African Rainbow Minerals has reported afatality at the Two Rivers platinum mine, ajoint venture with Impala Platinum.

Operations were halted at the mine onSaturday to allow for the re-evaluation ofsafety procedures after an employee wasfatally injured during a fall-of-groundaccident, the company said in a statementon Monday, saying “African RainbowMinerals (“ARM”) regrets to announce thatan employee was fatally injured at the TwoRivers Platinum Mine, a joint venture withImpala Platinum Holdings Limited(“Implats”). On Saturday, 21 January 2012,an employee was fatally injured during anunfortunate fall of ground accident.Operations at the mine were subsequentlyhalted to allow for a re-evaluation of safetyprocedures. Operations are expected toresume as soon as the re-evaluation iscompleted. The Company would like toexpress its sincerest condolences to thefamily, colleagues and friends of thedeceased.”

This is the second fatality at Two Riversplatinum mine since December last year. On19 December the company announced “Theemployee was injured on Tuesday, 13December 2011 and subsequently passedaway on Thursday night, 15 December 2011as a result of injuries sustained in theincident. The Company would like toexpress its sincere condolences to thefamily, colleagues and friends of thedeceased.” The nature of the incident wasnot disclosed.

By November last year, about 112people died on South Africa’s mines, 35% ofwhich were a result of fall-of-groundaccidents, followed by trackless mobilemachinery related accidents at 16%. Thegold and platinum sectors accounted formost of the injuries and fatalities.

After last week’s heavy rains,the Fraaiuitzichtfarms, just outside Burgersfort on theLydenburg Road , was still cut off from theoutside world by Friday as the still strongflowing Spekboom river washed part of theaccess bridge away. The community, got theirbread, toilet paper and Platinum Gazette(middle photograph left) via inflatable boat. OnFriday afternoon the community, variousbusinesses and benefactors started to repairthe bridge. 65 loads of stone, rocks, sand andgravel later at about 20:30 that evening,vehicles could again drive over the bridge.Fraaiuitzicht Community say thay would like tothank Ngululu Transport, PLM Boerdery,Burgersfort Sand & Klip, Precrete, NaranjaCitrus, Modikwa Platinum Mine, EasternChrome Mines, Wildevy Manne and HF EngineRepairs for all their assistance. More than R200 000 in bursariesThe Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM)awarded bursaries worth more than R200 000for the 2012 academic year last week.The students who received the bursaries wereinvited to the Council Chamber on Friday lastweek where they were addressed by themayor, Cllr. Nkosi Mahlake and other officials.They also received letters of guarantee thatmust be submitted to tertiary institutions. GTMwill then pay the bursaries directly to theacademic institutions.Cllr. Mahlake said: “The purpose is to awardthe most deserving learners from ourmunicipality to that they can further their studiesat institutions of higher learning in the 2012academic year. We are aware that most of uscome from a poor background where we areunable to continue with our studies. As thissphere of government, we have decided to lenda hand in assisting those who are deserving tobe helped financially”.

Due to complaints in the past, the bursarieshave this year been divided to not only includefirst year students, but also those in theirsecond or third year of studies.Cllr. Mahlake assured the group that they willnot be forgotten. “We will visit eash and everystudent in the various learning institutions tocheck their progress. We are not prepared toassist learners whoare not committed intheir learning, but wewould like toencourage you towork hard so that wecan continue tosupport you financiallyin order to fulfill yourdreams”.He also expressed themunicipality’s wishthat learners study in

the fields of engineering, commerce andmedicine. “We are aware that mostprofessionals working in the mentioned fieldsin our municipality, are from other provinces.They are not here to stay,” he said.“We want you to further your studies so thatyou can come back and assist the communitiesnear Greater Tubatse in a positive way. We

want to see you occupying the highest positionsin society and that can only happen if you aredisciplined, committed and focussed on yourstudies”. Cllr. Mahlake invited the students tocome visit the municipality during their holidaysand provide them with feedback.After the official ceremony, the students hadlunch with the mayor in his boardroom.

AdvertorialBe aware of ADHD and cope with itPeople with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) have problemscontrolling attentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Adults with ADHD may havedifficulty in work and social relationships.

What is ADHD?Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition in which a person has troublepaying attention and focusing on tasks. They tend to act without thinking and hastrouble sitting still.

What causes ADHD?The exact cause is not clear, but it tends to run in the family.

Symptoms of ADHDPeople with ADHD become easily distracted, have hard time focusing on a single taskand have trouble paying attention.Children with ADHD may squirm, fidget or run around at the wrong times. Teens andadults are often restless may talk too loud, laugh too loud and become angrier that thesituation calls for. Children may not be able to wait their turn or find it difficult toshare.

When determining whether someone suffers from ADHD other tests will be conductedto rule out things such as depression, anxiety disorder or learning disabilities.

Adults with ADHD are likely to have more trouble at home and work. They have ahigher likelyhood for substance abuse and divorce rate. Fewer adults with ADHDgraduate from college or university.

TreatmentThere is no cure for ADHD, but treatment may help control the symptoms. Treatmentcan be in the form of medicine and behaviour therapy.

