SEBOKENG. - A mystery blaze at a crechein Zone 13 has shocked the community andeven more so members of staff.According to staffer Motlatsi Majoe, Fri-

day was just a normal day but turned sourwhen he received a call from a community

member who alerted him that the building ofMotlatsi Creche was burning down.“What has happened is really terrible be-

cause now the children are the ones who aregoing to suffer the most,” says Majoe, addingthat the creche accommodates 130 children. While Police suspect that the fire resulted

from an electrical fault, Majoe says he sus-pects foul play as some eyewitnesses sawthree young boys run from the building short-ly before it burned down.Majoe’s concern is that the creche cannot

afford the necessary renovations as most ofthe equipment has burned. “We almost lost

everything in that fire; now our plea is thatmembers of the community or different stake-holders help us to do the renovations of thefacility. The kids have nowhere to go and some pa-

rents can’t instantly arrange to take their kidselsewhere.” Majoe concludes.

South Africa is turning into a countryof themed months, we have just comeout of the ‘Mandela’Month, we are into‘Women’s’ Month going to the‘Spring’ Month. My focus today howe-ver is on this month which celebratesthe women of this country, wealthy orpoor, black and white. As we celebrate Womens history

Month, we pay tribute to their lives andto the lives of countless other womenwho havemade great sacrifices, embar-ked upon meaningful endeavours, andtorn down historic barriers of prejudice. There is a saying that , ‘study the past

if you would like to define the future’.As women pioneer the future it is impe-rative that we study the incredible wo-men of our past. I know that many ofus have our own individual story to tellof women that have made a personaldifference in our lives, those that havehelped us reach the greatest of heights

in our lives, and those that have beenthere through thick and thin. I was quitetouched when one of the women lea-ders in this region at a function recentlyquoted the seven secrets of a strong andconfident woman from a book that shehad read. I was touched because theseindeed define women as I have cometo know them. The quotes, she said are as follows:

A strong and confident woman knowsthat she is loved, She refuses to live infear, She is positive, She recovers fromsetbacks, She avoids comparison, Shetakes action, and lastly She does not li-ve in ‘if only’ or ‘what if’. The youngergeneration could take a leaf from theolder and perhaps follow these basicbut yet powerful and constructivewords. I personally have a strong bunchof women that have been there and con-tinue to be there forme in times of need.As we celebrate this Women’s Monthlet us not forget the efforts that womenput into everything that they do, the lo-ve that they give, the support that theydish out to those in need and havingsaid all this mine is to simply concludeby saying Happy Women’s Day to allWomen out there andmay you continueto be the pillar that you are in the livesof many.Lerato...

VANDERBIJLPARK. - “There must bea paradigm shift in and among the libera-tion formations at universities. Theymust reorient themselves from being for-ces of resistance to forces of change andtransformation.”This was said by ANC Secretary Ge-

neral Gwede Mantashe on Friday whenhe addressed students at the North WestUniversity (Vaal Campus) on the topic‘Education as a site of struggle.’ He saidat campus level, SASCOand the Progres-sive Youth Alliance should take up dailyissues of students and should lead themin their fight against injustice. “This isadvocacy for militancy and not anarchy,”he said.He said students must be supported

when they demand free education forthose studying for their first degree. “Ac-cess to education, with greater emphasis

on access for children from poor house-holds, should remain your priority.”He said it is heartening that the number

of graduates who graduated in 2012 isdouble that of those who graduated in1995. “It is this progress in education thattranslates into the black middle class gro-wing by 250% over the last ten years.”In his opinion the teaching of history

as a compulsory subject should be sup-ported. “This will help our young peopledevelop a spirit of patriotism. Any nationthat does not know where it comes fromis like a tree without roots.” He emphasi-zed that it is the duty of the ProgressiveStudent Movement to ensure that stu-dents participate in current debates.“You, as students, are responsible forkeeping alive the debate on the transfor-mation of the Potchefstroom campus. You must ensure that it being a lily whitecampus is on your agenda.”

EVATON. – Nearly 10 000 women gatheredatWilberforce Community College in Evatonin honour of veteran woman of strength Char-lotte Maxeke on Sunday.ANC Women’s League conducted the

event and its president Angie Motshega gavea very powerful keynote address to the wo-men. She rebuked the tendency of women tolive through men they depend on.“Young women should start looking for

role models. It’s about time you take controlof your future. “These are days where we willhandgrab the baton we have taken from thelikes of Charlotte, Lillian Ngoyi, AlbertinaLuthuli and others,” says Motshega. She ad-ded that all these icons were very educated.“Teenage pregnancy, drugs, HIV - these arecommonmatters that are destroying our fami-lies and our young people these days,” saidMotshega when addressing the masses. Other

profound words came from Deputy Chairper-son of the ANC Women’s League Dr GwenRamogosi who toldthe masses that it isimportant that olderwomen of the lea-gue teach the younggeneration ways ofbeing dignified likeCharlotte andothers. She also ad-ded that womenshould be proud to

be the pride of the nation, quoting from a po-pular phrase - “You teach a woman, you teach

a nation, but you teach a man, you teach anindividual”.

