my ViewSharon Westerholm, EO January was another

busy month for projects at the LRBA office. We had a great turnout with a full vendor room again, for our Electrical EXPO. A big thanks to Mike Eidenschink for all his work on this Expo.

Hopefully next year other electricians will help

on this project, so Mike doesn’t need to do all the leg work himself. This year we added 2 days of Power Limited classes which was not well attended. I am not sure if it is that a lot of technicians, working on HVAC that need to be licensed, are not licensed or if there were classes available elsewhere.

We are working on the BUILDERS EXPO in Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes. Responses for these have been quite slow, even with several mailers going out. We are working on the Builders Show, adding the Sports Show in the South arena. All of the big booths have been sold, and 5 single booths have been requested. If you haven’t booked your booth yet, there are openings but book as soon as possible.

The Department of Labor has changed many things as far as setting up classes, but for the builders they have added a QB#, which is a needed item to be used for applying for this licensing term. We have an awesome class too, with Russell Thornberg, from Rochester, as instructor. He is doing a class on Roof to Soil, which will also go into building codes.

Another project, this past month, was a crooked playhouse, built by some LRBA members. The Boys and Girls Club will be selling raffle chances on this. The playhouse turned out really well. I have pictures and information in another article.

Our Annual Meeting and Christmas Party was a fun night too. If you missed it, you missed a great time!

Our web master’s computer crashed recently and she is missing some of the website corrections that I submitted. I suggest everyone go to the website, www.lakeregionbuilders.com and check to make sure your listing is correct and if there is any additions or corrections.

I hope our members are getting busy with bidding and things are starting to look up. Till next month!

What? Is It Really January?I hope you had a fantastic holiday sea-

son and you’re enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. I kinda like it! Here at BAM we’re busy getting ready for the 2012 Leg-islative Session which starts January 24th.This year’s session promises to be short, so we will be moving fast to push our issues through and oppose unreasonable legisla-tion.

Of course many of you also know we are in the middle of adopting a new residential code. At least Karen Linner, BAM Director of Codes and Research and her able team of members from all over the state are. They have put many hours in already. Keep your feedback coming on our short and sweet is-sue surveys. Your input really does make a difference.

And of course, we will be calling on you to get involved by contacting your legisla-tors when the time comes. If you haven’t already, send us your email and home ad-dress so we can connect you quickly to your legislators with VoterVoice.

A New Year Means a New BAM President

I want to welcome Keith Kylmala as the 2012 BAM President. He has been on the BAM Executive Committee for the last 4 years and was former President of the Ar-rowhead Builders Association in Duluth. I know he will do a great job.

Before becoming our President, he served a few years in the trenches, and last year Keith was our Government Relations Chair. As President this year he will be giv-ing out a new BAM Advocacy Award at our Convention in February. This new award will seek to recognize the outstanding con-tributions of a member or group of mem-bers to forwarding our advocacy agenda. I am looking forward to Keith’s selection. We had many members contribute to our suc-cess last year.

BAM Staff Attends ICC Local Chapter Meeting

We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet the International Code Council’s (ICC) CEO, Rick Weiland. Rick was in town this past week and as a member of the lo-cal ICC chapter, BAM attended the meeting Thursday morning to hear what he had to say.

The ICC conducted a membership sur-vey last September and Weiland reported there is “churning” within the association about involving more interests in the code process.

Weiland also introduced ICC’s gov-ernment relations manager for the upper Midwest, Rick Hauffe who has been with ICC since April of last year and has visited with a few of the local associations so far. We learned Hauffe plans to be at the Min-nesota State Capitol during the 2012 ses-sion and look forward to seeing him on the Hill.

New Ideas for the New YearAudrey Thomas is an author, speaker

and productivity expert but we have our own staff expert Katherine Nielsen. Kath-erine wanted to pass along a few of the tips that she picked up from Audrey and other experts to get it all done by getting (and staying) organized and focused on what’s most important. Here are a few ideas to get you started in the New Year:

• Devote 10 minutes a day to clean-ing out your email inbox. Use a timer if needed.

• Set up appropriate folders within your email management system to keep important information sorted.

• Grab 3 inches of papers off your desk; sort and purge and then file away those that need to be kept.

• Clean up the sticky notes stuck around the perimeter of your computer screen. After a while these just become clutter and you tune them out. If they rep-resent a task, add it to your To Do List and pitch the sticky note.

• Review tomorrow’s calendar ap-pointments. Are you prepared for each meeting on your schedule? Take time now to set aside materials, notes and other in-formation you may be required to bring with you. Commit to being there 3-4 min-utes early.

According to Thomas, so much of the clutter in our world represents delayed decisions. Each email that comes to your inbox and every piece of paper that comes to you at work and at home requires a deci-sion to be made about it. BAM past Presi-dent Jim Gander was really good at this as well. I learned a thing or two from him as well.

