Mduduzi Mathebula SHARPEVILLE. - The elderely are supposed to be taken care of but an old-age-home in Sharpeville seems to be doing the opposite. Pensioner Teresia Matli (88) last week dis- closed her suffering at the hands of the Nrate- Ntlhokomele Old Age Home and issued a stern warning to families that would like to take their loved ones there. Matli cried her heart out when Sedibeng Ster visited her in Tshepiso, Diventcheng. She said that she had lived at the home for about two years and in those years it was hell on earth as old people were beaten up and given spoilt food, amongst other things. Matli was sent to the home by concerned residents and neighbours who had thought that she would be well taken care ofwhen she mo- ved away from her 36-year-old daughter, Shei- la Raphalo. Matli had to return home after a nurse from the home anonymously called Raphalo and told her of her mother’s unsatisfactory conditi- on at the home. “My mother is not a crybaby so, when she does complain, it surely means that something is wrong. She told me all these things every time I visited her. I thought she was sulking. However, I changed my mind when I got a call from a staff nurse who wanted to be un- known. She specifically asked me to take my mother out of the home. I knew by then she was not happy at the home and that something was terribly wrong,” explains Raphalo. Sedibeng Ster tried to speak to Nrate-Ntlhokomele Old Age Home manager Nthabis- eng Ntamane, who was very rude and seemed uncertain when questions were asked regarding the home and how she manages her clients. She retorted that outsiders should not be bothered about how she runs the home. Apparently, a number of fa- milies are unhappy about Nta- mane, whom they claim runs the home like a ‘tuck-shop’. Matli says Ntamane bulldozes everyone that comes her way and treats them like animals:“I just want to live my last days with my children and grand- children and not be treated like an animal there. Also, I want to raise awa- reness about that place and let the people know what they will be in for if they take their loved ones there. That place is hell on earth,” concludes the emotional pen- sioner. VEREENIGING. - Police are investiga-ting a case of house robbery after a groupof men forced their way into a Duncanvillehome. The robbers pretended to be Police.Victims noticed that the suspects were

driving a vehicle that had blue lights. Thatconvinced the victims that the group werePolice.

According to a complainant’s statement, thesuspects stopped at their house and claimedto have a search warrant to search the housefor drugs.Due to the blue lights and fake warrant,

complainants allowed the `police’ into thehouse whereon it was turned upside-down.After the search the complainant realised

that a sum of money had disappeared alongwith the fake Police. The complainant claims

that R6000 went missing. Police spokesperson Captain Fiki-le Funda confirms that a case of house robbery is being in-vestigated by Police. Funda sternly warns the public neverto allow anyone into their house just because they are drivinga vehicle that sports ‘blue lights’: “It is in the public interestto protect oneself by asking questions. SEBOKENG. - An ever smiling, no-nonsenseMagistrate, Nelson Mkwentla, sentenced twomurder suspects to life imprisonment for mur-der.

He sentenced them to an additional ten yearsfor house-breaking.

The accused, PrinceMatlhong (28) andSolo-mon Mlambo (30) from Evaton, were sen-tenced in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court onFriday.

The cold-blooded murder happened in Eva-ton West at about 02:00 on March 3 of 2012.The victim, Judith Nono Sedinyana (65), andher great-grand daughter were sleeping in an-other room. Her grandson was sleeping in yetanother room. The court heard that the accus-

eds gained entranced after breaking thewindow of the house.

They came across a 65-year-old ‘gogo’sleeping with next to her great-granddaughter in a bed.

They demanded R20 000 cash and asafe. The victim pleaded with them thatshe did not have money. The heartlessthugs ignored her pleas.

The court heard that they assaulted herand then shot her in the leg. She bled pro-foundly, which caused her death.

The accused were both charged withmurder after they denied responsibilityfor being the one’s who fired the shot.

“You have to be removed from the so-ciety as you clearly pose a danger,” saidthe Magistrate.

During the ordeal, a grandson of Gogowas sleeping in another room. He was al-so assaulted severely before they tied hishands behind him. They fled with a cam-era. two cell phones, three pairs of shoesincluding a Puma ‘tekkie’.

