The Sebokeng police are sending out a strong warning and alerting members of the community about an alleged bit- ter man that has come to be known as ‘Ra-stena’ (Brick man). The man is said to be roaming the area of Sebokeng assaulting people with a brick wrapped in a panty-hose or sock during the night. The mondus operandi is that he would let his victims pass him on the street before unleashing the brick on them.Warrant Officer Mzimkulu Mthimkulu said members of the public feared to report the suspect at the po- lice. “ We have received several infor- mation regarding ‘Ra-stena’ but no one is willing to open a case,” said Mthim- kulu. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Studentswere delighted to hear that classeswould be commencing following athree-week strike by the lectures ofSedibeng College’s FET (FurtherEducation and Training).

Much to the surprise of the stu-dents, there were no classes onMonday when they all flocked totheir respective campuses followinga message stating that classes wouldcommence from 8:00 on Monday.“No tests, assignments or classesuntil further notice”. This was themessage received by all studentswhen they entered the premises ofthe colleges. Chairperson of NEHA-WU (National Education, Healthand Allied Workers’ Union) Sedi-beng College Sello Mafela says:“We did not know anything aboutthe commencement of classes today. We stand by the things we stated inthe memorandum that was handedin at head office last week. GeorgeMothapo, Deputy Principal Corpo-

rate, must be removed and an investi-gation into his shady dealings must belaunched.” Mafela added that the colle-ge had an alarming number of tempora-ry lecturers, the highest in the country.“This is also a big concern as it doesnot give students the consistency theyneed to further their studies. Lecturersare always resigning and this hasbrought a big disturbance to the classesin the past.” The workers have not re-sumed with their duties as none of theirdemands have been met.The lecturers including ad-min and general workershad in the last week embar-ked on a protest where theyhanded in a memorandumwith a list of grievanceswhich included a call forthe removal of the DeputyPrincipal (Corporate) of Se-dibeng College, GeorgeMothapo. Students haveraised their concerns regar-ding this matter. Some haveeven lost confidence in the

College’s Student RepresentativeCouncil, SRC. “We have lost a lotof time and we are due to write in-ternal exams on the 6th of nextmonth (October). Our educationhas suffered as a result of this stri-ke. We fear that we are going tofail the exams. Right now our onlyoption is SASCO.”

Sedibeng College managementcould not be reached at the timeof going to print.

Please note that the Bongani Mabaso Eco Park in Vaalpark will be temporarily closed to the

public from 16 September 2013 until 29 November 2013. This is due to another Sasol

infrastructure development project that will be constructing new ablution facilities in the park.

For more information on Sasol,

visit www.sasol.com or call 016 960 9111

partnershipbenefits electrical infrastructure

Sasol, in partnership

with the Metsimaholo

Local Municipality, is

making good progress

in the upgrading of

existing electrical

infrastructure in the

Metsimaholo area.

of existing trenches and the repair of the floor inside the

existing transformer bay. Similar activities were done at three

substations in Sasolburg, being the Owen, Vanderbijl and Fichard

substations where old switchgear was stripped out and replaced

with new 400V distribution boards.

In addition, work to repair and move existing house power

connections from temporary buildings to new RDP houses

in Zamdela, started on 9 September 2013. The team is also

repairing cables that are experiencing communication problems

and is replacing stolen cables. The work is being executed

by approved local service providers under supervision of the

electrical department of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality

and in consulation with Sasol. In the identified wards where

work is being done, the service provider is employing residents

from the area to assist with the work. These workers have been

identified by the ward councillors.

Distribution feeder maintenance was also done on 157 feeders

at 22 substation feeder panels in Sasolburg, Vaalpark, Zamdela,

Deneysville and Oranjeville.

Through Sasol’s Ikusasa programme a number of projects to

improve the quality of electrical supply through upgrading of

existing electrical infrastructure in the Metsimaholo area, are

being undertaken.

Implementing the project became crucial as power supply

protection systems and the general discrimination during

fault conditions had become highly suspect. Some critical

components such as high voltage circuit breakers posed a safety

risk during operation.

The project entails replacement of a new NEC at the Sasolburg

main distribution substation, 11kV cable replacements,

replacement of switchgear at electrical substations, distribution

feeder maintenance in substations and repair and moving of

existing power connections from temporary buildings to new

RDP houses in Zamdela.

The installation of the new NEC, included the supply and

installation of the power cable; joint, gland and termination

of power cable and control cables; opening and closing

New 400V distribution board installed at

Owen substation.

Moving this electricity supply into the house

will vastly improve safety here.

