VANDERBIJLPARK. - Emfuleni Local Mu-nicipality (ELM) has twelve active cemeterysites in its area.

Apparently one Tractor-loader-backhoe(TLB) spotted by Sedibeng Ster is used to diggraves for families to conduct funerals overweekends. Active cemeteries are Nanescol,Vanderbijlpark, Evaton, Jacobskop, Rust-ter-Vaal, Roshnee, Sicelo, Meyerton.

Acting Emfuleni manager for Communica-tions Stanley Gaba said Wednesdays andThursdays are the only periods allocated fordigging. Fridays are for burials.

He said Inkokheli is violating the terms ofits contract. The municipality has applied seri-ous clauses according to which a contractorthat violates the agreement, will see the servicediscontinued without further negotiation.Sedibeng Ster arrived at the Vanderbijlpark

cemetery on Saturday. Family members of thedeceased were queuing for the TLB to finishdigging.

Gaba said the municipality knows Inkokheli

has assigned two TLBs to perform diligentlyin respect of digging at the mentioned cemeter-ies.

On the subject of scheduled operations andpayment for graves, Gaba said registrations ofdeath are compiled and paid for by family ac-companied by competent undertakers.

The closing day for payment and registrationfor graves is mid-Wednesday. This is to allowthe proper digging and grave scheduling. ByThursday, Inkokheli is given the schedule tostart digging graves monitored by a senior en-gineer. The graves are dug according to the sizeof the casket. If the casket is more expensive- and therefore bigger than standard size - fami-lies have to inform the officer during paymentthat they are burying in what size or kind ofcoffin. The Police and Municipal By-Law Unitevery week monitors illegal burials or tomb-stone erections. Residents are urged not to useunregistered and suspectedly incompetent fu-neral undertakers. “Doing so poses seriousthreats to the health and well being of the com-munity,” said Gaba.

BOIPATONG. – The community of Smart-ies section, Boipatong, said they were aston-ished, but kept praying to God for miraclesas a man held his wife and six-year-old niecehostage at gunpoint inside a house. The father of Nthati Moshodi (6) - Thap-

elo Mokoena (30) - said he thanks God forHis intervention on Valentines Day.The suspect, Lebogang ‘Lebo’ Ramafi-

keng, was arrested and briefly appeared be-fore Magistrate Jimmy Mmatli at the Van-derbijlpark Court on Monday. He faces serious charges of kidnapping

and possession of an unlicensed firearm andammunition. He is out on R1 000 bail forfurther investigation until March 19.The suspect arrived at his wife’s parents

home while Nthati was sent to the shop byher grandmother.Wielding the firearm, he allegedly de-

manded that the ‘gogo’ tell him the where-about of his wife and child, said neighbours. The old lady managed to run outside into

the street for help. The community werealerted by the screaming of the gogo. They rushed to assist but immediately

backed off on seeing the firearm.Returning from the shop, Nthati froze at

gogo’s scream. Lebo grabbed the child bythe arm and returned with her to the yard, leaving behind the gogo.He was heard by the neighbours saying

he wanted his wife and child or else he wouldblow Nthati and himself away with the gunin his hand. The poor Nthati was beggingfor Lebogang not to kill her.A negotiation team arrived and pleaded

with the man not to take their lives. After a while, the man released the girl

before handing the firearm to the policethrough a window. The police later gained entry and asked

him to hand himself over as they wouldn’tharm or hurt him. The man was arrested.Thapelo said he was called by his friend

while at work in Sasolburg:“When I arrived, I wanted to go into the

yard to speak to Lebo and to tell the interlo-per to either shoot me or leave my daughteralone. The police stopped me, saying mydaughter was safe.”Holding his traumatised daughter, Thap-

elo said he thanks God that Lebo’s plan didnot materialise.“I don’t think he intended to shoot both

my daughter and himself. It took five hours for the negotiation team

to convince him. If indeed he wanted to com-mit the crime, he would have done it beforethe police arrived,” he said.Lebogang’s wife had left the previous day

together with their child. Not long ago, ap-parently, the suspect was slapped with a pro-tection order after threatening his wife witha firearm.

