Police ready for festive seasonDEVIDEAN MOSES

The Paarl-East Police will es-tablish various joint opera-tions to coordinate effective re-sponsestoemergenciesthis fes-tive season.

One of their concerns is theproblemofgangsterismanddrugswhich allegedly rules the Paarl-East community.According to Col. Mabhuti Ste-

phans, Station Commander ofPaarl-East police station, gang-sterism is a real problem inPaarl-East.He said gangs are especially in-

volved in drug dealing and someof the incarcerated “gang bosses”even rule various areas from outof prison.“Arealconcernisalsothatschoolchildren

are used, especially during the holidays, tosell drugs for the dealers. They then also selldrugs to other school children. Most of thegangmembers are linked tonotorious gangs

such as the 26s, 27s and 28s,” says Stephans. He added that the police are constantly

monitoring gangmembers in order to makesuccessful arrests.“This is one of ourmain priorities for this

festive season.”

Thepoliceareurgingthecommu-nity and especially parents to lookafter their children.Stephans also says: “Many of our

murder cases and assaults arerelated to gangsterism. The prob-lem is also that parents hide thechildren’s involvement in crimeand in doing so they hinder our in-vestigations.“We are also very carefullywhen

following up information relatingto instances where members of thepublic who are in possession of afirearmlicense, are illegallysellingammunition to gangsters and drugdealers,” says Stephans.Thepolicealsowarned thepublic

not to buy unlicenced firearms.“Youth forumsmust also help us

to address these issues, by discuss-ing the dangers of gangsterism with theyouth,” says Stephans.Thepubliccanphone021 877 5900 toreport

any crime.Paarl-East Police wishes the community

a festive and safe Christmas season.

Community members recently marched through the streets of Paarl-Eastto express their anger towards drug dealers.

Suicide is not theanswer for poor resultsWhile most matriculants are celebratingthe end ofmore than a decade of studying, others are dreading the release of exami-nation results.

Some may feel so overwhelmed that theycould contemplate suicide.

Hentie Malan, the branch manager atER24’s Johannesburg West offices, said para-medics respond to numerous suicide cases atthis time of year mainly due to the pressureof matric examinations.

Suicide is not the answer for failing matricor not doing as well as you hoped.

ER24 urges people contemplating suicide toconsider the trauma family and friends mayexperience.

Explaining the impact of suicide on lovedones, Jill Lithgow, the ER24 education train-ing and development department manager, said, “People experience complete and utterdevastation. Parents question what they havemissed. It eats away at every fibre of what itmeans to be a parent. They wonder what theycould have done differently when often thereis nothing that could have been done. It de-stroys families and relationships.”

Henning Jacobs, the trauma support co-or-dinator at ER24, described scenes he attended.

“Thescenecanbesummedupastotalshock.Nine out of 10 times the family did not expectthe suicide. They usually state that the persondid not show signs of stress or depression. They could not believe this person could dosuch a thing. The impact is severe and manypeople have breakdowns at suicide scenes dueto the gruesome images of their loved oneswho have committed suicide,” he said.

Paramedics try their best to save patients.Malan said, “While resuscitating these pa-tients I feel I need to do everything for thischild to survive so they can talk to their par-ents, resolve problems and carry on with theirlives,” he said.

Lithgowsaidteensuicideisoftenassociatedwith feelings of extreme helplessness, anxietyand the inability to see how they can continuein a situation. “Hopelessness seems to be anoverarching emotion in suicide. People feelthere is no way out.

“Consider the pressure of 12 years at schoolculminating in one set of exams. Everythingyou have done leads you to this point. We aretaught that without this magic matric we willamount to nothing. For most people this is adifficult thing to come to terms with. As webecomeolder, welearnthat this isnot thecase. The sense of despair, aloneness and completehelplessness in the situation and the inabilityto see a future seem to be a strong motivatingfactor. As parents we all want the best for ourchildren, butthisneedstobetemperedagainsttheir best, not our perceived best,” she said.

Lithgow added that it is a difficult balancingact because it is at this stage in a teen’s lifewhere physiology also plays a big part in howthey feel. She believes communication andhonest open dialogue is necessary.