Ikusasa is moving existing house service connection cables from where they were initially installed in temporary buildings into the permanent RDP

houses.

Lerato Lephoto (middle) is the owner of one of the first houses where electricity supply was

moved. From left are some of the project team members, Theodor van der Walt, Rudolf Pretorius

(both from Sasol), Ferdi van Rooyen (MLM) and James Botha (Omohle Construction).

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Making a diffe-rence in people’s social welfare in SouthAfrica can be a tough challenge due to nu-merous social problems. The Social WorkDepartment of the North West Universi-ty’s Vaal Campus recently posted theirfourth-year social work students to theirinternships at various welfare organisati-ons in the Vaal region. During their intern-ships, students had to demonstrate theirmastery of the fivemethods of socialwork, they are: case work, group work, commu-nity work, social work management andresearch. Each student had to plan, carryout, and evaluate a project relevant to thecommunity and the welfare organisationthey did their internship at. The projectscarried out by students fell into differentcategories: childcare, gender issues, fami-ly and youth care, life skills, welfare struc-tures, care for the disabled. One such pro-ject was carried out at the Red Cross Cen-tre in Evaton, north of Vanderbijlpark.Social work students Emily Nale and SinaKgole carried out a successful domesticawareness campaign titled “Matla ke aro-na” (Power is ours) for their project. Thepurpose of this project was to empowercommunity health workers and informthem about the effects of domestic violen-ce.* SouthAfrica is currently experiencing

a severe shortage of qualified social wor-kers. According to 2012 news reports, thecurrent social worker ratio is 1 for every5 446 people. The international norm is 1:5000. The NWUVaal Campus hopes to ha-ve more than 30 students complete the Ba-chelor in SocialWork degree this year andjoin their colleagues in providing this allimportant service to the community in2014.

BOIPATONG. - Stanley Leseane, foun-der of G3 Film Recordings says that hisdream is to put the Vaal on the map ofthe film industry.“G3 is a film producti-on which has already had two moviesplay on Soweto TV, namely ‘Charm De-ceives’ and ‘Sugar Daddy’. “I am cur-rently working with 35 youths who aspi-re to pursue acting and other professionswhich exist within the film industry. Ioffer the youth training in the differentfields. Some of them have alreadymade their

debut on television,” says Leseane whowrites and directs most of the films sta-

ting that he saw a need for opportunitiesto tell stories from a different perspective.18-year-old Thabo Khanye who has hadthe pleasure of being the floor manager forthe production, said, “Being here at G3keeps us aways from many things thatcould get us into trouble.I will use the experience I have gained

here to further my career because this iswhat I want to do after high school.” Lese-ana states that the production is seekingmore young actors to come forward.“This should not only be seen as a film

production but also as a platfform for thosewho would like to pursue film to gain ex-perience,” concludes Leseane.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The North-WestUniversity (NWU) received a three-star ra-ting after becoming the first university in Af-rica to be audited and rated by the internatio-nal Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Uni-versity Rating System. This international rating system is a form

of assessment that primarily judges instituti-ons on their own qualities rather than in relati-on to other institutions, allowing them to shi-ne regardless of their size, shape and mission. It evaluates universities using a broad set ofcriteria and then awards them a badge dis-playing the number of stars they earnedthrough their audit. With its three-star rating, the NWU finds

itself in the company of reputable institutionssuch as theMoscow State Institute of Interna-tional Relations, and renowned private uni-versities such as the Amity University in In-dia and the CESINE University Centre inSpain.

Looking at the results, the NWU’s highestscores were for innovation, for which we re-ceived five stars, and for facilities, scoringfour stars in this category. Professor NicholasAllen, the Institutional Director: InternationalLiaison - who led the NWU’s submission pro-cess, believes that the first step has been takenin positioning the NWU in the global arena.According to Prof Allen, the Universitywould like to participate in the rating systemagain.* Source: NWU (Vaal) News room.

SEDIBENG. - The dazzling midfielder - for-mer Orlando Pirates Steve ‘Chippa’ Lekoelea- might not play top flight football but he isstill a household name in local football. Thisformer Bafana Bafana talented midfielder canstill bang in free kicks like he used to duringhis playing days, before he retired premature-ly from the professional soccer league.

Chippa, the name by which he will alwaysremain known in soccer circles, is still admi-red by the youngsters in this region.

This is despite the fact that more than tenyears have elapsed since he retired from top-

flight football Vereeniging Old Boys FC yo-ungsters could not suppress their excitementwhen they saw this legend playing for the localMasters’ soccer team at Cecil Oldridge Park Sta-dium over the weekend.

