The Sasol National Winter Swimming Championships

proved to be one of the most successful events to

date, with an all-time high of 15 records broken.

Held at the Penny Heyns Swimming Pool in Sasolburg

from 24 to 29 June 2013, swimmers from across

South Africa and neighbouring countries

participated.

Ude Fuchs from Progress Swimming Club in Polokwane, on a

winning streak, broke the record for the 50m backstroke (15

year old), with a time of 28.82. The record was previously set

by Wessel Ludick in 2008 with a time of 30.15.

Fuchs said, “To break a record is a great achievement, as

training commences at the beginning of the year for the

event. I look forward to the Sasol National Winter Swimming

Championships, as it is the first gala event of the season and

new swimming times are set.”

Tanya Pieterse swimming for Kovsies, Ethan de Wit also with

Kovsies and Cullen Thomas from Welkom Aquatics each have

two new records against their names.

Now in its 42 year, this week long event is the only national

swimming championship to be hosted in an outdoor heated

Africa is a prominent meet on the swimming calendar

and has been a starting block for many aspiring

Olympic swimmers including Ryk Neethling, Roland

Schoeman, Penny Heyns, Chad le Clos and Mandy

Loots.

Olympian and gold medalist, Ryk Neethling, who

previously competed at the event said, “The Sasol

National Winter Swimming Championships was

definitely very instrumental in my growth as a

swimmer. The competition was tough and it taught me

to focus under adversity (cold weather and long

days).”

Neethling's 1987 record for the 50m backstroke

(under 10) was almost broken by Zander Landman

who missed the record time by 0.04 seconds.

Ivor Zwane, General Manager: Public Affairs, Sasol

Sasolburg said, “Sasol believes in building great South

Africans through our many sponsorship programmes.

We believe that this event will assist with the growth

and development of some of the participants to

become South Africa's future champions”.

ORANGE FARMS. - A 13-year-old girlwas allegedly abducted and raped by a po-lice officer who is based at Ennerdale Poli-ce Station over the weekend.

According to a family member who’s na-me cannot be mentioned to protect the fa-mily and the girl’s identity, the 13-year-oldwas asked by her grandmother to go withher cousin to pay for their youth group trip. This was where the nightmare began.

On their way they were approached byan Opel Corsa that was driven by the police

officer. The officer apparently used pepper spray

on the victim, put her in the car and tookher to Kliprivier where he hid the car inthe ditch and raped the victim.

According to the police the suspect wascaught red handed by other police officerswho were passing by.

They were suspicious when they spottedthe vehicle in the ditch and went to investi-gate. The policeman was caught in the act.

The police officer has since been arre-sted and faces charges of statutory rape.

SEBOKENG.-Intelligent, loving, honestand obedient are the words Paseka Mafubeuses to describe his slain son Dichaba “Ke-ke” Mafube. Dichaba met his death recentlywhen his car was allegedly shot at by sixpolicemen in Sebokeng. The 22-year-oldNorth West University second year Accoun-ting student was allegedly chased to his de-ath by policemen after he apparently refusedto be pulled over in the early hours of themorning last Wednesday. Talking about thetragic death of his son, Paseka Mafube statesthat he feels an enormous void and that thefamily had lost an asset. “I last saw my sonon Tuesday when he was heading to see hisfriend in hospital. I knew he would then de-

tour to university. The sombre father addsthat he and his wife later received a call fromtheir son informing them that he would belate. “We were woken up by sirens outsideour house and because my wife feared thatKeke might had been involved in an acci-dent, she urged me to follow the police carswhich I did,” he says. Arriving at the scenePaseka says he recognised his son’s car, asilver Toyota tazz surrounded by police carsnext to a petrol station in Zone 14, and acloser look told him there was no longer lifein his son’s body. “My son did not pose anythreat to the police. He has driven that carto and from campus for almost two yearsnow. I would like to see justice being served.“The police are the only people that knowwhy they did what they did and they are theones that need to confess” adds an agonisedPaseka.

Dichaba’s childhood friend Mogale Mo-tau says “Keke had a lot to live for and neverdid it cross my mind that one day we would

have to bury him. It feels like just yesterdaywhen he and I were kicking the ball togetherand I will forever miss him.” According tonews reports the IPID (Independent PoliceInvestigative Directorate) are investigatinga case of murder.

I have never been a fan of an immature adultthat goes around throwing tantrums whenthings do not go their way. It makes me madto encounter such an ‘adult’ as I believe that

this behaviour is only observed when one en-counters a child.

The present situation in the Mandela fami-ly is one good example of toys raining froma cot. I mean, how do you explain the childrenand grandchildren taking each other to courtand fighting over inheritance and burial pro-cedures while the icon is still alive? This isunheard of in African culture.

There are many instances where you find

an adult in a fit of rage just because they havenot achieved their goals (some of them mi-schievous). One other example is that of poli-ticians who decide to open their own politicalparty’s just because the one they were withdecided to discipline them for their discrepan-cies or even worse - community members thatdecide to loot and burn facilities to theground. Tomorrow however they will ask thatthese facilities be rebuilt because they ‘need’

them. I believe that such ‘adults’ lack the ca-pacity to be strong enough and stand up forwhat they believe. Their thinking part of thebrain is underdeveloped and it is importantfor those who have the reasoning capacity totake their hands and show them the way orthey will forever leap into a paroxysm whenthings do not go their way, childish as theyare. Like young children they need reassuran-ce, nurturing and an understanding fromadults as they do not understand their ‘big fee-lings’ or the very tantrum that they are thro-wing. So if you are one of the above, pleasedo not despise me for not being your fan.

