BOPHELONG. - A 22-year-old murdersuspect apparently couldn’t stomach loo-king helplessly on while his mother foughtfor her life in sickbed.OnMonday, he appa-rently decided to end her suffering by force,alleged a neighbour.

Another neighbour says the deceasedhad been fighting for her life for months.No recovery was in sight. She was visiteddaily by Dirang ka Kagiso Care Centre towash her and feed her. After the ordeal, thesuspect approached the neighbour, saying,“I have ‘dropped Ma-greeza’,” meaning, ‘Ihave killed my mother.’ He left and wentback to the house. The neighbour says theylater followed him after they realised smo-ke was billowing from the home.

When they arrived, the suspect had alrea-

dy locked himself in one of the burningrooms. They screamed for helpwhile tryingto control the fire. Emfuleni Fire and Res-cue arrived as community members foughtto control the blaze. The mother was foundlying dead in a pool of blood on the floor.Police and paramedics arrived and she wasdeclared dead.

A neighbour said the suspect was foundhiding above the ceiling.

Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said Policeare investigating a case of murder and ar-son. She said the owner of the house - Tom-pi Elizabeth Mendeshi (42) - was foundmurdered. The cause of death is as yet un-known as Police await the post mortem re-port. Steyn said a 22-year-old suspect wasarrested and detained. Hewill appear in theVanderbijlpark Magistrates Court soon.

VEREENIGING. - A truck carrying steel ca-psized last Tuesday morning on the BarrageRoad when the driver failed to control thebakkie. This caused him to land on the otherside of the road.The truck was damaged and the canopy

was lying next to the bakkie with all the steelscattered all over.There were only two people in the truck.

The expectation would be that they werechecked by medical personnel but, instead,they dusted themselves off and continued pic-king up their goods. Neither of themweashurtin the accident. When Sedibeng Ster approa-ched they did not want to give their names,say where they were heading or where theyhad come from. Police could not confirmwhether the goods on the truck were stolen.Meanwhile on the morning of August 13

a cargo-truck driver also lost control, appa-rently after falling asleep in themiddle of BoyLouw Road near Vitro. He was apparentlydriving fromMpumalanga to Newcastle. Theman is aged between 30 and 35.

According to Police he failed to control thetruck - bearing cement - and overturned. Hewas taken to the Sebokeng Hospital for medi-cal attention.

VEREENIGING. - ‘Izinyokas’ are ur-ged by the SAPS to stop stealing coppercables because many of them end updead in the process.

This comes after a 30-year-old Leso-tho national was electrocuted as he wastrying to steal copper.

He died on the morning of August 8at the corner of Assegai Street and RingRoad behind Eurospar in Three Rivers.Motorists and most companies were af-fected by ‘load-shedding’ as the coppercable was cut.

niging Police were called to the scene andon arrival found the man lying face downin the veld with a bolt-cutter in his hand.Nobody had noticed him as he was diggingup all the cables.

Apparently, someone was helping him digup the cables. It is alleged that a man clai-ming to be the deceased’s cousin called poli-ce after he saw what had happened. As a re-sult of copper theft the man sustained seriousburn wounds, according to the police.

His lower body was badly burned and hisbones were visible. Emergency personnelwere also called to the scene and certifiedthe man dead.

Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Fundasaid, “These perpetrators should stop stea-ling copper. They are dying every week andit needs to stop.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The badly decom-posed body of a man in his late 30s was dis-covered behind Isak Steyl Stadium lastThursday at around 3:30 by men walking ne-arby. It is alleged that the men were on theirway to a scrap yard when they were greetedby an unpleasant smell coming from the bo-dy. They alerted VUT security who then cal-led the police. On arrival police found theman lying in the veld on his side with a blackbag over his head. With him were plasticbags containing his belongings and a packof cigarettes. It is not clear where the manhad come from or where he was heading,but it is suspected that he could have been

