Greetings!Summer is over and we're
rounding the corner to you know what! Hopefully everyone is busy getting things wrapped up before it comes. Don't forget to stop and enjoy our beautiful fall colors and some hunting! It’s time to put the tools for recruit-ment that we've been discussing into action. There is a membership campaign going on and you have an opportunity to win $1,500 by simply bringing in new members. It’s a win/ win situation for everyone! So get out there and promote the builders association, each new member you bring in increases your odds of winning. The Builders Group will be sponsoring our October meeting with a dinner at the Speak Easy. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

the speAk eAsyWe won’t even have to sing for our supper as they are providing that for
us. There will be several reps from The Builders group so if you have questions on Work Comp they should have the answers. Tina Morales will
be bringing the items that we drew for at the picnic.
the First meeting oF FAll wAs held september 8th At the speAk eAsy restAurAnt: eric Sundby from the Min-nesota Highway Department was our guest speaker for the eve-ning. He brought everyone up to date on the new regulations and discussed transporting hazardous materials for the job. There was a lot of discussion and question and answers on what had to be labeled, what needed to be placarded for transporting these items. He was still answering questions at 9:30.

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOLife is good, but it sure gets
busy! I guess I do create my own busy, but education, membership and events are what keeps the as-sociation operating. I have added a few things to last months infor-mation. Enjoy the fall, because winter will be here before we know it!
I will be attending the State E O meeting on September 28th, 29th and 30th. I will come back raring to go, with lots of new ideas, or ways to add value to what we already do.
A Lead Renovate, Repair and Paint class is scheduled for Fergus Falls on October 18th and one in Detroit Lakes on the 19th. Hopefully each class will reach the minimum or it will be necessary to cancel again. Spread the word to you subs, such as, painters, dry wallers, plumbers, heating contractors etc…need this as well. Be sure to read Pam’s week at BAM as it tells what OSHA is up to and what they are looking for.
IBS will start taking reservations on September 1st, for anyone planning on attending. It is scheduled for February 8 - 11th.
I have started work on the education classes for this year. We will have a Power Limited class on January 19th and our Electrical Expo on the 20th, with a full day of credits and an ever expanding product show.
The Builder Expo is scheduled for February 14th and will be a full day of education for builder credits with a product show.
Our General Membership meeting on February 16th will have Ann Makres from the IRS to talk about Liens and the Fresh Start Program, Employee versus the In-dependent Contractor and Office in the Home, and how mileage affects Corporations or Sole Proprietor. Her in-formation should run about one hour, but it is impor-tant to know.
The BAM state convention is scheduled for February 23rd and 24th with the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) putting on a major product show.
The Home Show will be March 24th and 25th with set - up on March 23rd.
I also plan on a Builder Expo in Fergus Falls if I can put it together. We will be doing a JACKPOT DRAWING at all 8 of our meetings. The drawings are sponsored by THE BUILDERS GROUP AND MIDWEST BANK. We will start out with all the members names in the box and meeting attendees will get to add their name at each meeting again. We will draw for $40.00 each meet-ing and you have to be there to win. If you are there and have to leave before the drawing, it still counts as being there. If the drawn person is not at the meeting, the money will stay until the next meeting and so on.
IT WILL BE A FUN EXCITING YEAR SO DON’T MISS OUT !!!!! See you on October 13th.
From the Desk of Pam Perri….This week the National Association of Home Builders is holding its week of fall board
meetings. At the Exec Board meeting the report produced by the Future of NAHB Task Force, in which I was asked to participate, had been allotted 90 minutes of discussion on the agenda but was voted off the agenda before a discussion ever began. Again.
It appears NAHB leadership is unwilling to address the changes our industry and mem-ber businesses are going through and subsequently the changes all local and state associa-tions are going through.
Here are the facts: 44% of local associations did NOT elect or send representation to the NAHB Board of Directors last year, and NAHB has lost 36% of its membership the past five years. It’s disappointing to see NAHB leadership pretend nothing is wrong, and nothing has changed.
For a recap of the task force work, created in response to the NAHB commissioned Lang Report visit www.pamspov.blospot.com. The Task Force’s report is posted on NAHB’s web-site and at www.bamn.org/education.
The Latest on the Lead RRP Rule EPA Enforcement of the Lead Rule The U.S. EPA has started enforcing the Lead Renova-
tion, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule and targeting the required paperwork. Read the full Nation’s Building News Online article here.
NAHB has forms available for free for members. If you’ve never signed into NAHB’s website just visit: http://www.nahb.org/account_creation.aspx to set up a username and password. All you need is your six-digit NAHB pin number found on your last NAHB in-voice or by calling 800-368-5242x0.
New Lead Rule Requirement A new updated Renovate Right brochure is now required to be given to homeowners to meet the RRP Lead Rule. It can be downloaded for here at: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovaterightbrochure.pdf
Or here: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/rrbrochureoptions2.htm for other formats. Get Updates Direct from the EPA To receive regulatory lead updates directly from the EPA visit: http://www.nbnnews.
com/NBN/issues/2011-09-05/Small+Builders+and+Remodelers/2.html and click on the “subscribing” link.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has started enforcing the Lead: Renova-tion, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule with inspec-tions focusing mainly on paperwork and certifi-cation records.
“Although the EPA requires dust containment, lead-safe work practices and cleaning verification on job sites, they’re rarely inspecting renovation activities,” said Matt Watkins, environmental policy analyst at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). “We’re hearing from the field that inspectors are reviewing records, and the most frequent lapses reported are a failure to obtain firm certification and a failure to get signatures from home owners when handing out the ‘Renovate Right’ pamphlet.”
According to NAHB, remodelers report they have been given a week’s notice of an inspection, either by letter or phone call from the regional EPA office, requesting a meeting to review their business records for the last three years. NAHB also says remodelers have reported that inspec-tors have asked to see documents confirming their status as a certified renovator and certified firm under the lead rule.
Inspectors have also asked to see homeown-ers’ signatures verifying they’ve been given the “Renovate Right” brochure, in addition to lead testing results and all documentation for follow-ing the lead rule’s work practices. The Renovate Right brochure is available online for free at: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovateright-brochure.pdf
To be prepared for lead rule inspections re-modelers working in homes built before 1978, and applicable to the lead rule, need to develop a
system for keeping records. Copies of the follow-ing are required:
• Copy of certified renovator certificate• Copy of certified firm certificate• Signed verification receipts of the “Renovate
Right” pamphlet by homeowner or resident• Results of any lead testing, including EPA-
recognized test kits• Work practice checklist for the job• Operation and maintenance records for
HEPA vacuums
Information and resources about the lead rule are available on BAM’s website www.bamn.org/regulation and on NAHB’s website at www.nahb.org/leadcompliance.
If you’ve not been on NAHB’s website you’ll need a log in which you can create online at: http://www.nahb.org/account_creation.aspx or by visiting www.nahb.org and clicking on “log-in” in the upper right hand corner. All you need is your NAHB six-digit pin number found in the upper right hand corner of your last invoice or by calling NAHB staff at: 800-368-5242 x0.
To receive regulatory and technical lead rule updates directly from EPA enter your email with their new GovDelivery tool found at: https://service.govdelivery.com/service/subscribe.html?code=USAEPA_426
Some EPA inspectors have also requested ver-ification of worker training for individuals work-ing under the supervision of a certified renova-tor. EPA penalties range from $130 to $37,500 per violation, per day. The agency calculates fines according to its Consolidated Enforcement Re-sponse and Penalty Policy for RRP.

