Startup for Project SunriseLast week Frida y saw a joyful day for ASA Metals a t

Dilokong Chrome with t he official st art up of Project

Sunrise, when the President of Sinosteel Mr Huang

Tianwen, visited th e completed expan sion project.

Sinosteel, a Chinese st ate controlled compan y, is

the majority shareholder in ASA metals with 60

percent of the sha res. The other sha res is held by

Limdev.

ASA Meta ls successfully commissioned its n ew

600 000 ton per a nnum pelletising and sintering

plant dur ing July 2009 with the first sinteredpellets produced at 12:20 on Sun day the 12 Ju ly.

The successful commissioning of the pelletising and

sintering plant signified the first major milestone in

ASA Metals expan sion.

The plant will beneficiate chromite concentrate

into pellets th at will be supplied to the new

furnaces that ha s just been completed. The two

furna ces (top photograph) ar e 66 MVA closed

furnaces, each with its own pre-heaters.

The utilization of pellets in the new furnaces will

boost overall charge chrome production capacity to

around 400 000 tons per year.

The pelletising and sintering plant is scheduled to

ramp up to full production by the end of the calendar

year. ASA Metals has st arted dur ing Jan uary 2008

with an extensive development program to increase

their ferrochrome productioncapacity with 300 percent.

The whole project was completed well within the

timeschedule, budget and safety objectives of theproject.

Mr Huan g and his party was hosted by the MD and

CEO of ASA Metals, Mr Richard Zhang, and the COO,

Mr Herman Smith, at th e new completed project. They

did an extensive tour of Dilokong Chrome with the

highlight at t he new furna ces where a plaque was

unveiled by Mr Hu ang outside the control room an d

office block outside t he th e new furn aces.

Speaking at the district celebration of

social development m onth a t Riba Cross

last week Friday, Cllr Magabe told a huge

audience that the social developkment

cluster h as ma de substantial progress in

alleviating poverty and creating caring

commu nities for older persons. He said

people should acknowledge and celebrate

the value a nd contribution of older persons

in society, emphas ise the mess age of

respect for older persons as a corners tone

of our cultural background and identity,

identify and record the eledst living

persons in the district and facilitate

support a nd welfare services to older

persons and vulnerable groups.He said the Childrens Charter in the

Constitution demand from people to take

care of children an d that mothers and

sisters and brothers in home based care

facilities should not lose hope in takin g

care of children in these fascilities.

With regard s to disabled people the

district mayor told the audience that he is

awar e of efforts to revive the Dist rict

Disabled Forum. He also called on the

media to part ner with NGOs and

government in the district to alleviate the

plight of vulnerable groups.

BlownawayThe ATM at Temba Garage in

Burgersfort was blown to pieces on last

week Friday morning just after 03:00.

The robbers held the petrol attendants as

well as the security guard at gunpoint

while two blasts took care of opening up

the ATM.

The robbers who were heavily armed

even showed a customer t o get awa y from

the pumps. Before they escaped with an

undisclosed amount of money the men

fired shots into the air. Nobody was hurt.By the time of going to press to arr ests

have been made.

Villagers withmany problems

Mapareng village came in the spotlight last

week when t he villagers blocked th e R36

with rocks and 74 of them were arrested.

This was in protest of not having any

electricity. They are however unh appy

about more than just tha t.

A RDP project was left unfinished an d

many of the houses that were finished are

cracking. In many places the trenches tha t

were dug for founda tions of the plann ed

RDP houses are still visible. Some of the

toilets that were constructed are sagging

and standing totally scew.

They are also struggling with a water

reservoir that has not ha d water for the last

year. According to resident s th e defective

pump was replaced with another defective

pump.

They have brought th ese issues under theatt ention of the mu nicipality (see

document on the right), but so far these

issues have not been addressed.

Rough ride on Steelpoort/Lydenburg roadThe sad state of the road connecting the R37 to Burgersfort and the R555 between Burgersfort and Middelburg

was once again highlighted this week when frustrated motorists attached six sign boards next to the road.

The road car ries high volumes of heavy traffic to and from Steelpoort an d are in places littered with potholes.

The recent rains also contributed to the fast deteriorating state of the road. In some cases motorists find it easier

to drive on th e side of the road t han on it.

This road has n ot yet been listed as a priority to be rebuild at this stage. From time to time at tempts a re made

to fix stret ches of potholes, but is seems t hat it is impossible for those fixing potholes to keep up with the fast

rate of deterioration.

Tiida wins C-segment award in theannual Kinsey Report - third year running

For the third year running, the Nissan Tiida has won the fiercely contested C-segment

award in the annual Kinsey Report on parts pricing. Confirming Nissans competitiveparts pricing was a second place overall (and first for service parts) in the MPV category

for the Grand Livina 1.6 Acenta. This proves one thing: that when you buy a Tiida,

youre buying a vehicle that has been designed to be affordable not just at the point of

sale, but also in terms of the ownership experience.

The Tiida 1.6 Acenta on which the research was conducted had the most affordable parts

basket overall, as well as in the categories of service, repair and body parts. A selection

of eight items used in routine servicing cost just under R2 000 in total on the Tiida a

figure beaten only by a handful of entry-level vehicles in the entire survey. While the

three-year/90 000 km service plan is included in the price of the Tiida, affordable parts

Traffic light relief or not?During the last week, various sets of the

newly installed sets of traffic lights st art ed

working.

Although some (such as the one at the

Steelpoort tur n-off) were almost

immediat ely put out of action again, the

tra nsition from being without p ropersignage to working tr affic lights went

relatively smooth.

This week we asked readers whether they

I would like to express my concerns towards the Local Criminal Record Centre, this

departmen t is situa ted in th e local police station in Burgersfort.

On 31 October 2009 I had a bur glar in my house, luckily he was caught in th e act and

all the items were recovered. The next morning (after a visit by the police) I was

required to report t o the P olice sta tion in order to give the P olice my statement of the

incident.

At the police station I was told that the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) was

contacted a nd ar e on their way t o come and ta ke possible finger prints of the bur glar.

This was a pproximately 09:30 the m orning. I was further inst ructed not to touch

anything in my house that might have been handled by the burglar as it ma y jeopardize

the case.

So the time went by and n o LCRC in sight. I t hen decided to phone the police station to

determine what t ime will the LCRC be attending to my house. On the first attempt no

one answered the ph one, on the second at tempt I wa s required to phone again after 2

minutes a s they will try and determ ine where the LCRC is.

I was then t old that the LCRC is busy with a mu rder case and will be at my house after

they ar e done. Later th e afternoon I phoned the police stat ion a gain without an y luck,

only on th e second at tempt t he phone were answered an d again th e police were not sure

when th e LCRC will pitch. I then decided to phone a Snr Superintendent to establish

whether she can a ssist. She was surprised tha t no one pitched and she immediately

climbed on their case, again with no luck. The same night at 19:00 one of the senior

personnel at the police station phoned me to apologise for the LCRC that did not come

to my house. The senior member t hen rema rked tha t th ey will be attending to my house

the n ext morning (which a lso did not ha ppen), they only came around a t appr oximately

15:00 that day.

If this is the type of service tha t residents can expect from the LCRC in Bur gersfort I

reckon we all mu st be worried. I experienced firsthan d the inconvenience tha t th e

LCRC placed my whole family in for the whole of a Sunday and Monday.

Grade 12 learners from Calvin College collected money during their 40 Days

celebration. They performed all over town and aimed to raise money for a good cause.

In the end the money they managed to raise was used to buy toys and things neededto Kids World at Twin City centre.
