The private sector in Limpopo provinceresponded well to the challenge posed bythe provincial government to partner itduring the 2012 Easter holidays.

The theme for the 2012 Easter ArriveAlive Campaign was “Don’t Be CountedAmongst the Dead”. Two Rivers PlatinumMine has heeded the clarion call to joingovernment, in its commitment to make avaluable transformation towards saferroads in South Africa by partnering theLimpopo Department of Road and PublicTransport during its Arrive AliveCampaign. Although Limpopo provinceregistered the third highest road fatalitiesin the country during this Easter holidays, the fatality number remained the same asin 2011 with 32 fatalities. Majorcontributory factors included speeds toohigh for spesific conditions, dangerousovertaking, fatigue, drinking and driving orwalking and tyre failure.

The UN has declared 2011 -2020 ADecade of Action for Road Safety. TheSouth African government has adoptedthe campaign and subsequentlyrequested all stakeholders to support theinitiative with the aim of reducing the highrate fatalities on our roads. It took theresources and efforts from both theprivate sector to mitigate the potentialhigh number of deaths on the SouthAfrican roads during the 2012 Easterholidays traffic rush. Two Rivers Platinummine embarked on an initiative to supportgovernment efforts well before the Easterholidays by initiating internal awarenesscampaigns, repairing life threateningpotholes and maintaining theSekhukhune Road (R577) as well as theStoffberg – Burgersfort road (R555). “Thisflows from our principle values ZeroTolerance to injuries at the mine. Besidesbeing used by our employees, customersand families, we also believe that wellmaintained roads are safer roads andthey attract investors and tourist andultimately contribute towards regionaleconomic growth.

As a Good Corporate Citizen, this isTwo Rivers Platinum’s contribution to theprovince’s economic growth plan” said

Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader atTwo Rivers Platinum.

Their partnership with the LimpopoRoads, Transport and Public Works duringthe 2012 Easter Arrive Alive CampaignLaunch was no surprise. The first phase oftheir partnership started a few weeksearlier focussing on the R555, betweenBurgersfort and Steelpoort Park wherereflector bands for cattle were distributed. This intervention was aimed at curbing thefatalities caused by crashes as a result ofstray animals on the roads, especiallyduring the night. Over 1,500 reflectorbands were distributed to over 10 cattlefarmers staying closer to the main roadconnecting the mines and the surroundingcommunities and the farmers wereeducated on the dangers of stray animalsalong the roads as well as the costs to theeconomy.

The national preliminary figuresindicate a reduction in road deaths duringthis past Easter week-end. Traffic volumesalong major arterial routes were thehighest this Easter, peaking in excess of2,500 vehicles per hour. During Easter2011, 296 people were killed in 215 roadcrashes. “In this regard, we would like tocompliment all role players involved inmaking sure that our road users ArrivedAlive to their various destinations and totheir loved ones. We take this opportunityto challenge and invite road users tocontinue behaving and in sharing the roadwith others. We also invite the othermining companies within the province, tojoin hands with Two Rivers Platinum bycontributing towards road maintenanceand sustain the initiatives started by TwoRivers and the Department of Roads andPublic Transport beyond the Easterperiod”, said Francois Vermeulen of TwoRivers Platinum and also a member ofrecently established Southern Cluster’sJoint Technical Task Team (JTTT) onRoads.During Easter this year (2012), asper preliminary statistics supplied by theSAPS to the Road Traffic ManagementCorporation, 181 crashes were reportedfrom Thursday (5 April) to Monday (9April).

The Department of Health & Social Development inLimpopo would like to warn all suppliers within thedepartmental database at all the dpartment’s institutionsacross the province of fraudulent official purchasingorders.

This was brought to the attention of the departmentafter several companies complained that the department isfailing to pay them for services rendered. All companieswho complained indicated to have allegedly received callsfrom an official by the name of Mr Rapetsoa who isattached to the Department of Health & SocialDevelopment in office B30. The allegations state that theofficial approaches the companies inviting them to bid forthe supply of adult diapers and various goods at variousdepartmental institutions.

Once the companies have sent through theirquotations, the official will ask for a fax number that he willthen use to send the fraudulent official purchase order. After having faxed the fraudulent official purchase order, itis alleged that the official will then advise the awardedcompany to approach another company which is allegedto have a standing contract with the department as asupplier and can help fast track the supply since the goodsare in urgent need.

The said company will then upon verbal agreementrequest the supplier to deposit half of the quoted amountbefore it delivers the goods to the institution as per thefraudulent official purchasing order.

Thus far the department received 12 fraudulent officialpurchase orders which the suppliers claim to havedeposited the requested amounts of money.

The Department of Health & Social Developmentdistances itself from this practice and advises all suppliersnot to render services telephonically, without having theoriginal purchasing order and personally verifying with thedepartment.