lying there for approximately three to fourweeks. He had no visible marks on his bodyand his flesh was eaten by contrasts of hotand cold weather. Emergency personnel cer-tified him dead on the scene before he wastaken to the Sebokeng Hospital mortuary. Itwas also difficult to identify the man due tothe fact that he was badly decomposed.When he was found he was wearing bluejeans and a grey sweater with white ‘tek-kies.’ Police spokesperson Kinnie Steynconfirms that a formal inquest has been ope-ned and that the man had no documentationwith him. PALM SPRINGS. - Johannesburg route taxicommuters were left stranded on Tuesdaymorning following a shootout on Monday af-ternoon between two taxi associations inPalm Springs. Community members andpassengers coming out of Palm Springs Mallhad to run for cover as bullets flew.

It is alleged that three taxis from an asso-ciation in Johannesburg ambushed a groupof security guards hired on August 11 by theVaal Wits Taxi Association to protect theirroute. The association wanted to take thePalm Springs to Johannesburg rank and alle-gedly seized 22 taxis and intimidated anyonewho was against them. After the Vaal WitsTaxi Association told them to remove theirtaxis from the rank they ganged up on them.All hell broke loose as Falcon Street cameto a standstill on Tuesday when the men star-ted shooting randomly, forcing communitymembers to run to the nearest hiding place.On the same day eight of the Johannesburgassociation men were arrested. Five were in-jured and taken to the Sebokeng Hospital un-der police guard. Four people were shotdead, including a security guard. Accordingto national Police spokesperson Lungile Dla-mini, 12 firearms were confiscated from the

security guards, 11 rifles and a handgun.“More arrests are underway and the taxi vio-lence is under investigation.

Cases opened against the men are murder,attempted murder and malicious damage toproperty as many taxis were damaged duringthe shootout,” Dlamini says. According toa taxi owner who did not want to be nameddue to fear of being intimidated, more than15 armed men jumped out of the three taxisand started shooting randomly. As one secu-rity guard tried to open fire, they shot himin his forehead and took his firearm. Thesuspects will appear in the Sebokeng Magis-trates Court soon.

SEDIBENG.- The Midvaal Local Munici-pality’s legal battle to remain a localmunici-pality and not be absorbed into a larger Me-tro region with Emfuleni and Sedibeng Mu-nicipalities is still underway, amidstdiscussions of reaching an out-of-court set-tlement. The Municipal Demarcation Board(MDB) concluded public hearings with a

proposal, made last year, to merge three ofGauteng’s municipalities, Emfuleni, Sedi-beng and the only DA run municipalityMidvaal. The merger, which will form a me-tropolitan council, will take effect in 2016.With the formation of the metropolitan mu-nicipality, the Sedibeng District Municipali-ty will fall away. In addition Lesedi LocalMunicipality which is also part of Sedibeng

will be excluded from Sedibeng Districtmunicipality and be included into Ekurhule-ni Metropolitan Municipality. Midvaal Lo-cal Municipality Media Liaison OfficerAaliyah Dangor says that in July, the Muni-cipal Demarcation Board (MDB) presentedMidvaal Local Municipality with an out-of-court settlement offer, and the Municipalityhas since responded with a counter-propo-

sal. “The MDB was expected to respondwithin 7 days, but given the logistical com-plexities of communication amongst themulti-member board, they have requestedan extension until August 19. Any submissi-on made by the MDB thereafter will be dulyconsidered by Midvaal Local Municipality.If a settlement cannot be reached, a courtdate will then be set,” she says.

VANDERBILPARK. - Congratulations arein order for Kingsol Chabalala, former Emfu-leni Local Municipal Democratic Alliance(DA) councillor, who has expressed his exci-tement about being nominated and finally be-coming a member of the Gauteng Legislature.

This comes after Chabalala’s steady politi-cal career of a little over five years. Chabalalastates that, as an MP, he will be able to com-municate issues affecting the community torelevant bodies on a provincial level. “Beinga Member of Parliament comes with moreresponsibility. For me, this means that thenumber of people I serve has increased. The-refore increasing the proximity of my overalldecision-making.”

