sasol techno x 2013 contributes to skills development

Mathematics, science and technology play an important role in the country and to compete favourably with developed economies, South Africa needs to produce ten times more engineers than it currently does.

To address this socio-economic challenge, Sasol has created

a platform, Sasol Techno X, where young enthusiasts have the

opportunity to engage with the real-world application of mathematics,

science and technology in a way that captivates their imagination.

Now in its 13th year, this premier exhibition provides a dynamic

and interactive way for learners to discover career opportunities in

these three fields. This year, Sasol Techno X will be taking place from

19 to 23 August 2013 at the Boiketlong Sports Centre in Sasolburg.

The learners can discover and satisfy their curiosity in the worlds of

science, maths and technology.

According to the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), South

Africa currently has one engineer for every 3100 people, compared

to Germany with one engineer for every 200 people. In countries like

Japan, U.K. and U.S.A., this ratio stands at about 1:310.

“Sasol’s involvement in specific investments in the areas of

mathematics, science and technology is key to closing the skills gap

in our country and it is crucial that we engage and inspire our future

leaders. Sasol participates in initiatives that support excellence in

education,” said Ivor Zwane, General Manager: Public Affairs Sasol,

Sasolburg. “On a national level, these change reactions contribute

significantly towards enhancing education, while expanding the pool

of talent.”

The exhibition is aimed at grade 7 to 12 learners. The theme for this

year’s event is ‘Curiosity fuels our future’ and the interactive and

hands-on workshops, displays and tours are sure to have the curious

minds of the learners lost in a world of endless possibilities.

In an effort to extend the reach of Sasol Techno X and amplify the

benefit to learners, teachers and the community alike, Sasol’s public-

private partnerships are paramount.

Barrend Pule, a Mechanical Engineer at Sasol, said his whole life

changed when he attended Techno X in 2002. “I was exposed to the

world of engineering when a young engineer explained the world of

mathematics and science to me. This ignited my ambition to pursue a

career in this field and later, I attained my BSc Mechanical Engineering

at Wits University,” he said.

At Techno X, learners have the opportunity to engage with universities

and other industry stakeholders on the practicalities of moving

through course studies and bursary options.

Sasol’s bursary scheme is recognised as one of the largest and most

competitive offers in South Africa. Boasting an all-inclusive package,

this scheme includes all tuition fees, provides the possibility for paid

vacation work and an opportunity to work for the company upon

graduation. Sasol is an employer of choice amongst professionals

in the energy and chemicals sphere and has been recognised, even

amongst students.

Sasol will be providing information on career paths and opportunities

available in the field of chemical operations to learners. Learners

will be able to gain knowledge and be exposed to Sasol’s learnership

progammes in the fields of mechanical, electrical instrumentation and

process. Learners will have the opportunity to apply for learnerships

and bursaries at the exhibition.

“Sasol, and indeed South Africa, needs well-qualified people to build

and strengthen our economy in an increasingly competitive global

marketplace. The learners of today are the mathematicians, scientists

and engineers of tomorrow who will enable us to overcome poverty

and reach the South African dream of a better life for all,” concluded

Zwane.

SEDIBENG. - The Municipal DemarcationBoard’s (MDB) recent announcement that theVaal region will probably become a metro by2016 has not come as a suprise to many. The decision, which came as a rude slap

across the face for the Democratic Alliance(DA), means that ANC-ruled Emfuleni LocalMunicipality (ELM) and DA-governed Mid-vaal Local Municipality will merge to forma class A metro municipality, while LesediMunicipalitywill be part of EkhuruleniMetroby default.Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM)

executive mayor Simon Mahole Mofokenghas welcomed the announcement made by theMDB and says, “The announcement takesforward the long held belief of the SDM, as

resolved by its council through its growth anddevelopment strategy, that the best interestsof all the residents of the area will be servedby a Vaal Metro.” Mofokeng adds that muchthought and planning has gone into the propo-sed transition to a metro.DA Gauteng Local Government spokes-

person Fred Nel says: “The DA will utiliseits legal right to object to the decision of theBoard and calls on all other organisations andindividuals to lodge their objections to theproposed merger. According to theMunicipal

DemarcationAct a period of 30 days is availa-ble to lodge objections and the Board mustconsider each and every objection.”MDB chairperson LandiweMahlangu says

that there is an increasing population in theVaal Triangle which may necessitate a metro.“In our legislation, it has been identified thatthis country is experiencing rapid urbanisati-on. So the only municipality in the legislationthat is best suited to deal with any area thatis experiencing urbanisation is actually whatwe call the metros,” he says.

