It is the month of anksgiving. I would like to give some focus to our Builders Asso- ciation on all levels. I am thankful for the NAHB for challenging the EPA on the new lead laws as well as heading up a campaign to save our home mortgage tax deduction. I am thankful for BAM and all their efforts in fighting the fire sprinkler law. I am also thankful for Pam Perri and her office for the endless hours they put in lobbying for our industry. I am especially thank- ful for the LRBA and Sharon Westerholm. Acting as President I have had a unique opportunity to get to know Sharon and all of what she does for the LRBA. It has become more clear and evident to me than ever, that Sharon has a very strong passion for our Association, as well as, our industry. ere is no doubt in my mind that she gives way more of herself than what she is compensated for. We are very, very fortunate to have her as our EO. So my question to you… what can we do to thank her? My answer, bring in more members!! I believe the best compliment we can give her is to help her grow our Association and secure its future. At the very least, make sure to drop Sharon a note, give her a call, or just simply catch her in the office and give her a huge thank you for all that she does for us. is month our general meeting is in Perham with Dave Neisen speaking. my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOHappy Thanksgiving!!!!! It is

coming fast. Be sure and mark your schedule for the November meeting, on the 17th at Mulli-gan’s. David Neisen, the City of Detroit Lakes building inspector, is on deck for our speaker.

Dinner is on your own but I will send an email and will call to make sure you don’t forget. Bring a new

member in so you get a chance on winning $50.00 that night in a drawing. You will need an application and a check for the membership. It also puts you in our draw-ing and the BAM drawing.

I am working on the brochure for the Home, Garden and Sports Show. That’s right. Sports Show. One arena will be designated for sports and rec and the old arena will be Home Show. The traffic forthe show should in-crease quite a bit. I sent out a feeler letter to prospects and received 7 answers back that said it sounded very good. We have added quite a few new names to our list and will be sending them the vendor brochure. To make sure you get your desired spot, get your stuff in right away, as when spaces for the show are sold out, there will not be anymore available. We will have Al Clark and Perry Nodsle as Co-Chairs of the Home Show this year. Please volunteer to work at the Ask a Contractor booth, set-up and tear down.

We will also need people to work at the front desk collecting money. Contact Linda Jutz if you would like to help with that - 218-334-5692. The Silent Auction will be in the front of the Sports Show arena. I am ex-cited to be expanding on the Show but keeping the main focus on the Home Show.

Check the Calendar of Events on page 5 and put dates on your calendars. If there are members that have not brought your business cards in to the office, either drop some off or mail them to me. Prospective clients do pick them up.

SEE YOU ON THE 17th.Sharon

2012 session preparation beginsThe 2012 Minnesota Legislative Session is

schedule to be only 10 weeks long with a start date of Tuesday January 24. It was announced there will likely be a $1 billion deficit for Min-nesota in 2012 due to slower than projected economic growth for the legislature and gov-ernor to overcome. The budget forecast will be published in November.

The BAM Government Relations Com-mittee has begun working on strategy for the 2012 legislative session. The Unlicensed

Contractor Task Force put together by the BAM Board has generated ideas for the GR committee and during the next few

months BAM’s agenda and legislative plans will be solidified.

Each local association has been working on hosting meetings with their legislators to discuss the fire sprinkler issue and we have received great feedback so far. If you haven’t met with your state legislators be sure to con-tact your BAM Board representatives to find out when the meetings in your area will be happening.

license Numbers are changing!!Effective October 3, 2011, the Minnesota

Department of Labor & Industry (DLI) has put into place an electronic licensing system. While you can now renew your license online, as a result of the new numerical system all licensed contractors are required to change their license numbers. DLI sent a letter to all contractors October 6, 2011 with the details.

Every license, registration and certifica-tion now includes a two-character license class code (such as “BC” for residential build-ing contractor see all new class codes here) followed by a six-digit number (123456). For those who have eight-digit certificate num-bers, the six digits, excluding “20” are your current certificate numbers. Contractors with four digits had leading zeros added to their certificate number. Your new license number is required immediately on all contracts and

correspondence with DLI. The new license number on all print ma-

terials and advertisements including website and vehicles need to be changed to the new number “as soon as practicable.” We will be in-vestigating what the means and will get that information to you. For more information about the licensing changes, check out the CCLD 2011 Summer Newsletter sent in BAM’s This Week the first week of September.

We Need You! To serve on the 2012 i-code committee

Currently the Minnesota State Building Code is based on the 2006 I-Codes and Min-nesota specific amendments. If all goes as planned there will be a new Minnesota State Building Code in 2013. The Minnesota De-partment of Labor and Industry (DOLI) has announced the proposed timeline and process to adopt the 2012 I-Codes with Minnesota-specific amendments.

The only thing scarier than new code lan-guage is new code language that is adopted without real life input from BAM members! Sign up to represent BAM at one of DOLI’s Code Advisory Committees. You will need to commit to 2 meetings a month and come in person to DOLI offices in St. Paul. You must be present to vote and we absolutely need you there to represent our industry. We are look-ing for members with practical field experi-ence.

Here are your choices:• International Residential Code (IRC, Ch. 1309)• International Residential Energy Code (Ch.

1322)• Structural Advisory Committee• Accessibility Committee

Please email Karen by Tuesday October 18th at [email protected] if you are interested in participating on any of these.

