Greetings Everyone! This is my last official post in the monthly news

letter, as the President of the Lake Region Builders Association. As I look back on the year, I now wonder where the time went. Thinking back, this year was another good one for the LRBA. Sharon did a fantas-tic job as our EO and I want to personally thank her for all that she does for us. I would like to also thank the Board Members for their continued service to the Association.

I found the board meetings this year to be well represented, and fostered great discussions and decision making. I would also like to thank the mem-bers who have stepped up and taken leadership roles on the various com-mittees. These committees are very important to the continued success of our organization. Working on a committee is the best way to find personal reward in any organization. Your efforts in the LRBA will benefit you, and others.

The future looks bright, with the economy beginning to make a turn for the better. I can only be optimistic about the future of the LRBA. We have come a long way in the past few years. We now have a great office that pro-vides a firm base for our organization, a revised set of committees, strong committed board members and dedicated membership. I am confident that the LRBA will be even better in 2011.

Bryan Schoenberger will be our new President and he has already begun to plan for the future. He has set out a plan for the LRBA to do strategic planning training in February. This will be a huge plus for us and will help shape and grow the effectiveness of the LRBA. Thank you Bryan, for your support of the LRBA.

Thank you to all the members of the LRBA. It has been a great experience being the President and working with all of you. I am looking forward to the years to come.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the annual banquet at the American Legion Club on January, 7th don’t forget to let Sharon know how many are coming.

MeMber benefit: new 2011 engineered docuMents online

Here’s one more reason it’s good to be a builders association member! Every year since the 2006 IRC was introduced your membership has provided you with updated engineered documents to accompany the BAM Member Guides to Foundation Wall Sup-port and Cantilevered Foundation Walls. And I’m happy to report the 2011 engineered documents are now online!

The Member Guide to Foundation Wall Sup-port is a guide that includes an alternate method to R404.1 to achieve the requirements for supporting foundation walls. The guide was reviewed by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry’s Construction Codes and Licensing Division and deemed to be an acceptable alternative method to R404.1 as long as its followed in its entirety.

The Member Guide to Cantilevered Founda-tion Walls includes an alternate method to meet the intent of section R404.1.3 of the 2006 IRC requirement for a site-specific design for cast-in-place and masonry concrete walls with over 4 feet of unbalanced backfill. BAM hired an engineer to create a universal design so our members would not have to hire an engineer for every new home or addition.

icc code book Holiday offerThe International Code Council is offering a

holiday discount on Minnesota Code Books. Six codebooks are offered at a 20% discount and free shipping when you place your order before Decem-

ber 31st. See the flier/order form below for the list of

books. These codebooks will be valid through at least 2012.

For more information check out the ICC flier and order form here: http://www.bamn.org/im-ages/documents/icc-code-book-holiday-offer2010.pdf

Meet up at ibs in orlandoThe National Association of Home Builder’s In-

ternational Builders’ Show is in Orlando, Florida this year, the week of January 10th, 2011. If you’re planning to attend you are invited to join your fel-low Minnesota IBS attendees January 13th at 6:00 pm at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville in City Walk for a reception hosted by the Builders Association of the Twin Cities. No RSVP is necessary, just show up if you can. We hope to see you in sunny Orlando in a few weeks!

December’s Featured Convention Sponsor: Con-tinental Western Group with Reynolds and Reyn-olds

Thank you to Continental Western Group with Reynolds & Reynolds for being a 2011 Minnesota Builders Convention Activity Sponsor. They have generously sponsored the Friday night cash draw-ing and Saturday night’s Installation and Awards Banquet. Be sure to visit their hospitality suite #1111 and 1115 and thank them at this year’s Convention happening January 28-30, 2011 in Minneapolis.

Visit www.bamn.org and you’ll see something different; the BAM website has been updated in look and layout. The for-mat has been simplified and the content quantity increased to provide the resourc-es you need quickly and easily. Check it out if you haven’t yet. The address is the same, www.bamn.org, but the experience is dif-ferent.

Three main members-only sections include: 1) Legislation – Legal, 2) Regula-tion – Codes, and 3) Education – Licensing, which line up with BAM’s core functions and member services.

