Our town has been disrupted. The roads are ripped up. We are confused. Where do we go? Is this street one way or two?The trucks rumble one after the other over the bridge. If you are standing on it, you can feel it shake. Traffic gets busier. The machinery at the river is pounding the earth. The pylons for the bridge are put in place. The noise can be heard all over town. The landscape is destroyed. The people are over it. Impatient! How much longer can we put up with this? Winchelsea will never be the same, they say.Meanwhile, below the bridge, oblivious to everything, our platypus play. Yes....platypus. Have you seen them? They are still there, every morning and evening you can spot them. Go for a walk about 7 30 am and look for the signs. Circles on the water surface A little patch of bubblesThen, just to trick you they will pop to the surface. A few feet away (just where you are not looking). Float for a few seconds. Then bum in the air they go for a dive. You may not be rewarded every time. Which makes the occasion extremely special when it happens.Wow.....these little creatures can teach us a lesson, can’t they? All that destruction and reconstruction around them and their lives go on. Without any fuss. Adapting to their surroundings. Unperturbed. We can do that. The end result will be worth it. Isn’t it amazing that we have such a wonderful attraction in our town. What other place on the Princes Highway can boast the same. The beautiful Barwon River flows on to the sea. And in it’s passing has shared something extremely special.

CorrectionLast week we ran a Business Profile on Winchelsea Taxis. The phone number we displayed was wrong. The correct phone number is 0429 672 888 and bookings can also be sent via email to [email protected].

And Stan would also like to let you know he has just ordered a stretch limo!

Editorial Of Deadlines and Design. For the first 20 years of the Star, the copy deadline was 11 am Saturday at Keane’s Pharmacy, with a late deadline for weekend sports results of 7 pm Sunday and publication day was Thursday. Arrival of computer type setting and emails in the 90’s, allowed the change of deadline to Sunday at 4 pm with publication date remaining Thursday. This year the Star is available much earlier with publication day now Tuesday, still with 4 pm Sunday deadline.

This leaves editors with little time to edit contributions, seek clarification or source more information, so articles that come in late Sunday afternoon are either dropped straight on the page or carried over to next week. The new co-editor, Liz Kemmis, thinks the Star has come a long way in the past two years and is ready to take the next step to further improve the design of the paper.

The steadily improving flow of contributions to the Star from our reporters (the community) over the past year, is in many cases coming in well before the current deadline. We are proposing to next year introduce a 4 pm Friday deadline for as much material as possible. The 4 pm Sunday deadline will remain for sports results and other weekend news. The Star is proud of its long tradition of weekly publication, enabling the printing of up to date information.

Along with helping with improvement in layout of the Star, this will reduce the demands on the editors on Sunday evening.

Blast from the pastNothing ChangesWinchelsea Star Thursday, April 27th, 1978After a meeting with various members of the Winchelsea community and two representatives of the CRB the following alterations to traffic flow and regulations will be carried out as soon as possible.

We suggest you make careful studies of the alterations and obey the signs which will eliminate the possibility of accidents on the highway whilst the bridge works is being completed.

1. The speed limit over the works area will be reduced to 40km/hr from approx Bennett Street to the Winchelsea HES. This will be indicated by the appropriate 40km/hr sign and a “traffic hazard ahead” sign.

2. There will be no entry or exit to Barwon Terrace on the south side (near the Church of England). Entry and exit can be made at Harding Street (Budge’s corner).

3. The present turning lines at the Hesse Street corner will be erased and new lines will be drawn to guide traffic onto and along the highway.

4. “Shopping” signs will be erected to guide traffic into the shopping area.

5. Various warning signs will be erected in the works area in an effort to help people and to prevent any accidents.

Please read and obey the signs and stick to the speed limit.

Keep our road workers safe this summer. It’s summer - there is cricket, BBQs and road works.VicRoads South West Regional Director Will Tieppo said summer provides the perfect conditions to do road works, but with that comes a concern for the safety of workers.

“The community has asked us to ensure the roads are safe to drive on and they’ll see us out there working to do just that,” said Mr Tieppo.