SEDIBENG.- There has been a somewhatdeafening silence and considerable uncer-tainty about the issue of whether local muni-cipalities are still due to amalgamate. Now the Sedibeng District Municipality

(SDM) through its acting director of externalcommunications Lebo Mofokeng confirmsthat the amalgamation process is still on thego as approved by the Municipal Demarcati-on Board, MDB. The MDB has declared thatthe redetermination of municipal boundariesof Emfuleni, Midvaal, Local Municipalitiesand Sedibeng District Municipality is stillgoing on. The redetermination will amalga-

mate them into a single category AMetropo-litan Municipality. With the formation of themetropolitanmunicipality, the SedibengDis-trict Municipality will fall away.In addition Lesedi Local Municipality will

be excluded from Sedibeng District munici-pality and be included into Ekurhuleni Me-tropolitan Municipality. There had been rumours lately, particular-

ly on social networks, that the move has beenhalted. “The rumours are not true. In fact, the move towards a system of metros forGauteng has escalated with a move to havethe West Rand District also becoming a Me-tro in 2016. The process is still ‘alive and

well’ and has officially moved into the warddemarcation process to begin preparing fornew wards in 2016,” says Mofokeng. Sheadds that, as recently as this month, Coopera-tive Governance and Traditional Affairs(CoGTA), convened a working session tomap out the transition processes and that allaffected municipalities participated in thesesession. The Democratic Alliance (DA) hashowever lodged a case with the courts to haltthe merger.

SHARPEVILLE - An 85-year-old gogo fromVuka is desperately seeking help after herhouse was burned down last December. Ho-wever, how the fire started remains mysteryas there was no-one there. The granny whoneeds your help is Josephine Ngubane from

Vuka house No 51554. This week Ngubanevisited Sedibeng Ster offices asking the news-paper to help her fix her house because peoplewho promised to help had sent her from pillarto post. According to Ngubane, she went toa local organisation, including the ANC Shar-peville branch, and they promised to help herbut, to this day, nothing has happened. In aheart-to-heart interview with Sedibeng Ster, the granny says there is no roof over her houseand not long ago criminals broke in and tookher remaining belongings. When asked what happened that resulted

in the house being burned, Ngubane says,“All of us were not homewhen this happened. We were called by my neighbours and whenwe arrived the house was on fire.“I can’t really tell you what happened be-

cause I left the house and the next thing I wascalled by my neighbours saying my house

was on fire. My neighbours said they neversaw anyone when this happened except forsmoke coming from the direction of my hou-se. Sedibeng Ster is my last hope because Iwas advised to come here to ask for help fromthe Sedibeng community. I can’t live in thiskind of condition because when it rains it isa problem for me. I’m a pensioner and I can’tafford to fix the house with the money becau-se I also have to take care of my children whoare not working,” Ngubane says. SEBOKENG. - Executive Emfuleni mayorGretha Hlongwane has promised residents ofthe Boiketlong informal settlement betterservices.Addressing a handful of community mem-

much on the issue of land apparently soldfor R45 million by the owner. The owner ap-parently had put an offer of purchase to themunicipality.Hlongwane said it is not true that she men-

to where and how the solar system should

be installed. Many say they want it over theroof of the shacks. Apparently the munici-pality prefers to go solar once the mass lightshave been installed. The community werevery happy when the mayor mentioned thatGauteng Housing MECMamabolo will visitthe area for further inspection for a townshipestablishment plan on February 21.The residents indicated to Hlongwane that

they hope she will keep her word. Theyurged her not to raise the hopes of the com-munity for nothing.

