HERITAGE COMMEMORATED: TheDrakenstein Heritage Foundation re-cently unveiled plaques to commem-orate the forced removal of so-called“non-whites” from Paarl West in the1960s. The ceremonies, at whichsurviving former residents recalledthe heartbreak caused by the GroupAreas Act, were held at the old Mus-lim school next to the Paarl Civic Cen-tre, to honour the former residentsof “Die Ou Tuin”, and at a site nearHuguenot Station, to honour theformer residents of “Agter Stasie”.From left are Eric Adams, Jessie Mat-thews Carolissen, Moutie Richardsand Kieyaam Abrahams.
Facelift for Het GestichtPaarl, the Pearl of theBoland, is one of South Af-rica’s oldest towns. Theheritage that has shapedthe area has been capturedover centuries in the his-toric buildings that line itsstreets.
One such building is HetGesticht, an old slave church, which today isamuseumthatservesasasymbolofreconcil-iation between the communi-ties thatwere driven apart bylaws of the past. Two centuries later, the
building has recently under-gone external redecorationand repairs – the funds weredonated by a private familytrust. Specialist contractors,Gordon Verhoef and Krause(GVK), carried out the work.Built in 1813 by missionar-
ies to serve as a space whereslaves and non-white peoplecould receive religious in-struction, the building be-came an integral part of thePaarl community.According to historian Hy-
bré van Niekerk, some of themost prominent families inPaarl can trace their lineageback to the Het Gesticht con-gregation.During the 20th century,
the building fell into disuseand in 2000 it was bought bythe South African GestichtMuseum Trust, which re-stored and converted it into amuseumtohonourthememo-ry of the Paarl community.Gordon Verhoef & Krause
Painting and Restorationmanaging director, Jason
Krause, says: “We are knownas specialists in the field ofrestoration of heritage build-ings and have worked withthe heritage architect HannsBlumer on previous projects.Due to the specialist and deli-catenatureof the job,henego-tiatedwith us to carry out theworks.”Work entailed washing the
building down, repairing theplasterwithspecialistmortarmixes to suit the existingplaster used 200 years ago,and filling small and largecracks with specialised fill-ers. The crew also removedthe incorrect paint applica-tions that had been used overthe decades and applied alime wash coating to matchwhat was originally used.In addition, the roof was
prepared and re-coated to
match the original colour.Minor carpentry works
such as replacing rotten tim-ber doors, were executed – allofwhichhad tobemade to theexact specs of the existingitems. The windows also hadto be replaced which necessi-tated specialist glass beingsourced so that it wouldmatch thesurvivingpiecesasclosely as possible. The teamdelicately polished the bell, which was donated to thechurch in 1854 and recreatedsome of the mouldings thatadorned the building.Great care had to be taken
to ensure that the heritage el-ements were preserved.Krause explains, “The ex-
isting plaster on the walls isvery old and brittle sowe hadtobecarefulnottocausemoredamage. When we were pre-paring the walls for the lime-wash coating system, theplaster mixes used to patchthe surface also had to be ofa lime-richnature, asmoderncement types will eventuallycause further damage to thestructure. All the work wasdone with utmost care.“Heritage projects are very
rewarding to our team. Thevisual transformation of anold, neglected structure backto its original condition isgratifying and makes usproud of the work we havecompleted.Furthermore, by continu-
ing to do this type of work weare able to pass on the skillsinvolved in heritage restora-tion to our younger work-force,” concludes Krause.
The historical Paarl beacon, HetGesticht, has undergone an inten-sive facelift.
HOUSING HANDOVER: Drakenstein Municipality recently handed over a house to the 66-year-oldCatharina Persent (right) at the Drommedaris Housing Project in Mbekweni. Persent has been onthe Drakenstein Municipality Housing waiting list since 1974. She was very thankful that she couldnow own her own home where she could live with her children. The municipality embarked ona campaign to verify the housing list. Residents, who had proof that their names were previouslyon the list and were skipped in the allocation of houses, were then accommodated as in Persent’scase.HerewithPersent areGesie vanDeventer (ExecutiveMayor), councillorWendyPhilander (PortfolioHolder: Housing and Human Settlements) and councillor Ruth Arnolds (Ward 7).

Your choices and decisions may lack prudence, realism, or sound judgment right now. Be waryof overly optimistic plans which are presented to you, signing contracts without doing thoroughbackground work or reading the fine print, or promising something which will be difficult for
you to fulfill. Questions of honor, ethics, law, or morality arise in your mind at this time.

Method:In a saucepan over medium heat, melt Stork bake. Add sugar and
condensed milk. Add syrup. Beat the egg in a separate bowl/cup. Take
the mixture from the heat and quickly beat in the beaten egg. TIP: The
secret is to not add the egg whilst on the heat otherwise the egg will
cook before it is evenly mixed into the mixture. Now, put the mixture
back onto the stove and turn up the heat slightly. Add vanilla and salt.
Let the mixture boil for 8-10 minutes whilst stirring – to prevent the
mixture, which will now be taking on a more caramel colour, from
burning at the bottom of the saucepan. When the mixture reaches a
caramel colour, remove it from the heat, add 2-3 drops of red food
colouring and beat and stir the mixture with a wooden spoon for 5
minutes. Once the fudge becomes slightly thicker, pour the content
into 20cm X 20cm pan and refrigerate for 15 – 20 minutes until
medium hard. Don’t refrigerate it too long, especially if you would like
your fudge to be a soft and creamy texture. Now cut it into small
squares and store in a airtight container at room temperature.

Vra eerder: “Wat
kan ek vir myself doen?” Hoekommoet iemand anders vir jou ’n werkskep?Indien jyvoel jyweetniksvanbesig-
