It’s Hot - School Must Be Back!New School Year Off And RunningRochelle O’Mara

With much excitement the school year started on Wednesday at Winchelsea Primary School. Shoes were polished and uniforms were tested to see if they fit after a summer of play and enormous amounts of growing. It was great seeing all the kids turn up with big smiles and lots of great holiday stories. The Prep students had an extra days holiday and started on Thursday and were so delightful with their slightly too big uniforms and happy smiles. There was

not a tear to be seen from the kids as the parents left them in the capable and caring hands of the Prep teachers, although there may have been a tear or two from quite a few of the parents!

This year looks like it’s going to be a great year at Winchelsea Primary School with many improvements to the grounds and exciting programs happening. We are currently getting the netball courts resurfaced and the Gosney Street entrance redesigned with seating and garden beds under the oak trees.

The school has also been accepted into the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program so we are in the process of planning out and organising a veggie garden. Some people may have noticed that the shelter sheds have been removed.

This has really opened up the school ground and it is looking fantastic. If anyone has any ideas on how to keep the cockies away we would love to hear from you. They have been chewing holes in the new tennis court and love hanging off the new shade sails.

We are really looking forward to another great year at school this year. Anyone who would like to volunteer to spend time helping the fantastic kids from our community and our wonderful school are invited to contact the school on 52672134. This week’s Morning Melodies (Thursday February 5th) in the Winchelsea Tea Rooms has once again attracted a new talent in Soprano Prudence Hare, with considerable success as a performer already, who is looking forward to her trip down the highway to entertain us.Prudence grew up in Maryborough in country Victoria where she spent her early years singing jazz and performing music theatre with local companies.

She has a rich, full voice across the whole range with a warmth that will make easy listening to patrons in the acoustically

accommodating rafters of the old Shire Hall.

She has chosen to sing a range of songs from well known musicals (samples from Gilbert & Sullivan, Rogers & Hammerstein, & George Gershwin), 2 operatic arias by Puccini, and a comical song cycle by Leonard Bernstein “I Hate Music”. Local pianist, John Bumford will accompany Prudence on the grand piano.

As this goes to print, this week’s Morning Melodies is almost sold out with early pre-bookings, such is the popularity of this event in our town, with many enquiries from Geelong, which has no equivalent on offer.

The sumptuous morning tea at 10.00am

prepared by Philomena is a fitting prelude to the musical program commencing at 11.00am.

A special family fun day for the Morgan family will be held at the Winchelsea Golf Club on Sunday February 16.On march 17,2013 (her 28th birthday} Michelle Morgan (Taylor) collapsed suddenly. She died on Wednesday the 20th without regaining consciousness. She died from a clot on the lung. She left behind a devastated family including her husband

Dale and three young daughters. Tahlia 7, Amber 4, and Charlee 21 months. At the time they were living at Freshwater Creek. Tahlia attended Mt Duneed Primary school and Amber attended Belmont Kindergarten, Charlee stayed at home with her doting mum.

The family decided that it was best that Dale and the girls move in with Dale’s parents in Winchelsea. Mt. Duneed

families soon got together to raise money for play equipment, a much wanted puppy and other gifts.

Ali Waight heard of the family’s plight and got together many people who gave time and goods and arranged fundraising to turn the family garage into a playroom for the girls.

Dale’s colleagues at Deakin University also joined the fund raising. The Winchelsea community where Dale grew up are also looking to raise money for the girls future.

The Winchelsea Golf Club and the Community of Winchelsea is seeking your support and assistance for an important Family Fun Day to assist the Morgan Family.

The Family fun day has gained strong support from the community, clubs and organizations in Winchelsea and the Geelong region and we need your support to ensure the Family Fun Day on February 16 is a huge success.

Winchelsea Star ClassifiedsYou can find all sort of fascinating things advertised in the Star Classified. Did you see the one a few weeks back, ‘Talking Dog For Sale”? My curiosity aroused I went round to the Hesse Street address given. When I rang the doorbell, the owner appeared and told me the dog could be viewed in the back yard.