MeMbers-onlyThe new site has a members-only sec-

tion, which grants members access to thou-sands of dollars of resources such as legal contract templates, code guides, free an-swers to code questions, discounts and the latest information on laws and rules affect-ing your business.

legislation – legalIn this section you’ll find information

about the latest legislative and legal issues facing the residential construction indus-try, what’s happening at the capitol, legal opinions and cases, contract templates, the Notice and Opportunity to Repair Kit, and BAM’s members-only Building Performance Guidelines which are required with written contracts as of January 1, 2010.

regulation – codesIn the Regulation section you have ac-

cess, as a member, to the latest code and regulatory information including code guides, engineered documents, proposed code changes and links to information about the current codes affecting the state-wide industry.

education - licensingHere you’ll find up-to-date information

about education for Minnesota builders, re-modelers and subcontractors including the new required EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Certification and the new li-censing requirements.

MeMber accessYour BAM username and password is

required to access the members-only sec-tion. If you have any problems logging in please contact Communications Manager Katherine Nielsen at [email protected] or 651-646-7959 ext. 162.

cHeck it outThe new website was created to better

serve the membership. We hope you find it easy to locate the resources you need. If there’s anything you’d like to see on the website let us know. This is your associa-tion and it’s important to us that you find value in your membership.

BAM is also on Facebook and Twitter. Links to both are found on the new BAM website. Join the BAM Page and follow Pam Perri to get in-the-moment information.

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOHere it is the end of the

year. I have now been your EO for 3 and one half years. Can’t believe it! It is always kind of nostalgic when the end of the year comes, new people coming in for the board, new President I have to train. Bryan listens very

well so all will be good! There are a lot of things going on for the

New Year. Annual Meeting/Christmas Party is scheduled for the 7th of January, the Electri-cal Expo on the 21st, Builder Expo on February 8th, and the list goes on. Booths are starting to fill up for the Home Show, and if you haven’t signed up, you should to get your spot. Let-ters for the Expo will be going out soon. Think about having a booth or sponsoring.

I really encourage everyone to take advan-tage of coming to our monthly meetings. A lot of shared knowledge happens at these events. We also encourage you to invite a prospective member.

As the year closes, I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. May you be blessed with all that you need for the coming year.

Two blondes in a pickup truck drive into a lumberyard. One of the men walks in the office and says, "We need some four-by-twos." The clerk asks, "You mean two-by-fours, don't you?" The blonde says, "I'll go check," and goes back to the truck. He returns and says, "Yeah, I meant two-by-four." "All right. How long do you need them?" The blonde pauses for a minute and says, "I'd better go check."After a while, the blonde returns to the office and says, "A long time. We're gonna build a house."

The EPA is pursuing reported contrac-tors ignoring the RPP Rule in an effort to level the playing field. Many of you

have complained that contractors who have followed the rules and are trained on lead safe practices under the

EPA's RRP rule are losing bids to con-tractors who are ignoring the rules.

On a recent EPA Region 5 webinar on the lead rules BAM staff asked if the EPA is targeting people ignoring the

rules or those trying to follow them in good faith. The EPA assured us they want to go after those contractors who

are ignoring the rule.If you want to report a contractor you

know is working on pre-1978 housing and is ignoring the EPA's RRP rule call

Julie Morris at 312-886-0863 or email her at: [email protected]. We spoke with Julie and she said the EPA

is following up on every single tip sent in.

The information to have ready when reporting a contractor not following the RRP Rules:

1. Name of company2. Location of work including address,

city and state3. Any additional information you may

have: whether residence is child-occupied and built before 1978.

Each Monthly Membership Night, a jar goes around the room requesting spare change to be donated for “Pennie’s

for PAC” So what exactly is this cause and why are we promoting it?

BAM-PAC is the Minnesota residen-tial construction industry's Political Ac-tion Committee and a way for the

association to gather funds from indi-vidual members that are strategically con-tributed to candidates running for the

state legislature, governor attorney general and locally elected positions.

BAM-PAC dollars are used to support and elect candidates that will help ensure builders' issues are fairly represented

at the legislature. The residential con-struction industry has rules, regulations and laws your business must follow.

Contributing to BAM-PAC means the industry has a better chance of electing legislators that will understand and help

protect you and allow you to do your job. Download the brochure & donation form.

Richard Larson, Larson Construction, is the NMBA BAM PAC Committee rep-resentative.

cooperative relationships for all stakeholders”