MDB chairperson Landiwe Mahlangu's recent announcement that the Vaal Trianglewill probably become a metro has not comeas a shock.

I have always known that there are peopleout there that use certain situations to theiradvantage, people that can do anything justas long as they attain their dreams.

I have continuously been taught that every

time one has an opportunity to help someo-ne they should do so whole-heartedly, butI am reduced to tears today as I realise thatthere are people who exist who ‘bite thehand that feeds them’ figuritively speaking.way. Opportunism is the conscious policyand practice of taking selfish advantage ofcircumstances – with little regard for prin-ciples, or with what the consequences arefor others. Opportunist actions are expe-dient actions guided primarily by self-inte-

rested motives. Although it has negativeconnotations when applied to human be-ings the term ‘opportunist’ can be appliedto individual humans who are unprincipledand take unfair advantage of others to meettheir selfish ends.

Having said that I know that there areheroes within most of us. Heroes are thebuilding blocks of our country, they neverget tired. Opportunistic thinking is one ofthe thinking errors that promote the deve-

lopment of an antisocial attitude. To be su-re, no-one can be successful in life unlessthey are prepared for and willing to takeadvantage of opportunity when it presentsitself. But always looking for opportunitiesto profit personally without considerationof the impact on everyone else can be dan-gerous. The next time you want to help so-meone do so with an open heart for youwill be rewarded a thousand times.

Getting rid of the ‘previous’ Emfuleni Lo-cal Association executive committeemembers was not an invitation for someteams to do as they please. For example,Promotion League has now become a‘Mickey Mouse’ League. You know why? It’s because some teams are now play-

ing with SAB League players in the Pro-motion League. They want to win this league by hook-

or-by-crook!Shooting From The Hip is one of the

people who wanted to see the backs of theEmfuleni Local Football Association’sexecutive committee members, but thisdoesn’t mean we must allow our footballto become a sacrifice. If Shooting From The Hipmay ask: why

did the behaviour of the teams’ develop-ment coaches and officials change all ofa sudden?Shooting From The Hip’s message to

those development coaches and officialswho are now turning Promotion Leagueinto a ‘Mickey Mouse’ league is ‘Gentle-men, please stop this.’ Shooting From TheHip is also quite aware that some of theteams still have to affiliate.

As things now stand, most of the teamsplay their league fixture week-in-and-week-out, but the truth of the matter is thatthey are not in good standing. The question Shooting From The Hip

asks is: when are they going to affiliate? At the end of the season when they seethat they finish at the respective positionsor are about to be crowned the leaguechampions? This is something interesting to look

forward to!Shooting From The Hipmakes a special

plea to the entering committee under lea-dership of Philip Ndlovu to look into thismatter, especially those teams who arenow fielding SAB League players. The argument might be that they were

properly signed by those teams, but is thispart of development - with some playersold enough to play in the PSL still compe-ting against 15-year-old boys in Promoti-on League?

It is not a secret that some of the Promo-tion League teams play with young playersbetween the ages of five and 17.In case those development coaches are

not aware, Promotion League is part of de-velopment.Those SAB League players failed to

compete against their age group and nowthey take advantage of these youngsters. They failed to give their SAB League te-ams promotion, so now they take the placeof these up-and-coming youngsters? For anyone who cares to listen, this is

not those township soccer tournamentswhereby teams do as they wish, this is thedevelopment league.Stop it right now!

SEDIBENG. - With the country celebratingWomen’s Month, Sedibeng Ster Sports looksat some of the women who played a part inthe development of sports in this region.Montseng “Mantshadi”Kola needs no intro-

duction in local football as she is one of thewomen who has - for the past 18 years - playedan important part in the growth of women’sfootball in Sedibeng. At the age of 39 Kola is still officiating in

the SAB League and Promotion League. Sheis the first female referee from this region toofficiate in what was previously taken to be aman’s sport – football.Despite all the insults she has suffered from

‘stereotypes’ who still regard football as aman’s sport, Kola has no intention to retirefrom officiating any time soon.

SedibengSterSports pays homage to this ve-teran female referee for her commitment andloyalty in this beautiful game of football. Shetells Sedibeng Ster that she wants to leave herlegacy in local football for up-and-coming fe-male referees in this region. She is an inspiration not only to sportswo-

men but to all women.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Kola says she

still has a lot to offer in football. Kola says thereis a serious need for the growth of female refe-rees. “There are other female referees in thisregion but I’mworried because there are so fewof them. We need to continue to identify them.I knowmost of the people still view refereeingas a dangerous profession. I want to encourageother young girls out there to come forward be-cause refereeing is not only for men but alsofor females,” she concludes.
