SEBOKENG. - The vicinity of Zone7 turned deadly when a young manknown only as ‘Zuzu’ was beaten todeath by a mob on Tuesday.The incident happened when the alle-

ged former ‘nyaope’ addict was accu-sed of stealing and breaking into a hou-se in the area. He was beaten to deathby the mob and his life ended at Sebok-eng Hospital at his mother’s request.The machines that kept him alive follo-wing the severe beating were unplug-ged after it was established that his spi-

ne was broken and he was brain-dead.It is alleged that what led to the violent

end of the deceased was that he had brokeninto and stolen from a house in his neigh-bourhood. Jerry Cingani, a community lea-der, says it was sad to have witnessed sucha horrific incident. “We tried to calm the si-tuation down but failed. The victim mana-ged to momentarily escape ‘people’s justice’by hiding behind a certain house. We askedthe house-owner to hand him to us in orderto call the police as the case would then beinvestigated. The owner stopped us fromprotecting the victim as we argued that mob

justice has never worked and that toomany innocent people die in such situa-tions,” says Cingani.He believes it was not the community

but a certain group of people who hac-ked the victim to death.The victim’smother was too devasta-

ted to speak to the media after the horri-fic incident. Police confirm they are in-vestigating the case and warn the com-munity to refrain from taking the lawinto their own hands but to hand oversuspects to them and let the law takeits course.

SASOLBURG. - A 41-year old-man wasdenied bail by the Sasolburg MagistratesCourt recently.The suspect, who posed as a priest of

The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) inZamdela was denied bail after appearingbefore the court on charges of rape.It is alleged that on September 29 the

complainant was at her home in HarryGwala, Zamdela, when a man from her

church arrived and informed her that he isa prophet.He claimed that he was going to make

church tea for her to remove evil spirits.The suspect made tea and told the 25-year-

old victim to undress so she could take abath.After the bath the complainant was orde-

red to lie on her stomach and that is whenthe fake priest sexually assaulted her.

The suspect was out on bail after he hadbeen arrested in March 2014 for offencesincluding sexual offences and fraud.It is alleged that the man targets unsus-

pecting new ZCC female members andmisleads them about his position in thechurch. He then attempts to rape them inthe name of healing. The suspect remainsin custody at the Sasolburg CorrectionalService.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- 7-year-old NalediMotsumi has suffered savage bites from a vi-cious dog that turned on her in Vanderbijlparklast week. Little Motsumi has undergone dif-ferent sections of a major operation at the Se-bokengHospital. Shewas hospitalised for fivedays after she was attacked by a neighbour’svicious dog. The matter has since turned intoa racial issue between the neighbours.The incident happened at a friend’s house

where it was believed Motsumi and her otherfriend had usually played.Apparently the dog used to be harmless to

the kids. According to the family of the younggirl, she came home bleeding as the dog hadbitten her on the forehead.“It was awful to see her in so much pain,

but there was not much we could do for her.This nearly destroyed my grandchild’s futu-re,” says the grandmother It is alleged that,since the attack, the dog’s owners have notset foot in the victim’s home, even to showconcern for the child’s health. Motsumi wasdischarged from hospital but her face is notthe same as she came out with several stitchesto her forehead. “It was made worse when thedog’s owners did not even show any remorse.“I’m going to press charges. It is unfair forNaledi to suffer like this without anyone sho-wing some sense of humanity. To whites, wewill always be black,” says the angry grand-mother. Sedibeng Ster could not reach thedog’s owner for comment at the time of goingto print. The young victim’s family is awaitinga doctor’s report to proceed with the matter.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Back from lying low,former Sedibeng District Municipality May-or, Mlungisi Hlongwane has made a comeback into the political sphere in this region.