“Each day there will be more than 2,000 Victorian road workers over hundreds of sites across the state.

“However since 2012, there have been 37 injuries to our workers on road work sites. So safety is a serious issue,” Mr Tieppo said.

Mr Tieppo said VicRoads is responsible for more than 22,500 km of road across the state and will resurface the equivalent distance of road that is between Melbourne and Adelaide

“This summer, we will spend $84 million to resurface and reseal 735 kilometres of road across the state,” he said.

“In the Geelong area alone, we will be undertaking works on the Melbourne Road, the Geelong-Portarlington Road and of course the continued work of the Princes Highway duplication. Right through the south west we will also be resurfacing and resealing roads.

“There are times when we can’t complete a job in a single day and speeds will stay reduced, even if there are no workers on site. This is to keep you and your family safe as the road conditions have changed,” Mr Tieppo said. Geelong based road work supervisor Bill Alford, involved in the industry for 35 years, says he has noticed a trend of drivers taking work sites for granted. “In my role as a supervisor on work sites, I am noticing drivers are just

going to fast through our work sites, it’s a real worry,” Mr Alford said.

“We are working on the roads to improve them for all of us, but we want to feel safe and get home at the end of the day.

‘It’s such an unpredictable environment and we are all putting our trust into drivers travelling by. We can do as much traffic management and put safety measures in place, but if the individual driver does not take care, it puts us at risk,” the father of five from Winchelsea said.

With a busy summer ahead, VicRoads encourages road users to slow down around work sites, be patient and plan their journeys through VicTraffic.

VicTraffic is available through http://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ and downloadable via the App store.

2014 is the fortieth anniversary of the bequest of the Mansion and surrounding land by Sydney (Sid) Batson and his sisters, Lillian and Mabel to the National Trust (Victoria).

“Much has been achieved since at the Mansion”, says Trudi Toyne, Property Manager of the Trust, and: “this is a chance for the Trust, our volunteers and the wider community to welcome them to the Mansion just as the Batson siblings used to have family round for scones, tea and family fellowship many decades ago.”

With time there are fewer people with direct recollections of such occasions to share and this will be a chance for generations of the family to mingle and

learn of the heritage from each other. The generation grown up since the 1993 Batson Family Gathering will therefore be particularly welcome.

There will be guided tours of the magnificent bluestone Mansion, a group photograph and everyone is invited to a “show and tell” in the courtyard at 2pm. The new history leaflet will be available.

This is a free event. To book, phone 03 9656 9804. To assist with event planning, please also go to: http://www.nationaltrust.org.au/vic/BatsonFamilyGatheringat BarwonParkMansion to and reserve spaces for family members and the many others who knew the siblings and others in the community interested in heritage matters.

There will be plenty of Free parking. BYO Picnic Lunch (Devonshire Tea will also be available). The delightful Gift shop will be open with Christmas shopping in mind.

For further information phone property manager Trudi Toyne on 52 67 2209.

Letters to the EditorDear Editor,

I had a recent visit from RSPCA inspectors which indicated that the state of my horses had been a concern to someone unknown to me.

For one, my ponies haven't foundered, and secondly, get your facts straight! Do you know what foundered means?

I've had those ponies since they were both 3 years old, they are now 15. Before Bobby came, his tail, mane and fringe were all matted together and his feet were turned upwards. His mane, tail and fringe had to be cut back to grow to what it is today. He also used to stand in stagnant mud.

Ameros was constantly hit in the back of her legs with electric gates. I was told when she first came to me to open both gates to bring her through. I opened up one of each, within half an hour she was following me up to the back verandah.

So before you report someone to the RSPCA like I’ve been, I live at 40 Jackson St Winchelsea if you'd like to come to my door.

If those ponies need a vet, they have one. Their feet gets done every 6 to 8 weeks. I thought you'd like to know that their favourite chocolate is strawberry Freddo's. Debbie, the neighbour, gives them Christmas pudding at Christmas.

The RSPCA inspectors found no reason for concern regarding the condition of the ponies.

Yours faithfully Libby Lomas

Dear Editor,

What a classy little local newspaper we have for Winchelsea & District!