The accused were represented by Se-foro Mosese.

Mosese told the court that hewould ap-ply for an appeal ahead of September 29.A first-born son of the deceased, RichardSedinyana, said he is pleasedwith the sen-tence. “Although we will never see ourmother, at least justice has prevailed,” hesaid.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - As the bereavedmourned their loved ones and tried to cometo terms with their loss undertakers were atloggerheads with the Emfuleni LocalMunic-ipality’s investigation team over allegedfraudulent burials.Police have opened a case of fraud against

the undertaker as he failed to produce neces-sary documents for burial on the day.Gunshots were heard, forcing people to

run for shelter.Police spokesperson Warrant Officer

Kinnie Steyn confims that a case was openedagainst a well known undertaker.Police officer at the cemetery say that the

undertaker should have buried the deceasedduring the week as per agreement with themunicipality but he decided to do so over

the weekend. Prices are not the same forweekday and weekend burials. He is allegedto be bribing caretakers at the cemetery withcash. In another fraud case an undertaker paid

for a normal size grave but approached acaretaker to bury in a casket-size grave, thesizes vary.Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni head of commu-

nication, said there are over 30 syndicatesof undertakers operating the same way. Afterthe investigation some came forward toapologise, willing to work properly. There are more than 200 graves that are

not in the system. “Very soon we will be run-ning out of space because of the illegalgraves,” said Gaba. Gaba appealed to thebereaved families to make sure that they reg-istered their graves.

The process forms part of the Gauteng Ou-ter Boundary Re-determinations finalised inOctober 2013.These included the amalgamation of the

Emfuleni Local Municipality and MidvaalLocal Municipality into one metro and the in-clusion of Lesedi LocalMunicipality into Ek-huruleni Metropolitan Municipality. This is all in the midst of Midvaal Local

Municipality’s objection against being part ofthe Vaal River City that is in the pipeline.Asked by a few ward councillors to divulgethe grounds on which Midvaal was taking thematter to court, Thupana remained vague:“Wewill continuewith the process as decidedin 2013 until such time as the court gives usa verdict. As law-abiding citizens, we will ha-ve no choice but to accept any outcome. Themerits will be determined in court,” she says.Thupana stated that the challenge by Mid-

vaal questioned the process which had beenfollowed, but she maintained that a metrowould only serve the people better.

VEREENIGING. - The mission of the Muni-cipal Demarcation Board (MDB) to turn Se-dibeng into a Category A metropolitan muni-cipality goes on.This mission saw the ward delimitation

process carried out by newMDB chairpersonJane Thupana. The event was held at the Ver-eeniging Banquet hall and took place lessthan a week following the publication of theGovernment Gazette. The event was an infor-mation-sharing process on how new wardsunder a metro would be formed. It dealt alsowith how the number of new wards and newcouncillors would be determined.

SEBOKENG.- No sooner had EmfuleniLocal Municipality (ELM) mayor GrethaHlongwane arrived at a community mee-ting (Ward 36) at theMohaladitoe Secon-dary School in Zone 10, Sebokeng onSunday she, together with her entourage, had to be escorted from the premises ascommunity members showed their dissa-tisfaction following a short address. Theaddress did not even last tenminutes. Themayor had called the meeting late on Sa-turday, apparently to discuss the munici-pality’s Integrated Development Plan(IDP). Community members said theywould not listen to Hlongwane as she hadnot been available when they needed herto address their problems. Amongst theproblems they cited was their demand fora flat rate payment on the rate and taxes,a correct billing system and a stop to wa-ter leakages that lead to the huge accumu-lation of rates and taxes. The communityhas appointed a committee to deal withthe problems as they say Ward 36 coun-cillor Maselloane Nthebe does not havetheir interests at heart. The committee has

since engaged the Public Protector on the sa-ga. “ The mayor takes us for fools. Whenwe call her to attend our meetings she doesnot, yet when she needs our participation onIDP matters she knows to come running he-re. Let her go. We are not children and wewill deal with the matter as best as we can,”said community members. While leaving the meeting the mayor