RUST-TER-VAAL. - The residents ofRust-ter-Vaal recently demanded to betreated with respect and dignity that theydeserve by the Emfuleni LocalMunicipa-lity, ELM.Under the auspices of SANCOward 16, the residents signed a petitionagainst what they term harassment andintimidation by MBD Credit Solution, acompany hired by ELM to collect out-standing rates and taxes due to the muni-cipality. At a meeting attended by SAN-CO regional chairperson MlungisiHlongwane, his regional secretary Stan-ley Sinyanya and five executive mem-bers, the residents gathered in numbersto show their dissatisfaction over the te-lephone calls and SMSs they are recei-ving from MBD telling them to pay orhave their property attached. In unisonthe residents made it clear that they areprepared to pay for services but were dis-turbed by the erroneous billing system.Furthermore they requestedMBD to pro-vide a more detailed statement on theiraccounts in terms of the arrears deman-ded. Following the meeting the residentssigned a petition and gave it to SANCOSedibeng leadership and mandated themto challenge MBD Credit Solutions. Re-sidents unanimously agreed that they arebeing harassed and intimidated becauseRust-ter-Vaal is still classified under theApartheid Statutory Act thus ELM sendsthem exorbitant bills.

Warts and all, the State of the Nation Ad-dress (SONA) has come and gone. I will notdwell much on the happenings of the daybut much rather on a few points of interestthat I gleaned from the president’s speech.I am quite chuffed that the president reali-

ses that “Our economy needs a major pushforward.”I also hope that with the nine-point plan

he put forward to ignite growth and create

jobs - which includes, amongst other things, resolving the energy challenge, revitalizingagriculture and the agro-processing valuechain, advancing beneficiation or adding va-lue to our mineral wealth, more effective im-plementation of a higher impact IndustrialPolicy Action Plan, encouraging private sec-tor investment, moderating workplace con-flict, unlocking the potential of SMMEs, co-operatives, township and rural enterprises, state reform and boosting the role of stateowned companies, ICT infrastructure or bro-adband roll out, water, sanitation and trans-port infrastructure as well as, ‘Operation

Phakisa’ aimed at growing the ocean econo-my and other sectors - that everything willwork out well.Quite pleasing is also the fact that Presi-

dent Jacob Zuma said that the year 2015 willsee further improvements in labour legislati-on to further promote worker rights. In hisaddress he further said that the labour depart-ment will review the sectoral determinationsof agriculture, forestry, private security, wholesale and retail sectors. Quite pleasingdon’t you think? The finalisation of the Employment Servi-

It went on from 2008 to 2010she was then selected as the best intern amongst 75 other students. With her parents having a dream of me becoming a teacher she‘failed’ them dismally by choosing the insurance industry. The nowowner of Blue Fashion Harbour and Blue Breeze Domestic Clean-ing Services says: “They were very doubtful and sceptical about mycareer path. I basically ran my ownbusiness from their offices I started performing extremely well fora novices. I did so well I bought my first car at 19 years. My parentswere extremely proud of me and so were a lot of my peers. I had agreat believe in myself that there had to be more then working fora company.”Thekiso had a lot of women who admired her sense of fashion andwould ask where she buys her clothes especially shoes and this hap-pened everywhere she went. People would give her money and askher to buy them clothes or even accompany them to go shopping.

“And my love for Fashion grew. I then started buyingclothes overseas and bring them to SA and I got quitea response from people. I officially started shippingclothing, jewellery and shoes and started selling them

Over the past few years, South Africa’s matric pass rate has shown an increase –from 60.6% in 2009 to 75.8% in 2014. While as a country we are celebrating thisgrowth and hoping it is a reflection of improved teaching and teaching methods,we also recognise the serious problem in the overall education and training systemin relation to a lack of capacity to train and educate for a skills-intensive economy.

