SEDIBENG. - Puleng Mosola, a 35-year-old woman from Zamdela,Sasolburg and mother of one underwent eight operations recentlyafter discovering that she had meningitis.
This affected her brain, leading to a dramatic change andblindness in her left eye. The blinded woman searched farand wide for help and luckily bumped into the Tigers Bi-ker Club from Sasolburg and the biker club made amendsand vowed to help the despairing woman. Speaking toSedibeng Ster Tigers Biker Club Secretary MapulengPhosisi said that due to the legacy of the late founderand the president of the Tigers Biker Club MzayifaniNosenga,a local businessman and avid motobikerwho died last year they vowed to help knowing thatif Nosenga was alive, he would help.
According to a medical invoice the operationcost about R17 000. “As the Sasolburg branch wemade means to raise the amount. Thank God thedoctors gave us a discount, reducing the amountto R12 500. As we speak Mosola has a neweye and will undergo treatment yearly,” saysPhosisi. She adds that they are trying to builda house for Mosola since she’s unemployed.Mosola was very ecstatic and overwhelmedby the operation and help she received fromthe doctor and the Tigers Biker Club. “Ithank God for letting me receive such lo-ve and support from my community.
It is God’s merciful ways that mademe meet such people who showed melove and care. I won’t forget all theirefforts. May God bless them abun-dantly,” says Mosola. Tigers BikerClub asks for any help from thecommunity to support Mosola.

and passionate athletes and involves the community. Sasol
is committed to making a difference in the areas in which it
operates and wants to make the meeting an enjoyable event for
all,” says Dr Ivor Zwane, General Manager Public Affairs Sasol,
Sasolburg.
According to Terseus Liebenberg, athletics manager of the
NWU Pukke, the Sasol NWU Pukke permit athletics meeting
is one of the tangible events that gives impetus to their view
that every day is an opportunity to be the next greatest,
fastest, loudest, proudest … the next first. “Being a partner
in the event showcases NWU Pukke’s active involvement in
sports, and athletics training in particular. Not only is NWU
Pukke a preferred training destination for hundreds of athletes
from around the world, but has our university team been
the University Sports South Africa champions for more than
10 years over the past 20 years. We will also boast 12 NWU
athletes in the South African team at the 26thWorld Student
Games that will take place in Shenzen, China during August this
year,” Liebenberg continues.
In September 2012 Sasol, in partnership with the Metsimaholo
Local Municipality and Metsimaholo Rejuvenation Trust,
embarked on a project to upgrade the stadium. The project
replaced the tartan track, repaired flood lights, purchased
equipment such as hurdles, replaced the electronic timing
device and performed general maintenance to buildings and
ablution facilities.
For the first time in
years an international
senior athletics
meeting will be held at
the newly renovated
DP de Villiers stadium
in Sasolburg, on
Tuesday evening,
25March 2014 at
16:45. This Sasol
NWU Pukke permit
meeting is one of only
a few senior athletics
meetings that will take
place before the South
African senior athletics
championships on
11 and 12 April 2014
in Pretoria.
The meeting, hosted by Sasol in partnership with the North-
West University, Potchefstroom Campus and the controlling
body of the DP deVilliers stadium, is an accredited international
senior athletics permit meeting made possible by the
renovations done since 2012 at the stadium, primarily by Sasol’s
infrastructure development project, Ikusasa. The stadium now
has Level two track status that enables it to host national
events where all records are accepted by the International
Athletics Federation.
Apart from witnessing local internationally acclaimed athletic
heroes Chris Harmse (hammer throw) and Eliza Naudé (discus)
in action, spectators can look forward to performances by two
of South Africa’s top athletes André Olivier (800m) and Elroy
Gelant (3000m) who have both just returned from the 2014
IAAFWorld Indoor Championships in Sopot Poland.
The 400m hurdles is always an exciting event. However, both
the men and ladies events promise to be spectacular. 400m
hurdle legends LJ van Zyl and Cornel Fredericks will go head to
head, while South Africa’s two top ladies,Wenda Theron and
Anneri Ebersohn are sure to make sparks fly when they sail
around the track. Apart from SunetteViljoen who will be in
action in the javelin event, spectators can also look forward to
international competition as two athletes from Botswana and
two from Egypt are to take each other on in the 400m for men.
“The Sasol NWU Pukke permit athletics meeting is a highlight
on our events calendar in Sasolburg, as it attracts families

