She says, “When I reached her door a blaze greeted me. I struggled to open the door but when I did, the angry flames were too hot.” Neighbours were called to the scene and helped to put out the fire, but it was too late for Queen as the angry flames had already consumed her. EVATON. - ArcelorMittal South Africa - Af-rica’s largest steelmaker - the LusaCommuni-ty Chest, MM Civils, Vaal Toyota, MooivaalMedia, IFM Radio and Vaal Commando Mo-tor Cycling Club, were pleased to officiallyopen a reconstructed home for the disabled,Katleho Home for the Mentally ill and Phys-ically Disabled (KHMPD), on Friday. The project was a joint venture between all

stakeholders mentioned above and is worthR500 000. Apparently, the home was in con-ditions considered dire by the Health Depart-ment.KHMPD manager Maggie Ntseole could

not express her feelings during the opening. She was gobsmacked. “I don’t have words todescribe the extent to which I’m humbled bythe help I’ve received from everyone - mayGod bless them. I wanted to help my childrenget a proper home today. I can boldly say theyhave a place called home. To all stakeholdersI would like to send my deepest thanks,” saidthe emotional Ntseole during the handover of

the building. The reconstruction project started in 2011,

when ArcelorMittal South Africa was appro-ached by Lusa Community Chest for assistan-ce with the restoration and repair of the buil-ding that had fallen into dilapidation but wasstill used as a residence, housing 26 mentallyand physically disabled adults and children. Some of the challenges noted at the time in-cluded the lack of toilet facilities, poor sanita-tion, a leaking roof and a generally decayinginfrastructure.“The original structure was not suitable for

human habitation and we therefore decidedto assist with the rebuilding of the home bysponsoring R250 000 towards this worthycause. We felt that we could not allow anyoneto live in such detrimental and hazardous li-ving conditions,” says Maggie Mopedi, Ma-nager of Corporate Social Responsibility andExternal Relations at ArcelorMittal SouthAf-rica.Apart from ArcelorMittal’s generous con-

tribution, MM Civils were responsible for

project management, supervision and allbrick-works, while the Vaal Commando Mo-tor Cycling Club sponsored R10 000 towardsthe construction phase of the project. The re-maining partners were involved with all the

finishings and furniture for the house. The home is now a 24-hour state-of-the-art

facility for mentally and physically disabledchildren who are in need of special care andattention.

EVATON. - Drug addiction in PalmSprings has become a problem and manyresidents have since associated it with thehigh rate of crime in the area.

This comes after aman in his early 20’swas beaten on Friday in Section A on thesuspicion that he stole building material. It is alleged by the builder who was em-ployed to build rooms at one of the housesthat the suspected thug stole the goodsthat he (the builder) was supposed to useto build the rooms. The builder apparent-ly saw a container in Orange Farm thathe suspected belonged to him on his waytowork, but as he only suspected the con-tainer was his property he continued wal-king to his destination. It was only whenhe attempted to open his place of workthat he realised someone had broken inand stolen his building tools along withtaps and basins. He alerted the owner ofthe house where he was building that hehad seen his container on hisway toworkand they went to the place. On arrivalthey found the young man sitting in ashack full of stolen goods.

They grabbed him and took him backto the place fromwhich he had apparentlystolen the material. He was assaultedwith a ‘sjambok’ and water mixed withsalt was poured over him. It is said thatwhen the owner noticed that the man wasbadly injured he called police and emer-

gency personnel. “This is a good example forothers. These children are destroying our com-munities. We are sick and tired of working sohard only for them to come and steal from us,”said bystanders. The young man was taken tothe SebokengHospital formedical attention.Atthe time of going to press police had not confir-med whether a case had been opened.