Samancor ECM assists the CivilSociety Development Initiative

Civil Society Development Initiative (CSDI), is situatedat Riba Cross Village. Samancor Eastern ChromeMines, took the initiatives to get involved with thisproject by assisting them with some maintenanceproblems on their buildings.Samancor ECM in partnership with OSC did therenovation of the building which included the paintingof walls, fixing and painting of ceilings, and the repairson the ablution facilities. The renovation was of ECM’s commitment to carefor the community and to ensure that vulnerablechildren and poor families get proper care and supportservices in a healthy and safe building. The managerof the CSDI Mrs N.R Maphanga expressed hergratitude to the Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines.

Samancor ECM caresabout road safety

‘“ECM Cares” is one of our Values that each andevery Samancor Chrome employee draws close toheart. The connecting road between Steelpoort andthe Polokwane/Burgersfort Road have beennotoriously known for high numbers of accidents andnear misses as it had no road marking lines assistingin governing road users. ECM recently helped toaddress this problem.“Caring from a mining point of view entails that wecare for those whom we employ and those who areaffected by our operations in the area. Thisresponsibility for our actions and our actions affectingthose around us also is strongly embedded in theemployee duties in terms of the Mine Health andSafety Act. Further in current day mining safetyawareness, the Department of Mineral Resourcesrequires mining license holders to assist in safetyawareness and safety improvement of not only themine worker but also the person in the vicinity of themine, including road users in that area” the minemanagement says. The painting of the road was done in closecooperation with the Limpopo Department of Roadsand Transport (DRT). They participated in the

meetings with the contractor to ensure that the plans, specifications, implementation plan and safetymeasures for affected road users were in line with theDRT Specifications. The guidance and verification ofthe DRT was evident not only in the negotiations, butthey were on site throughout to ensure that theindicated process, quality and accuracy of themarkings were to the legislative standards. In an effortto ensure that road safety is tangible and to improvethe safety conditions of road users, SamancorChrome ECM have a system in place to replace orrepair damaged road signs and also have startedclearing overgrowth on dangerous turns and bends toincrease visibility. Ensuring that the road markings and required safetysigns remains to standard, is only the first step inincreasing the safety of road users on this road. Themost important safety initiative is to get road users tocomply with set legislative standards and adhere tothe rules of the road. With Samancor Chrome takingresponsibility to maintain the physical conditions ofthis road, road users are urged to be accountable fortheir actions on the road ensuring that their actions donot endanger the lives of other road users.

Schools benefit from SamancorECM Golf Day

On 11 November 2011, ECM hosted a golfday to raise funds for the community projectsand to thank all the companies who made acontribution towards these projects and tointernal projects. An amount of R26 500 was raised. With thismoney “Back to school” starter packs werepurchased, and distributed amongst fourschools. Makgakantshe Primary, MangabanePrimary, Steelpoort Academy and DithamagaPrimary were the recipients of these packs.

At Samancor ECM we aim to keep ourvillages in a pristine condition. In 2010 welaunched a garden competition in all ourvillages. As part of this campaign, EasternChrome Mines handed out shovels inMangabane village. We believe that this will assist the employeesin keeping their gardens neat, ensuring thatthey can be proud of where they are staying.

Me.

Mr Keith Henriques sê: “How can we goover proudly when we do ‘lay-buys’ fromthe Chinese? How can you give 100% ifyou are not supported by South Africa100%? Again we are disgraced. We arealways getting handouts from othercountires. What flag will we wave at theOlympics? For me personally beingProudly South African is like a Vodacomvoucher. If you buy R29, that is exactlywhat get. There is no bonus. You knowthey should have taken the bonus of fouror five high up people and they couldhave bought all the athletes clothes!”

Mr Amos Mabuza and Mr Aubrey Mokwena said: “Some of the Chinese havebusinesses in South Africa - that makes them Proudly South African. Government gavethem a platform to do business in South Africa and the sponsorship of the athletes’clothing means that company is ploughing back to South Africa. When we talk aboutbeing proud of South Africa we mean people from all over Africa and we are proud ofpeople from Africa”.

Mnr Tiaan Buitendag en me. Nicolene Buitendag sê: “Ons sal ons atlete regdeurondersteun. Maatskappye moet meer deelneem aan Proudly South African. Dit is goeiepublisiteit vir Suid Afrika”. By hulle is Tersia-Ann.

Ms Mapule Makuwa and Ms Thelma Nodwele said: “The athletes will advertise China intheir clothes. To us being Proudly South African means that we support local peopleand businesses. Even if you bring the material from China, it must be manufactured inSouth Africa. We need to boost our economy. Local companies must also be moreinvolved in this drive”.

