CITIZEN JOURNALIST STORY

Women can start their own businessThe Clothing Bank in Paarl’s mission is toempower unemployed mothers throughenterprise development so that they canbecome financially and socially independ-ent.

The first Clothing Bank was established inCape Town in 2010, in response to the growingproblem of unemployment amongst singlemothers and the lack of support that they re-ceive from the father of their children.

Of all mothers in South Africa, 40% are sin-gle and for single mothers unemploymentrates are over 60%. Less than 50% of fatherscontribute anything towards their child’s wel-fare, which leaves the single mother with nochoice but to rely on the state for welfare.

Child grants are R280 per month per childand with an average of two children per house-hold, families are surviving on welfare of R560per month. One litre of milk and one loaf ofbread costs R20 per day or R600 per month,so this means that children raised by a singlemotherarehighly likelyto live inpovertywithlittle prospects for their future.

The Clothing Bank runs a two-year holistictraining programme that helps unemployedmothers to start a small retail trading busi-ness. “We source excess clothing from the ma-jor retailers, manufacturers, and the generalpublic in South Africa and use this clothing

as the tool to teach. Afterthe initial training, we sellthe women a limitedamount of clothing (R2 500per month) at significantlydiscounted prices. Theysell this clothing in theircommunities for an expect-ed profit of R3 000 permonth which is enough tofeed, clothe and educate awoman’s family,”saidCEOat the Clothing Bank inPaarl, Tracey Collins.

They also support thewomen with mentoring toensure that when they facean obstacle, they have asupport network to findtheir own creative solu-tions to the problem.

“We build their self-es-teem by showing them that they have the poten-tial to be successful through real success sto-ries. They have the opportunity to earn an in-come while they learn which tends to theimmediate needs of their family. We believe inthe growth of a whole person and provide train-ingthatacknowledgesallaspectsof life, not justbusiness skills e.g. financial literacy, microbusiness skills, life skills, parenting skills, sell-

ing, merchandising skillsand computer skills.”

The women are also re-quiredtoworkatTheCloth-ing Bank at least once aweek where they gain workexperience in aspects suchas stock control, receivingand despatching stock andmerchandising.

The Winelands branch isthesecondClothingBanktobe opened and the aim is tohave at least 50 women onthe programme by the endof the year.

Women are recruitedfrom all over the Winelandsat Open Days. The selectionprocess is intensive and in-cludes a process of inter-viewing, assessments and

volunteering work. The Clothing Bank is based at Spilo in

Paarl and is easily accessible by train or taxi, making this an opportunity for unemployedmothers in the broader Winelands area.

For details, visit www.theclothingbank.org.za or call 021 862 1146 or visit their officeat the Spilo Building on the corner of Oos-bosch and Jan van Riebeeck Drive in Paarl.

Heart disease on the riseAs South Africa’s population becomes in-creasingly urbanised and less active, seri-ous heart conditions areon the rise and reaching“alarming proportions,”according to Dr AnchenLaubscher,medicaldirec-tor of the Netcare Hospi-tal Division.

“One in three men andone in fourwomenwill haveaheartconditionofonekindor another by the time theyreach the age of 60,” shesays.Laubscher says in recent

years South Africans have become more sed-entary.“We are exercising less and our diets have

deteriorated as we are consuming more andmore processed and junk food. This is badnews for our health in general and more spe-cifically, for our hearts. Cardiovascular riskfactorssuchashypertension, highcholesterollevels, diabetes and obesity have increaseddramatically.”Laubscheradds thatbeingoverweight,hav-

ing high blood pressure, with uncontrolledhigh blood sugar levels or high cholesterol, all put us at risk of heart disease.“Most people are unaware that they are de-

veloping cardiovascular disease. During theearly stages, complications of risk factorssuch as diabetes, high cholesterol and highblood pressure developwithout anywarning.Because there may be no indications that

you are developing heart disease, you shoulddiscuss your risk factors with your doctor, particularly if there is a history of heart dis-

easeoranyof theaforementionedrisk factorsin the family.

You should have yourbloodpressurecheckedatleast annually if the re-sults of a test are withinnormal limits, ormore of-ten if the results are bor-derline or high.“When a condition

such as high blood pres-sure is detected early, timeous and effectivetreatment can reverse theprogression of heart dis-ease and make a world ofdifference.”

Another commondisease that canaffect theheart and cardiovascular system is coronaryheart disease (CHD). CHD is usually causedby a build-up of fatty deposits of cholesteroland other materials on the walls of the arter-ies.Thearteriesbecomenarrowedbythefattydeposits, which restricts the supply of bloodandoxygentotheheartandothervitalorgans.“A heart attack will result if an artery is

blocked by the fatty deposits. Some peoplehave a genetic predisposition to the build-upof cholesterol and an unhealthy lifestyle in-creases the risk.”Heart disease often develops in people who

smoke, eat foods high in saturated fats, havehigh stress levels and get little exercise.Laubscher advises SouthAfricans to adopt

a diet that is low in saturated fats and richin foods suchas fish, rawnuts, vegetables andfruit. Those who smoke should stop whileheavy drinkers should limit their drinking.A moderate amount of exercise weekly hasbeen shown to have numerous benefits.