Chabalala says that, as a leader, he willcontinue engaging people about the petitio-ning method, as he condemns any violent ac-tions from the community. Chabalala conti-nues to state that as an MP, his priority is toensure that Gauteng becomes an open oppor-tunity society for all. “I am currently repre-senting Emfuleni North. I will be driving theissues of the people to relevant structures onprovincial level.” Chabalala concludes.

SEDIBENG. - History repeated itself whenshops belonging to foreigners all over Sedi-beng were looted last week by angry mem-bers of the community.

This is subsequent to a man losing hislife for stealing an item (cooking oil) cos-ting less than R20.

The man, whose name was released asJosiah Ngwenya (28), was allegedly shotin the head by a shopkeeper during an argu-ment. As Police arrived at different areaswhere looting had taken place, they foundthat considerable damage had already beensustained. Shops had been broken into,mo-ney and groceries stolen and equipment sei-zed by rampaging community members.“We want all foreigners to leave,they haveno right to kill our people,” some said.

Evaton Police spokesperson CaptainTshifiwa Mitileni said, “So far 103 foreignnational’s shops have been closed down.

The shooting suspect sustained seriousinjuries when he was beaten up by commu-

nitymembers as hewas trying to flee the scene.He is currently out of hospital in police cus-

tody facing a charge of murder.The gun used to commit the murder was

found at the home of a taxi owner who triedto help the suspect flee and the taxi owner isalso being charged with possession of an unli-cenced firearm.”

Mitileni added that some foreign shopowners have approached Police stating thatthey would like to go back to the communi-ty. The different shop owners apparentlysay they are willing to help the family withthe burial of the victim. Mitileni confirmsthat 53 people have been arrested and onlyseven were denied bail.

When they heard what was coming, foreign shop owners packed their equipment andgoods and started going into hiding in fear of angry community members who werelooting shops.

BOPHELONG. - A sobbing Zandi Khubeka(40) could not hold back her tears after youngmen gained entry to her home by cutting herfence and robbing her of approximately R20000 at gunpoint before dissappearing into thinair. Khubeka, a Muvhango Extension 15 resi-dent, claims it was her turn to host the ‘LovaLova Stokvel’ which took two days recentlybefore she was robbed.

Everything apparently went according toplan until dawn when she and her friend MekeLebitsa were woken by a touch. Two men hadapparently forced themselves into the housewhere they found the two friends sleeping in

the bedroom. They demanded the box thatcontained the money that had been collectedfrom the stokvel. When Zandi resisted one ofthem allegedly stepped on her neck and pis-tol-whipped her across the face. Lebitsaclaims she told her friend to give them themoney because they were aggressive and in-tended to harm them if she refused.

The suspects then told the two friends tohide their faces in the blankets while the otherone was searching the house for valuableitems. They apparently took a plasma TV andtwo cell phones.

Lebitsa says, “Those men were very ag-gressive. I think someone who knew Zandisent them to take the money.

We were very afraid because the two menwere very rude. I am just grateful to God thatthey did not hurt us even though they tookmy friend’s money”.

Nyaope o thabile! What took place lastweek around Sedibeng with the looting offoreign nationals’ businesses is humilia-ting. I believe that nothing more can besaid on the subject as we have all cometo realise that these are pure criminal actsinfluenced by poverty and starvation fromour people. I fail to understand what it isthat makes a whole community raise theirarms to foreign nationals, all because ofstolen cooking oil. It is horrible that a per-son died because of this but did we haveto go on a rampage? Couldn’t we let thelaw take its course like civilised people?

The inhumane and degrading treatment ofAfrican foreign nationals is a threat to demo-cracy and freedom in South Africa. Our bro-thers and sisters on the African continentplayed an important role in the achievementof democracy and freedom in South Africa,yet at the slightest offence we resort to ma-king their lives a living hell in this country.This is pure Xenophobia. Xenophobia is de-fined as the deep dislike of non-nationals ofa host state. Its manifestation is a violationof human rights.