The pain that football administrators are cau-sing to up and coming footballers is a bitterpill to swallow. This year Sedibeng will not be represented

in the U/21 SAB Gauteng team because noplayers were selected from this region. Lastyear we had 4 players from this region in theteam but not this time around. This is very upsetting for local football be-

cause this is a once in a lifetime opportunityfor any soccer star. Shooting From The Hipis quite aware that the information about thetournament never reached the intended par-ties like it was the case last year. Why are football administrators in this re-

gion denying these youngsters the opportuni-ty to play at the highest level of football in

this country? This kind of tournament is aright platform for these boys to showcasetheir talent and maybe to catch the attentionof the national teams’ scouts. The only thing that we are good at in this

region is pulling people down with our PHDS(Pull Him Down Syndrome) styles. These youngsters have nothing to do with

your indifference. The only thing they areinterested in is to play football. As things stand now – football is dead in

this region because football administratorsarefocusing on boardroom politics. There is no one who is brave enough to

address the sorry state of football in this regi-on.There is a serious need to call a Soccer In-

daba to address some of the things that des-troy our beautiful game.Things are getting out of control and no

one seems to have the guts to take a standand stop the rot. Fear not!The question that Shooting From The Hip

is asking is: Who is to blame for this situati-on, Safa Sedibeng, Local Football Associati-on or Emfuleni Local Municipality? Please don’t accuse Shooting From The

Hip of singing praise songs for Emfuleni Lo-cal Municipality because that is not the case.

It is a bitter pillto swallow

SHARPEVILLE.- It will be a final of twoteams that doesn’t belong to football struc-tures when Italian Job FC and Monaco ex-change blows in the much anticipatedMakgothamishe Soccer Tournament seniorfinals. This much-talked-about township soc-cer tournament final is scheduled to take placeat the dusty James Soccer Grounds this com-ing Saturday. This is one final that is expected to produce

five star performances. Ironically none ofthese two teams play under any formal foot-ball structures. The‘crowd puller’ Monaco booked their

place in the final at the expenses of Try Me

Again FC whom they beat 5-3 on penalties, while Italians Job FC beat Vaal Milano FC3-2, also on penalties. It was a weekend of upset when the tourna-

ment favourites - Vaal Milano FC and CeltaVigo FC booted out of the tournament. Sed-ibeng Ster Sports and local soccer fans tippedthese two entertaining sides to go all the wayto the final but it was not to be.The tournament organiser, Lehlohonolo

Masharole believes that this is going to be anexciting final because both teams also boastwith some exciting players.“I have no doubt that this is going to be

a humdinger final taking into considerationthat both play entertaining football. I know

many people expected Vaal Milano and CeltaVigo FC to go to the final, however, footballis unpredictable. In another final, Benfica FCand Vaal Milano will meet in the u/13 finalat the same venue on the same day, whileMighty Stars and Bophelong Barcelona ex-pect to do battle in the u/15 final. It will be action packed with Mighty Stars

andWest Ham from Sebokeng clashing in theu/17 final. The games start at 10:00.

SEDIBENG.- Emfuleni Local FootballAssociation’s Promotion League teamsresume their second round fixtures at vari-ous venues over the weekend.Phillip Ndlovu says he received corre-

spondence from Safa Sedibeng League

Coordinator that all the teams must be fin-ished with their league programme in Sep-tember.Ndlovu says he will try everything in his

power to ensure that the league finishes ontime. All the Promotion League teams were in

action over the weekend but there are thosewho failed to honour their fixtures.Young Rovers FC, MBC FC and Sedibeng

Blue Jays FC are among the teams that failedto honour their league programme. Roverswas supposed to play against Sebokeng AjaxFC at Shakespeare Stadium, while Blue Jays

FC failed to show up for their fixtureagainst The Birds at Boipatong Stadium. However, Ndlovu says this is some-

thing that needs serious attention.Meanwhile, Ndlovu revealed to Sed-

ibeng Ster Sports that he considers re-signing as Emfuleni Local ExecutiveCommitteeMember following theweek-end meeting. “I have come to the pointwhere I feel that being part of that execu-tive committee is too much pain to bear.It is not as if I quit football but I willcontinue to serve football at a club level.Things are becoming too personal,” heconcludes.WEEKEND FIXTURES:Friday:VUT FC vs Sebokeng Ajax (Isak

BOIPATONG.- Taka Nkonyana hailed thisyear’s Young, Gifted and Bold Tournament, held at the Boipatong Stadium recently, as agreat success. This school netball and soccer tournament

saw Sebokeng, Boipatong and Sharpevilleschools battling it out for honours with JetNteo Secondary School and El Shaddai Se-condary School emerging as the winners. JetNteo Secondary School won the netball whileEl Shaddai Secondary School were crownedthe champions of soccer. Speaking to Sedi-beng Ster, Nkonyana says this year’s eventwas much more successful in comparison to

last year, taking into consideration that theyincluded other schools from areas such as Se-bokeng, Vanderbijlpark and Sharpeville. He says the tournament is part of mass par-

ticipation, encouraging learners to participatein sports. “I was happy with this year’s tour-nament success becausewemanaged to inviteschools from outside and this shows that thetournament is growing by lips and bounds.“I wish to thank the Department of Sports andRecreation and ABI for making this tourna-ment a success.I also wish to thank the Boipatong people

and school principals for accepting our invita-tion,” says Nkonyana.
