“My omstandighede dryf my om my studiesklaar te maak.

dierlike afval, swamagtigespore, vere, kakkerlakresteof stofmyte.

) Gereelde niesbuie;) Loperige neus of

postnasale drup;) Die behoefte aan ’n

hele boks sneesdoekiesper dag;

) Buitemuurseaktiwiteitevirrustigemiddaete beplan; baie allergielyers vind dat hulle hooi-koorssimptome erger is gedurende die oggenden op winderige dae;

) Trek ander klere aan of neem ’n vinnigestort wanneer jy van buite af inkom, om so diestuifmeel wat op jou klere, hare en vel versamelhet, te verwyder;

) Laat jou klere binnenshuis droog word ge-durende die bestuiwingseisoen;

) Maak seker vensters is toe wanneer jy permotor reis.

Bron: News24

Stuifmeel kan hooikoors veroorsaak

How to solve “what shall I do with my life”As matriculants gear up to write one of themost important exams in their life, a largenumber are facing an additional source ofstress – their indecision about what they aregoing to study next year.

“It is important forschool leaversinthissitu-ation to deal decisively with the issue, as push-ing this stress to the back of their minds whiletryingto focusontheirexamswill impactnega-tively on their ability to perform to the bestof their ability,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Di-rector of the Independent Institute of Educa-tion, SA’s largest and most accredited privatehigher education institution.

Coughlan saysthat learners in this situationconstantly battle the stresses of exams as wellas uncertainty about their future, and that thiswill take away from the all-important focus re-quired to perform when writing their papers.

She says that dealing with the issue of post-matric will allow them to direct their energiesappropriately. Coughlan advises putting asidesome time to dispose of the “what am I goingto be when I grow up”-conundrum.

“Schedule a few days to thoroughly investi-gate your options and make a decision aboutwhere it is that you want to go,” she says.

She advises learners to use this time to con-sider three aspects, which will help them de-cide on their future studies:

) Be realisticLook at your subjects and your envisaged re-

sults. It is no use aiming for medicine, whenyou did not take the requisite subjects duringyour final school years. It is equally important, even when you do have the right subjects, tobe realistic about the level of performance thatis required to get in to medicine and to havea plan B.

It is probably not a good idea to look at study-ing design, when you have never lifted a crea-

tive finger in your life. You would be doingyourself a disservice to not consider designif you are very creative - even if you did notdo Visual Arts at school. The connection be-tweenschoolandwhatyoudonext isnot total-ly linear.

Consider your subjects, marks and your in-terests; those things that make you feel happyand alive, and take it from there.

) Do your homeworkThere are countless institutions and cours-

es out there. It is no longer the case that auniversity degree is the only option if youwant a successful career – not only are thereinteresting options in the diploma and highercertificate space, but degrees themselves arenow widely available from registered privatehigher education institutions that may welloffer you an experience more suited to yourneeds.

Many private institutions offer specific ad-ditional focus areas such as work-integratedcourses with the sole aim of equipping youto perform on the job from day one. There arealso far more options available today thanthere were even five years ago – new fields, new courses, new institutions, new opportu-nities. There is a strong chance that what youhave been told at school is based mostly onwhat your teachers know and experienced, sodo your own homework.

) What do you want to do after matric?Draw up a shortlist and put your concerns

to rest once you have determined whichcourses interest you, check to see that youmeet the entrance criteria and find out whenapplications close, it is sooner than you maythink.

Diarise when the application for eachcourse needs to be submitted and get them inon time. Make sure you submit more than one

application, for more than one option to morethan one type of institution. Put your concernsaside and focus on doing your absolute bestin your final exam. “Although you won’t beworrying about your post-matric direction an-ymore, the options will simmer in your sub-conscious,andyouwillalmostcertainly,whenthe time comes, know exactly which road topursue,” Coughlan says.

You the Entrepreneur:Thinking differentlyDAVID MALHERBE

The last couple ofweeks I’ve consultedwith anumber of peo-ple who want to startnew businesses orwho have recentlystarted one. One ofthe biggest challeng-es seems to be themanagement of busi-ness finances.

Some people hear about govern-ment’s plans to support upcomingentrepreneurs and then think theyhavearight tomoneyandcontracts,althoughtheyhardlyhaveanybusi-ness experience and have no infra-structure at all.

Otherpeoplehavetroublemanag-ing the money they receive forgoodsandservicesrendered insuchaway that it will grow the business, and even more so, a book keepingsystem.

Without a thoroughrecord keeping systemyouwillnotbeabletoman-age your business’s fi-nances well.

When you earn a salary, the money you earn isyours to spend, but whenyou have a business, themoneyyoureceiveneed topay numerous expensesbefore you canuse someofwhat remains foryourself.

I say someofwhat remains, becausesomemoneymustbe retained in thebusiness to grow the enterprise.

Whenyouexchangeyoursalariedemployment for a business of yourown, one of the biggest adjustmentsis the realisation that you do not re-ally look forward to the end of themonth anymore, because it now be-comesatimeforpayingsalariesandmany other expenses.

Furthermore, you cannot shiftthe blame for things gone wrong toyourboss or anybody else anymore.

As owner of your own business thefinal responsibility rests with you.

But with the responsibility alsocomes the benefits of being yourown boss and the freedom to directyour business towards the goalsthat you’ve set for yourself. Al-though working for oneself may of-ten be challenging, the benefits andpersonal growth may perhaps out-weigh the challenges by far. Butyou’ll need to adopt a disciplinedlifestyle to make it work.