It has been an impressive, and I believe, successful effort made to upgrade the content, production quality and overall ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of the publication by the present ‘Star’ team. That there was still a viable paper to develop further is testament to the efforts made by former teams to keep it ‘alive’.

Visitors often comment on the quality – it’s design and content - and frequency of our weekly ‘rag’ as many other similar

publications are monthly at best.It is unsurprising that they have been again recognised with significant awards at the Community Newspaper Assoc. of Vic. Conference recently. (Vol 37, Ed 44). This seems to be an annual occurrence!

Well done and congratulations to all involved. Special thanks from the NHW team for the layout and catchy headline for the ‘Star’ coverage of our recent School’s Day (Vol 37, Ed 43).

It may be of some interest to readers and ‘Star’ personnel – past and present - that the Surf Coast Shire workers are nearing completion of an upgrade (complete ‘gutting’ and re-furbishment) of the old ‘Star’ office adjacent to Winch House and the Shire Hall Tea Rooms. This will provide a very useful extra space for House activities – community group meetings, classes, etc. for which Winch House is most appreciative.

Helen Verity.

Volunteers needed for Fashion of Weddings EventRomance is in the air at Barwon Park’s Love, Desire and Riches At Barwon Park we are delighted to be hosting the National Trust’s Love, Desire & Riches exhibition from 17 December 2014 to 28 February 2015 and we are looking for volunteers to help us run this exciting event.

Barwon Park will be open from Wednesdays to Sundays and on public

holidays to ensure people have the opportunity to see the exhibition.

Stimulate your fashion senses and wear your heart on your sleeve with an exclusive look into significant fashion pieces of wedding couture from the 18th to 21st century.

The exhibition’s focal piece is the magnificent pearl-encrusted, ivory silk Valentino gown worn by Princess Marie Chantal of Greece at her wedding to Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece. With a 4.5 metre lace train and a value of over $300,000, this amazing dress required over 25 dressmakers, 12 different kinds of lace and took more than four months to complete.

“The Valentino gown is spectacular but there are many other beautiful, intricate designs on show, including rare pieces from one of Australia’s most prominent contemporary fashion designers Akira Isogawa and much loved Australian designer Collette Dinnigan,” said National Trust (Victoria) Cultural Collections Curator, Elizabeth Anya-Petrivna.

Barwon Park has 25 valued volunteers who will staff the exhibition but to be able to cover the extended opening days we would like to invite interested people to also volunteer during the exhibition to welcome people and provide directions.

If you would like to be part of this exciting and visually spectacular exhibition please contact Trudi Toyne, Property Manager, Barwon Park on 04 66 796 430 to express your interest. Below: Dress worn by Kyly Clarke for her wedding day

It was with deep regret, we heard of the passing of our long standing member Kath Wilson. We had some very entertaining games of cards with Kath, and her “Trumping your Ace” will be sadly missed, especially for her partners. Kath was a staunch supporter of our club and whenever food was required, Kath’s sandwiches were always accepted with relish. Sincere sympathy is extended to Don and all members of their large family. Limerick Of The WeekThe fabulous wizard of Oz Retired from the business because What with up-to-date science, To most of his clients He wasn’t the wizard he was.

Recipe of the weekPumpkin And Spinach Rotolo Bake

700g Butternut Pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and cut into 2cm pieces.

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil

1 small Onion finely chopped

1 bunch English Spinach trimmed, washed and chopped

250g fresh Ricotta

1 1/2 cups finely grated Parmesan

4 fresh Lasagna sheets

Tomato Sauce

1 Tablespoon Olive oil

1 small Onion finely chopped

2 cloves Garlic crushed

2 x 400g cans chopped Tomatoes

1/2 cup Water

Salt and Pepper to taste

1/2 cup pure Cream

1. Place the pumpkin in a steamer basket. Cover and steam over a saucepan of boiling water for about 18 minutes, or until tender. Cool.

2. Meanwhile, make the tomato sauce. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally until soft. Add the tomatoes and water and bring to the boil. Simmer, covered for about 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper. Cool. Stir in the cream. Puree the tomato mixture using a blender until smooth.