could be heard saying, “Mina angi shongonjalo” (I did not say that), perhaps with refe-rence to the rates and taxes issue.Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Nthebe says

that she has done all possible to resolve thecommunitiy’s issues but every time she hastried to do, that they seem to hit a stumblingblockwith the community, this when she de-arly wants to work with the community. “Iwant to work with the community; I havedone all that is possible to engage them butit seems that they do not understand mywork. I have included even the mayor hereto show that I am giving thismatter attentionbut the community seem not to understand,”says Nthebe adding that they are now awai-ting the Public Protector’s directive on thesaga.

SEDIBENG. - The overwhelming numberof resignations the Department of BasicEducation has had to deal with recently isalarming. Sedibeng West District 8 aloneis said to be sitting with more than 200 re-signations from teachers. Some hope tocash in before the pension fund changes be-come effective.Parents are at this stage worried about

how this is going to affect their children’supcoming exams. A Sebokeng parent says,“We are afraid resigning teachers will nolonger put in the effort they did before inteaching our children.” The Minister ofBasic Education Angie Motshekga has ap-pealed to teachers to refrain from resigningto access their pension funds:“We have noted with concern reports

that there is an increase in resignations fu-

elled by rumours that Government will ta-ke away people’s hard-earned pensions andprevent them from accessing their funds.“I want to assure teachers that this is not

the case. These rumours are based on amis-understanding of Government’s proposals. We would like to re-emphasise that Go-vernment has no intention to nationalise te-acher’s pension/provident funds or preventthem from accessing their money. I wouldurge those wanting to take this drastic stepto carefully re-consider.”Motshega adds that their money is safe

and there is no need for them to panic:“It must be emphasised that the propo-

sed pension fund reforms are just that, pro-posals, and that the National Treasury willembark on a consultation process with allstakeholders in a bid to find the best wayforward.”

ZAMDELA. - No electricity, no medica-tion for outpatients at this clinic. Outpa-tients at the Harry Gwala Clinic in areleft stranded every time the electricitygoes off. Patients said they had to waitfor hours before they received treatment.Lucky were those who come to collecttablets for high blood pressure and/orsugar diabetes. No one, including thenurses, know what happened, reportedDorah Mofokeng: “I came here earlyin the morning. Suddenly everythingwent dark,’ she said. When SedibengSter arrived at the clinic, the patientswere barking at the sun, waiting. Theysaid they waited to be called once theelectricity was back. Electricity cutshappen almost every day, patients say.“The fault is not with the nurses but withthe clinic itself,” said Mofokeng. Hersentiment was echoed by a man who re-ferred to himself only as Ben who says,

“We are tired ofwaiting here. The onlyqueue that went fast without any hiccupsis at the clinic in town.Service is fast in Sasolburg, but not

here.“Amanager at the clinic,MamoketeMatjila, who is also a professional nurse, said electricity cuts started six years ago:“We reported the matter to the region-

al Department of Health. I am sure thateven the Free State MEC for Healthshould be aware of the problem. Thedepartment has promised to deliver agenerator. The only things that are sup-posed to be kept in a fridge are medici-nes. We explained our problems to pa-tients. There’s nothing we can do tosolve the problems,” says Matjila. She said another reason for electricity

cuts is that the number of residents inHarry Gwala has increased drastically.“In the past we never experienced such

a high volume of patients,” she ex-plained.