Hlongwane who has been out of the ‘game’for close to six years was elected to be theregional chairperson of the South African Na-tional Civic Organisation (SANCO) recently.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster on Tuesday mor-ning Hlongwane says that his organisationaims to transform Sedibeng region andstrengthen the organs of civil society.“Through SANCO we are aiming to hold peo-ple accountable for the positions they occupywithout actually serving their electorate. Weare also going to focus on poverty alleviationprogrammes,” said Hlongwane, adding thatfollowing the recent service delivery ructionsit is clear that community members feel leftout and are angry at the quality of servicesprovided. With him at the helm of SANCO,Hlongwane said that programmes that willspecifically focus on uplifting the economy,youth and women in the region will be imple-mented. “We need to bring economic growthback to the region because if you look at thesituation, now we are standing at 1.7 growth

while other areas in the province are at 2.9.Also, the state of service delivery is not attrac-ting investors, thus we want to introduce arange of discussions on economic growth inthe region,” he said. Hlongwane views the up-coming suggestedmerger of localmunicipali-ties into a metropolitan as good news that willbring much needed development.

“ I think that the merger is going to introdu-ce efficiency in local government and willsave the region money,” said Hlongwane whopoints out that SANCO, as an ally of theANC, is going to be the watchdog of the com-munity and that people should not think thatthey are anti-government but that they willbe serving their purpose of being a watchdogas mandated by members of the community.

“We are going to make sure that our com-munities’ needs are served and that the pro-gramme of Batho Pele which hangs in all go-vernment institutions is implemented to thelatter. People must know that this is a revitali-sed SANCO,” Hlongwane ends.

According to weekend reports ELMMunicipal Manager Sam Shabalala earnsR200 000 a yearmore thanPresident JacobZu-ma. The reports state that Shabalala pocketsR2.8m each year, making him South Africa’smost well-paid municipal manager.

The reports further state that Shabalala earnsabout R100 000 more than both Tshwane Me-tro’s municipal manager, Jason Ngobeni, andJoburg’s manager, Trevor Fowler. Joburg’smetro council has a budget of R44bn and ser-ves a population of 4.6 million people, whileTshwane gets R26bn for 2.9 million residents.The municipality services 722 000 residentsand has a budget of R3.9bn. SEBOKENG. - It was just a few months ago when thepetrochemical giant Sasol partnered with the Vaal Uni-versity of Technology to bring theVUT-Sasol Entrepre-neurship Initiative.The first group of beneficiaries recently graduated

with an estimated 60% pass rate, an achievement whichprogramme manager Idah Naile says exceeded her ex-pectations.“When you start something and you are uncertain,

rence Estate in Vanderbijlpark. The aim ofthe programme is to assist female entrepre-neurs to achieve their goals and realise theirbusiness dreams.During the event the participants in the pro-

gramme were given the opportunity to show-

case their business skills by pitching their bu-siness concepts to audience that includedwell-known business leaders, academic re-presentatives and vested entrepreneurs fromthe Vaal Triangle. Two self-made and well-known female entrepreneurs, Esmé Young(Small Business Development, Sasol) andRania Ghniem (Anoud Educational Games,Pakistan) addressed the audience on the im-portance of entrepreneurship and the perseve-rance needed tomake a success of a new busi-ness venture. Rania delivered her address viaa video link from Pakistan.TheEnterprisingWomenProgramme is of-

fered by the EDC, a unit within the Faculty

of Economic Sciences and Information Tech-nology, in conjunction with its implementati-on partner, Aequis Consulting. The program-me is geared to provide business support ser-vices to women who wish to establish theirown businesses, with participants exposed tostructured learning through interactive work-shops and group-centred learning activities.The eight-month programme incorporates en-trepreneurial fundamentals, such as the ex-ploration of business ideas, the developmentof a feasible business model, business strate-gy and branding and culminates in an imple-mentable business plan. Friday, 17 October 2014 marks the daywhen the Vaal University of Technology(VUT) first launched the Student Finan-cial Trust Fund which was held at Audi-torium 100 at the Vanderbijlpark campus.This initiative was conceptualised duringthe first meeting between VUT manage-ment and parents which was held onSaturday, 20 September 2014 at theDesmond Tutu Great Hall.

Staff members, students, partners of VUT,sponsors, parents and the community atlarge formed part of the discussions. DrSegopane Seroka; Executive Director Stu-dent Support Service welcomed everyonepresent and explained how this trust fundwill be able to assist students with grocery,stationery, accommodation and otherneeds. Prof Gordon Zide; DVC: Resourc-

es and Operations was excited and urgedeverybody to spread the word as this is agood programme which could change andcontinue to bless the lives of students atVUT. “Motho ke motho ka batho” mean-ing you are who you are because of otherpeople, said Prof Zide. He continued tosay that without any participation andsupport this trust fund will go down thedrain.

