thousands of rands. Trains were obliged touse one line.

This angered commuters going to andfrom work and other destinations.

The incident happened at KwagastroomStation in Zone 10, though commuters claimthe young boy started surfing from Vereeni-ging Station.

He was warned that whatever he plannedto do might well cost his life but the ‘surfingstar’ claimed to know the train, He also ar-gued that he has been surfing for some time.“Wumfazi wami lo” (This is my wife - shewon’t harm me),” responded the 16- year-oldas he climbed on top of the train.

“He was singing and chanting on the train.Suddenly there was a huge bang like thunderand the train stopped.”

“The young surfer fell to the ground withblood pouring from his nose. The cable ofthe train short-circuited. Power and lightswent off and there was no more movement,”reports Releo Mokele.

Numerous commuters wanted to skin thesurfer alive.

They knew the breakdown meant theywould suffer the consequences for days asthe train’s electricity cable had burned up.

Angry commuters wanted to beat him up.Luckily he was saved by the quick responseof the emergency department. The railwaycould not respond to questions asked by theSedibeng Ster.

VEREENIGING.- Unruly members of thecommunity stormed the offices of the Sedi-beng District Municipality.

The ‘stormers’ are believed to have beenANC supporters from various branches inthe area. They allegedly threatened staffmembers and broke down doors and win-dows on Tuesday morning, demanding theremoval of mayor Simon Mofokeng.

They barricaded roads leading to the mu-nicipal offices and businesses in town. The

members are believed to have been busedin following meetings at their respectivebranches, which don’t agree on who shouldlead the ANC in the region. The party’s regi-onal elections are to be held soon and somepeople are demanding the exit of Mofokengwith immediate effect and the introduction

of Toy Manqa or Bob Mthembu, the currentANC Sedibeng regional secretary, as his re-placement.

At the time of going to print Sedibeng Stercould not get comment from Themba Ndaba, who is the ANC’s spokesperson in Sedibeng. The DA in Gauteng, however, strongly con-

demned the protests which they said weresanctioned by two opposing ANC factionsin the Vereeniging central business district.

“According to reports, the protesters aredemanding the resignation of district mayorMahole Mofokeng, accusing him of corrup-tion and nepotism.

“Protestors are wreaking havoc in thecommercial centre by burning tyres and havebrought business to a halt. The DA stronglycondemns violence in any form, and we callon theANC to deal with its internal problemsas a matter of urgency – as residents are be-ing negatively affected by the spill-over intothe municipality’s ability to deliver servi-ces,” this from the DA’s Kingsol Chabalala. He adds that the ANC must separate the par-ty from the state, and ensure that internalstruggles do not affect residents and businessgovernment is meant to serve. Police werecalled to the scene and the situation calmed.Speaking to Sedibeg Ster, Lebo Mofokeng, acting Directo of External Communicationat Sedibeng District Municipality, said theydid not receive any communication frommembers of the community saying that theywould like to see the mayor or stating theirintentions as the mayor would have gladlymet them and heard whatever they are dissa-tisfied with. “We are very sad about suchbehaviour of our people. I would like to thinkthat these people know the correct channelsthey should follow in raising whatever theyare dissatisfied with. As government, wewould have heard them out. The way theydid things is sad. “Had they followed the cor-rect channels and wanted to see the mayoror hand over a memorandum that could havebeen arranged,” Mofokeng says.

EVATON. - Gauteng Public Safety MEC Si-zakele Nkosi-Malebane was joined by Police,Emfuleni and Sedibeng municipal MMCs,the Department of Correctional Services, theHealth Department, the Sebokeng ClusterCommunity Policing Forum and other stake-holders.

This was when she consulted with commu-nities about policing needs and priorities.

The Evaton meeting forms part of theevents attended and conducted by the PublicSafety MEC in the five Evaton regions onFebruary 18.

Consultation with the community gives thegovernment and other stakeholders pointerson how to serve.

The station commander of Evaton Briga-dier Hester Bischoff as host was the first tohighlight the challenges and statistics ofcrime in the area.