3. To make the filling, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally until soft.Add the spinach and cook while stirring for 1 minute until wilted. Transfer to a large bowl and cool. Then stir in the ricotta and Half the parmesan. Season with the salt and pepper.

4. Place one lasagna sheet on a clean bench with one short end facing you. Working quickly, spread with 1/2 cup of filling. Top with a quarter of the pumpkin. Roll up the sheet to enclose. Cut into 4 equal portions. Repeat with the remaining sheets, filling and pumpkin.

5. Spoon 3 cups of the sauce over the base of a large ovenproof dish. (12 cup capacity). Place the rotolo, cup side up in the dish.Spoon over the remaining sauce. Cover with greased foil.

6. Cook in a moderate oven 180c for 30 minutes. Remove foil. Sprinkle with the remaining parmesan. Cook, uncovered for a further 20 minutes or until the pasta is tender. Serves 4.

Note. Use sweet potato instead of pumpkin, if you prefer.

Pumpkin can be roasted, but don’t boil it, as it wiull absorb too much of the water.

Work quickly when asssembling rotolo. Fresh lasagne sheets can dry out and tear.

The Staging area On Sunday 23rd November CFA units from Region 7 converged on a paddock in the Wingeel area. Their purpose was partly to establish fire breaks to the north west of Winchelsea but mainly to make make sure the systems and procedures work, and are understood by those who will be protecting us from fires this coming summer. There were about 40 vehicles involved and about 130 firefighters plus various support staff.

Once Upon A Time by Meghan Kattwinkel - Year 3/4 Once upon a time in a land far, far away from where we are, there was a land called the Oz, the ruler of this Mysterious land was ‘Malificent’ she was the scariest queen ever stepped foot on the land. No one knew except for Woggie the warthog that Malificent was unbelievably a witch.

Tuesday 7 October 2010 In the morning when all of the lands greatest and unusual animals woke up from a long nights sleep and got woken up by the sound of Malificent’s giant horn, the animals hate the horn. Anyway I will introduce the animals now. Well there is Cheeky the monkey, Star the unicorn, Woggie the warthog, Sporty the cheetah, Eliza the elephant , Marlie the horse and Hopsey the rabbit. They all were Malificent’s slaves they didn’t enjoy being her slaves at all.

Throughout the day they worked for Malificent but Cheeky was bad.

Tuesday 7 October 2010 (midnight) That night Malificent was horribly angry at the animals so she went to the “Spell Room” to cast a spell on Cheeky and his friends, her spell was to make all of the animals “FLY”. She thought it was an excellent idea so she made them fly.

Wednesday 8 October 2010 The next morning Star the unicorn woke up and saw all of her friends sleeping then she looked down and saw that she was floating but then she saw something strange and mysterious she had wings, Star started to freak out and zoomed over to her friends and told them the news.

“What are we going to do” Sporty the cheetah explained. “I don’t know” Eliza replied, “What are we going to do” they all screamed except for Woggie the warthog. “Ok now be quiet and listen I know who did this to us” Woggie said. “Who did it” Star the unicorn said. “It was MALIFICENT” Woggie explained. “OMG I can’t believe she did this to us,” Hopsey the rabbit replied. “I know but we are going to fix it” Woggie the warthog answered. “Now here’s what we are going to do we are going to fly over to Malificents sister Julia the fairy princess and we are going to get her to help us. “ok” Woggie shouted. They all cheered with excitement. That day they arrived at Julia’s kingdom and told here the bad news. Julia understood and started

pouring the potions into the pot and made a potion strong enough to break the spell for the animals.

Thursday 9 October In the morning the animals woke up with no wings and the spell had been broken, they got up and went to go find Julia but she was gone but she left a note. It said ‘Hello fellow friends I have gone to defeat my sister Malificent.’

Abigail Kuchenmeister - Prep On Sunday me and my dad went to Bunnings. And we got everything except for one thing. So we went to et a sausage and when we were in the ute we just remembered what we forgot. It was a pumper for the wheels. And it was funny.