Your personal magnetism is strong and you attract appreciation, affection, andattention at this time. Feelings of love, a desire for beauty, and the urge to be creative

are strong. You beautify your surroundings and pay particular attention to yourappearance. This is a good time to treat yourself or do something fun just for you.

(22 December - 21 January)CAPRICORN

Communications are delayed or interfered with now. Somehow, the message you intendedand the one that was received or perceived are not quite the same. There is quite a bit ofstatic on the line, metaphorically and quite possibly literally as well. You also find that theway others talk or try to convey their ideas is grating and just goes against your grain.

(21 January - 20 February)

AQUARIUS

Frustrations, trials, and difficult, critical decisions are key issues at this time. Others are notreceptive to your ideas and they do not express interest in your work. If you have a

business, for example, you probably want to cut down on advertising and slow down onexpansion, or even cut down on production, employees, and expenses.

PISCES(20 February - 21 March)

In general, it is best to use this time for analysis, reading, and clarifying issues that areimportant to you personally. Avoid trying to reach out with your ideas, such as in public

speaking, advertising, or promotions of any kind. Also avoid discussions on broad, complextopics like politics, religion, or philosophy.

ARIES(21 March - 21 April)

Self-discipline, training, persevering through a dry or slow period, and workingquietly or in meager circumstances are themes in this time period. You have theability and stamina to concentrate, to work carefully and thoroughly, and toaccomplish something modest, yet of real practical value and substance now.

TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)

A weighty and seemingly unavoidable situation in your love life triggers deepemotions. You may have to end a toxic relationship or face the "death" of someone

or something you have cherished. (Death is used here to mean either radicalrevision, complete resolution and finality, or in rare cases, actual physical death.)

GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)

You have a low tolerance for boredom and following rules today and you make some creativechanges and discoveries, experiment with new possibilities, or invent a new way of doing

things. You don't want to follow anybody else's lead at this time, but fortunately you are ablefind ways to be yourself and even be a little "crazy" without offending or upsetting others.

LEO(23 July - 24 August)

You are fascinated by the mysterious now. Unsolved or puzzling problems and thehidden or behind the scenes aspects of a situation interest you most, and you delve andprobe until you discover the truth. An interest in psychology or other peoples' secrets

comes to the fore. You enjoy spy, mystery, and supernatural stories.

VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)

Unexpected pleasures, new friends, or a more playful, adventurous attitude in yourrelationships make this time period stimulating and delightful. You want a breakfrom your usual routine and, because you are willing to experiment and to be

spontaneous, you are likely to experience a refreshing change of pace.

CANCER(22 June - 23 July)

You feel lucky and are apt to overestimate yourself or the possibilities insome situation. Don't over commit yourself or promise too much, asyou're apt to feel foolish or overextended later. Your mood is jovial,

however, and social relations are good.

LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)

You tend to be tense, "wired", on edge, a bit nervous or jumpy, and you will need to take alittle time to breathe deeply and settle yourself. The pace of the day may make this

difficult, however. You are apt to be too quick to respond or respond inappropriately toquestions, tests, quizzes, etc. If you consciously slow down, you will do a lot better.

SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)

You tend to be tense, "wired", on edge, a bit nervous or jumpy, and you will need to takea little time to breathe deeply and settle yourself. The pace of the day may make thisdifficult, however. You are apt to be too quick to respond or respond inappropriately toquestions, tests, quizzes, etc. If you consciously slow down, you will do a lot better.

SAGITTARIUS(23 November - 22 December)

Method:

Drain chickpeas thoroughly and pulse in a food processor to

roughly chop. Add grated carrot, baby marrows, onion, garlic,

cumin, ground and chopped coriander, parsley, chilli powder,

flour and seasoning and pulse to combine. Gently form

mixture into patties about 10 cm in diameter by 2-3 cm thick.

Dust with a little flour and fry for about 3-5 minutes, or until

crispy and heated through. Slice rolls in half and toast. Place

Aandieanderkant isditongelukkig

ook so dat ’n mens baie maklik so ge-woond raak aan baie skuld, dat ’n jylater maar net meer en meer skuldmaak.Daar is soveel advertensieswatdie leen van geld so aanloklik laat lyk,dat ’nmens baiemaklik verstrik raakdaarin. Koop nou en betaal later. Dieterugbetaal is anderdag se probleme.

gaan wanneer dit kom by geld leen.

Blues begin egter stelselmatig syritme terugkry nadat hy vars bene opdie veld bring.

FOTO: CHRIS BENJAMIN