“This campaign was created to make peoplerealise, whether infected or affected, you need

rers and stu-dents. “The ti-me has arrivedfor adults to ta-ke the responsi-bility to talk tothe youth at lar-ge, talkingopenly aboutissues commu-nities are facedwith every day.“We are the on-es that mustshed light onthese topics sothat young kidsdo not get mi-sinformed,” hesays addingthat the cam-paign was suc-cessful.

Let’s put first things first

Students were recently encouraged to get tested and know their HIV/Aids status by the student representative council (SRC) of the Sedibeng College’s Sebokeng campus. The occasion was the first annual"First things first” campaign.

SEBOKENG. - History was made when theEmfuleni Local Football Association’s (EL-FA’s) Promotion teams got rid of the currentorganisation’s executive committee and repla-ced it with an interim committee. This process took place at the Saul Tsotetsi

Sports Complex in Sebokeng’s Zone 14 re-cently. Philip Ndlovu was elected committeechairman with veteran administrator PhikiKhumalo becoming his deputy. The teams’decision to get rid of the current executivecommittee followed the ELFA failing to con-vene a special general meeting within sevendays as requested by the teams. All PromotionLeague teams were represented in this histori-cal meeting. The teams’ representatives say the “axed”

executive committeemembers were only con-cerned with positions at Safa national officeand not with developing football in Sedibeng.Apparently the teams or clubs had had

enough with the way things have been happe-ning at the Emfuleni Local Football Associati-on with some organisation officials only inte-rested in becoming Safa Sedibeng president. The teams voted for Ndlovu unopposed,

based on his efforts, which saw that footballwas played in Emfuleni, especially PromotionLeague. The teams felt that Ndlovu is the right man

for the position and took into account his pas-sion for football. He will be the chairman ofthe association until the next Annual GeneralMeeting, AGM.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, man-of-

the-moment Ndlovu says he was overwhel-med by the teams’ commitment to take foot-ball forward in this region. “I’m grateful tothe teams for showing enough confidence inme to put me in charge of this committee. Ipromise them I will do my level best to revivethe junior soccer league, which is my first pri-ority.” he concludes.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal Vikings Explosion Develop-ment Cricket Club started training at the Vaal Vikings SportsClub recently.

The club is committed to cricket development in rural andtownship areas. The club is also proud to be associated witha bunch of hard-working youngsters; the work has startedto bear fruit in identifying talent in the Vaal region as theclub gives these youngsters the best of training, so muchso that some of them might realise their dream to becomecricket stars. Since its inception, Viking Cricket Club hastouched the lives of many young cricketers in this region.Their commitment to the development of cricket is some-thing to be admired, to say the least.

“Never measure your success by other peo-ple’s success.” Shooting From The Hip di-rects this message to all development coa-ches in this region. It baffles one to see howdevelopment coaches will go out of theirway to pick other teams’ players just to wintournaments or competitions. Winning atall cost! This is a common practice in thisregion among development coaches. Evenschools are involved in this propaganda! But the question Shooting From The Hip

asks is - how long will development coa-ches continue to be successful by cheating?Shooting FromTheHip is witnessing a situ-ation in which some teams and schools winall tournaments - just because they pickother schools or teams’ players.Shooting From The Hip recently heard

a development coach from one of the big-gest teams in this country wanting to knowif their players took part in the Makgota-mishe Soccer Tournament held in Sharpe-ville.

Mind you, these are players who are con-tracted to the club and they take a risk play-ing without their team’s approval. Somecan dismiss this, saying, “What is wrongif players want to keep themselves busy du-

ring the off season or when their respectiveteams don’t play? The fact of the matter isthat it is wrong for those players to playwithout their team’s approval.

At the same time, it is very annoying tosee these development coaches being proudfor winning this township tournament, when knowing full well that half of the teamwas not his. Cheating!

This is not an attack on anybody – butthis also contributes to the standard of foot-ball in this region. These coaches give usfalse hope, they encourage us to think theyare good coaches or have good playerswhen, in reality, they dont. It is not goodfor coaches to exchange players just becau-se they want to do other coaches a favour

by helping them ‘win’ the tournament. This is the result of needing to win atall cost! Stemming from this is a problemin which, as is too frequently the case, money comes first, always coming befo-re the development of football. Meas-uring our success against other people’sis not part of this beautiful game – foot-ball. Shooting From The Hip doesn’tthink great coaches in this world did thesame while they were coaching at grass-roots level. If development coaches con-tinue doing this they will go nowhere ascoaches. They will be stuck in grassrootsfootball for the better part of their foot-ball careers! Gentlemen, cheat at yourown risk!

Cheat at your own risk!SHOOTINGFROM THE