The now ‘heavy-weight’ Lekoelea scoredtwo incredible goals much to the delight, of tho-se who were at the Cecil Oldridge Park Stadium. He still posseses the same skill even if he is notas quick as he used to be while he was still play-ing for Orlando Pirates.

Lekoelea believes that he can still teach yo-ungsters one or two things about how to scoregoals - especially free kicks. “I would be happy

to teach them how to do it because there areno more free-kick specialists, even in the PSL.

I used to score those free kicks each an everymatch. I used to practice them a lot. The onlyadvice that I can tell these boys is to keep onpracticing. I play to keep myself fit and I reallyenjoy playing football with theguys,” he said.

Lekoelea still wears jersey No 10 which heused to wear at Pirates before being given jer-sey 1010. Another professional soccer playerwho was in Lekoelea’s team over the weekendwas Lucky Mhlathi. This former Jomo Cos-mos speedy winger can still run. But just likeLekoelea, his body is the only obstacle.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Minister ofSports Fikile Mbalula rewarded South Afri-can athletes for a job well done on their returnfrom the USSA Games in Russia. The SouthAfrican team collected 14 medals, which we-

re beyond the target the minister had set forthem.

In fact prior to the competition, Mbalulapromised the athletes that, if they won 13 me-dals, he would give each of them R10 000as an incentive. However, the athletes surpri-sed Mbalula by coming home with 14.

The South African team achieved 11 me-dals (five gold, two silver and four bronze me-dals).

Vaal University of Technology (VUT)Athletic Club runner Xolisa “New Fargo Ex-press” Zamkele was among those who repre-sented South Africa in this international com-petition.

This down-to-earth runner stole the lime-light on foreign soil when he clinched seventhposition in the competition to add to the tallyof South African medals.

Other local athletes who hoisted the Msan-zi flag high include Stephen Mokoka andGladwin Mzazi, formerly of the VUT Athle-tics Club.

Mbalula was more than impressed with theperformance of the South African’s athletes. He was full of praise for them on arrival andeach of them received a cheque for R10 000as promised.

How many times do you hear people say, “Youcan go and tell Shooting FromTheHip to writewhat he wants to write”, in reference to thiscolumnist. Really!

It is really bothersome to hear local footballadministrators say you can go and tell YoursTruly, Shooting From The Hip, to write whate-ver he wants to write about. This is a clear indi-cation that local sports administrators are notworried about what their federations are goingto say, but about what Shooting From The Hipis going to say or write about them come Thurs-day. Does this confirm that Shooting From TheHip is the only kind of ‘watchdog’ for the Sedi-beng football community? Imagine, just imagi-ne, if Shooting From The Hip was not the eyesand ears of the community. What would foot-ball be like in this region? It would be a caseof everyone for himself and to hell with everyo-ne else! ShootingFromTheHip has since madepeace with all those who paraded me in socialmedia through those character assassinationemails, which I believe some of you still havein their possession! These are the result of lea-ding from the front and you may suffer moreinjuries than many men, and those injuries willbe not accidental. The point I want to drive ho-me is that ShootingFromTheHipwill continueto write about local football. As things standnow, there is no accountability in our sports, especially football, but no-one is brave enoughto `take the bull by the horns’ and say “enoughis enough!” People are too scared to stand forwhat is right for them and - as a result of this– football is suffering. For example, whoeverallowed the sport events sends a clear message:“No-one will tell me anything and I will do asI please”. To make things worse, the very sameorganisers were exposing these youngsters toalcohol, youngsters who were supposed to co-me and play, but were only told that “no-oneplays today, because today the king is here”.What King? The person who allowed this tohappen knows exactly that he/she has the po-wer to decide, as long as money is involved. It makes sense because the teams - especiallyLFAs - don’t pay to use the municipal facilities, hence it is easy for someone to decide the soc-cer stadium is to be used for a traditional event.

And once again Shooting From The Hip hadto come in and rescue the situation as is toooften the case. However, this time around,Shooting From The Hip observed from a dis-tance as the drama unfolded. The poor localsoccer fans had to go back home because themuch anticipated match they were looking for-ward to watching was called off. Picture this. You go to FNB Stadium to watch a big gameand you find a big tent in the middle of the sta-dium, What do you do? This is the venue wheresoccer is supposed to be played. If this is theinstruction from the Sports Ministry to givesports facilities to non-sports events, then thisis unbelievable. What was the person thinkingto allow this to happen?!

It’s unbelievableIt’s unbelievableSHOOTINGFROM THE
