Mofokeng stood in the blazing sun, sur- rounded by unhappy residents and told them he would try to resolve their issues to the best of his ability. The residents have in past week complete- ly shut down the use of a roads near the set- tlement, demanding proper housing and ser- vice delivery. The community stated that they were not fighting anyone but were frus- trated by officials who falsely promised to move them into RDP houses, but never car- ried their promises out. Mofokeng said, “I am going to ask you to please calm down, open the roads you have closed and give us a chance to speak to the MEC for Human Settlements, Jacob Mamabolo.” He urged re- sidents to cease protests, adding that many issues need to be resolved, “but in the mean- time our lives must not come to a standstill.” Residents said they would not open the roads until they heard what Mamabolo said about the situation. “We will wait for you to come back to us with answers. Only then will we open the roads,” the residents said. (The roads were opened on Tuesday mor- ning). On Tuesday Mofokeng together with Assistance Mshudulu SDM MMC for Deve- lopment Planning and Housing returned to the area to inform the community that they had met MEC Mamabolo and resolved that money from other projects in the region will be shifted to building houses for the commu- nity of Lengweleng and that a process of in- stalling infrastracture will begin soon. The process of building the houses is expected to be finished around March next year. However only 90 residents qualify for the houses at the moment and residents that do not appear on the database were encouraged to reapply or contact the office of MMC Mshudulu for assistance. “We are pleased with the outcome and the involvement of Mayor Mofokeng which sped things up,” said a community member. Mofokeng, ho- wever, warned community members not to go around ‘inviting’ their relatives from near and far in the hope that they too would be given houses. SEBOKENG. - Residents of Boiketlong in-formal settlement went berserk, ran riot andbarricaded roads. They bayed against poor

service delivery. Hundreds of residents tookto the streets at around 02:30 (am) on October15. Motorists woke to see tyres burning onroads that were choked with rocks and tree

trunks. This was the whole of Moshoeshoe,Waterdale and the R54 roads. The community said that, by October 14,

they had had enough of fruitless meetingswith the Gauteng portfolio committee onHousing and with Sedibeng District munici-pal officials.Four community leaders and four residents

including a woman were arrested by policeduring the protests and charged with publicviolence. They did not appear before the Se-bokeng Magistrates Court. They were ques-tioned and then released from the police sta-tion the following day.One SiphoManganye - who did not partic-

ipate in the protest - said the community hadrepeatedly been disappointed by empty prom-ises. A meeting hosted near the local schoolturned ugly because officials failed to respondto the question of when Boiketlong wouldhave electricity installed and when RDPhouses would be built.A report - in the hands of Sedibeng Ster

from the Department of Human Settlements

stated that the layout plan is circulatingwithinthe municipality and comments are awaitedbefore the report is submitted to the decision-making authority of the municipality. Eskomis finishing investigations in respect of elec-tricity supply for phase 1. The report was ex-pected at the end of September 2014.The report further reads that “The con-

struction for installation of services is expect-ed to commence in Extension 30 for phase1. This will take six months and should com-mence in October 2015.”

VEREENIGING. - ANC Sedibeng RegionalOffices were chaotically violated on Thurs-day morning when a cluster of ANC branchmembers crowded in.They demanded that everyone vacate the

building before all hell broke loose. As if that was not enough, themembers fur-

ther went to the SedibengDistrictMunicipali-ty officeswhere they invaded the building anddemanded that one official - SibongileMphu-thi - vacate the building. Apparently the offi-cial was there despite her connection with acorruption case. The angry mob forced theirway into the building and found Mphuthi. She was escorted from the building by Po-

lice while the angry mob chanted and screa-med, “Out, out, out and ‘phansi ngezikhohla-kali phansi!”Mphuthi was due to be suspended in accor-

dance with ANC policy, says the groups stan-ding chairperson VuyoMzazi. “We cannot beled by corrupt officials. The ANC’s name hasbeen dented enough,” he said during the pressconference held shortly afterMphuthi was es-corted out of the offices.OupaMalunga is another administrator the

group did not want to see.Mzazi says Malunga and his entourage are

sabotaging ANC Regional Secretary BobMthembu and they won’t allow it: “We aresoldiers of the struggle. We cannot stand backwhile the ANC’s image is being smeared,”said Mzazi.Regional deputy chairperson Greta Hlong-

wane was among the delegates deployed tohear the grievances of the members. She wasgiven a short time to explain herself as not-hing seemed to get through to the mob. They told Hlongwane to keep quiet as they

are the one’s that would address her. Theythen asked her why Mphuthi was still wor-king with her R400 000 corruption case pen-ding. They further told Hlongwane that all re-gional AAs should be removed from the offi-ce as their safety and even their lives couldnot be guaranteed if they insisted on working.