Around the back I found a very nice lookingLabrador Retriever snoozing in the sun

“Do you really talk?” I asked the dog.

“Yes,” the Labrador replies.

After recovering from the shock of hearing the dog talk, I asked, “So, tell me your story”.

The Labrador looked up and said, “Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the ASIO. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because

no one imagined that a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years. I actually did the East Timor and Indonesian President jobs that have been in the news lately.

“But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at Avalon Airport to do some undercover security work, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded several medals. I got married, had a few puppies, and now I’ve just retired.”

It was amazing. I went back into the house and asked the owner how much he wanted for the dog.

“Ten dollars,” the owner said. “$10!!? But this dog is absolutely amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?”

“Because he’s a lying so-and-so, he’s never been out of the backyard.”

More than three-quarters of all bushfires in Victoria are deliberately or recklessly lit, according to Victoria Police research. The research found that reckless behaviour is the most common cause of bushfires, followed by arson. During the 2012/13 bushfire season, there were 4,400 fires in Victoria.

On 4 January, 2013 – the highest bushfire risk day during the last bushfire season – there were 130 fires.

Victoria Police Crime Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana has revealed that three-quarters of all fires started across the state last fire season were preventable.

The most common causes include burning off, cigarette butts, campfires, car exhausts and machinery, the use of tools, bonfires and flares.

“Recklessness can be anything from burning off to using tools such as angle grinders on a day of Total Fire Ban,” AC Fontana said. “This careless, reckless behaviour that starts a fire is a crime.

“Victoria Police will pursue anyone who starts a fire that ends up getting out of control.“ecklessly-caused fires are often viewed by the community as accidental, but this reckless conduct has disastrous consequences.

“How would you feel if your reckless behaviour resulted in a devastating fire causing extensive damage and loss of life?” he said.

The penalties for recklessly causing a fire carry fines of up to $34,000 and 15 years jail. Under the Country Fire Authority Act, it is an offence to light a fire during a Fire Danger Period without a permit or complying with the designated restrictions surrounding the use of equipment that can cause fires.

The offence carries a maximum fine of

$17,000 or one year in jail.

AC Fontana said bushfire prevention was the responsibility of all Victorians. “This is not just something for police – it’s a whole of community issue,” he said.

“The community can visit the CFA website and download the ‘Can I or Can’t I’ brochure for information on what can and can’t be done during declared Fire bushfires. See cfa.vic.gov.au

Fire Prevention Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Singers Wanted - Singers are needed to form a combined choir to sing a special Easter musical “The Passion of Christ According to St. Luke” written by John Bumford.

The musical is based on the Easter story as recorded in St. Luke in the bible and is set for 4-part choir, soloists, narrator, and instruments to accompany the singers. Rehearsals will commence this Thursday, February 6th Church Hall at

7.30. The music follows the mood in the story line, with the choir singing the crowd reactions to events as recorded in the gospel with several Easter hymns interspersed. Those interested are invited to come to the first rehearsal to hear the whole work to see how it all fits together. An ability to read music is not essential, but helpful.

Enquiries can be directed to John Bumford, on 0419 535490.

Blasts from the pastLetter to the Editor ( Sound familiar?) September 8th 1977

Dear Sir

I would like to bring to your attention the deplorable condition of our public toilets. The week end sees many tourists travelling through Winchelsea, and the unclean condition of the toilets can only reflect on our Town. Could something please be done to upgrade their cleanliness particularly on the week end.

SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB CELEBRATES A BIRTHDAY Thursday August 25th 1977

On August 10th Winchelsea Senior Citizens celebrated the 11th birthday of the Club.

The first meeting of the Club was on August 10th 1966. The first President was Art Warner and Secretary Ruby Thompson. Jim Hinds was elected President in 1970 and current President “Paddy” Schroeter was elected in 1976.