Dr Oupa Moshebi; Chairperson of theInterim Parents Forum briefly explainedthat the project came into being due to theshortfall of funds allocated to VUT by theNational Student Financial Aid Scheme(NSFAS). “Research has to be done inorder to understand the needs of the stu-dents” he said.

The Vaal University of Technology Centrefor Renewable Energy andWater (CREW)held an information sharing conferenceon 26 September 2014 at VUT SouthernGauteng Science Park.

The invitation to the event was limited todepartments within CREW and the aim ofthe conference was to create and developsynergy in work packages and researchfocus areas as energy and water are cor-related, they cannot be separated.

“There are gaps we have identified and wefelt we need to develop synergy and notwork in silos. One needs to know whatthe other is doing so we can find ways tocollaborate,” said Professor Ochieng Aoyi,Director: CREW. He gave an overview of

the background, current team and struc-ture, vision and mission, and the strategyof the centre. He added that the researchfocus of the centre is to add value to life.The information sharing conferencecould not have happened at a better time,with certain metropolitan areas such asTshwane and Ekurhuleni being in thenews with regards to shortages of water.

“The conference will certainly help de-velop research that will find ways to me-diate a way forward on how we can assistthe next generation,” said Professor Aoyi.He went on to say that he appreciated thecourage and determination to ensure re-search was successful.

In keeping with the 20 years of democ-racy theme, the question of transfor-mation is still a highly contested sub-ject at all levels. Vibrant discussions onthe topic continue to dominate withinhouseholds and between the inner cir-cles of organised labour, business, in-dustry, government as well as the highereducation sector.

As we endeavour to avert the past anddeal with the remnants of apartheid, anew, more vibrant and open-minded so-ciety is forming. Without being derailedfrom the main attraction of transform-ing society, we should remain focusedat the levels at which we are placed aschange agents handling transformationwithin the higher education sector.

Transformative leaders gathered at theVaal University of Technology on 30September 2014, under the auspices ofthe Social Justice and TransformationUnit, armed with an agenda towardsfinding amicable solutions of redressinginequalities in the landscape of highereducation in South Africa.

After much deliberation on an array ofissues that affect all institutions, a newculture of collaboration for change be-gan to emerge. Discussions provokedleaders to candidly discuss the transfor-mation challenges and bring to the foreunity in diversity. Higher educationneeds to take up its role in supportingsubstantive democracy and the goals ofa transforming democratic society.

SEBOKENG. - It is not every day that localsget to have wine-tasting events coming theirway. This perception is beginning to change.

Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) andthe Department of Local Economic Develop-ment (LED) partnered with Rain Forest Pro-ductions to bring wine lovers the two-day se-cond Sebokeng Premier Wine Festi-Vaal atthe Zone 14 Saul Tsotetsi Sport Complex.

The event boasted more than 10 unique wi-ne exhibitors who not only allowed the gueststo savour their different wines but also offereda bit of an education about wine in general.

ELM MMC for Local Economic Develop-ment (LED) Khulu Malindi in his welcomingaddress told the guests that taking advantageof the Vaal River meant turning the Vaal regi-

on into one of the most prominent tourist at-tractions. “The Vaal River Carnival can beco-me bigger than most events.We have the riverat our disposal,” said Malindi.

Malindi added that the region had manyother tourist attractions which can easily drawpeople from outside areas.

A first-time Sebokeng Premier Wine Festi-Vaal attender Wendy Mntambo stated that theevent would have been better if it was out-doors: “I was expecting the event to be out-doors but the weather was just not in our fa-vour. The event in itself exceeded my expec-tations as it was very well put together,” shesaid. The event ended with music which crea-ted a mood of relaxation and exhibitors wereable to sell a few bottles of wine during thecourse of the day.

SEBOKENG.- Sebok-eng Evolution is a non-profit organisation ba-sed in Zone 14 aimed atuplifting the lives of theordinary Sedibeng com-munity.