EVATON. - Eleven years ago Gcinumuzi Fokwane(39) was caught in a cross-fire.This has put his life on hold - indefinitely. The horrific part of Fokwane’s life is spending a
decade in hospitals, undergoing several operationsthat have done nothing except keep him alive.“I was in a shootout at work during a business rob-
bery. I was a petrol attendant when gunfire erupted.Unfortunately I was hit right in my neck. The bulletcut my thoracic bone, which holds the spinal column.Ever since, I have been in and out of hospitals. I spenteight years in Kingston Hospital and was operatedon more than 20 times. I just knew from there thatmy life would never be the same again,” says thewheelchair-bound Fokwane. Fokwane’s condition isweakening as his wounds became septic. He has twochildren Mzwandile (17) who is in matric, and S’fiso(11) both living with their mother who left him 5years ago. “I have accepted my condition. I thankGod for the life he has given me. Everything is wor-king against me. My wife left with my children andmy father has also left me like this and gone to Eas-tern Cape,” says Fokwane who lives with his motherand a care giver. Fokwane says that he wishes to havea house. Apparently the heat in the summer monthsaggravate his septic condition. “I appliedfor a house in 1995 and in 2007 but Ihave not had any luck. All I have is mis-fortune,” explains Fokwane.Members ofthe community wishing to help Fokwanecan contact Sedibeng Ster.

This eve of the 54th commemoration ofMarch 21, formerly called Sharpeville Day,now known as Human Rights Day remindsus of who we are, where we come from andthe strides we have made as a country.21 March 1960 will for many South Afri-
cans forever remain Sharpeville Day - a daywhen policemowed down 69 unarmed peopleand injuredmore than 180 others who refusedto carry the hated ‘dompas’ identity docu-ment that was meant only for black indige-nous Africans. This is the time for us to sit back and reflect
on the importance of what this means for us,however it is not only enough for us to justsit back and reflect on the importance of hu-man rights. It is also simply not enough toreaffirm our support for the principles contai-
ned in the declaration of Human Rights. Weneed to recommit ourselves to human rightsin a meaningful and practical way. We needto get back to basics of teaching moral valuesand tolerance for one another through educa-tion and religion. Since 1994, 21 March hasbeen commemorated as Human Rights Dayin South Africa and Sharpeville was the siteselected by then-President Nelson Mandelafor the signing into law of the Constitutionof South Africa on December 10 of 1996. In1998, the Truth and Reconciliation Commis-sion (TRC) found that the police actions con-stituted “gross human rights violations in thatexcessive force was unnecessarily used tostop a gathering of unarmed people. OnMarch 21, 2002, the 42nd anniversary of themassacre, a memorial was opened by formerPresident NelsonMandela as part of the Shar-peville Human Rights Precinct. Human rightsare rights inherent to all human beings, wha-
tever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, lan-guage, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human
rights without discrimination. These rightsare all interrelated, interdependent and inse-parable. All human rights are indivisible, whether they are civil and political rights, such as the right to life, equality before thelaw and freedomof expression; economic, so-cial and cultural rights, such as the right towork, social security and education, or collec-tive rights, such as the rights to developmentand self-determination, are indivisible, inter-
related and interdependent. The improvementof one right facilitates advancement of theothers. Likewise, the deprivation of one rightadversely affects the others. Now as we commemorate this day, no mat-
ter the colour of our skin, our difference ofpolitical opinion and our difference in religi-ous belief let us remember those who gavetheir lives for this country to be what it is thisday.“Resentment is like drinking poison and
then hoping it will kill your enemies.”― Nelson MandelaLerato...

