SEDIBENG.- Sedibeng Executive Mayor Si-mon Mahole Mofokeng during the State of theDistrict Address (SODA) at the VereenigingCivic Theatre last Thursday, quoted a wellknown author - “Dear Past, thank you for thelessons. Dear Future … I am Ready.”

The SODA was broadcast in four differentvenues - theVaalUniversity ofTechnology, theNorth West University, Ratanda MultipurposeCenter. Evaton and Sebokeng residents wereassembled at the Mafatsana Community Hall, including Sicelo Community Hall in Midvaal.

In his address Mofokeng said since 1994 inSedibeng, as many as 71 244 houses have beenbuilt with electricity, running water and sanita-tionwith over 85%connected to basic services.Accordingly, all old township houses that werewithout electricity for years, and some of thehouses that were without running water andwaste collection, now enjoy these servi-ces.“The historical backlogwas enormous and, subsequently, we still have about 1000 infor-mal settlement households in the region that arewithout sanitation including privately ownedplots, but the progress made has been huge.“On the subject of housing, we are proud toshowcase the housing project in Golden Gar-dens that moves away from the basic‘matchbox’ style of RDP houses to a basic unitthat features a style that is modern, spaciousand well equipped with back yard rooms.

“Whilst many households in Gauteng facea high cost of living, a 20-year review of theGauteng Province has demonstrated that de-mocratisation and significant transformationhas brought about remarkable changes for themajority of people compared to the past.

“It is encouraging to note that the HumanDevelopment Index in Gauteng has increasedsteadily, particularly between 2010 and 2012.In 20 years of democracy, life in South Africahas indeed changed, not just by chance, but bydeliberate change,” Mofokeng said.

Just after the address mayoral awards werestaged in the City Hall, where Mofokeng ac-knowledged all the great men and women whohave done so well for the region.

Meanwhile if all goes well, according toEmfuleni Local Municipality Mayor GrethaHlongwane, the 2014\15 financial year will beone of the most remarkable for this area sincedemocracy. Hlongwane was speaking duringher State of the Municipality Address at theSaul Tsotetsi SportsCentre in Sebokeng onFri-

day. The addresswas held under the theme “ce-lebrating 20 years of freedom and democracythrough public participation.”

During the address Hlongwane mentionedthat her council has electrified 1400 low costhouses in Tshepong phase, established 7 highmast lights in the areas of Sharpeville, Evaton,Kanana and Sebokeng Extension 15 to the tuneof R3,2 million, and that they have been selec-ted as the winner for the 2012/13 financial yearin the Bontle ke Botho Clean and Green Com-

petition by the Gauteng Department of Agri-culture and Rural Development.

The ELM has also created 164 and 925 jobopportunities both in the EPWP and CWP pro-grammes with national office.

“Working together with communities, wecan really change lives indeed by speeding upservice delivery.

Themunicipality belongs to its entire peopleand its future is our collective effort,” saidHlongwane. In Midvaal, the Midvaal LocalMunicipality budget speech was delivered lastweek and an announcement was made on thenewmayoral committee and speaker, due to theprevious speaker joining parliament after theMay 7 elections.

In his speech Midvaal Local MunicipalityMayor Bongani Baloyimentioned that they arelooking at a capital budget of R 85 997 00020% of this is for operational expenses, and theremaining 80%will go towards projects acrossthewards. “If you look at this spend split acrossdepartments, you will see significant amountsof money going into housing, sewer works, ro-adworks, water and electricity infrastructure.

“We’re also very pleased with the R1.2 mil-lion which will go into Phase 2 of the LakesideLibrary, this money will be used for furnitureand IT infrastructure, as the building phase isexpected to be completed within this financialyear by end May. “We will also continue thegreat work in Sicelo by building a football fieldworth R1.5million at their Sports Complex.Contractors will be on site in May 2014 andcompletion is expected in September 2014,”said Baloyi. The new portfolios are as follows:Speaker: Councillor Freddie Peters, MMC Fi-nance: Councillor Pat Pretorius, MMC SocialServices: Councillor Rob Jones, MMC Deve-lopment, Planning&Housing: Councillor Sol-ly Nkhi, MMC Engineering : Councillor Den-nis Ryder, MMC Protection & HR: CouncillorMalcolm Hack, Chief Whip: Councillor PhilPretorius

and around the area, mainly because manychildren are afraid of the police, thereforemaking it difficult for them to report abuse.Different speakers that included theEmfu-