Ignoring for a moment the fact that less than half the students that began Grade 1twelve years ago made it to Grade 12 and further ignoring for a moment that theseyoung people need access to occupational skills and training, it remains a factthat more often than not learners need to further their matric education in order toacquire knowledge and practical skills that, together with their matric, will allowthem to enter the job market. Matric is a year fraught with tension, competition, and very hard work. Learners leave this year absolutely worn out and oftentimesill-equipped to deal with the battles that lay ahead in terms of securing a viablefuture for themselves and their future families.

“Thousands of matriculants do not pass with university exemption due to variousfactors beyond their control”, says Natalie Rabson, Marketing Manager at BostonCity Campus & Business College. “As an institution specialising in occupationaland higher learning, we register many learners for further or higher education andwe set them on a pathway to arm themselves with skills and make them work-ready. Of course, many learners do not meet the entry requirements for variousoccupational and higher education programmes and I can tell you that from acounsellors point of view it can be very disheartening and frustrating”.

Boston recognises that too many youth are not reaching their full potential atschool and are not prepared to enter the job market. It’s for this reason that Bostonhas created series of exciting access programmes, including a range of HigherEducation Gateway Programmes offering prospective students various accessoptions into tertiary education without the need to repeat Grade 12.

“We started these programmes with a purpose of providing students a path thatboth leads to credits awarded towards our various accredited and registeredhigher education programmes, as well as entrance to the career of their dreams,“says Rabson.

Boston’s tertiary Gateway programmes offer a range of alternatives, includingprogrammes such as Marketing Management, Business Management, Financial

Boston opens the gateway to higher educationAccounting and Event Management to name but a few.

These are bridging courses that can provide you access to higher education pro-grammes at Boston. On successful completion thereof, you will have met the entryrequirements to a range of higher education Diplomas and secured future verticalaccess to a degree programme, achieved without having to redo Grade 12! Rath-er than repeating matric, Boston believes that a better option is to move forwardwith one’s tertiary education by completing a Gateway course.

The advantages of participating successfully in a Gateway access route is that notonly will one then have access to Boston diplomas (and degrees after that), butbecause there are various pathways one also gets a ‘taste’ of one’s chosen careerand the opportunity to find out if it really is your preferred career choice, or whetheryou should be looking at alternative careers. For example, you may choose themarketing management gateway programme and decide marketing is not for you,but you really enjoyed the financial management side of things.

Then you also get a taste of the time, commitment and effort involved in tertiaryor higher education, and you can see if you are suited to something that is veryacademic or perhaps whether you should investigate a programme that is morepractically oriented towards a specific occupation Continuing with your chosencareer path into the original degree or diploma of your choice, will further give youa head start of credits towards your degree or diploma.

“A good education system ensures not only the development of human endeav-ours, but guarantees the maintenance of adequately functioning social, politicaland economic systems. Over the past few years, the country has seen a doublingof the education budget, yet the resources invested have not resulted in a dramat-ic increase in the quality of education and the merit attached to a matric certificate. While government alone might not have the solution, we at Boston believe that thisdilemma must be made a national challenge that invites tertiary institutions to stepup. Our learners deserve a chance at higher education, and a chance to provethemselves. In establishing the Gateway Programme they have now been giventhat chance,” Contact Boston College Vereeniging for more information about thisexciting opportunity and start your Education For Life at 016 422 1725/6 or visitthe branch at Tembador building, Rhodes Avenue,Vereeniging. Registrationsfor this gateway is still open!!

