SHARPEVILLE. – Girls initiates aresaid to be more dignified compared to themethods used by schools to initiate boys.

No fights or murder cases are reportedwith the girls while boys are just on a dif-ferent level. “We still hold up our dignityas girls to continue with our culture aswe were taught. When they reach a cer-tain stage, young girls are taught respectand humanitywhich is part of ourAfricanculture,” says Traditional Surgeon AusiMakgwe.Three girls from Phelindaba in Shar-

peville were part of this Proudly SouthAfrican Day on Saturday when they were

accompanied to their homes by old wo-men who also made this journey whenthey were young.Sedibeng Ster was not permitted to in-

terview the three girls, but was allowedto capture the moments of jubilation andlaughter as parents joyously welcomedtheir children back home. Tselane Mo-katsane, Poppy Sake and Mantoa Nama-ne made important commitments on Sa-turday when they came out after fourweeks of intensive training and learning. The trio made bare-footed rounds in

the area, their bodies covered in red clay, while the community members screamedwith jubilation and pride. Johan Modise,

a communitymember, says it is a breathta-king moment to seethese girls followingtheir culture with pri-de and without anysort of fight or com-motion. “It is a fa-ther’s pride to have hisdaughter initiated ac-cording to BaSothoculture. Completingthe course is notchild’s play but it isheart-warming for theparents. We hope therespect and love forthe female initiate isprotected - unlike withthe boys,” says Modi-se.

SEBOKENG. - Cable thieves brought anightmare to most Zone 7 residents. The residents reacted by taking their anger

out on the streets as they protested. “It wasa horrible cross-over to 2014,” said an angryprotester. It was a black NewYe-

ars eve as these residentshad to live without powerdue to cable thieves. An-gry protesters rose up inarms, closing all accessto public transport. Theyburned tyres, chanted andsang struggle songs thatfreedom is about them re-ceiving quality serviceslike everyone else. Theywere spurred on by a po-wer failure that struck justas people were gearing upto enjoy the end of the ye-ar.Thabiso Tsenodi says

they spent about four tofive days without electri-city. “We had a very badNewYear without electri-

city. Mind you, Zone 7 is very dangerous any-way, being without electricity just made itworse. It was the worst (New) Year I everhad,” says Tsenodi. All efforts made by Sedi-beng Ster to reach Eskom at time of going toprint proved fruitless.

Happy New Year! - as we welcome you tothis New Year, 2014. Never before have Ibeen one to believe in making New Year’spledges and I do not intend to start now butI believe that even so we have got to makechanges. We once againwelcome a newyearthat bringswith it amessage of hope. A daw-ning of a brand new chapter in our lives thatshows us that it’s okay to let go of the past

and start again. It’s a reset button. It’s an op-portunity to reinvent ourselves but only if wehave the strength to keep moving forward. It’sone thing to sit down and create a long listof New Year’s resolutions, and it’s another tohave the self-discipline to follow throughwiththem. Embracing the unknown and tacklingsomething new can be very daunting, butchange is very beneficial for one’s personaland professional life. For some, change is ex-citing, but for others, it can be extremely un-settling and many aren’t capable of adaptingto new situations. We have to make changesand get rid of the burden of the past so that

we enter the New Year as changed souls. Inthe New Year there’s absolutely nothing youcan’t achieve. All you need is will, drive, deter-mination, hard work, patience, incredible cou-rage and a lot of faith. So in 2014, don’t holdgrudges, forgive people who have offendedyou, don’t hate. Please don’t pay attention towhat people say about you because theirmouths belong to them and they can saywhate-ver they want. Just never let it get to you ordefine you. Never ever give anyone the powerto make you despise yourself. Allow youselfspace to make mistakes so that you can growand learn from them and never become afraid

because you are unique. Those that achie-ved the dreams that they set out for in 2013,Good Luck, and those that didn’t, this isnot the end of the world. Stand up, dust yo-urself off and continuewith the journey. It’stime for us as a people to startmaking somechanges. Let’s change the way we live andlet’s change the way we treat each other.May love, money, peace and health comein abundance in 2014.‘You will never reach your destination

if you stop and throw stones at every dogthat barks at you’. Winston Churchill

SEBOKENG.- The Zone 14 shopping pre-cinct is set for a huge overhaul to the tuneof approximately R15-million. This was an-nounced during the festive season by actingSedibeng District Municipal Mayor JohnnyTsotetsi together with Emfuleni Local Muni-cipal (ELM) acting Mayor Sello Pitso at thesod-turning event on Reconciliation Day.The long-neglected precinct will be turned

into a multipurpose centre and a cultural pre-cinct with a community clinic, stalls for busi-ness, a historical monument and a theatre forarts and culture. Around 200 people are ex-pected to be employed on the project. “Withthis project we are aiming at reviving this pre-cinct so that our people can have a well deve-loped placewhere they can hold their commu-nity activities with ease,” said Tsotetsi.

“We are a government that is working foryou. When you tell us what you need, we willprovide.“Together with the provincial department

we are going forward with this project thatyou our people requested,” said Pitso whenthanking those who were in attendance. The revival of the precinct is also aimed

at attracting tourists to the township and thebuilding process at the old Eldorado Cinemahas already started in earnest.

SEBOKENG. - Some areas of the Em-fuleni Local Municipality (ELM) re-mained filthy over the festive season. This is after Waste Department labou-rers launched a strike that hit the WasteRemoval function all over Emfuleni.Workers were allegedly protesting forovertime and proper work uniforms. Todate, 149 workers have been fired fromELM’s payroll. Appalled residents evenresorted to dumping waste in vacantareas and on open veld, a desperate me-asure that could cause a health hazardfor themselves and more so for youngkids. Even sports stadiums became in-formal dumps. Even in the new year,it seems the problem has not been resol-ved as some areas are still sitting withrubbish from last year in their yards.ELM Communications head StanleyGaba says: “At this point ELM has nothired any new employees. We did hirea contractor on a temporary basis to dealwith thewaste that has accumulated sin-ce the commencent of the strike.” Gabasends his apologies on behalf of ELMfor failure to remove the rubbish overthe holidays. “We would like to apolo-gise to the community at large for notbeing able to give them the service of

removing their waste. This is a problem thatwas caused by the illegal strike but we havetaken steps to ensure that we give them thebest service.”Gaba adds that people should not feel that

the municipality has replaced workers withcontractors. “The contractor has been hiredto help with the backlog. Once this has beenaccomplished we can then deal with the mat-ter of hiring new staff.” Gaba concluded.

Festive filth still uncollectedOne of many areas that were turned into dump sites by disgusted residents is theZone 11 Stadium in Sebokeng. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha.