Parents are advised to always be available

to talk to their children and work throughproblems together. Difficult situations mayarise, but children need to know they are notalone and not in a helpless situation.

Dr Robyn Holgate, the chief medical officerat ER24, said suicide is an unpredictableevent. “We cannot say who is going to killthemselves. There are 23 suicides a day inSouth Africa and 230 attempts,” she said.

She said people should obtain help for thosewho appear sad, are struggling to cope withthe circumstances or express that they arecontemplating suicide. “Make sure they knowthey can come to you. Be confidential, assurethem that there is help and get the appropriateprofessional help. Reach out to that person ina caring way. Initially, when the person hasattempted suicide, it may not be appropriateto talk to them. You may just want to reassurethem and put them in a safe environment,”said Dr Holgate.

According to her, some para-suicides arenot attempts by the person to kill themselves, but a cry for help. “It is our opportunity asmedical practitioners to reach out and helpthem overcome this feeling of helplessness, desperation and feeling that there is no oneout there to assist them,” she said.

People contemplating suicide must alsotake in consideration that attempted suicidecan lead to brain damage, disfigurement ordisability. Jacobs said there were some in-stances where people experienced brain dam-age to such an extent that they could no longerlive a normal life.

If you are feeling depressed, reach out forhelp.

ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can bereached 24 hours a day on 084 124.

Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and youmay be infatuated with someone you meet at this time, only to be

disappointed later when you discover this person does not fulfill all ofyour expectations. You are simply not seeing people objectively now.Your imagination is very active and creative, however, and so is your

yearning for something beautiful.

21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS

Your feelings, friends, and female relatives figureprominently in your life now. You realize how much youappreciate and need their love and support, and you areparticularly affectionate now. You may also initiate arelationship in which you take care of, support, and

"baby" someone else.

20 February to21 MarchPISCES

Both friendship and material benefits may well come toyou at this time. You feel very sociable and gregariousand seek conviviality, especially with people who really

know how to have a good time. Charitable andphilanthropic impulses are stronger now, also, and should

be followed with positive action on your part.

21 March to21 AprilARIES

Feelings of tenderness and love, especially for family orchildren, are very strong at this time. You want to shower

loved ones with affection, to invite friends into yourhome, and to be pampered and cared for. Your

relationships with women are very harmonious andpositive now.

21 April to21 MayTAURUS

At this time you enjoy emotional satisfaction and harmony inyour home life. Relationships with women run smoothly. If youhave a solid emotional base in your life, you will receive thebenefits of that. If not, this is a good time to begin makingconnections with people and also to discover what gives real

emotional nourishment and fulfillment.

22 June to23 JulyCANCER

An irritable urge to be free of constraints, social obligations, orbureaucracy typifies this time period. You may inadvertentlyprovoke the disapproval of colleagues, superiors, or otherauthorities through some presumptuous act on your part.Beware of overly optimistic schemes or self-indulgent

purchases at this time also.

21 May to22 JuneGEMINI

Your mind is directed inward now. Reflecting on yourpersonal life, and the overall direction you are headedin, is very likely now. Thoughts of the past and thechoices you made are also prominent. Making a

decision regarding your home or your family life isfavored at this time.

23 Julie to24 AugustLEO

The craving for sweetness and comfort in the form of loving affectionor food is strong now. This is a good time to baby yourself and also tospend time with the people who love and appreciate you the most. Also, you are feeling rather tender and softhearted and may do

something "maternal" on impulse (such as take home a stray kitten, offer to babysit, buy a gift for your family, etc.).

24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO

This is an excellent time to make decisions about yourfinancial affairs, as your judgment is sound and reliable, though a bit conservative. Investing in beautiful thingswhich are likely to increase in value over time (such asjewelry or fine art) is favored. You are not interested in

fleeting excitement or frivolity now.

23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA

At this time you come across in an appealing, charming, openly affectionate manner which is likely to win you new

friends and admirers. You make an excellent first impressionnow. This is a very favorable time for doing something toenhance your appearance such as getting a hair cut or

purchasing new clothing.

