparen t

authority should compile a new list and urged

officials and t he local governm ent t o ensure th at t he

transparency of the administration of lists be

improved. In the mean time, Platinum Gazette ha s

learned that although the issue was su pposed to be

sorted out a t th e event, two lists are n ow in the

    process of being compiled.

People told the newspaper they were glad the

MEC an d the Ma yor visited them , saying nobody

ever came here, th is is the ma yors first time in his

official capacity, but lam ented t hat they a lmost

could not benefit from the event in th eir village.

The people from Kgautswa ne (Rietfontein), up on

the mountain, tried to hijack our event, bringing

their pr oblems her e, while it was supposed to be an

opportu nity for us to air our grievances.

We also did not like the entertainment very

much, Winnie Mashaba would have been better. Allof us a lso did not get something t o eat. The catering

    was lacking.

Whatever the case, 33 houses that were not

where ar e the other 17 h ouses, because the whole

project (in two phases ) are supposed t o be 50

Weet-Bix is one of the countrys favourite breakfast foods. It is commonlyseen as a breakfast cereal while it was originally intended to be a wheat

    biscuit.

The first form of Weet-Bix was created in the early 1900s and was

originally called Granose. In the 1920s a company called Grain Products

created a new and better tasting sweetened biscuit they called Weet-Bix.

Bennison Osborne in Australia invented the original cereal. He set out to

make is product more palatable than the Granose in the market at the

time. He tried his new product on his little nieces and nephews until he

had it perfected. In 1928 he registered the name Weetbix and large-

    scale production started.

His friend Malcom Ian Mac Macfarlane from New Zealand, joined

Bennison or Benn as everyone called him. Mac proved to be a very good

marketer. The product was so successful that in October 1928 they took

Weetbix to New Zealand. There it was so popular that the men soon sawthat it would be difficult to provide the country with an adequate supply

of Weetbix from Australia. With the financial backing of Mr Arthur

Shannon they established two factories, one in Auckland and one in

    Christchurch.

Benn and Mac also exported the product to South Africa where they

obtained further financial backing and installed a factory in Cape Town.

They formed the British & African Cereal Company Pty. Ltd. The

company was registered in London and Benn was the managing director.

The company also expanded to England. Here they called their product

Weetabix. At the height of the companys success in England, in 1936,

Benn sold his shareholding to the directors and left the company to go to

the USA. Weetabix was not successful in the USA. Benn eventually

became the wartime supervisor of the Army Air Force Base in Zephyr

Hills, Florida. After the war in 1946 he took his wife and three daughters

back to Australia where he died in 1980. In 1992 Weetabix successfully

entered the USA market from Canada.

The English variant of Weet-bix is now exported to around 80 countries

worldwide. In South Africa Weet-Bix is manufactured by Bolandse

    Koperatiewe Molenaars (Bokomo) in Malmesbury.

    10 NEWS 19 FEBRUARY2010

Is fighting crime a priority forFighting crime came under the spotlight

again this week when president J acob

Zuma s office did not accept 23 000 protest

    letters about crime.

Solidarity tr ied delivering the lett ers on

    Tuesday.

According to Zumas spokesperson, MrVincent Magwenya, the campaign by

Solidarity was misleading and tha t th ey

would not support such a campaign.

The campaign was launched last week,

after th e Stat e of Nat ion address of which

only 2% or 115 words were d irected at t he

    fight against crime.

Thousan ds of South Africans reacted to

Solidaritys call to writ e letter s of protest

about crime in the country. Writers were

asked to request Zuma to make fighting

crime his num ber one priority.

Magwenya said tha t Solidarit y reacted in

haste and sh ould have arran ged an

appointmen t with t he na tional police chief,

    Comm. Bheki Cele first .

We asked readers whether they feel that

fightin g crime is a p riority for government

or not?Mnr.

Mokutung headman, Emmanuel Mmopanesaid: I dont think enough is done. Theyare failing on that one. They arrestsomeone and the next day that person isback telling us that he or she is on bail. Ifthe president can pay a lot of attention tocrime rather than focus on unnecessarymarriages it will be good.

Mr Hadson Masuku said: They are notdoing enough. They must hire morepolice and security companies.

Ms Patience Kgedi said: Yes, it is apriority for government, but they must doeven more than what they are doing.

Me.

Mr Fanie Tonga andMr Jeremia Kodisaid: Thegovernment is

working. They mustarrest people butbefore long they areback. We are notsure how that isworking. The waybail is granted iswrong. They mustlook at that.

Mnr Beukes van Zyl s: Watter misdaad?Daar is mos nie misdaad in Suid Afrikanie.

Ms Konradine Vermaak said: Theyshould have accepted the letters andshown that they are interested in thisnation because they are not doing theirjobs.

Mr Prince Masuku said: Crime is aproblem. It must be a priority forgovernment. They should accept lettersabout crime to the president.

Mr Tshepo Mkhondo said: They have todo more. Crime is a problem. It is apriority for them, but they must do more.

    our government or not?

Me.

Me.

Mr Meckson Mathoto said: They dont doenough about crime.

Mr Robert Ngwatle said: Crime is not aproblem.

Ms. Maggie Matjeke said: It is a problem. They are trying but it is not working.

Mnr.