SAVE SAVE

I have never been one to question someo-ne’s faith but the tragedy that occurred inNigeria recently makes one to stop andthink, particularly considering thatmany ofour people lost their lives and some wereleft orphaned by this tragedy.South Africans are rightfully angry at

what we see as the Nigerian governmentdragging its feet on launching an investiga-tion into the collapse, which occurredwhen

three storeys were being added to the two-sto-rey building, and for not reacting more quick-ly to help those trapped under the rubble. It’s painful to read reports that many lives

could have been saved had the pastor and hispeople allowed rescue workers to enter thepremises in time. Perhaps onewould ask: whydid the SouthAfricans have to go andworshipso far away anyway? I am not one to judgebut the things that are said to be happeningat this church are dubious, to say the least.Analysts say Nigeria’s mega-church lea-

ders are so influential that few politicians dareupset them, especially just before a national

election, which Nigeria is due to hold in fivemonths. But something needs to be done forthe families to find closure on this matter. We,the ordinary community, need to know whathappened. Is this another mystery like that ofthe disappearing airliner? The church drawsthousands of followers from all over Africaand other parts of the world, attracted by as-sertions that its leader and his “wise men” cancure almost any affliction - “casting out de-mons” they say are responsible for everythingfrom madness and HIV/AIDS to normally ir-reparable spine damage. I am not one to jud-ge. Both the South African and Nigerian go-

vernments need to get to the bottom of thisand make sure that this never happensagain. What I very much hope for is that the

South African government keeps up thepressure on the Nigerian authorities tomake thorough investigations. Although Ihave said that I am never one to judge otherpeople’s beliefs I think that our home-ba-sed churches, the Roman Catholic Church,NG and the others, still do a wonderful jobwhen one needs some sort of spiritual ful-fillment. Don’t you think?Lerato...

The Vaal University of Technology wentfull steam ahead with the Spring Gradu-ation ceremonies from 8 to 11 September2014, despite the disruptions experiencedon campus.

VUT management was determined topreserve the sanctity of this auspiciousevent and was committed to ensuring thatstudents graduate with the pride and de-corum they deserve. It was felt that stu-dents have worked tirelessly to reach thisstage in their lives and prolonging theirsuccess would have been detrimental totheir futures.

Originally scheduled to be hosted at theDesmond Tutu Great Hall at the Vander-bijlpark campus, the event was moved tothe Quest Conference Estate where, overfour days, eight graduation sessions were

held with 1392 students receiving degreesand diplomas and 11 Masters from thevarious faculties. Guest speakers, inclu-ding VIPs and council members, were in-vited to some of the sessions. For many ofour alumni, resilience and fortitude havepaved their way to success in securing toppositions in the workplace.

It was David McCullough Jr who said:“The great and curious truth of the hu-man experience is that selflessness is thebest thing you can do for yourself.” Par-ents, who have given up a lot to give theirchildren an education should be praisedfor their sacrifices and commitment.

The VUT wishes to congratulate all ourgraduates and wish them the very best forthe future.

VUT and ARNHE delegates at the Anti-Racism Colloquium

Anne Naidu

“Let us become the agents of change!” Wehear this so often, but are we willing andable to take the path that leads to changefrom within oneself? This is fast becom-ing a common question in society. Againstthis backdrop, The Anti-Racism Networkin Higher Education (ARNHE), under theauspices of the Vaal University’s SocialJustice and Transformation Unit, co-hosted a colloquia at VUT on 29 August2014 at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall.

The event, which was presided over bythe programme directors Mr Mpho Diagoand Dr Bernadette Johnson, provided anopportunity for sustained critical dialogueamongst academics, students and staffand offered a unique platform for peopleto interact on the often lesser-discussedsubject of racism.

People spoke openly about social asym-metries in topics such as xenophobia, gender, race and class so often associatedwith racism within the higher educationsector in South Africa. This event forcedus to look back to where we were and whatstrides we have made to come this far.

ARNHE, through their activities, the net-work wishes to research racism in our in-stitutions and find ways to counter it andbuild appropriate measures for buildinganti-racism practices.

Professor IreneMoutlana; our Vice-Chan-cellor and Principal, entitled her presenta-tion “Hopes are the same, but life experi-ences divide the races”. She explored issuesof how race and ethnicity have become anindelible mind-set, positioned within oureducation system and all its reform effortsthat have shaped our schooling system.

Professor Gordon Zide; our Deputy Vice-Chancellor Operations and Resources, spoke passionately about his own lifeexperiences as a child and the wonder-ful recollection of family values as com-pared to the present day and how life haschanged for us all.