Water can’t increase without more water. The same can be said for the developmentof football in this country. Players won’tgrow without proper COACHING! Play-ers want to grow up in an environmentwhere there is growth, where they can le-arn and become better players. The only reason these youngsters go

and join other teams is not because theywant to, but because they want to grow;they want to become better players. For that matter, they want to compete

and play alongside better players.TOUCHLINE is aware that some coa-

ches lose their players to other teams andthis always becomes a concern. However, no child leaves his home to

become a ‘street kid’ if there is love andcare.TOUCHLINE’s exact point is that whe-

re there is no growth, there is no future. The-se youngsters want to be challenged, inspi-red and grow as footballers.Football has changed drastically and de-

velopment coaches should also be preparedto change. They should stop doing things in a traditi-

onal way!TOUCHLINE talked to one of the most

educated coaches in this country Conti Kub-heka about the aspects of being a coach. BraConti, as is widely known, said it is the dutyof the coach to empower himself or herselffor the sake of these youngsters. The failure of Bafana Bafana is not the

responsibility of Shakes Mashaba and histechnical staff only – but a true reflectionof the development of South African foot-ball.If development coaches don’t do the right

thing at grassroots level, how can we expect

those boys to perform miracles when theygraduate to the national team? The development of a player is a collec-

tive effort where players get every kindof support - not only in the field of play, but also in education. No one can simply go and live on the

cold streets of Johannesburg. There must be a good reason why he

or she decided to leave home.TOUCHLINE’s message to all deve-

lopment coaches is: Those youngsterswant to learn new things about football, not only by playing but about HOW theyshould be playing. This is what is lacking in the develop-

ment of players – how they must play. Itis no longer about putting eleven playersin the field of play.It is now way more that. Take notes

from TOUCHLINE … !!!

BOIPATONG. - Boxingwas back in thetownships when the Sedibeng BoxingAssociation held a Boxing RegionalChampionship at the Boipatong Hallrecently. This development tournament saw

town and township boxing clubs com-peting for honour on the day. The tour-

nament was organised by the Sedibeng Box-ing Association in conjunction with Emfule-ni Local Municipality Sports andRecreation. It has been a while since a box-ing tournament took place in Boipatong de-spite the fact that two great boxers - BonganiMahlangu and Gideon Buthelezi - comefrom the area. It was also good to see whiteboxers fighting there, which is something

that served to revive the spirit of boxing intownships.Thanduxolo Madikizela of Emfuleni Lo-

cal Municipality Sports and Recreation saysthe response was unbelievable, especiallyfrom both community and the clubs. He hai-led the tournament as a great success takinginto consideration that it was the first timein ages that a boxing tournament was hosted

in the area.“I want to take this opportunity to

thank all the participants, especially theBoipatong community, for making thisevent a success. And based on the res-ponse we intend to host a follow-upboxing tournament in the area to thankall the people of Boipatong for theirsupport,” he concluded.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - It seems to be a two-horse race between Jomo Cosmos, otherwiseknown as Ezenkosi, and the Golden Arrows. Both are bent on reclaiming their Premier

Soccer League status if their current perfor-mance is anything to go by.Ezenkosi became second on the log after be-

atingMilano United 2 - 1 in the exciting Natio-nal First Division League match played at theIsak Steyl Stadium on Saturday. Cosmos hasaccumulated 35 points from 18, while GoldenArrows top the standing with 36 points fromthe same number as Cosmos. The home sidecould have buried their opponents alive but, ashas been their story this season, their strikerswere wasteful in front of goals. It was the sameold story - creating lots of scoring opportunitiesbut failing to convert their chances into goals. This might haunt them at the end of the season.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after bea-

ting Milano United, Cosmos boss Jomo Sono

says the return of his side into top flight footballwill openmany opportunities for youngsters inthis country. He says Cosmos is the only team in this

country that believes in unknown talent.“I know many people can’t wait to see Cos-

mos return to the Premier Soccer League nextseason and I have no doubt that wewill achievethis, taking into consideration how we play. There is plenty of commitment from playersand they also feel it is time for them to playin the PSL. We are not worried about other te-ams as we take each game as it comes,” saysSono.Ezenkosi will travel to Cape Town to face

FC Cape Town at Rugby Stadium on Saturday. This is not going to be an easy outing for Cos-mos, taking into consideration the unpredicta-bleweather ofCapeTown. However, Sonowasconvinced that his side will overcome their op-ponents despite the windy weather of CapeTown.