which was held at Oak Point Game Reserve at Bluffton, MN was a huge success for the first year. Members that had teams were I’ll Tile and Stone, Don Tietz Construction, LaVelle Corp., Tim Roble, Dynamic Homes, Greens Plumbing and Heating and B & M Electric. There were a lot of birds getting cleaned, so there should have been a lot of fun had by all. A few teams also shot clay traps while there. A special thank you to Mike Eiden-schink for putting this event together.
Greg Neisen of Crane Johnson Lumber and Joel Nelson of Stenerson Lumber Company were our food and beverage spon-sors for the two days. Thank you to both of you for sponsoring this event.

APPRECIATION MONTHAssociate Members are our
loyal partners in the association, industry, and community.
They’ve contributed countless hours of their valuable time, tal-
ent, and dollars to make our programs succeed and our as-
sociation grow.In honor of Associate Member
Appreciation we say:THANK YOU
Quite often sometime in the process of selling a home we need to call on the expertise of a contrac-tor. Sometimes the seller needs to have some work completed before listing the property to make it saleable. Sometimes the buyer cannot get financing without having some improvements completed. Or maybe the appraiser is requesting some things taken care of before the property can be financed. And occasionally some sellers ask us about specific builders as a new house is in their dreams. Since we play the role of communicator in these circumstances we often are ask to recommend a company or individual who can accomplish the task that needs the attention at the time. As affiliate members of your Lake Region Builders Association we are making an effort to
get acquainted with other members so that we can get familiar with the members, their products and their services and be able to recommend. We offer each of you the opportunity to come to our weekly meeting, tell us about your products and services and let us get to know you. Our busi-nesses are all about relationships and we’re looking to build some. Recently Rick Michaelson, Modern Heating and Plumbing and Mike Hough, Hough Inc. have given us the opportunity to learn about their businesses and to get acquainted personally and we invite any of you to do the same. Just call us at 846-1621 with questions or a time which you may want to come visit.Dave Branson Edina Realty

In the tough economy that we are in, it is more important than ever, to use the services of our members. Our associates help keep the association going, with their membership, their volunteering on our projects, the Home Show and other events. Likewise for the associates, if they need the use of a contrac-tor or can recommend a contractor, it is important for them to use one of our fellow members. If you are using services from non-members, encourage them to become a member of our association. This benefits everyone!!!

SEPTEMBER WASASSOCIATE MEMBER
Just call us at 846-1621 with questions or a time which you may want to come visit.Dave Branson Edina Realty

my ViewSharon Westerholm, EOLife is good, but it sure gets