leni LocalMunicipalityMMC for Safety Ve-li Mcera, Lieautenant Colonel Radebe andthe Boipatong SAPS Captain Makhene talk-ed about issues of children’s rights and childsafety. The speakers also had the opportunityto have a face-to-face interaction with child-ren and made sure that they understand theimportance of reporting abuse. Child abuseis a serious issue in the townships, especiallywhere children have no right to say No.Examples that were made by the speakersinclude sending children to taverns to buyalcohol, sending them to shops at night withno one accompanying them.A very important issue that Mcira cited

is that children should stop taking sweetsfrom elderly men because it might lead tobe rape or murder. He said, “Children in South Africa live

in a society with a constitution that has thehighest regard for their rights and for theequality and dignity of everyone. Protectingchildren from violence, exploitation andabuse is not only a basic value, but also anobligation clearly set out in Article 28 of theSouth African Constitution. The aim of child protection is to ensure

the safety, well-being, care and protection ofchildren through an integrated multi-disci-plinary approach.”

Now that the political speeches have beenmade and they are about to be archived, itis time to get down to tough work. After aserious analysis of the different politicalspeeches that have beenmade recently I haveto agreewith oneperson that convinced thosethat he was in conversation with that somepeople are ungrateful and are serious whi-

ners, particularly young people. As we enterthe month of June that is commonly knownas ‘Youth Month’, leave the whiners behindand focus on the issues at hand- the develop-ment of young people in this country and Sedi-beng at large.June is one important month on our calendar

and for the government. This means that thegovernment must make time to reach out to theyouth, to listen to issues that they may be ha-ving, especially those issues that will help be-nefit them and their community. The government must not merely come and

listen towhat the youth think but theymust alsoact on what they say. Many a time the youthis also at fault - You find that they have beentaken out of a difficult situation and given alifeline but they become the ones that com-plain. It is indeed a hard pill to swallow whenyou go out of your way to provide assistanceand those very people you try to help are mostungrateful. The time for complaints and moaning must

come to an end. Let us get up and move fromour comfort zones. The National Youth Deve-lopment Agency (NYDA) is here; you have

every right to engagewith them and theywilladvise you accordingly. They are actually he-re to hear you speak. I encourage the youthof today to change the way they do things. They should start something and be some-thing of their own. Be your own boss andrun your own successful company. The timehas come for us to stop worrying aboutunemployment and so on. Instead, the timehas come for youth to take advantage of allthe available opportunities and stop whiningand grow up.Lerato...

ORANGEFARMS. -Over 30 ‘miniacs’ma-de the convoy to Orange Farms SiyakhulaChildren Home on Saturday to donate clo-thes and food to the homeless and needy.

It was a great event that attracted peoplearound the neighbourhood who were plea-

sed to witness such a sparkling initiative fora good cause. The convoy started at OrangeFarms Park and went to the home, where,at each and every stop sign, motorists hadto give way for these small, dynamic cars.

Sam Mamatela from Red Cross Federati-on says they were very honoured to be a part

of an initiative so overwhelminglysupported by young people:

“We received a call and we joi-ned in with the miniacs. It was agreat pleasure to help out. We ha-ve cleaned the home and cookedfor the children. Spending timewith these children was heart-war-ming,” says Mamatela. Speakingon behalf of the miniacs Tumi Ap-hane, who also opened the occas-sion with a prayer, says, “It is notby their mind or wisdom, but byGod’s grace, that they have whatthey have. What we have is a needto give back to the community. It’salways a good feeling to give backto those who are in greater needthan you. We love you children.”

Phumlaphi Masuku was veryhumbled by the miniacs and giftsthey brought to the centre: “Iwould like to thank God for you.May His grace and glory shine in-to your lives.”

Last Monday I waited with anticipation towatch a weekly soccer programme Extra Ti-me on SuperSport 4 (SS4).

I was disappointed when the programme’shost Robert Marawa announced that Isaac‘Shakes’ Kungwane would be not appear inthe show as he had been admitted to hospital.

Then I said to myself – I can’t wait forhis return come next Monday, as the showwas boring without him. But the next thingI heard was the sad news that the man lovedby so many viewers had passed away.