SEDIBENG.- Since the heavy downpoursthat have caused the high water levels intheVaalDam the SedibengDisasterMana-gement and all the other relevant role play-ers have been on high alert monitoring andevaluating the situation and flash floodingin risky areas such as Evaton, Sicelo,Muv-hango, Khayelitsha, Brand Muller Roadalong the Vaal River, Golf Road, GeneralHertzog to ensure that proper and immedi-ate response is effected.
Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM)Acting Director of External Communicati-ons Lebo Mofokeng says that the JointOperations Centre at the Vaal Technoramais also part of the level of readiness shouldthe circumstances escalate.
All stakeholderswill be called to partici-pate in the Joint Operations Centre shouldcircumstances require. Communities atidentified risk areas such asMuvhango, Si-celo, Tshepiso andKhayelitsha are also puton high alert through pamphlets, publiceducation and the envisaged door-to-doorinformation for community alertness.
DisasterManagement established a con-tingency plan specifically for floods,
which is constantly updated and reviewedbased on the prevailing circumstances. Thecontingency plan can be activated at anygiven time when serious threats are imi-nent. The plan has been disseminated toall local municipalities within the regionand as such will be jointly activated to ef-fectively manage the situation.
The Vaal Dam capacity is currently at105.4% full. The dam is under pressure andthe inflow of water into the dam is 1350m3, with outflow of 970m3. This meansthat there is more water flowing into thedam than the water flowing out of the dam. There are currently 7 sluice gates openedto release water to ease the pressure of thedam.Mofokeng says that due to the openedsluice gates, the water level and flow ofthe Vaal River has risen drastically. Riversfeeding the Vaal River (Klipriver, Suiker-bos and Rietspruit rivers) are also risingdrastically.
Currently the situation in identifiedflood-prone areas such as Sicelo, Tshepi-so, Evaton, Blesbokspruit in Lesedi andSea Point in Sharpeville is not yet extensi-vely threatening as it is manageable andis constantly monitored.

South Africans will commemorate the national Human Rights Day 21 March 2014 at George ThabeCricket Pitch in Sharpeville, Gauteng Province. The theme for the year’s Human Rights Day is“Celebrating 20 years of changing lives through human rights”. President Jacob Zuma will speak atthe event.
The 1960s were characterised by systematic defiance and protest against apartheid and racism acrossthe country. On March 21 1960, the community of Sharpeville and Langa townships, like their fellowcompatriots across the country, embarked on a protest march against pass laws. The apartheid policeshot and killed 69 of the protesters at Sharpeville, many of them shot while fleeing. Many other peoplewere killed in other parts of the country. The tragedy came to be known as the Sharpeville Massacreand it exposed the apartheid government’s deliberate violation of human rights to the world.
The democratic government declaredMarch 21 Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour thosewho fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today. Our Constitution is hailed as one of themost progressive in the world. The Constitution is the ultimate protector of our Human Rights, whichwere previously denied to the majority of our people under Apartheid. We commemorate HumanRights Day to reinforce our commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution. Theserights include:
Equality – everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law.
Human dignity – everyone has inherent dignity and have their dignity respected and protected.
Freedom of movement and residence – everyone has a right to freedom of movement and to resideanywhere in the country.
Language and culture – everyone has the right to use the language and to participate in the culturallife of their choice.
Life - everyone has the right to life.
Government will host various activities (www.dac.gov.za) throughout the Human Rights Month toremind all South African to continue working together to uphold the culture of human rights. HumanRights come with responsibilities and we all have the responsibility to build a society that respects therule of law. Whether we are at the work place, within communities, at schools, or with our partnersand children, we all need to demonstrate the kind of responsibility that we would like to see in ourcountry’s future.

MEYERTON. - An event was held recently atthe Sicelo Community Hall in Midvaal for titledeeds to be handed over to recipients of housesin that area. The Department of Human Settle-ments (DHS) usually appoints conveyancers toundertake the transfer of properties to benefici-aries. However, in 2006, a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MOU)was signed between theSedibeng District Municipality and the DHSgiving the municipality the delegated powersto ensure that houses in the Sicelo area withinMidvaal are transferred to beneficiaries. Sicelois a housing project that was completed and al-located to beneficiaries in 2005 and consists of1 089 houses in total.
To date 837 title deeds have already beenissued to beneficiaries, but 67 were still out-standing.
The event held in Februa-ry was for the Sedibeng Dis-trict Municipality to handover the outstanding titledeeds in their possession.Assistance Mshudulu SDMMMC for Development,Planning and Housing re-presented the mayor at theevent and handed out thedeeds.
A title deed is an extreme-ly important document, as itis the owner’s proof of ow-nership. It is critical to ensu-ring not only security of te-nure, but also that poor hou-seholds could use theirhouse as an asset to buildwealth.
Midvaal Local Municipality MMC FreddiePeters, who assisted with the handover, saidthat title deeds are important, as they provideindividuals with an address, recognise the ow-ner and their family as being part of themunici-pality and enable ownership of the property topass on to family members in the event of de-ath. He further said that from a municipal per-spective, ownership obliges the owner to payproperty rates and service charges for servicesreceived, thereby contributing to its ongoingsustainability. “With regards to the extensionof a house, a beneficiary cannot submit buil-ding plans to the building control section of themunicipality for consideration if they do nothave a copy of the original title deed.
“This should allow for more controlled andsafe extensions in the area,” he said.