In a surprise turn of events this week,I was forced for the first time in manyyears to agree with a politician - but meagreeing with him has nothing to do withthe programmes he or his party has toimplement, or the person who should bechosen into office, or worse, which ten-der goes to whom. I am simply of thesame opinion with him when he saysSouth Africans should stop complainingabout the problems in the country andget their hands dirty, thereby becomingpart of the solution. This guy made merealise that we whine about everything. If it is not racism, it is crime, if it is notcorruption, it is unemployment; if it isnot the price of petrol, it is the price of

rates and taxes, and if it is not about ourcolleagues, it is about our opponents. The list goes on. This politician is cor-rect to say we should move away frombeing the biggest complainers. We dohave a right to complain and criticise, but South Africans are taking things toofar and offer no solutions to the com-plaints they put forward. Yes, we’re allarmchair critics and prefer to point fin-gers to getting into the scrum and sho-wing people what we can do. Let us criti-cise and offer solutions and not whineand whine and whine until we turn bluein the face. Offer alternatives, ‘finishand klaar’. On a lighter note, I wouldlike to congratulate my colleague and‘big brother’ Zacharia Nale for beingnominated in the 2013 Gauteng SportsAwards in the category of Sports Journa-list of the Year. Congratulations BraZach and I hope you bring it home. Nowhere is a man who does not whine andmoan and complain about anything andeverything under the South African sun,but gets up and gets his hands dirty.Lerato...

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Fuming Sedibengpolitical parties demand the resignation ofSedibeng District Municipal (SDM) MayorSimon Mofokeng. Mofokeng is also thechairperson of the regional African NationalCongress (ANC) and the parties say he is al-ways in the news for wrong reasons. This fol-lows his arrest last Tuesday in Vanderbijlparkfor alleged drunk driving. He was released onbail of R1 000 without appearing before acourt and the case was postponed to Septem-ber 5 following investigations.Vanderbijlaprk Police spokesperson War-

rant Officer Kinnie Steyn says that Police ap-peal to members of the public to let Policeconduct their investigation as no-one receivesspecial treatment when it comes to criminalcases. DA caucus chaiperson Dennis Rydersays, “The latest incident vindicates the DA’sposition that themayor is not a suitable personto be leading the municipality. The DA callson the mayor to step down immediately.”The motion for the mayor to resign was re-

jected by the ANC. The regional ANC hascome out with guns blazing to protect their

chairperson. The party says it will protecttheir chairperson with everything it has. When contacted for comment Andries Ma-petla, director in the mayor’s office, said thematter is the hands of Police and the provinci-al committee of the ANC. “We appeal to thepeople to allow the province to resolve thematter without being pushed. Themunicipali-ty will be guided by the leading party afterthe investigation conducted by the Police,”he said. Regional PAC secretary Appa Pooesaid: “We will speak to the municipality toinvestigate the matter.” . The Congres of thePeople (Cope) had this to say: “The mayormust be suspended by the municipality andANC while investigation takes place withoutany fear or favour.” Cope added that themay-or should be a symbol of respect and a fatherfigure.Nic van Rensburg, regional deputy chair-

person of theFreedom Front Plus, said thecommunity must let the law take its course.“It’s very shocking news for someone like thedistrictmayor to be involved in drunk driving.‘I believe that no-one is above the law,” hesaid.

SEDIBENG. - Gauteng Vaal Netball is despe-rately in need of financial help to represent theregion at the SA u/19 and u/21 Championshipscheduled to take place at Enkangala Regionin Witbank from July 7-14. The Gauteng Vaalteamhas no regional sponsor, so all players andofficials are to raise funds for transport, clo-thing (track-suits, playing kits) and accommo-dation to honour this prestigious tournament.According to Gauteng Vaal Netball Associati-

on president Dudu Msane, each player has toraise an amount of R2400.Msanemakes a spe-cial plea to local companies and business peo-ple to assist the players and six officials so theycan honour the tournament. “This is an oppor-tunity for the players and officials to participatein this prestigious tournament where they canbe selected to represent the country. All playersare students and others are unemployed. Theplayers are from local teams in Sedibeng andthey cannot afford to pay for themselves,” says

Msane. This, however, is the same story everyyear when the Gauteng Vaal Netball team hasto participate in the Netball South Africa tour-

naments. At one stage Vaal Netball team failedto honour a tournament due to financial pro-blems.