Myths* ADHD is caused by bad parenting. All a child needs is good discipline. ADHD is notcaused by bad parenting. But parenting techniques can often improve some symptomsand make others worse.

* Having ADHD means a person is lazy or dumb. ADHD hasnothing to do with the person’s intellectual ability. Some highlyintelligent people have ADHD.

On Friday 20 January 2012 SAPS TubatseCluster held the Junior Commissioner Projectcompetition at Batubatse Primary School Hallin Praktiseer.The learners from different Secondary Schoolswithin the cluster were took part in thecompetition. The participants were learnersfrom grade 8 up to grade 12 and they werecompeting to be the junior station commandersof their different Police stations. Thereafter thewinners for the junior station commander werecompeting to be the junior cluster commander.Four Police stations: Tubatse,Leboeng, Mecklenburg and Burgersfort tookpart except Ohrigstad as they don’t have highschools in their area. Two personnel from theDepartment of Education, L.S Sekhukhuneand M.A Lesufi together with the stationcommander of SAPS Burgersfort Lt Col

Mosena were the adjudicators for the event.All the learners who took part were awardedcertificates and the winners for the juniorcluster posts were awarded medals andtrophies. The winner for the Junior ClusterCommander competed for the JuniorProvincial Commissioner’s post in Polokwaneon 24 January 2012. The Junior ClusterCommander was Thabang Mabelane fromMmiditsi Secondary School. From Tubatse withJunior Station Commander was Karabo Molapofrom Mmiditsi Secondary School. FromBurgersfort it was Tempest Sekhukhune fromCalvin College. From Mecklenburg it wasLebogang Mmadisa from Moroke SecondarySchool. From Leboeng it was Mahlatse Magabaof Maokeng Secondary School. TraceyPhaahla was appointed a Junior Cluster VispolCommander. She is from

KgahlanongSecondary School. Lilian Makgoowas appointed Junior Cluster DetectiveCommander. She is from PhafaneSecondarySchool. Lerato Manzini from KgaolaSecondarySchool was appointed Junior Cluster SupportCommander.In the absence of the Cluster CommanderBrigadier Ledwaba, all the stations wererepresented by the Acting Station Commanderof Tubatse SAPS Lt Col Mahlaola, Stationcommander of Burgersfort SAPS Lt ColMosena, the acting station Commander ofMecklenburg SAPS Lt Col Thiba and thestation commander of Leboeng SAPS CaptMoholane. Theproject features among the leadership projectsintended to be implemented in future such asJunior Principal, Junior Bank Manager, JuniorMayor, Junior HOD, Junior CEO, JuniorMunicipal Manager, Junior Premier etc.The junior station commanders, junior clustercommanders, junior provincial commanders,and the junior national commissioners will beselected. No books for schoolsSchools started, but no text books to use. Thiswas the situation at most schools in the areathis week.Especially the grade R - 3 classes are affectedas they were due to start a new learning planthis year. Teachers went on courses to gettraining for the plan, but are now left withoutbooks to use.The books had been ordered well in advanceduring 2011 and were supposed to be deliveredearly December before the schools closed.Should schools chose to buy the booksprivately, they will have to spend on averageR50 000 to equip average size classes

between grade R and grade 3.One of the plans offered by the Department ofEducation was that teachers use the outline ofwhat they learned in their training and gathertheir own information from sources like booksand the internet. Some schools bought a singleset of books and now photocopy the lessonsfor the learners.This is however not a solution for all the schoolsas many do not have the resources tophotocopy the books. This means that learninghas not started for many youngsters this year.In the meantime products such as glue stickswere delivered to some schools. These are ofsuch an inferiour quality that schools aredumping it as soon as it arrives. Glue sticksare dry and unusable. Pencils are broken andbreak as far as they are being sharpened whilepens are dry from the start. By the time of goingto print yesterday morning, the schools had noindication as to when they will be receiving thenew textbooks.

Over-regulation ofbusiness was for the first time rated higher thana lack of skilled people. State of the(broken) artNormally one rushes past the state of the artfire station in Burgersfort on the way toOhrigstad. After seeing water streamingfrom the reservoir on the premises, PlatinumGazette made the effort and drove past thispublic asset run by the Sekhukhune DistrictMunicipality. Reaction: Oh no!. Not only iswater streaming from the reservoir (and wasstill streaming from it late in the afternoonwhen the reporter returned from Phiring), theterrain is certainly not a rose garden, but thegeneral impression was that of disrepair. Fewvehicles were on the terrain, so presumablythey are still in tip top condition?

New teachers

Mr Lekwadu, Burgersfort’sTraffic Chief, is corcernedabout road users drivingrecklessly at the roundabouton top of the hill in the roadto the Geater TubatseMunicipality’s offices. MrLekwadu says vehicles stormup the hill from both sides(not adhering to the 30 km/hspeed limit) and do not yieldat the circle. He explainedthat vehicles shouldapproach the circle carefullyand yield to the right if thereis oncoming traffic (thatmeans stop - editor).