MEYERTON.- Providing sanitation to in-formal settlements is one of the most criti-cal challenges facing most local govern-ments in South Africa. Midvaal Local Mu-nicipality recently commenced a sanitationproject to provide 200 toilets to the commu-nities of Piel’s Farm (71), Boitumelo (71),Khayelitsha (67) and Behr’s Farm (2).Aaliyah Dangor, Media Liaison Officerof Midvaal Local Municipality says,“These communities have been invol-ved in the project from the start and havebeen involved in the actual constructionof the units. Initially a survey was doneto determine the number of people ineach household and according to thesefigures, toilets are installed that will beshared amongst a few households.”
The sanitation system being imple-mented is the Enviro-Loo dry system, asit has a number of benefits. These inclu-de:
•It is waterless - thus water is saved.•It is odourless and has no pits of stan-
ding water - thus no flies.•It only uses the sun and wind to ope-
rate.•The system has a very low mainte-
nance cost.•It has been installed successfully in
many countries all over the world.Dangor says that most of the excavati-

ROSHNEE. – Say no to drugs! The commu-nity lambasts the drug problem in their areabut they have confidently vowed to win thebattle. Residents say they are on the vergeof turning the area back into what it was -a clean, drug-free society.
Roshnee hosted a drug-awareness pro-gramme initiated by Idress Hansa last week.Ebrahim Gangat, programme director, saidRoshnee used to focus on a clean slate againstcrime.
“Our target is to make sure we join handsand secure a top flight talk with the Muslimcommunity,” saidGangat. He praised the con-tribution of the community.
“If the children are not taught to do some-thing, they will fail to do anything. There’sno quick fix through drugs no matter howmuch money one has,” said guest speaker Ra-fiq Mayet, director of Magalies Health Cen-tre, a rehab wing of the Crescent of HopeSouth Africa.
The community gathered inside the CivicCentre Hall to share ideas and break the silen-ce on how best they could help bring downthe disease that has brought the communityto its knees. The most talked about drugs werecocaine, crack, heroin, mandrax, crystal methand ecstasy. “If we as the community don’ttake a stand, the next generation will be total-ly lost. Once you take drugs, escaping deathis not easy. Why start something that will des-troy your life?
“Substance abuse is not a disease, it is self-
inflicted. Drugs see only destruction, not raceor colour. Children as young as six are usedto transport drugs because the police neverstop and search them.
Drugs are 5% of a lifetime but 90% of alifestyle,” explained Mayet. Speakers appea-led to everyone to turn the drug awareness
campaign into a community project. MajidBadat took it upon himself to clean the streetswith the help of the community.
“This is the start of a huge battle againstdrugs. Islam has zero tolerance for any formof intoxicant and Roshnee is the same.“Rosh-nee is a small community that will never be
ruled by the devil,” said Badat.Hansa said Roshnee had fostered a group
backed by Badat and working wonders tokeep the area free of drugs. It was unanimous-ly decided in the meeting that the group, cal-led the ‘A’ Team’, resume their work.

EVATON.- Thabo Maruma is a man ona mission to save promising soccer yo-ungsters in Evaton West.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Ma-
ruma says he is disturbed to see promisingyoung soccer players playing soccer bare-footed. “For the past ten years staying hereI have beenwatching the boys playing soc-cer on the street with no soccer boots usingtheir school shoes. Tomake it worse, theseboys are talented but just need a leader and
motivation. I appeal to Evaton West and theBeverly Hills community to come on board tohelp these youngsters realise their dream ofplaying organised football,” says the emotionalMaruma. Maruma says he made an effort togo to some peoplewho donated trophies so thathe can organise a soccer tournament for theseyoungsters and today he trains them as a team.He says he has been staying in the Vaal forthe past 10 years and he asks the communityto help him to take these boys away from thestreet and from drugs. He adds, “Vaal is a
place where most talented players comefrom, especially when you look in PSL.This region has potential but these boys ha-ve lost hope because no-one cares aboutthem. I know there are teams and acade-mies in the Vaal but the truth is not all ofthese boys are fortunate enough to play forthem.Wemust have teams around the areathat will develop these talents and taketheir careers to the next level. I challengeall the Evaton West and Beverly Hillscommunity to come on board.”