The movement of people across bounda-ries has caused and continues to cause pro-blems between nationals of host states andnon-nationals. This issue is a more complexone which involves many other factors. One

cannot take a simplistic view of internationalmigration and xenophobia. Attitudes towardsforeigners among many South Africans aredominated by perceptions that their presencein the country holds great cost and no benefitfor society, which is wrong. These assumpti-ons are largely untested and misleading.There is a growing perception that immi-grants from Europe are bona fide investorswhereas all African immigrants are illegal.This colours the response and treatment me-ted out by citizens and more importantly go-vernment officials. Unrealistic expectationshave been created in the minds of the popula-tion and now the logical scapegoat would bethat foreigners are taking all the promisedjobs, houses etc. Our leaders bear a responsi-

bility to actively discourage expressions ofanger or hostility towards foreigners.

As we look at pictures of the situationthat took place last week we realise thatonly criminal elements and the poor (inparticular ‘nyaope’ smokers) were deligh-ted with the free-for-all situation.

South Africans need to realise that notevery black foreigner is an illegal immi-grant. We need to stand up, stop being ‘crybabies’ and work hard for what we thinkwe deserve the same way that the foreig-ners are doing and have been doing sincetheir arrival in this country.We can all takea leaf out of their book. SEDIBENG.- Devoted, industrious and res-ilient former African National Congress Yo-uth League (ANCYL) Sedibeng regional se-cretary Bones Modise was elected into theprovincial ANCYL executive structure overthe weekend.

The African National Congress Youth Lea-gue in Gauteng elected its new leadership ata conference held in St George where approx-imately 800 delegates were in attendance.Modise was elected provincial secretary.

treasurer, the partysaid in a statement onMonday. The Gau-teng PEC was dis-banded last year aftera decision taken bythe ANCYL nationaltask team. The AN-CYL is expected tohold its national elec-tive conference nextmonth. The nationalexecutive committeewas disbanded lastyear and replaced bythe National TaskTeam (NTT).

Speaking to Sedi-beng Ster Modisesays that Sedibenghas always had a richvein in terms of lea-dership of the AN-CYL, making menti-on of names such asthose of SakhiweKhumalo and PeterSkhosana to mentiona few. “I would liketo thank all those thatbelieved in me evenwhen I had doubts, all the delegates that werein attendance, all former PTT members andthe alliance structures for the smooth processthat took place over the weekend and promisethat from now on hard work begins in makingsure that the youth and their needs are takencare of,” says Modise.

Modise is tasked with the political admini-stration of the youth for the whole of Gautengin the ANCYL and believes that he is up forthe challenge. “Together with the brancheswe are going to make this a success,” he con-cludes.

This was evident recent-ly when Gauteng Economic DevelopmentMEC, Lebogang Maile last week visitedSebokeng and Evaton entrepreneurs aspart of the TownshipEconomic Revitalisa-tion Programme.Maile is set to visit

50 townships in Gau-teng alone. The pro-gramme is aimed atthe revitalisation andtransformation of theeconomy of differenttownships. jane, coordinator of Vita, says they havesince stopped paying the permits. Theyare now waiting for By-Laws to inquire.“We don’t see the reason we should paypermits for stalls. The foreign nationalswere not there when we fought for de-mocracy. During elections they didn’tvote, yet they are the ones getting moreprivileges. They come here when every-thing is ready. They reap what they neversowed. The budget is tabled every year

but the vendors are never mentioned. Weare also tax payers. Our rights as Vita arebeing violated as there’s no law to protectus,” said Sejane. He said nothing had de-veloped since they’d been told of the draftdocuments to be amended. “Our objectiveis to keep law enforcement, making surethat we don’t deal with criminals,’ saidSuzan Gaba, senior superintendent of theEmfuleni Local Municipality By-Laws,adding that if the street hawkers haveproblems with trading, they should ap-proach the office of Emfuleni Local Eco-nomic Development, LED. SEBOKENG. - The youth last week attendedthe Emfuleni ‘Youth in Agriculture Summit’as Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) part-nered with different stakeholders such as De-partment of Labour, Vaal University of Tech-nology and Youth in Agriculture.The event was held at the Saul Tsotetsi