Out with Mphuthi and Malunga!

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The management, community and stakeholders of the VaalUniversity of Technology (VUT) recentlytook a bold step.

This was the establishment of an interimcommittee to bail out cash-strapped studentsthrough financial aid.

The Student Trust Fund led by DrMoshe-bi as chairperson of the Interim Parents Fo-rum was launched on October 17.

This was a response to the recent strikein which students went on the rampage dueto lack of financial aid fromgovernment. Theinstitution suspended classes.

The university faces a dilemma: how doesone split the cash equally among thousandsof students?

Trust Funds that include management, stakeholders, parents and students havecome up with a remedy to rescue studentsfrom their critical shortage of food, studymaterials and accommodation. The challen-ges faced by the students are formidable.

“Once we join hands, we can only emerge

victorious,” says Dr Moshebi. He appealed to students to present ideas on

how to utilise the cash. He said the Trust willbe registered as a non-profit organisation withtransparent information. There should be astrategic way and direction in the use of thefunds.

Prof G Zide, acting Vice Chancellor, said

there had been shortcomings to the financialscheme:

“Let not our neighbours go hungry while wehave ways and means to assist. The studentsare the beneficiaries of the trust. We are ourbrothers’ keepers. “We are responsible asmembers of the community. Irrespective ofwho you are orwhere you come from, the cour-

age is in you to take the first step.”Richard Makhalemele of R.M Makhale-

mele and Associates Inc (attorneys at law),promised together with his associates andother stakeholders from Sasolburg to comeup with amicable help to boost the trust. An-other R300 000 was also donated by GoodSamaritans.

Informal crèche owners from the Sebokeng areas last week garnered certificates inECD from ASHA’s caretraining funded by the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund.

SEBOKEG. - ASHA Trust recently hostedan enthusiastic group of informal crèche ow-ners at Leema Mokotuli Primary School. The group of 20 women were awarded

certificates for successfully completing anASHA care-training programme in earlychildhood development (ECD), which theystarted in March this year.Funded by the Anglo American Chair-

man’s Fund, the care-training conducted inSebokeng is one of ASHA Trust’s ECD trai-ning and mentoring initiatives. In addition to contact classroom sessions,

the training programmes include on-sitementoring and support to participating crè-ches in order to guide and assess implemen-tation of the practical knowledge and skillsgained.Presenting certificates to the recipients,

ASHA Trust Chairperson Dr Tshepo Motse-pe emphasised the broader impact of ECDskills development to the social and econo-

mic development of areas like Sebokeng.“In supporting government’s prioritisa-

tion of ECD as an indicator for future le-arning success, ASHA has recognised thecritical and widespread role of home-ba-sed crèches in meeting the ECD needs ofmany poor communities in South Africa,”says ASHA trainer Fikile Moloto.Moloto appealed to certificate reci-

pients to take their responsibility for thechildren in their care seriously.“If you do not have a passion for deve-

loping our children, if you do not conductthe day-to-day activities in your crèchewith joy and purpose, then you should notbe working in a preschool.“You should go and do something el-

SHARPEVILLE. - Gauteng Province Co-operative Governance and Traditional Af-fairs, Fire and Rescue Services, the SedibengDistrictMunicipality and the fire departmentof the Emfuleni Local Municiplity, ELM.These bodies last week held a Provincial

Fire Awareness Week themed “workingsmoke alarm saves lives” at the George Tha-be Stadium. The event targeted young school children

from various Sharpeville primary schools.Awareness was sown through Public In-

formation and Education Relations, PIER.“The aim of the campaign is to educate

the community, especially school kids, onthe dangers of fire.Kids should be targeted as they are the

most vulnerable when it comes to disastersand also to ensure that information is disse-minated to the grown-ups,” said ELMMMCPublic Safety Veli Mcera.Mcera adds that in most cases kids are not

aware of the dangers that surround them andnormally find themselves in compromisingsituations that may harm them or even causedeath. One community member awarded with a

certificate in Basic Fire Fighting - Isaac

Moeletse - said, “I appreciate the training wereceived because I will now be able to helpmy neighbours in an emergency.”Moeletsi added that it is very important

for the municipality to train communitymembers as this will help lessen the numberof fatalities caused by fire. “I believe thatevery street should have at least four people

who have undergone training in basic emer-gency services and fire-fighting. This canonly help members of the community to saveother people’s lives.”