Meetings were held in the Shire Hall until the new clubrooms in Harding Street were opened in December 1975. The building fund was started by the Lions Club in 1968 and over the next 7 years functions were organised to raise funds. A feature was the “Barwongatta” held in February 1972 which raised about $3,000. The balance of the building cost was obtained from a Government grant and

the Winchelsea Shire Council. An annual grant of $2,000 from the Government is matched with $1,000 from the Shire.

Club membership was 59 in 1967 and is now 140 despite losing many members over the past 10 years. Annual membership fee has remained the same at 50c. A notable contribution to early club meetings was by Lorna Stevens who supplied afternoon tea for 4 years.

About 86 members and friends attended the Birthday celebrations. The cake with 11 candles was cut by the oldest foundation member Mrs Addie Witcombe assisted by the oldest member Mrs E Phillips, a sprightly nonagenarian who later played a medley on the piano. Entertainment for the afternoon included solos sung by Joan Allardyce, Leila Forster, Dorothy Shinners, Ron Hunt and Foster McConachy. Bill Holloway, Nellie Clark and Jessie Gardner gave musical items while Jack McClelland and Dave Warner (fresh from recent TV successes) gave recitations. The afternoon finished with Jessie Gardner at the organ and Mrs Bone at the piano with folk gathered around enjoying the music and singing.

The traditional summer sports (cricket, tennis and swimming) have a heavy focus on the use of the arms, which differs from the winter football codes which are heavily focused on the use of the legs for running and kicking. Often it is in the preseason or early games that injuries in these sports occur as the body is not yet conditioned to the predominant use of the arm in a strenuous and repetitive way. Warming up for these sports is important for two main reasons.

Warming up prepares the muscles and

joints for efficient performance and helps in prevention of injury. There are three steps to performing an effective warm up. Firstly you need to get the heart pumping and the circulation flowing and the easiest way is to do a few minutes of jogging around the court or oval. It is also good to get the arms moving by doing some windmills or shoulder

circles. The next phase is to perform some stretching exercises and these should focus particularly on the throwing arm or arm using the racquet as well as the leg muscles. Stretches should be held for at least 20 seconds and repeated 4 - 5 times on each muscle group. The third phase is to practice some of the skills of the particular sport like throwing and bowling or serving and ground strokes. This practice should be done at a gentle level initially and gradually built up to a maximal level prior to beginning

play. During the course of the match it is worthwhile stretching again if there has been a gap in play or the player is about to resume bowling or serving. At the completion of the game it is equally important to perform a warm down which involves some jogging or walking and repeating the stretching exercises.

I will be on holidays for the next few weeks, taking a well deserved break with my wife and 18 month old boy. My next available appointment will be on Wednesday the 26th you require Physiotherapy sooner, please give our Colac Clinic, located at 26 Miller Street, a call on 5232 2400 and make a time to see one of our committed and caring Physiotherapists. Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page.Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted.Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

NoticeThe descendants of James and Amelia Riches are having a gathering in Winchelsea on Sunday 23 March.

We are anxious to find descendants of Peter and Elizabeth (Riches) McCallum to invite them to attend the event.

My great grandparents, James and Amelia, originally lived and worked on ‘Wormbete’. They raised their family in the Winchelsea area before Amelia and the family moved to Melbourne to further the children’s education.

Peter and Elizabeth McCallum were, of course, well known around Winchelsea.

Julie Johnson travelled to Camperdown on the 29th to compete in the Ladies

She won her two matches 27/18 and 25/18. Julie then had to return on the 31st a semi-final. Cheryl is the daughter of Billie and Bruce McCallum and a former Winchelsea girl.

It was a hard fought match and both played some very good bowls with Julie finally winning 26/23. The final was played against Faye Rundle of Cobden and once again Julie was successful 25/7.

As the Ladies Corangamite Champion of Champions she now has to go on represent the district against the Warrnambool and Portland region champions on 16th February.

Julie would like to thank the travellers, texters and phone callers who supported her in this tournament and will do her best on the 16th to represent both Winchelsea and Corangamite creditably.