Builders Association membership pays for it-self by providing you with tools, information, ed-ucation, networking and both legal and legislative representation from three organizations. With one membership your local, state, and national associations give you three times the benefits.

Your state membership with the Builders As-sociation of Minnesota provides you with access to over $10,000 in legal contract templates, build-ing performance guidelines, code guides, build-ing best practices and answers to code questions found at bamn.org.

In addition to members-only access to indus-try solutions, discounts and the latest informa-tion on laws and rules affecting your business, membership now also provides you with purchas-ing power.

BAM has rolled out a new members-only ben-efit called the BAM Member Rebate Program found at www.bamn.org/membership providing participating members with rebate checks for purchasing from participating national manufac-turers. Manufacturers give money back to builder and remodeler members, large and small, for loy-alty to their products.

To qualify for the program a builder or remod-eling company must be a member of the builders association and must buy from a minimum of two participating manufacturers.

It’s an easy two-step process to receive a check:

1. Register online at www.hbarebates.com/bam.html

2. Complete and submit the rebate claim form for your completed home, remodeling project or multi-family unit each quarter by fax, mail or email.

A rebate form can be filled out for each home, which is recommended if the products used in each home differ greatly. Or you can submit one rebate claim form for a list of closed homes if the same products were used in each one. No receipts are required. Local manufacturers’ salespeople will confirm their products were used.

The program is run by hbaRebates.com to pool custom to midsize homebuilders and remodel-ers’ buying power and provide the same kind of rebate big builders receive. 70% of participating builders and remodelers have received more than their yearly builders association dues back. All manufacturers participating in the program sell in Minnesota, and a new associate program is being rolled out as well.

Check out the newest member-only benefit and get money back for your supply purchases at www.bamn.org/membership. Builders associa-tion membership just got even better.

ARE YOU DOING BUSINESS WITH MEMBERS?In the tough economy that we are in, it is more important than ever, to use the services of our members. Our associates

help keep the association going, with their membership, their volunteering on our projects, the Home Show and other events. Likewise for the associates, if they need the use of a contractor or can recommend a contractor, it is important for them to use one of our fellow members. If you are using services from non-members, encourage them to become a member of our association. This benefits everyone!!!

JACKPOT DRAWING WINNERS WILL BE LISTED MONTHLY

Will YOU be a WiNNeR???SPONSORS FOR THE DRAWING ARE

MIDWEST BANK AND THE BUILDERS GROUPYou must attend the meetings in order to be eligible. Every monthly meeting except March, (No meeting in the Home Show month) we will draw for $40.00. Initially, every name goes in a pot. And each meeting you attend will have another slip with your name in the pot. You must be there to win. So far, our sponsor for this drawing is The Builders Group. We are in the process of find-ing one more sponsor. Our meetings are a great place to network, talk to your friends, and most of all, learn about things that affect your business and now you could win some money too. Should the name drawn not be there, the $40.00 gets put in the next months pot, so you would have a chance at a larger amount.

Grants for Fall-Protection Contractors can apply now for a safety grant of up $10,000 to help them comply with Minnesota OSHA’s new residential fall-protection guidelines. In June 2011, Minnesota OSHA Compliance began en-forcing 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13). The standard states each employee engaged in residential construction activities six feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels shall be protected by a guardrail system, safety net system or personal fall-arrest system unless another provision in paragraph (b) of the section provides for an alternate fall protection measure. The Safety Grant Program, administered by Minnesota OSHA Workplace Safety Consultation, awards funds up to $10,000 to qualifying employers for projects designed to reduce the risk of in-jury and illness to their workers. The employer must provide at least $1 in project costs for every dollar awarded. No grant will be awarded for more than half the amount of the approved project.

For further information, visit www.dli.mn.gov/WSC/Grants.asp. Interested applicants can also contact the safety grants administra-tor at (651) 284-5162, 1-800-731-7232 or [email protected]. Information about the new residential fallprotection guidelines is available online at www.dli.mn.gov/OSHA/ResFallProtect.asp.

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOHappy Thanksgiving!!!!! It is

coming fast.

Hello and happy November! It is the month of Thanksgiving. I would like to give some focus to our Builders Asso-ciation on all levels. I am especially thank-ful for the LRBA and Sharon Westerholm. Acting as President I have had a unique opportunity to get to know Sharon and all of what she does for the LRBA. It has become more clear and evident to me than ever, that Sharon has a very strong passion for our Association, as well as, our industry. There is no doubt in my mind that she gives way more of herself than what she is compensated for. This month our general meeting is in Perham with Dave Neisen speaking. Until then… Happy November!

Dave will be answering questions and talking about any code updates. Dave always does an excellent meeting with his knowledge of the industry. Dinner will be on your own and the choices offered will be emailed out to everyone, so watch for it. I will need to know your choice so please respond to the email. There will be a drawing for anyone bringing in a new member of $50.00, compliments of Continental Western rebate to our association. If you need an application please call Sharon.

Wayne peterson and Jimmie Z were our presenters and did a fan-tastic job of introducing everyone to The Builders group Workman’s Compensation program. The food was good, as were the door priz-es, and so was the networking. Should anyone need information, let me know and I will get it to you. TBg is endorsed by BaM and our association.