SHARPEVILLE. - Sharpeville’s GeorgeThabe Stadium has been temporarily closedso the pitch can recover. Sedibeng Ster Sportshas learned that the venue - the only venueof its magnitude in this region - was forcedto close after the pitchwas damaged by a poli-tical rally held recently. The venue has been closed since and soccer
teams feel that despite this, nothing is happe-ning to improve the pitch’s condition. Sharpe-ville teams have to travel to Shakespeare Sta-dium to play their league matches there untilthe pitch recovers.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster
Sports, the Sharpeville teams’representative say football ve-nues or facilities are not respec-ted.Sedibeng Ster Sports has also
learned that over the weekend- the venue was open for a FunRun held inside.“We were told that the venue
had been closed for the pitch torecover but nothing is happe-ning to improve the conditionsof the venue. Now we must tra-vel to Shakespeare even if it isa home game. Some of us don’thave sponsors to travel everyweekend. We don’t enjoy thehome-advantage of the host. How can the municipality letour football facilities be des-troyed in this way? This is a cle-ar indication that football is nottaken seriously,’ says a team of-ficial who did not want to be na-med.Sedibeng Ster Sports has le-
arned that the pitches suffered
beneath thewheels of the heavy truck that car-ried the stage for the rally into the field. Localsoccer fans now have nowhere to go to watchgames as they used to go to George Thabeto watch SAB League games on weekends. When approached for comment the Emfu-
leni Local Municipality’s facility managerAlfred Makola said the pitch still has to beimproved. He says they are supposed to applysoil to improve the pitch. “The pitch was da-maged by a heavy truck that bore the stagefor the rally into the pitch. I understand theteam frustrations but we are on it,” says Mo-kola.

Parents too must take the blame for thestate of football in this region. This is not the first time Shooting From
The Hip highlights the issue of parentswho show a lack of interest in their child-ren’s football careers. This is a serious concern because when
their children play rugby or cricket thewhole family comes to support him or her.Is this a slave mentality or is football apoor black man’s sport. You tell me!My point is that Safa Sedibeng’s region
team was selected but most of the child-ren did not have the required documentsfor them to be selected. It was disappoin-ting when only less than 10 children tur-ned up for trials because others did nothave passports or IDs.Mind you, coaches have been pleading
with parents to apply for these youngs-ters’ passports and/or IDs, but their pleasevidently fell on deaf ears.In case parents are not aware, they have
denied their children a lifetimeopportunity to play for a juniornational team.Parents must also be aware
that in the five years to come, there might be no jobs in SouthAfrica and the best these yo-ungsters can do is to apply them-selves to what they are good atwhich is playing soccer.Dear Parent, if you’re a lawy-
er or a doctor, don’t think yourchild is also interested in these
professions. This is wrong thinking! It was a shame to see our squad repre-
sented by players who play only atschools because those who play competi-tive football every weekend did not havethe right documents. It is not a secret. Many good players were left out becau-
se they did not have the relevant docu-ments, to say the least. As many as fourSedibeng players were selected for theprovincial team – Shooting From The Hipbelieves that we would have had moreplayers in the provincial team if thosegood players had the required documents.Shooting From The Hip always prea-
ches that there are some youngsters outthere whose lives can change for the bet-ter through football. In fact, I know what I’m talking about
because I was a footballer myself and Iknow what football can do for those whoare talented.Shooting From The Hip’s message to
parents is, wake up and smell the coffee!
Is soccer a poorIs soccer a poorblack man’s sport?black man’s sport?

“There is no doubt that this county is bles-sed with talent and these exciting youngsterswere a marvel to watch. It is not true that thestandard of football is going down, taking intoconsideration the talent that was displayed to-day,” he concludes.Regional head coach Themba Dlamini said
that not having douments let most youngstersdown. He believes that if most of the localboys had passports or IDs they could havemade it to the provincial team. (See ShootingFrom the Hip comment on P15). At the timeof going to print, the names of all the selectedplayers for the provincial squad had not yetbeen released to the media.
as they played exciting football.Themba Dlamini was at the helm of Safa
Sedibeng coaching, while Master Zondo wasteam manager. Sedibeng Ster Sports journa-list – Zacharia Nale - was among the selectorsappointed by provincial chairman Anthony‘Bull Dog’ Reeves.Speaking after the trials, Reeves said he
was impressed with the standard of footballdisplayed by the youngsters. This former SafaSedibeng president says the future of thiscountry looks bright. Even thoughmany havelost confidence in South African footballReeves was optimistic that they are movingin the right direction.