Other speakers included the co-chair ofARNHE Ms Melissa Steyn (Wits), Pro-fessor Beverley Thaver (UWC), ProfessorAndre Keet (UFS) and Professor ConnieMoloi (VUT).

It was concluded that the modern-daygeneration perceive racism as socialprejudice and feel that all forms of unfairdiscrimination should be once and forall eliminated and discarded in any formor structure. These and other sentimentssuch as racial stratifications, ethnicity, dis-crimination, authoritarian personalities, displaced aggression and segregation wereechoed.

VUT HOSTS SANDF CAREERDAY AND EXHIBITION

Vaal University of Technology Coopera-tive Department is on leaps and bounda-ries to ensure students get as much ex-posure to career choices as possible. Thedepartment hosted South African Na-tional Defence Force (SANDF) CareerDay and Exhibition at Student Parking on27 August 2014. The event was in celebra-tion of women’s month and brought oneof the areas such as ‘national defence’ thatis male-dominated.

The theme of the event was ‘Education, discipline, and patriotism are tanents ofa professional soldier’. It aimed at youngwomen who are venturing into male-dominated careers. The young male coun-terparts were also not side-lined to par-ticipate as they are also the future of thecountry. The students got first-hand in-formation from speakers of SANDF whopresented various areas that encapsulatethe department and that is the SA Navy,SA Air force, SA Army and SA Military.

SANDF is in the verge of creating aware-ness and changing perception about mili-tary career opportunities. Their main tar-get is young adult men and women thatare between the ages 18-35years. The De-fence Force has already recruited 55 stu-dents in different disciplines who qualifiedor Work Integrated Learning programme.

Staff members and students could notconceal the nerves as they had the op-portunity to experience the military ma-

chines, equipment and devices on exhibi-tion site. Some said it was a daunting taskto come near the military area as they as-sociate the machinery with war, blood anddeath. Others said the experience was aneye- opener that changed their perceptionabout military as a professional field. Therest were excited that a different careerpath was brought to them. VUT couldnot be more proud of the opportunity asit benefited VUT students and learners inthe Vaal region.

This letter is directed to the former Safa andVaal Football Association (VFA) PresidentDr Molefi Oliphant:

Dear Dr Oliphant, Sedibeng football islike a terminal patient left with a few daysto live but who still thinks he has a chanceof survival.

The fact that you have ‘retired’ fromfootball doesn’t mean you’re not aware ofwhat is happening in Sedibeng as far as ad-ministration is concerned. The crisis is thatpeople who know nothing about the history

of Sedibeng, formerly the Vaal, are busy des-troying this beautiful game. The current foot-ball generation is not interested in the develop-ment of football as you were during your timeas the association president.ShootingFromTheHip appeals to you,Nta-

te Oliphant, to intervene before we lose poten-tial footballers and administrators in this regi-on.

Enough is enough and somebody must puta stop to all the nonsense happening in ourfootball. Dear Dr Oliphant, can you call a soc-cer Indaba as you did over the past 15 years?ShootingFromTheHip has tried everything

to highlight problems in our local football butit all falls on deaf ears. Local footballers fightfor positions and - with the AGM around thecorner – there are secret meeting in this regionwith some individuals campaigning for the re-gional presidency.Shooting From The Hip doesn’t remember

the last time this region had ameeting inwhichwe discussed the future of our football. Insteadmeetings focus on suspending each other.

The only time local administrators meet isduring election times or when they want todestroy certain individuals.Shooting From The Hip is quite aware that

you know exactly what transpired last yearahead of the Safa national election when DrDanny Jordaan was crowned president ofthe association.

Knives were out for some individuals inthis region, especially thosewho didn’t sup-port Dr Jordaan.

In conclusion, Ntate Oliphant, ShootingFrom The Hip will be waiting in anticipa-tion for your response in this matter.

Most people are counting on you to savefootball from these ‘ambitious’ football ad-ministrators. They take our football nowhe-re, to say the least!

An open letter to former SafaPresident Dr Oliphant