The rate of murder and rape was high onthe list followed by house-breaking and theftfrom homes and businesses.

However, some community members saythey have waited too long. They had also ex-pected to be addressed by both the SedibengDistrict mayor and the local Emfuleni mayor,

namely Mahole Mofokeng and CouncillorGretha Hlongwane, as per invitation.

The audience were welcomed with apolo-gies for both mayors not making it to themeeting. Much to their surprise, the MEC ar-rived an hour late while the programme wasalready winding down.

Community members started to leave im-mediately after they were given the platformfor questions and suggestions.

Seeing that the number of the audience hadreduced, and apparently to avoid embarrass-ment, programme director MMC VellyMcera requested the MEC to take the podium

for responses. It is lip-service with compliance to push

ahead the agenda of the day,” said one mem-ber of the audience. The audience kept shak-ing their heads when the MEC said that, interms of the Liquor Act, music in taverns hadto be switched off at about 24:00 and all pat-rons had to vacate the building before 02:00.She also encouraged Police and the By-LawUnit to take serious action against the initia-tions that take children by force.

Most complaints directed at Police werefor lack of service delivery and for being ig-norant when called by the public.

Audience walks out on late MEC

SHARPEVILLE. - All they need is helpfrom the relevant people. The members ofthe Ex-convicts, Rehabilitation and Rein-tegration Forum have gone from A to Ztrying to look for help without success, hence their plea to relevant people, organi-sations and institutions for help. The orga-nisation aims to help former prisoners withtheir reintegration into society throughprogrammes such as communication, stress management, anger managementand the importance of work. Speaking toSedibeng Ster Sipho Ludada, the organisa-tion’s general secretary, says, “We haveexhausted all avenues in trying to get peo-

ple that could help us to help other ex-con-victs so that they become respectable mem-bers of the community.” The organisationoperates from the former Itsose PrimarySchool. Japhta Moeketsi, the organisation’schairperson, adds that they want to do awaywith the stigma that ex-convicts are not goodfor any community. “We also want to stopformer prisoners from falling into the trapof going back to prison, in turn also helpingthe community and educating them about thedangers of committing crime and makingthem learn that crime does not pay,” Moeket-si ends. A colleague of mine believes thatonce a wall falls and you try tofix it, it will never, ever be the sa-me again. She believes that thecracks you have fixed or try to fixon the wall will always showwhenever the cement disintegra-tes. I could not agree with her mo-re. A liaison between two partiesis broken once one shows theother disrespect. A person oncecomplained, “I am upset becausepeople don’t respect me.” Herfriend’s advice: “First, you haveto earn it.” Perhaps I am just nai-ve, but it seems to me that, latelypeople are just not as respectfulas they used to be. Much of ourculture believes that you do nothave any obligation to respect so-meone unless or until they respectyou first. Although there are MA-NY other ways to show respect, these are the few that I find veryimportant. Respect is viewed onmany different levels as well. Itcannot be measured as a quantityand cannot be bought or traded.

It is one of those things that isearned and built over time and notgiven to every Tom, Dick andHarry. But that can be lost withone stupid or inconsiderate act. I

think it’s important torealise that respect asa word can actuallymean different things. On the one hand, the-re is a baseline respectthat we owe every hu-man being. On theother hand, respectmay refer to a sort ofreverence and admi-ration that should be

earned. For example, I would liketo think that I respect everyone Iinteract with on a daily basis andI don’t judge them. Still, there areonly a few people that I respectin the sense that I admire themand they in turn respect and admi-re the person I am, faults and all.Courtesy is given. Respect is ear-ned. Everyone deserves courtesy, general politeness and considera-tion. Respecting someone - that issomething I believe is earned.Treat people the way you want tobe treated. Talk to people the wayyou want to be talked to. Respectis not imposed, nor begged. It’soffered and earned. Respect is forthosewho deserve it, not for thosewho think for themselves. Staytrue to your word. If you say youwill have something done by acertain date, make sure it is turnedin complete and on time. Nowtrue to my colleague’s word, oncetrust is broken it will never be re-gained as it is irreparable.“I’m not concerned with your

liking or disliking me ... All I askis that you respect me as a humanbeing.”Jackie Robinson.