I was getting ready for to work when Iheard the news that ‘Kasi Flavour’ - the na-me by which Kungwane was known on theshow - was no more. I was confused becausethe man had looked strong and healthy onthe previous shows. Then Shooting FromThe Hip remembered how Neil Jansen hadpassed away, too. The news came as a shockbecause no-one could have expected that so-meone who so recently appeared strong andhealthy would go so soon.

To be honest, Extra Time will never bethe same again. Kungwane was a real cha-

racter, making jokes regardless of how seri-ous the debate. He used to speak his mindon the show and he was a ‘darling’ to manyviewers.Shooting From The Hip is not the only one

who will miss Shakes’s jokes. Everyonewho followed the programme will miss him.The programme was one of the most popu-larly viewed because of this man, who usedto mesmerise soccer fans with his skills whi-le still playing for Kaizer Chiefs.

Those with a good memory will recallhow Paul Dolezar used to say of him, “Sha-kes confused my players; he would look oneway but pass somewhere else.” That’s howShakes used to entertain soccer fans with hisunique soccer skills. He was a crowd-puller.He truly entertained with his God-given ta-

lent, soccer. He was one of the few players who made

their professional debut during the then ‘Iwi-se’ Charity Cup in the 1990s.

This was one tournament that used to dis-cover unknown players and Shakes was thebest kept secret. He was introduced intoSouth African football through the competi-tion.

He would tell everyone who cared to listenthat the kind of football played by BafanaBafana or PSL clubs has added no value toSouth African football, especially to soccerfans. He believed in entertaining footballwhere skill was the order of the day. We willmiss this motor-mouthed legend and the jo-kes he used to crack on the show.

May his soul rest in peace!

MyMondays will never be the same again!

ZAMDELA. - Credo Primary School willrepresent Free State in the Danone u/12National scheduled to take place at Boks-burg in Johannesburg on June 28.

The school has already started prepa-ring, playing friendly matches against lo-cal teams and academies in Zamdela andSedibeng. Not many gave the school achance, taking into consideration that theschool is coached by female coach Dikele-di Sothoane, who is also a teacher at theschool. She is assisted by other female tea-chers.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sotho-ane was unbeaten about their chance to fi-

nish in a respectable position in the tourna-ment. She was full of compliments for thesupport she received from the school’s prin-cipal and her colleagues. She also thanks theZamdela community, especially coacheswho also contributed to the success of theschool.

“I’m very proud with what we have achie-ved as a school and we will represent FreeState with dignity. Our aim is to make ourpresence felt in the tournament. We might bean unknown school when it comes to soccer, but we will show the world what kind of sternstuff we are made of. The boys are lookingforward to the tournament,” says the excitedSothoane.

Sothoane says they will be playing a fewfriendly matches against local teams tomake sure that the boys are ready for thetournament. She believes that there is a se-rious need for the boys to play in as manyfriendly matches as they can before thetournament. She adds, “I know some of ouropponents will undermine us just becausewe are women coaches, but they would bemaking a grave mistake to think that wewill be sheep going to the slaughter. Yes,we are women but that doesn’t mean wedon’t have knowledge when it comes to co-aching. The fact that we qualified for thenationals must be a warning to otherschools.”

SEDIBENG. - As things stand, Vaal Mi-lano is destined to be crowned the SafaSedibeng SAB League champions. ThisSharpeville-based side beat The Birdsand United Scientist FC 2-0 respectivelyin the league match over the weekend.Vaal Milano are the Safa Sedibeng

SAB current log leaders with 71 pointsfrom 27 games, while “The Students”are in second place with 61 points fromthe same number of games.VUT FC’s recent defeat at the hands

of bottom-of-the log Hillside United FCand their weekend 0-0 draw against TheBirds has given Vaal Milano FC the lea-gue championship title on a silver plat-ter. If VUT FC wins all their remaininggames and Vaal Milano lose theirs - theywill still be crowned the Safa SedibengSAB League champions. This is a record that even a PSL team

can be very proud of to play 25 gameswithout any defeat. To date, Vaal Milano FC is in the

SAB League for a second time after clubowner Junior “My Leader” Gushabought the SAB status two seasons ago.The club could make Sedibeng proud tocampaign in the Motsepe League comenext season. Not many gave Vaal Milano a chance

in their debut season in the league. Ho-wever, they made many eat humble piewhen the club finished in fourth place. This is despite the fact that the team

played with players young enough toplay in Promotion League.VUT FC are themselves to be blamed

for surrendering the league to VaalMila-no FC, taking into consideration that atone stage they were at the top of the log.
