The Minnesota Builders Convention is

The 2010 Minnesota State legislative session will begin February 4, 2010 and the Builders Association of Minnesota (BAM) is working in high gear to prepare. The issues are currently being finalized by the BAM Government Relations Com-mittee and will be discussed by the BAM Board on January 8th. This year another round of warranty bills are expected to surface and BAM plans to resolve the home warranty issues this year.

One of BAM’s primary functions is to represent you, as a member, and the residential construction industry at the state capital. BAM advocates for you and provides a place for you to get informa-tion and have input on the most important

legislative issues facing the industry state-wide. We plan to prep all local presidents at the Convention with an “Advocacy Action Kit” which includes communication strate-gies, conference calls and issue briefs. The more voices raised the stronger the mes-sage becomes at the legislature.

This legislative session we will be communicating frequently with you about what’s happening at the capital. You will have more opportunity to get involved and be heard by the associa-tion and by your legislators. If you are not already registered you’ll want to get logged into Voter Voice, BAM’s primary communication tool for legislative in-formation and an easy and direct line

to your legislators. All you have to do is go to: www.votervoice.net/groups/bamn. Another option is to sign up and follow Pam’s capitol twittering at: http://twitter.com/PPWeaver

Getting updated on politics is just one more reason not to miss the third annual Minnesota Builders Convention held this year in St. Cloud at the Holiday Inn & Suites. If you’re not registered yet you won’t want to miss the fun, educa-tion, networking and association busi-ness. Join us by registering at: www.bamn.org/convention. If you’d like to see what happens at the board meeting and be part of the discussion stop in for the meeting on the 8th.

MEMBER NEWS: The EPA’s Renovator, Repair and Painting

Rule (RRP) is the class that we are hosting in Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls.

If you disturb 2 SQ. feet interior or 20 SQ. feet exterior on a home, built before 1978, you must have this certification.

The fine, if not certified, is $32,500 per day. This is a Federal ruling and EPA and HUD will be monitoring this.

This includes remodelers, builders, sheet rockers, painters, plumbers, handymen or handywomen.

I have sent out over 600 letters concern-ing this certification, but had to cancel the Perham class, as only 5 people registered. Spread the word about certification.

Just the contractor having the certificate does not qualify for everyone on the job.

BAM Gearing Up For 2010 State Legislative Session

Well December has come and gone and what a busy month it was! I am in the new office from 9 – 1p.m. Monday through Thursday, (unless I am running a Builder-sponsored class). There will be business card holders on our display ta-ble, so stop by and bring some cards. The office looks great and is much more professional than my home. I do have a wish list - if anyone has or would like to make a bookcase, that would be great, we also need a small refrigerator.

Things have been busy getting set up for all the classes: the Electrical Expo, the Builders Expo, the Home Show and the RRP Classes. Not many of our members have signed up for the RRP course. Class sizes are limited, so don’t delay!

I will be attending the BAM conference in St. Cloud next week. There is still time to sign up! Information can be found in this newsletter if you would like to attend. I have only received two nominations back on the award informa-tion. I will enclose the form in this in the news-letter. Please get your nominations back to me, as soon as possible, so awards can be ordered. I have only received two confirmations on our annual banquet. Two is a lonely number. Please RSVP, ASAP! WISHING YOU ALL THE VERY BEST FOR 2010.

Greetings Builders and Associates and Happy New Year

I hope you all had a wonderful Christ-mas, despite the bad weather. This will be my last letter as President of the LRBA. Thank you for allowing me to lead such a fine organization. It was a great year and I really appreciated all the help and sup-port everyone gave me.

I'd like to thank Troy Fingalson and his crew at I'll Tile & Stone for hosting our De-cember meeting at their showroom. The food was great and everyone seemed to be having a good time learning about tile.

I would also like to thank the latest contributors for their time and materials to get the office up and running – Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling for the carpeting, Jason Coley at Don’t Tietz Construction for door hardware and installation, Dan Mullikin at D L Window and Door for some item installation as well as a beautiful picture and Greg Neisen and Travis at Crane Johnson Lumber and Perry Nodsle at Nodsle Construction for moving furniture in and setting up. Let Sharon know if anyone was missed.

Our next general meeting is going to be the 25th Anniversary/Christmas Party on January 22nd. Please contact Sharon, as soon as possible, to let her know how many people will be attending from your company so she can plan the food. It will be at the American Legion in Detroit Lakes this year. We will be giving out awards that night so I hope to see all our members there.

Please keep the Home & Garden Show in your mind. It is the weekend of March 27th and 28th. We'd love to see as many of you as possible in the show. We'll also be asking for help, with the show, in future newsletters.

Thank you and I hope you have a healthy, happy & prosper-ous 2010.

The Call You need to Make!

Our December 8th meeting was held at I’ll Tile and Stone. Not only was it a good time, we received extensive information on the different types of tile. Alisha Wiesshoff, from Dakota Stone, presented educational descriptions on many types of tile. If you weren’t there, stop out to their showroom and look at all the variety of tile and flooring samples. Their displays and showroom set up is beautiful. Troy Fingalson, Sheila Heinonen, Renee Folendorf and Skye Larson were there to answer questions and serve a delicious buffet.