VUT exhibition stand drew a lot of attention

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE

Great minds gathered together last week at the Innovation Bridge exhibitions heldat the Council for Scientific and Industry Research.

The CSIR was abuzz on 2nd and 3rd February 2015 when more than 37 exhibitorsused state-of-the-art systems to showcase their latest inventions and innovations.

The Innovation Bridge is renowned as South Africa’s Premier Technology Show-case andMatchmaking event, bringing products and people together to encouragecollaboration. VUT’s Technology Transfer and Innovation Directorate (TTI) feltprivileged to have formed part of this exciting event under the theme: Green andClean Technology.

The TTI’s exhibition stand drew a lot of attention with many prospective clientsenquiring about its latest innovations and the techniques used to create the pro-ducts on show such as the beneficiation of leather shaving and the water purifica-tion system.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS FORFDDI PARTNERSHIP

VUT management welcomes the FDDI delegation

Anne Naidu

Following the visit of Professor Irene Moutlana, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal ofthe Vaal University of Technology (VUT) to the Footwear Design and DevelopmentInstitute (FDDI) in India last year, substantial progress is underway at our SouthernGauteng Science Park in Sebokeng.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has forged a solid working relationshipwith the FDDI and the IndianMinistry of Commerce, Industry and Textiles. They haveseconded a team of six professional experts to the National Footwear Leather Cluster(NFLC) which was established at VUT.

The Indian delegation from the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI)that arrived at our Southern Gauteng Science Park in Sebokeng last month, has al-ready started working on its brief of developing a curriculum that will help to establisha fully-fledged production line for the National Footwear Leather Cluster (NFLC) inSouth Arica.

On 5 February 2015, Professor Irene Moutlana, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, together with senior management staff, invited the six experts to an official welcomeluncheon, hosted at the Vanderbijlpark campus.

The main aim of the team is to share their individual expertise by developing the trai-ning modules that will enhance the basic skills of existing entrepreneurs and help trainlocals in the art of shoemaking while also establishing links with other internationalpartners.

“We are indeed privileged to have been chosen as the preferred provider of this nichearea by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and we are certain that, togetherwith our FDDI partners, we will meet our mandate to enhance the production of shoe-making in South Africa,” said Professor Moutlana.

The relationship that VUT has forged with the FDDI, part of the Indian Ministry ofCommerce, Industry and Textiles, and the DTI in South Africa, is sure to give the foot-wear industry a step up.

“As part of its efforts to support the clothing, textile and leather sector, the DTI approveda grant of R69.2 million for the establishment of a National Footwear and LeatherCluster through the Competitiveness Improvement Programme (CIP). The work of thecluster is directly responsible for the creation of approximately 2000 sustainable jobsand the reduction in the trade deficit of R1.4 billion through import substitution by lo-cal retailers,” Davies concluded.

“We are engaging with the SmallEnterprise Development Agency (Seda) and

are honored to have been requested tosubmit proposals to establish technology

platforms,” he said after the event.

SEBOKENG. - The Vaal Rand Flying Squad took part inone of the most signal events in their yearly calendar - anannual people-in-uniform prayer for help on Friday. The event was graced by many - from bikers, the whole

Vaal Rand Police, fire fighters and the Traffic department, including the community at large. The prayer was to askGod to protect people in uniform. The Saul Tsotetsi Spor-ting Complex hall, was the hall that hosted the multitudethat flocked to attendand support the pray-er. The event com-menced with a hugeconvoy that marchedfrom the Zone 11 postoffice to the destinati-on venue - the sportcentre.Colonel Mcedisi

Mabala says it ishighly important toengage with the Al-mighty as the work ofpeople in uniform ischallenging. “We arechallenged by manyadversities. It is veryimportant to go backto the Creator to askfor power andstrength to be dedica-ted in their depart-ment,” explains Ma-bala before he intro-duced three fiery menof the cloth to the po-dium - namely Seke-te, London and Lefa

Pheto. The trio figuratively set the house on fire. First manin the hot seatwas Seketewho told the house to stay focusedwhen the road becomes tougher. And the loudLondon shoc-ked the congregation with an astonishing and powerful re-velation. Pheto, the only relaxed one of the trio, asked thehouse to look to the cross when the going becomes tougher.“Remember the great man of God Job when he lost everyt-hing during his test of life. The clock is ticking for Safa Sedibengto select and prepare the Future Cham-pions regional squad. TOUCHLINEhas learned that some Safa regions havealready started with their preparationfor the Future Champions squads, whilehere at home off the field politics delaysthe process.