23 October to23 NovemberSCORPIO

You are likely to come to a very clear, definite decision atthis time and to let others know exactly what you want. Youare not in a very conciliatory mood and are not averse tostirring up unpleasant controversy in defense of your plan, idea, or desire. You may speak or act in haste now which

can be a cause of regret later on.

23 November to22 DecemberSAGITTARIUS

A nonstop flow of communication between yourself andthe people in your immediate environment is likely

today. You may engage in interesting and informativediscussions or fritter your time away in inconsequentialchatter and gossip. Mental curiosity or restlessness may

also impel you to take a short trip or visit.

You the Entrepreneur: Ready for 2015?DAVID MALHERBE

For some businessestheendofyearistimeto earn extra moneybecause customersdo extra shoppingduring the festiveseason. In contrastsome businesses ac-tually grind to a haltwhen many otherbusinesses closesuch as those in the manufac-turing and the building indus-try.

But, no matter what kind of

business you’re in, it isa time for reflection onthe year gone by.

Weoften tend to onlylook at whether wemade a bigger profitthantheyearbefore, orwhether we were ableto acquire the betterequipment that was al-ready long overdue.

Perhaps your busi-ness did not achieve

what you hoped for. Perhaps itwas a difficult year and you areon the verge of closing down.

Whatever your situation maybe, I want to encourage you to not

onlylookatthecircumstancesbutto also reflect on your personallife. In Proverbs 4:23 we read, “Becareful how you think; your lifeis shaped by your thoughts.”

The way to a better tomorrowandanewyearstartswiththewaywe think. If you think you arebeaten, you are. If you think youcan, you will. Therefore, if thisyear was not what you hoped for,do not only hope for a better yearto come, start to plan what youwill do differently. If you carry onthe same way as this year, expectthe same outcome. We need tochange our ways if we want to im-prove and grow our businesses.

Have you ever done strategicplanning for your life and busi-ness? Do you know what youwould like to achieve during yourlifetime and with your business?Unless you plan it, you will notachieve it.

Let us learn from the past yearand reach out to next year doingas theApostle Paulwrites in Phil-ippians 3: 13 & 14 “I forget whatis behind, stretching out to thethings ahead. I run toward thegoal, so that I can win the prize.”You the entrepreneur wishes all

its readers a blessed Christmasand we trust that you will planthoroughly for 2015.

Lottery’s multimillionChristmas gift to ECDThe National Lotteries Board (NLB) of-ficially invites applications for fundingfrom charity organisations involved inearly childhood development (ECD),Charlotte Mampane, the chief execu-tive officer of the NLB announced re-cently.

Charities traditionally receive 45% ofthe nearly R2 billion annual fundingpool, which represents the largest shareof funds available to the NLB for distri-bution to qualifying organisations.

Mampane says the funding allocationis targeted towards infrastructure de-velopment projects for ECD centres.

“Preference will be given to applica-tions from early childhood develop-ment centres in specific priority areasand organisations that advance rural, underprivileged and poor communities

to support development in the 0 – 5years age group,” says Mampane.

Established ECD centres can applyfor up to a maximum of R3,8 million forproject management of new infrastruc-ture over a period of two years.

Mampane says applications from newor existing beneficiaries are welcomed.

“However, the NLB will naturally in-sist that all beneficiaries submit thenecessary mandatory documents, in or-der to be considered for funding.”

The closing date for submission of ap-plications is Friday 13 February.

Late applications will not be consid-ered.

For more information, applicants areencouraged to contact the NLB call cen-tre on 08600 65383 or visitwww.nlb.org.za/charities.

Have a safe braai this seasonNothing beats a good old-fashioned braai among fam-ily and friends over the fes-tive season.