Every time you make a decision about what to do with something you will be one step closer to being organized and having less stress.

To find more ideas from “Organized Audrey” check out some of her past articles here.

Convention Registration Now Open

Governor Announces JOB’s bill for 2012

On Wednesday this week, Governor Dayton announced he was introducing a jobs bills that would include a series of components such as targeted tax credits, a $750 million bonding bill and a sales tax for Internet sales. A component that may be of interest to the residential construc-tion industry is a $3,000 tax credit. Under that plan, Minnesota businesses of all sizes could receive a $3,000 tax credit for each Minnesotan hired in 2012, assuming those hires come from one of three categories. The first category would those who are un-employed. The second would be veterans, and the third very recent tech school and/or college graduates. The credit would be lowered to $1,500 for every hire made in 2013. This $35 million program, the gov-ernor said, would create 10,000 private-sector jobs. BAM will be keeping a close watch on how the details of this program play out when session begins on Tuesday, January 24.

2012 Building ForecastNAHB presented a “Building in 2012”

webinar on Wednesday regarding predic-tions on economics and advocacy. Present-ers included Neil Newhouse, Partner and Co-founder of Public Opinion Strategies, Celinda Lake, President of Lake Research Partners, along with Jim Tobin, Senior VP for Government Affairs at NAHB and Da-vid Crowe, Chief Economist for NAHB.

A survey was conducted of 1500 vot-ers from across the country on homeown-ership, the housing market, and home ownership policies/proposals. The results revealed that Americans want to own a home because they believe it’s a good place to raise a family and that it creates strong communities. In terms of policy proposals, the survey results showed there is broad, bipartisan support for policy that encour-ages homeownership. NAHB will be pursu-ing policies to keep the mortgage interest deduction and preserve a federal role for housing financing such as 30-year fixed rate mortgages.

The LRBA will continue the popular “Member Showcase” each month. In the past, the Member Showcase was random. This year, the Member Showcase will be randomly drawn each month within the entire member-ship. If your business has been chosen, the LRBA staff will notify you and give you the opportunity to have a FREE full page feature done on your business. We can work with you to create the feature page, create the page for you, or allow your business to submit your creativity to us! This is a great opportunity to let the membership get to know your company, and the LRBA newsletter has a large audience...this is great FREE MARKETING!! We will start this with the March edition as time was short for the February edition of the newsletter. We will draw from the membership starting the first week of February to allow time for informa-tion gathering.

MEMBER SHOWCASE: NEW for 2012...

Bryan Schoenberger receives check for $500.00

Due to fewer people advertis-ing in the newsletter, we will

be going to have the newsletter available on our website. It already is there each month, as well as past issues. I have a short list of those that need to have it mailed to them. If you would like to continue to have a hard copy, please let me know. We are cur-rently losing about $1200 a year, so we need to make some changes. We will still continue to put copies at all the lumber yards.

ARE YOU DOING BUSINESS WITH MEMBERS?In the tough economy that we are in, it is more important than ever, to use the services of our members. Our associates

help keep the association going, with their membership, their volunteering on our projects, the Home Show and other events. Likewise for the associates, if they need the use of a contractor or can recommend a contractor, it is important for them to use one of our fellow members. If you are using services from non-members, encourage them to become a member of our association. This benefits everyone!!!

JACKPOT DRAWING WINNERS WILL BE LISTED MONTHLY

MIDWEST BANK AND THE BUILDERS GROUPYou must attend the meetings in order to be eligible. Every month-ly meeting, except March, (No meeting in the Home Show month) we will draw for $40.00. Initially, every name goes in a pot. Each meeting you attend will add another slip, with your name, in the pot. You must be there to win. Our sponsors for the monthly drawing are The Builders Group and Midwest Bank. Our meet-ings are a great place to network, talk to your friends, and most of all, learn about things that affect your business and now you have the opportunity to win some money too! Should the name drawn not be there, the $40.00 gets put in the next month’s pot; you then would have a chance at a larger jackpot amount.

We will still continue to put copies at all the lumber yards.

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EO January was another

busy month for projects at the LRBA office.

February is here and we’re a little closer to warmer and longer days! We recently attended the annual banquet. There was good company as well as a nice dinner and some fun entertainment. New board members were sworn in and it looks like I will be on as president one more year! So far it has been an honor and priv-ilege and I look forward to serving the Association again in 2012.

This month I have a couple of questions for you the readers… 1. Why are you a member of the Home Builders Association? 2. What was it you were ex-pecting to gain when you joined? 3. How would you and your business be affected if there was no Build-ers Association? Please take a moment and reflect on these questions, and then write down your thoughts and e-mail me. DO IT!!! Seriously! I need for all of you to participate in this exercise! It doesn’t have to be long, unless of course you want it to be. A simple sentence or two for each question will suffice. I will be looking forward to your replies. You can e-mail me at [email protected]