TOUCHLINE is also aware that SafaSedibeng has already received the rele-vant correspondence with regard to theFuture Champions, but the squad hasnot yet been selected.

The only thing that grabs the focusof local football administrators rightnow is the annual general meeting(AGM) for elections.

They forget that football must beplayed.

For the last three weeks, the only to-pic local administrators entertain dealswith who is going to be the chairmanof the Emfuleni Local Football Associ-ation and Safa President, but nothing issaid about junior programmes.

TOUCHLINE is worried about thecurrent state of our football in this regi-on because attention is on administrati-on, despite the fact that the regionalsquad must be ready for Future

Champs.TOUCHLINE is also concerned with

the divisions between local administra-tors and coaches in this region.

How can one explain this situation tothe interim committee which was selec-ted only two weeks ago - and alreadymeetings are being held by some SafaSAB League teams who are against thecommittee. But why?

Why has our football become a sacri-fice to our egos?

This is not the football I grew up ad-miring so much when I was a little boyplaying in the dusty streets of Evaton. This is not the kind of football I dreamtabout.

This is not the football I fell in lovewith. This is no longer about football. It is a power struggle, to say the least.

TOUCHLINE advises all those whoare involved in football to put their hou-ses in order before the next EmfuleniLocal Football Association election be-cause whatever is happening is not goodfor football.

Can’t somebody grow up and smellthe coffee – this is our football. This isthe future of our children!

Can’t local football administratorsand coaches put aside their egos and pri-de for the sake of these youngsters?Right now what is supposed to happenis the selection of the regional squad forFuture Champions and the rest shouldfollow.

What will we say to these boys whenthis region fails to participate in thistournament, which is one of the biggeston the junior football calendar?!

SEDIBENG. - It’s early days but it seemsReal Hearts will be crowned the Safa Se-dibeng SAB League champion at the endof the season if their current form suggestsanything.

This Heidelberg-based side is sitting atthe summit of the Safa Sedibeng SABLe-ague Log with 26 points from 12 games.Real Hearts played to a 1 - 1 draw withMighty Blues FC at the George ThabeStadium on Saturday. However, Real He-arts FC should consider themselves un-lucky because this was one game theyshould have won to widen the gap at thetop. In fact, poor decisions by the referee, particularly the assistant, robbedRealHe-arts FC of three points, to say the least.

This was poor match-officiating, ta-king into consideration that thiswas a top-of-the-clashes fixture, with both sideschallenging the league championship. Infact, the game deserved much better offi-ciating from match officials.

Mighty Blues FC were the first to sco-re, but their leadwas overhauled in a shortspace of ten minutes by rampaging RealHearts. The visitors put pressure on thehome team and it came as no surprise

when finally they found an equaliser witha full-time score of 1 - 1.

Todate,RealHearts FChas been crownedthe Safa Sedibeng SAB League championwhen, two seasons ago, they failed to gainpromotion to theABCMotsepe League, for-merly the Vodacom League. However, FCRESA,TryMeAgain FC,VUTFCandRealBarcelona FC cannot be ruled out of thechampionship, taking into considerationtheir standing on the log.

A Safa Sedibeng SAB League coordina-tor says that, this season, the league is morecompetitive, and predicting which teamwillwalk awaywith the league title would be un-fair because all the teams in the league puton a brave performance in the field of play, including the newcomers. Meanwhile, VaalMilano FC beat Ghetto 7 FC in another lea-gue match played at the venue on Sunday.
