VEREENIGNG.- “The community has redu-ced Vereeniging to a place of of drugs andsex workers. Vereeniging is not a place wherepeople can live anymore,” says a man of thecloth, Bishop Abram Radebe of the Work ofLife Bible Church. Drugs recently made nati-

onal headlines when a young girl in EldoradoPark pleaded that the leadership of the count-ry - President Jacob Zuma - respond to thespread of drugs in the area and the country.Zuma responded boldly to the place of helland shame, following the young girl’s re-quest. After the response, all areas were asked

to fight back by reporting drug dealers on atelephone line separate from their police stati-ons. Vereeniging recently launched its crimeand drug line this week through the leadershipof Brigadier Pule Mokoena who is mandatedby President Zuma. Police spokespersonCaptain Fikile Funda says that due to the call

from the Presidential office the VereenigingCluster has been the talk of the town on thesubject of drugs and sex workers.“We are pleading with the community to

start trusting us and using the direct line fordrug dealers and operators,” says Funda. The number is 016 450 2666,

Nuamansays that thanks should go to the mainsponsor, Yusuuf Dadabhay of Bubleesoft drink who changed the lives of thepoor communites. The refugees received

food parcels which included mealie me-al, rice andBublee drinks.Nuaman appe-als to community members to open theirhearts and offer any sort of assistance. With poverty written all over her face

one of the refugees Pierre Harrimana, could not hide her excitement and the lo-ve shown by the charity organisation. She said they were disapponted after

the African National Congress wardcouncillor, Sibongile Sebe together withher committeemembers camewith awa-ter tank. After speaking to them. Sebetold Sedibeng Ster that the refugees willbemoved soon as the place does not havewater and sanitation. She adds that the council assisted with

‘The youth is the future of tomorrow’. I wasquite thrilled by the legendary Ahmed Kha-thrada during his speech at theAnnualGoldenKey Thinkers Symposium of the Universityof Witwatersrand in Johannesburg last week.My delight comes from seeing that the oldergeneration still cares about the youth, unlikemany that have given up on them and do notlend a helping hand.Khathrada excitesmewhen he says that yo-

ung people should remember that freedomdid not fall from the sky but was fought for, that young peoplemust bear inmind that free-dom did not fall from heaven and that free-dom was brought at great sacrifice and withfreedom comes responsibility. Across all raci-al line the ‘Born free’s’ seem to have forgot-ten this as they live a life of ‘I don’t care’.Khathrada excites me when in his speech

he reminds the youth that segregation is gonebut there are still challenges that haunt thesociety to this day, those include hunger, po-verty, unemployment and disease, and that iswhere young people come in. He tells young

people to educate themselves and to becomeskilled because South Africa has a shortageof skills and that the responsibility of youngpeople is to take advantage of every openingthat is there for them to qualify themselvesbecause education is vital. Kathrada also saysthat youth need to realise that they have a res-ponsibility now. “You must educate yourselfto serve yourself, to serve your parents andto serve your country.”Contentment filled my heart when he men-

tioned that South Africa has made progressin terms of democracy and that the most im-portant thing achieved so far is dignity as hu-

man beings but that new problems can notbe solved by people complaining and that in-stead they must do something about it.I believe, as he does, that youth should take

the opportunities that are before them to im-prove themselves not forgetting that there aredemocratic channels to bring the change tothe country that they want to see. Lastly Icould not agree with him more when he endsby saying:‘Leaders do not live in a vacuum and are

not necessarily born as leaders, leaders beco-me leaders in certain circumstances’Lerato...

Here’s to the youth

SEBOKENG.-The residents of Sonder-Water made it clear that they will not tole-rate corruption in the RDP project current-ly underway in Ward 28. They are of theopinion that a project in their ward shouldbenefit the people living in the area beforeit benefits ‘outsiders’.A heated meeting between the residents

and the people overseeing the project reve-aled suspicions that some of the houses ha-ve already been sold to people outsideWard 28. The finger of suspicion waspointed at Ward 28 Councillor MadimabeSeisa who was not present at the meeting.Residents also claimed that Seisa had notbeen keeping them in the loop regardingthe progress of the project.“There is a reason for our suspicion. A

list of people that qualify to get houseswasdrafted, but suddenly names of the people

from this area were replaced by other peo-ple.The project is set to produce 250 houses

of which 50 have already been allocatedto people, but the problem is the fact thatthere are a number of houses which havebeen approved but still have not been allo-cated since March,” says a reliable sourcefrom within the community. What the residents want is transparency

about the happenings of the project. “NoRDP houses will be sold here, we have se-en this happen far too many times in otherplaces and we are not going to tolerate ithere.“I would like the opportunity to fix

things, we must not mix issues. The listthat had been tampered with was sent backand now we are in possession of the origi-nal list. What is going to happen is thathouses will be allocated using this list,”

says community represen-tative Titus Sefatsa whoclaimed that he would takethe matter of transparencyup with the Ward Counci-lor. Seisa says, “I do nothave the powers to sellhouses. I am an EmfuleniLocal Municipality Coun-cillor and the RDP projectbelongs to the Departmentof Housing and they willallocate houses and notme.I do not have the power tosay that houses are ready asI am not an inspector.”Seisa states that people

must understand thatthings must go through theright channels, adding thatapproved people will gettheir houses.

An open letter to all those who are involvedin the development of football in this regi-on, development coaches, administrators, parents, LFAs, to mention just few.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Yours Truly Shooting From The Hip wastasked with the responsibility to be the mana-ger of the Emfuleni Local Association’sStreamA squad that participated at the Emfu-leni Expo u/17 Tournament over the wee-kend. Shooting From The Hip will alwayscherish this opportunity to work with such abunch of talented youngsters in this region, particularly the Emfuleni area. Working withthese boys was something special taking into

consideration their individual brilliance. No doubt, most, if not all of them have

bright futures ahead of them as far as footballis concerned, but only iftheir mentors - in this casetheir coaches - at club le-vel realise this. This brings Shooting

From The Hip to the pointthatmost of these youngs-ters don’t get: game-timeat their respective clubs. In fact most of the playersin Stream A squad don’tfeature regularly in theirteam, especially those who play in PromotionLeague. The reason why these youngsters

don’t play is because now most of the teamsprefer to field tried-and-tested players becau-se they want to challenge for the league title.

Some of these boysare left to rot on thebench. They lack ga-me-time and engagingin the simple basics offootball like passingand trapping, and nowtheir confidence islow! Why are we kil-ling such talented yo-ungsters in this regi-on? Shooting From

The Hip doesn’t blame these youngsters forlack of football basics but their coaches for

lack of vision. Now Shooting From The Hipunderstands the frustration of the national te-ams coaches’ experience. What ShootingFrom The Hip has seen of these youngstersis that some of them are not exposed to coa-ching and at this age they are supposed to befully developed. The problem is that most de-velopment coaches are not interested in thedevelopment of these boys - their only con-cern is to win the league. What about theseboys’ growth? How at this stage, or shouldI say, age, can a player not know how to passa ball directly to his teammate? It is quiteclear: the development coaches do not even

give them basic training, which is relevant atthis stage. Sir/Madam, our football needs amakeover in which we go back to basics -not to the drawing board as is always the casewhen Bafana Bafana fails to qualify for majortournaments.Yours trulyShooting From The Hip
