At the time of going to press yesterdaymorning (Thursday) Platinum Gazette stillreceived telephone calls with peoplereporting damage caused by the heavy rainsof Tuesday and Wednesday.

Heavy rains have caused havoc locallyand in other areas of Limpopo causing majordams and rivers to overflow. The ProvincialDisaster Management Centre says rains, caused by Cyclone Dando, which fell withinthe areas of Maruleng and Ba-Palaborwa,resulted in some communities in areas likeFinale being cut-off as a result ofinaccessible roads. Locally somecommunities was also cut off from theoutside world just before the newspaperwent to press, notably in the areas of Phiringon the road to Blydepoort and also atFraaiuitzicht just outside Burgersfort (theGethlane Lodge area).

The Hoedspuit area is the most affectedwith up to 380 millimeters of rain havingbeen measured. The Blyde Dam isoverflowing by 111 percent and KlaserieDam by 108 percent. The Olifants and BlydeRiver reported flows of 3118.43 and 688cubic metres per second, respectivelyyesterday and the Maruleng MunicipalOffices have also been flooded.

The Mopani District Management Centreestablished a joint operational team atHoedspruit with all relevant role players tocoordinate all activities. The MEC forCoGHSTA, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, aspolitical head of the Provincial DisasterManagement Centre, called upon all thepeople of Limpopo to be vigilant and takeextra caution. “The Provincial DisasterManagement Centre is ready to handle anyeventuality,” he said. He said people shouldremember that they can report disasterincidents to their district offices orprovincial disaster management centreon the toll free number 0800 222 111.

The Provincial Disaster ManagementCentre is continuing with the assessment ofthe damage. Locally the major towns wereeerily quiet as the rain relentlessly camedown. Few vehicles were moving inOhrigstad and Steelpoort, while the taxiranks in Burgersfort remained very quiet as

people could not access the towns from thevillages. Not only did the retail economy tooka knock, the roads also started to deterioratealmost as rapidly as the rain came downwith massive potholes appearingeverywhere within hours.

For some learners their first day atschool simply did not realise, while farmersall over the area watched as losses grew bythe minute. The Chairman of theWatervalsrivier Boerevereniging’sManagement Committee, Mr Lodewyk deJager, told the newspaper about 200 mm ofrain fell in 12 hours in the Burgersfort area. The Waterfalls River flooded heavily andflows into the Spekboom River which burstits banks because of the rain and the factthat sluices af the Lydenburg Dam wereopened to safeguard the dam. As a resultpeople at Fraaiuitzicht could still not bereached by Thursday morning. Twodamwalls broke, irrigation channels brokeand one farmer lost 30 head of cattle in theraging Spekboom.

Mr de Jager says irrigation pumps wereflooded and that farmers will suffer lossesbecause beans sowed just before the rainwill not grow because of too much water. The danger also exist that citrus trees maydrown if the wet soil does not drain fastenough, while a bad crop for early citruscultivars may be expected. Mr de Jagerreckons this is a 30 year flood, adding thatalthough damage is suffered, farmers arethankful for the rain.

The Chairman of OhrigstadBoerevereniging, Mr Cor Cross, says 200mm in 24 hour was measured in theOhrigstad area with much damage reportedto irrigation systems and channels. He alsolamented that the young citrus trees maydrown and stated that the flooding ofcropfields made farming very difficult.Platinum Gazette also photographed a damwall bursting (page 1) near Ohrigstad andcould not reach some of the villagesbecause of flooding by streams and rivers.

By Wednesday afternoon when the rainsubsided in Burgersfort, people flocked tothe bridges around town to view therepective rivers in flood.

Disaster Managementhave their hands full

AdvertorialDrug abuse in school childrenDrug and alcohol use by teens is not something to be taken lightly. More teens are intreatment for marijuana (dagga) dependence than for all other illicit drugs combined. A1998 study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that if ateen starts to drink at 15, he or she has a 40% chance of alcoholism or alcoholdependence as an adult.

What are the effects?Marijuana affects alertness, concentration, perception, co-ordination and reaction time.Regular use of marijuana leads to some changes in the brain that are similar to thosecaused by cocaine, heroin or alcohol. Most adults acknowledge that drug experimentation by teens is risky and can lead toserious trouble. But some say “it’s only dagga,” or “it’s only alcohol,” or “it’s a rite ofpassage.” Not anymore. The world has changed, and so have the drugs. Kids are usingdrugs and alcohol at a much younger age, when their bodies and brains are stilldeveloping and more vulnerable to their effects. Drug and alcohol use can lead tomany negative consequences, including bad grades, broken friendships, familyproblems, physical injuries and trouble with the law.

Substance use can change the direction of a young person’s life — physically, emotionally and behaviorally. It can weaken the ability to concentrate and retaininformation during a teen’s peak learning years and it can impair judgment, leading torisky decision-making. “Experimentation,” even with dagga, can also lead to addiction. Not everyone progresses from use to abuse to addiction.

How can you tell if your child is using drugs? It is difficult because changes in mood or attitudes, unusual temper outbursts, changesin sleeping habits, changes in hobbies or other interests are common in teens. Thesechanges often signal that something troubling is going on and may involve alcohol ordrugs.

Negative changes in schoolwork; missing school or declining grades, increased secrecyabout possessions or activities. Use of incense, room deodorant or perfume to hidesmoke or chemical odors. Subtle changes in conversations with friends, e.g., moresecretive, using “coded” language. New friends, Change in clothing choices — newfascination with clothes that highlight drug use. Increase in borrowing money, evidenceof drug paraphernalia, such as pipes, rolling papers.

Blood-shot eyes or dilated pupils. New use of mouthwash or breathmints to cover-up the smell of alcohol. Missing prescription drugs— especially narcotics.