Sports Complex.In his keynote address on behalf of ELM’s

Executive Mayor Greta Hlongwane, Coun-cillor Abel Morolong stated that Agriculturehad been identified as an economic pillar inthe Emfuleni economic development strategydocument. Morolong further added that theincreased participation by the youth is vital.“It is necessary for the youth of the region

to facilitate food and nutrition security, since

the regional food import bill continues to in-crease while regional agriculture productiondecreases.”30-year-old Queen Mafojane said that sin-

ce the formation of their Co-op, Divine GreenPrimary Agricultural Co-op, in 2012, she andher business partners were able to sustaintheir agricultural business. “Although we arenot able to make a lot of money as yet, weare able to feed all of our families,” she said.Morolong thinks that, although unusual,

the agricultural sector was a fast- growingone and that more and more opportunities arebecoming available for the youth.The event ended with three commissions

being formed where people got to find outabout training, finance and marketing aspectsof the agricultural sector.

More than 20 000 learners were enthralled bythe fascinating world of mathematics, science,engineering and technology at this year’s SasolTechno X. Learners from seven provinces and even twoschools fromMaseru in Lesotho, were captivated bymodern technology and experiments on exhibition,such as the Kalahari Scientist, entertaining Grade 9 –12 students with mild explosions, chemical reactionsand cool experiments.

MEC for Environment, Tourism and Economic Affairs,Msebenzi Zwane, said during the official opening ceremonythat he is honoured to be part of the 14th Sasol Techno X.“I am inspired by the proactive and strategic leadershipthat Sasol is taking, in response to the challengesassociated with youth development. As a science literatesociety, future generations continue to improve uponmodern advances that benefit everyone,” he said.

Jonathan Hartley, an educator who holds a Bachelor ofScience, got into his Kalahari Scientist persona to sharescientific knowledge taking an interesting and differentapproach. “I love to see the students’ faces after thedemonstrations – a look that I experienced many yearsago, when my passion for science started,” said Hartley.

For students who would like to pursue a career in aviation,the Realflight 2000 – a simulator that utilises bothphysical and emotional senses gave them a real sense ofwhat it feels like to fly. Students also had an opportunityto attend a career guidance lecture to gain insights intovarious careers such as flight engineering, ground crewoperations and air traffic control.

SEBOKENG. - Lawrence Kheke Educatio-nal Foundation donated about 50 schoolshoes to needy learners of Boiketlong Prima-ry School recently.

This initiative was acknowledged by thecommunity and by school principalJohnny Letsoalo, who embraced theevent with love. The community sho-wed love and support to the youngKhekhe and his fellows.

Speaking on behalf of the foundati-on Bhekani Mathebula said the dona-tion does not mean you need to be richto give, but that it’s the thought thatcounts: “Life is about what we dowith what we have. Change is a veryvital key in our lives, and to bringchange to others serves the purposeof God,” said Mathebula, who ena-bled the school principal to brieflythank the Foundation and its initiati-ve. “We are a very small, poor school.However, we have a staff of dedicatedpeople who want to impact on the li-

ves of these young children for the better. Wethank Khekhe and the Foundation for suchinitiative and for giving back to our commu-nity,” said Letsoalo. The event was great suc-cess. Learners were given shoes and schoolbags by the Foundation. Khekhe says this is

not the first time the Foundation has held suchan impact event to give back to the communi-ty. After the hand-out learners were also

primped up by a local salon. They had theirhair done so they could start the next day withhaircuts and with their hair done perfectly.

SHARPEVILLE. - The Bona Lesedi Day Ca-re Center in Tshepiso recently received awarm visit from the staff of Eskom Sunning-hill who came bearing gifts and love.