ER24 reminds members ofthe public, however, to keep inmind everyone’s safety whilecelebrating over the holidays.Vereeniging Base branch

manager, Andre Bronkhorst, said prior to starting a braai orany other open fire, considerkeeping a fire extinguisherclose by.Good ventilation is essential

as smoke and gases from a firecan possibly kill someone.“Ensure all flammable solids and

liquids are in a safe place. Ensure youare permitted to start a firewhere youwant to braai,” said Bronkhorst. You should also ensure theweather

conditions are conducive for a braai. If you are expecting strong winds, start the braai in an area where runa-way fires can be avoided. The braai stand should not be in a

position where it blocks the only es-cape in the event of a fire. The braaistand should also be sturdy. Youmustbe able to place some weight on thestand without it collapsing. Ensure itwon’t topple over if bumped. Also ensure there is no chance of

burning coal falling out of the stand.Bronkhorst said the safest way to

starta fire isbyusingoldpaperor fire-lighters.But if preferred, liquid firelighters,

diesel, petrol, alcohol and thinnersshouldbeusedcautiouslyas theymayhaveadifferentreactionfromconven-tional firelighters.Remember a fire started with fuel

can transfer from the braai stand tothe container holding the fuel. If fuelis poured and then lit, be cautious ofthe gas released. It can cause a largerflame than anticipated. If you use wood, make sure you

choose wisely. For example, woodfrom the Tamboti tree, part of the eu-phorbia family, should be avoided.Smoke from this wood can cause nau-sea,diarrhoea,vomiting,severestom-ach cramps and even death. Cedarwood should also be avoided, as itssmoke may be harmful. Most wood

from evergreen trees release morecreosote and increase the possibilityof poisoning and fires.Adult supervision is non-negotia-

ble when children are around openfires.Childrentrippingandfallingintoor

against an open fire resulting in seri-ous burns is a possibility. Flying em-bers may also cause injuries to chil-dren. “Unsupervised childrenmay al-so play with fire and cause flash firesand severe injury to themselves andothers. Children walking past braaistands may not think the stand is hotand accidentally place their hands onthe braai, resulting in severe burnwounds,” said Bronkhorst.Every parent should educate their

children about the danger of fires.Teach themwhat to expect, do andnotdo.“Few people realise it but throwing

sealed glass containers or plastic con-tainers with some fluid in a fire cancause an explosion. The fluid in thecontainer heats and lets off steam. This increasesthepressureinthecon-tainer causing it to forcefully rup-ture,” said Bronkhorst. In case of burns:) Remove the person from the heat

source.) If possible, remove clothes and

jewellery. It is important to do this be-fore swelling begins, however, avoidbreaking blisters.

) Keep the affected area underlukewarm water for at least 15 to 20minutes. If the burn area is affectingthe person’s face, ensure the person

is able tobreathewhile coolingthe wound with water.

) Aburnwound that causesthe skin to become red only, generally does not need exten-sive treatment. However, anywound that causes a blisterlarger than the surface of one’spalmneeds tobeseenbyamed-ical professional.

) Neverapplyoil-basedsub-stances to any burn. Some peo-ple believe butter, oil or shoepolishwill treat theburn.How-ever, thepersonstandsagreat-er chance of infection and fur-ther wound damage if the cor-rect substances are not

applied.) Phone ER24 on 084 124 in case of

burns.Types of burns explainedPeople can sustain first, second or

third-degree burns. Below is a de-scription of each:

) First-degree (superficial) burnsaffect only the epidermis (outer layerof skin). The wound is generally redand painful but no blisters appear onthe burn surface.

) Second-degree (partial thick-ness) burns. Second-degree burns in-volve the epidermis and part of thedermis layer of skin. This burn injurymay produce severe pain and blistersmay show on the burn injury.

) Third-degree (full thickness)burns. This burn wound affects theskin all the way to themuscle or fattytissue. These burn wounds generallyhave a waxy appearance and may bepainless as the burn may be deepenough to damage the underlyingnerves.Memorise thewordPASStoremem-

ber how to use a fire extinguisher ifneeded.P - Pull. Pull the safety pin.A - Aim. Aim at the base of the

flames (the burning material not theflames).S - Squeeze. Apply pressure to the

handle to open the valve and releasethe extinguisher’s contents.S - Sweep.Move the extinguisher in

a sweeping motion.Remember,ER24’sEmergencyCon-

tact Centre can be reached 24 hoursa day on 084 124.

Virmeer inligting, besoek: http://www.can-