If you start a business with theidea that now you’ll have lots ofmoney to enjoy life, you’ll be sur-prised at how quickly it can disap-pear. But with discipline and work-ing wisely you can make a successof being in charge of yourowndesti-ny.

How to be fire and burn smartThe use of candles, paraffinstoves and open fires increasesduring winter, placing chil-dren at even greater risk.

Western Cape GovernmentHealth advises parent to applyfollowing safety tips to help pre-vent burn injuries from occur-ring:

) Invest in a cordless kettle.View your kettle as a weapon.

) Put all hot drinks, hot cook-ing oil and hot porridge out ofreach of children.

) Do not carry urns or pots ofboiling water around whilethere are toddlers on the flooror children running about.

) Turn pot handles awayfrom the front of the stove.

) Put candles in a deep glassbottle with sand at the bottomso the candle will be extin-guished if it falls over.

) Repair all faulty electricalplugs and leads.

) Report stolen cover plates onpower poles or substations withbroken fences or locks.

) Do not leave children unsu-pervised near matches, candles, lighters or fireworks or when theyare in or near the kitchen.

) Lock paraffin and other flam-mables, including “safe” gelsaway.

) Do not cover braai fires withsand. The heat stays in the sandforhoursandwillburnunsuspect-ing feet walking over the sand.Pour water over fires and coals.

) Do not cook eggs in a micro-wave. The shell can explode andcause severe face and eye injuries.

) Noodles cooked in a micro-wave, as well as the container theyare cooked in become extremelyhot and can cause severe burns.

) Pour cold water in the bathfirst and then add hot water. Setyour geyser to low temperatures(about 55°C). Always test the bathwater with your elbow beforebathing children.

) Avoidusingtableclothsoran-ything a child can pull on andcause hot food or liquid to spill.

) Neverholdachildwhilecook-ing.

) Test and stir all food before

serving to children to make sureit is cool enough to eat.

) Should anyone sustain a burninjury involving flames, the vic-tim should stop, drop and roll toput out the flames.

) Do not touch victims in-jured by an electrical currentbefore the current has been dis-connected– use a stick or non-conductor to avoid rescuer inju-ry or death.

) The heat from a fire, hot wa-ter or electrical burn will con-tinue to burn the tissue long af-ter the offending contact is re-moved. It is essential to stop theburning by keeping the burntbody part under cold runningtap water for 20 minutes. Do notuse ice or ice water; it can causefrostbite because the skin is al-ready damaged.

) Do not apply butter or anyoil-based product to a burn inju-ry, the oil can trap the heat and

make the burn deeper over time.Burn injuries happen in sec-

onds, but can change a person’slife forever. Recovery is a life-longprocess – it continues long afterthe person is discharged from hos-pital – and rehabilitation starts onday one.

Burn injuries not only affect theinjured, but also the families wholove and support that person, therefore Western Cape Govern-ment Health urges parents andcaregivers to be aware of the dan-gers posed and to take steps tokeep their families safe.

Matrics encouraged to take prelims seriouslyAsthepenultimatematricexami-nations are only a few weeksaway, matriculants would dowell to use the opportunity oftheir prelims to the full, an edu-cation expert says.

“The temptation is there to writethese exams off as insignificant, since many learners would alreadyhave submitted tertiary educationapplications based on their previ-ous performance.“Othershavemoved their focus to

the final exam as their last chanceto earn the points for admission toparticular programmes,” says DrFelicity Coughlan, Director of theIndependent Institute of Education,SA’s largest and most accredited

private higher education institu-tion.However, the prelims fulfil a very

important function and matricu-lants should take them as seriouslyas they do the last exam of theirschool careers.“Remember that even if you have

aconditionaloffer fromauniversityor private education provider, itcould still be withdrawn. You maystill need to rely on your perform-ance in the prelims for placementpurposes and you cannot afford toignore the fact that the results docontribute to your year mark thatis part of your investment in yourfinal result,” she says. The most important function of

the prelims though, is to give you

an opportunity to consolidate thelearning of the past twelve years, and provide you with the necessarypeace of mind to enter your final ex-ams relaxed and refreshed – amind-set which could make a significantpositive difference to your perform-ance.“Treat these exams as a measure

of where you are, and use them asa valuable tool in your preparationfor your finals,” she adds. She says learners can use the pre-

lims in several ways to boost knowl-edge and strategy by:

) Consolidating study methods.) Learning better stress manage-

ment methods.) Testing how long it actually

takes to master pieces of work, so

that the learner’s final study plan isaccurate in terms of howmuch timeneeds to be allocated for revision ofsubjects.

) Developing the notes – mindmaps, annotations, etc. - requiredfor the final exams.

) Setting up small study groupswhere peers can learn from one an-other.She encourages learners to use

the prelims to consolidate theirknowledge and identify the gaps intheir approach while there is stilltime to get help. You can achieve the same with

writing past papers independentlyor in a small study group. If you dowell, use that achievement to moti-vate yourself, not slack off.

“If youdon’t, stay calmand identi-fy the challenges that need address-ing. The prelims are awonderful op-portunity for you to get yourself intop form while you still have time, she says.Remember to be mindful of the

factors that will boost your mentaland physical wellbeing, and prac-tise these as well: stress manage-ment, exercise, eating well and get-ting enough sleep. You have oneshot for your finals, but the prelimsare your test run.Theyallowyou tomake thechang-

es you need and to cope better dur-ing the finals, which are just a fewmonths away.Source: The Independent Institute