The staff brought food and groceries andspent the day cleaning the premises that caterfor children aged bertween three and six fromaround the area.

Sara Molopa, the Center’s manager, told

Sedibeng Ster that they are grateful for thelove that the visitors showed to the childrenand the gifts that they provided.

“We are delighted with this opportunitythat has been offered to us by these employeesof Eskom and we hope that they do this notonly for us but for others, as well,” says Molo-pa. The young ones were delighted with thevisit and provided entertainment in the formof song and dance to their guests.

Recently our football fields have turned in-to a boxing ring! There are more ‘fists’ fly-ing than footballs, to say the least. Point incase, recently the PSL launched the Multi-Choice Reserve League for u/17 and u/18consisting of the PSL Clubs’ academies,but not many welcomed the league. Sincethe launch of this youth league two weeksago, much has been said and written whichis not good for the development of footballin this country.As usual it seems there is a squabble bet-

ween Safa and PSL about the league becau-se it doesn’t involve Safa academies. Safaalso claims they were not informed aboutthe initiative. However, Shooting From TheHip is not surprised about this, as there isknown to be bad blood between the two or-ganisations.

They always say when two bulls fight,what suffers most is the grass, in this case thedevelopment offootball. The leagueis a good initiativebut Shooting FromThe Hip believesthat Safa academiesshould also be inclu-ded. The explanati-on for this is simple- there are academyleagues that involveboth Safa and PSLClub Academies.The bad blood between Safa and PSL has

nothing to do with football, but with grownmenwho allow their egos to rule. I don’t thinkthis is the start that the new Bafana Bafana

coach Shakes Mashaba wants.In fact, Safa is right to challenge PSL’s de-

cision to exclude theiracademies in the lea-gue because they arethe custodians of foot-ball in this country, es-pecially development.Development is theresponsibility of Safawhether we like it ornot.For example, the

This ongoing disputebetween Safa and PSL is not good for ourfootball. This country has become the lau-ghing stock of other football nations becau-se it seems we can’t do anything right forthe development of football. It is a shame,really a shame!

BOPHELONG. - The primary schools ofBophelong and Seeiso were recently amongthe first to be visited by Build It, which do-nated cement materials and soccer kits.Most government schools do not receive

school fees for survival.“The money received from the govern-

ment is to cover basic needs,” said ThaboSmit, Bophelong school principal. SinceSmit took over the school nine years ago,he has make some tremendous changes. Thecement will be use to upgrade outside on thefloor for Grade R. The school has received

a face-lift and is growing more feasibly.Thanks to Build It and Van’s Building foropening their hearts. Thanks also to the com-panies for their graciousness towards theschools. “You don't have to be rich to makea difference,” said Ismael Kader, owner ofBuild It Vanderbijlpark.He said that, because parents purchased

most of their building materials at his store,he found it neccesary to plough back by do-nating to the schools. This was a clear mes-sage to challenge and make a call to othercompanies or individual members of societyto come to the party

this initiative, the league was built up bytop high schools around Vanderbijlparkand surrounding areas to generate compe-tition among young footballers.Koller says it has been an exciting sea-

son with schools making their presencefelt fromday one.He says schools likeCa-

rel De Wet whose u/20s went through the sea-son unbeaten, Suiderlig Ladies soccer teamwho finished top-of-the-group unbeaten, aswell as HTS Sasol whose u/15s u/17s & u/19sprogressed to the semi-finals, made this leagueexciting.He says he was overwhelmed by the talent

and quality of football on display throughoutthe season by the schools. The much anticipa-ted finals of this schools league is scheduledto take place at SuiderligHighSchool onSatur-day. “We would like to thank all schools who

took part in the Vaal River League and wenowurge schools, parents and the commu-nity at large to come in numbers to supportthe initiative. We will really appreciatetheir support because it is going to be afun-filled day come Saturday,” says exci-ted Koller.