Mnr. André Lombard sê: “Vir my gaan diteintlik net oor die atlete en dat ‘n mens ophulle moet trots wees. Klere maak nie diespan nie - ‘n mens kry dan deesdae pienkBulle ook!”

Mr James Segoapa said: “They must uselocal people and companies forsponsorships. They can still be ProudlySouth African at the Olympics becauseChina is investing a lot in South Africaand we can be proud of our athletes”.

Mr Peter Matura said: “African leaders arecomplaining about Westernisation, butnow they are taking in the Chinese. It isAsianisation. I don’t see the difference. The Chinese reap resources. The clothingsponsorship at the Olypmics could havebeen a way to show the world what SouthAfrica could do - showcasing to theworld”. With him is Chido Matura.

Me Comfort Mohlala sê: “Hoe kan hulleProudly South African wees as hulle ietsvan die China dra? Proudly South Africanbeteken om te lead by example”.

Mr Eddy Matshebele said: “The organisersdid not do their job good enough. Nowthey are killing job creation. If theysupported the locals and got a localsponsorship, they create jobs for ourbrothers and sisters. If we are buyingimported goods we are creating jobs inother countries”.

Mr Kgaogelo Motau said: “We aresupposed to support South Africa firstand then China. SA companies shouldhave taken the opportunity to supportlocal athletes. Personally I don’t worrymuch about being Proudlly South Africanwhen I buy things”.

Later this year South African athletes willrepresent our country at the Olympic Gamesin London. They will however be dressed forthe occasion by Erke, a company from China, who signed a sponsorship deal with the SouthAfrican Sporting Confederation and OlympicCommittee (Sascoc). According to Sascocthere were no willing sponsors within SouthAfrica and that is why they went for the ChineseCompany’s offer. They’ve signed a deal thatwill included sponsorship for the athletes untilthe 2016 Olympics in Brazil. The Proudly South African drive was verynegative about the decision to use Chineseproduced sportswear for the athletes saying itis an insult to attempts from local companiesproducing similar goods. We asked readers what they think about thisissue and what they feel being Proudly SouthAfrican means to them.

Proudly South African: what does it mean?Chinese sponsored clothes - can they still be Proudly South African at the Olympics?

Then dramastruck when race officials hit van Staden/Lawrenson and the Sullwalds with penaltiesfor deviating from the route on the first of two175 kilometre loops that made up the race. That l ifted the Alberts father and soncombination into first place ahead of brothersLaurence and Gerhard du Plessis (ZarcoMagnum) with vanStaden/Lawrensonslipping to third place. The Sullwalds wererelegated to fifthplace behind formerSA champion EvanHutchison and DanieStassen in theMotorite BAT Venom. The Sullwalds thenprotested against afive minute penalty.Their protest wasupheld by thestewards of themeeting and theywent to the top of theleaderboard ahead ofthe Alberts and duPlessis teams.A yo-yo ride up anddown the leaderboardcontinued for van Staden and Lawrenson andthey found themselves dropping to fourth placeahead of Hutchison and Stassen. The results, however, are under notice of appeal and atthis stage are provisional. The final scoring saw the Sullwalds finishnearly two seconds ahead of the Albertspairing who finished a scant three secondsahead of the du Plessis brothers. The brothersalso benefited from scoring changes andprofited from a 20 second credit when theywere held up by spectator traffic at a controlpoint.“It was a brilliant race,” said Sullwald seniorafter all the drama. “It was a real off road routeand a slipping clutch was our only concern.”KwaZulu-Natal crew Clint Gibson and GaryCampbell (Gibson Racing Porter) were alsopenalised for a route deviation, but had enoughtime in hand to hold onto sixth place ahead ofMark Corbett and Julien Hardy in the CenturyRacing CR4. The final gap between the twocars was a slim 22 seconds.Corbett and Hardy came in ahead of CenturyRacing team-mates Colin Matthews and AlanSmith, in the CR3, who took the Class Phonours. For Matthews and Smith it was theirsecond successive Class P win, and givesthem an early hold on the championship.Among the high profile casualties were two-time SA champions Quintin and KallieSullwald, in the Elegant Fuel BAT, andSizanani Jimco pair Steve Parker and VZ vanZyl. The Sullwalds found themselves strandedin a mud hole while a string of punctures ledto a “bad day at the office” for Parker and vanZyl.It was also a tough day for a number of ClassP competitors. Brothers Keith and AndrewMakenete (Zarco), the father and daughter pairof Coetzee and Sandra Labuscagne(Raysonics Zarco) and Nic Goslar and AndrewMassey (Men’s health International Zarco) allfell by the wayside. The next event on the championship calendaris the Atlas Copco Timbertrack 400 inRichmond, in KwaZulu-Natal, on May 18 and19.