South Africans are lazy. We are sloth-ful, idle, immobile, and inactive andwhatever other terms you can think ofto describe just plain laziness. I have ne-ver been an avid fan of our president butI agree 100% with what he said over theweekend. South Africans are a lazy

bunch and this is a fact. ‘Msholozi’ is rightto make this fact clear that when foreignerscome to South Africa, because they are notused to government handing[out] things, theyget here, see opportunities and thrive. Overthe past month in this region there have beenprotests over service delivery, houses in parti-cular. One would argue that the protests arejustified because of the promises that havebeen made by government, but would I alsonot be correct to say that the community issitting on their behinds to be spoon-fed? The

president is right to ask what is it that causesprotests in South Africa when the rest of Afri-ca is not doing it. He is also correct tomentionthat once these African countries were free,it was each one for themselves. There wereno programmes to deal with poor people. Themost important fact that Msholozi makesmention of is that our people are waiting forgovernment. Our people are not used to stan-ding up and doing things for themselves. Fo-reigners are not expecting any governmentto do anything so they get here, see opportuni-

ties and exploit them hence they have ta-ken over small businesses in this coun-try. They do not expect to be spoon-fed.Due to the extensive roll-out of servicesafter 1994, South Africans have becomedependent on the state. In no country inthe world have you seen government gi-ving people houses free of charge becau-se they are poor, never. South Africansare indeed lazy. Just my view, I stand tobe corrected.Lerato...

VANDERBIJLPARK. - ProfessorMelvyn CFreeman from the office of the minister ofHealth was deployed to the annual GautengNurses Congress held on Thursday at Stone-haven.The event was organised by the Depart-

ment of Health and Education. Its primarypurpose was to convey understanding ofmentally and physically challenged childrenin connection with education. According tothe office of Minister Motswaledi, specialeducation has been used to educate childrenwith disabilities through the Department ofHealth.Professor Freeman spoke to the house that

assembled nurses and educators at Stoneha-ven about the initiative launched by both de-partments to find a common way to train tea-chers through the special schools project. He says children with disabilities need

more care and love from their teachers andcreating a project for this course can onlybring understanding to both nurses and tea-chers.

“We are going above and beyond to meetour challenges from the Health Department. We are coming with solutions for childrenwith disabilities. This is an initiative by the office of Minis-

ter Motsweledi that can only benefit nursesand teachers, who are trained to have an un-derstanding of children with disabilities,”says Freeman. He adds that children with disabilities ha-

ve different ways of communicating whichcan be understood by trained nurses, but notteachers. “By so doing we are trJying to giveteachers the same training that nurses hadundergone in order to find a common groundfor teachers to understand disabled chil-dren,” says Freeman.

Freeman says it was a great honour tohave been deployed for such great event andspeak to great minds.Sedibeng Health Director Salamina Hla-

hane says they are thrilled to have contribu-ted to the special schools projects as theyare looking forward to implement on theirwords.

If Development coaches realisedthat youngsters won’t play forthem for the rest of their lives thenthey wouldn’t refuse when a bet-ter team wants to collect them. Some coaches even refuse whentheir players go to trials becausethey think they own them.

This disease is killing the talentin this region, with coaches deny-ing their players opportunities tofurther their careers in better envi-ronments. Jomo Cosmos hostedtrials for Sedibeng u/15 playersand some coaches refused tobring their players, because theyare concerned about what they aregoing to get out of the deal. RE-ALLY?

Last week Shooting From TheHip asked what was EATING de-velopment coaches in this region. These boys will retire premature-ly because their time was squan-dered by development coaches. Some coacheswere happier goingto local tournaments to get freeT-shirts than taking their kids totrials.

They were happy receivingVIP treatment while forgettingthat their youngsters also need ex-posure. There is something seri-ously wrong with our coaches, inparticular development coaches.

If parents don’t intervene, their children’s talent isselfishly wasted. The coa-ches were attending a cer-tain tournament on Sundayand decided their playerswould not attend trials be-cause THEY (coaches)were not going there.

They don’t care aboutthese youngsters’ advancementbecause - if they did – I think theywould have brought them for tri-als. The truth is that lack of EDU-CATION in our football is thecause of this – of coaches refu-sing to allow their players to at-tend trials.

Why should I write about coa-ches like this every week? Whydoes it have to be like that – wri-ting everyweek about thewrongsdone by development coaches inthis region? To make mattersworse, some of these youngstersfind it difficult to play at the IsakSteyl Stadium because the condi-tions are much different fromwhat they are used to.

This is a big concern for ourfootball because some good play-ers look ordinary under thoseconditions, in spite of being real-ly talented. They play three hal-ves but - in the last half – theyare just walking in the field, verytired.

To coaches it means nothingthat these boys grow up playingfor their teams and never attendtrials, especially if trials are a stepahead of our development teams. For the sake of these youngsters, please just cooperate and put dif-ferences and egos aside!