The organisation wasestablished in Septem-ber this year by the am-bitious youth from Zone14: Molefi Motlamelle(chairman), TshepisoMira (treasure), PapikiKhanya (organizer) andDieketseng Majola (se-cretary). The organisati-on has joined forceswith the Zone 14 Wardcouncillor Bennet Jan-tjie to achieve its objec-tive.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the organisati-on’s chairman Motlamelle says the main aimis to change the mindset of the community,especially young people who have becomedrug addicts. He says theywant to bring backactivities to the township to keep the youthbusy and entertained.

“It is a concern to us as young people thatour friends need our help to live a positivelife-style. The organisation is two monthsold and we will host a number of events forSebokeng community, in particularly youthand elderly people,” says Motlamelle.

His sentiments were echoed by the Wardcouncillor Jantjie who believes that the areaneeds development. He says when he wasapproached by the organisation, he saw anopportunity to reach young people in the

area.He told Sedibeng Ster that this is a good

As Wardcouncillor I’m very proud and honoured tobe associated with this organisation. I willtry very hard to help them tomake a differen-ce in our community,” says excited Jantjie.

Meanwhile the Sebokeng Evolution willhost their first event for Zone 14, Zone 16and Zone 17 crèches at Saul Tsotetsi SportsComplex in Zone 14, Sebokeng on Novem-ber 7. They also revealed that they will behosting another granny’s event at Chesa Ny-ama in Zone 14 on November 26.

SEDIBENG. - Sedibeng soccer te-ams’ officials, coaches and admini-strators went to the Safa House offi-ces to demand the national office tointervene in Safa Sedibeng’s affairson Tuesday. Sedibeng Ster has lear-ned that the problem started whenTheNationalLottery deposited an es-timated R50 3000 into Safa Sedi-beng’s account.

The teams’ representative feels,seeing that there is no accountabilityat Safa Sedibeng, national officeshould intervene because they belie-ve the money will end up in thewrong hands. It is no secret that theregional executive committee is divi-ded by the suspension of the regionalsecretary Star Hlongwane.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport,Junior Gusha, , a concerned group le-ader, says they want Safa’s nationaloffice to intervene before the moneyismisused by the Safa Sedibeng Exe-cutive Committee members. Gushasays as a team, they want the moneyto be used for development purposesat the local football associations (LE-FAs). “We want Safa National to in-tervene immediately because ourfootball administration in this regionis in amess andwe are concerned thatthe money will be misspent. We alsodemand a change of leadership be-cause the current executive commit-tee has failed football in this region,”says Gusha. To make matters worse,Gusha says the Safa Sedibeng SABRegional League teams are still wai-ting for their prize money from theregion. Meanwhile, Sedibeng SterSportswas stillwaiting for a responsefrom Safa National Office at the timeof going to print.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Emfuleni Local Mu-nicipality hosted a successful OR Tambo InterMunicipality Games at Cecil Oldridge Park,otherwise, known as Shakespeare Stadium onFriday. The venue was packed to capacitywhen all Gautengmunicipalities came to parti-cipate in these annual municipal games.

Unfortunately both the Sedibeng DistrictMunicipality and Emfuleni soccer teams failedto live up to expectations as the hosts. Both te-ams failed to make it to the finals. The pro-

gramme started with the opening ceremony atthe Vaal University of Technology (VUT)’sIsak Styel Stadium where the participating te-ams welcomed the Sedibeng district’s mayorSimon “Sy” Mofokeng. This was before theyproceeded to Cecil Oldridge Park where thematches took place in the scorching sun. Thegames were attended by the football ‘who’swho’ as well as the ‘who’s who’ of politics andentertainment with the participating teams li-ving up to expectations in the field of play.

The days’ marathon programme ended with

a gala dinner ceremony to reward winning te-ams and individuals who did exceptionallywell. Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC ofSports and Recreation, Shaka Radebe, hailedthe games a success.

Radebe says things went the way they plan-ned and he thanks all the Sedibeng people fortheir support. The atmosphere was electricthroughout the day. However, Radebe was notdisappointed with the hosting teams’ perfor-mance, saying itwas all about participating, notnecessarily results.