Watermelon by Tylah Doss - Year 1/2 Watermelon Juicy watermelon Sticky juicy watermelon Dripping sticky juicy watermelon Fresh dripping sticky juicy watermelon

The Three Little Pigs Lucy Kennedy - Year 1/2 One day the three little pig’s mother told them it is time for you to go build your own houses now.

So they set off to build their own houses.

The first piglet built his house out of straw. The second piglet built his house out of sticks. The third piglet built her house out of butterflies but they kept flying away. Then she built her house out of bricks with a little butterfly cage inside.

One day the two brothers Itch and Ice came to see their sister called Angela. She was so, so so kind they got them six presents each plus two hugs each. They were so happy they stayed for tea. So Angela called her mum.

So Angela asked her mum to come over for tea. Yes please thanks. Then Angela called all her aunts, uncles, great nana, pa and her twin sister called Rosella.

All the family came to see their grandkids and Angela’s friends came down to. Then it was time to go home.

Later Angela had triplets. Then a few days later Angela got married to Blue .

Then her Dad and Mum passed away so they decided to go to their funeral.

Itch and Ice were so, so sad. They were crying and so was Angela. Then the funeral was over so they drove home. They were so sad that they got driven home in a limo.

The got home at night time so they had tea. Then they went to bed. The next day Angela fed her kids so they could go to kinder. They came home and they said that the first day of kinder was great. They wanted to go to kinder tomorrow. She said they could. Hurray, hurray. They asked if some friends could come over. Angela rang the friends and they came over.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Dinner With Friends! By Maddison Kattwinkel - Year 5/6 On Saturday 22nd February 2014 our friends Brett and Rachel came over for dinner at our house.

It was very exciting waiting for them to arrive because we hadn’t seen them in ages. Mum had spoken to Rachel earlier in the day and she said she would bring 2 salads and she arrived with a noodle salad and a pumpkin and goats cheese salad.

We had sooooo much catching up to do so we had a good chat and some nibbles. Just before Dad and Brett started cooking the steak and sausages Dad had to go and help a guy we know and unfortunately the gas bottle was empty so mum had to go get a new one. By the time Dad got home it was about 9:00pm and then they had to cook the BBQ so we didn’t have dinner until about 9:30pm. After we had dinner we were chockers (full) and we couldn’t eat anything else.

We had and awesome time and Mum and Dad showed them all our holiday photos and told them everything about it. It ended up being such a late night because the adults just talked and talked and talked for a long time. Brett and Rachel ended up staying the night and leaving early in the morning. Just as we were going to bed we remembered about the potatoes in the oven but luckily mum had turned the oven off so they didn’t turn all burnt and charcoal.

It was a great night and it was great to catch up again seeing we haven’t seen them in ages.

Church News

Christmas won’t be quite the same this year in Winchelsea. A local combined choir has been practising hard for the past 7 weeks learning “And The Angel Said...”, a Christmas Musical written by John Bumford, which will be presented in the Globe Theatre on Sunday December 14th at 7.00pm. Those who filled the Globe Theatre at the event last year will no doubt return to see it again.

The text for the musical is loosely based on the Christmas story as recorded in the St. Luke’s gospel in the New Testament, where angels are a prominent part of the narrative. The boisterous and bold “Praise To The Lord”, and exhilarating “Glory to God” sung by the choir share some of the angels message. The 20 strong choir, bolstered by some members of the Geelong International Harvester Male Chorus, lift the roof in the grand finale “Hallelujah, Praise”.

Soloists, Melbourne baritone, Graham Ford, and soprano Helen Menzel-Ling who grew up in Winchelsea outline the story of the main characters.

The choir is conducted by the composer, local musician, John Bumford and is well supported by Matthew Schultz on the piano, Geoff Coots on the Organ, and Geelong flautist Suzanne Moodie.

The narration, which ties the story together, with the words shown on the screen from the data projector prepared by Rachelle Javier. The music moves in mood from the rustic shepherd’s challenge “Let Us Go”, to the reverent “Sovereign Lord”, from the coy “Greetings” of the angel’s words to Mary, then the uplifting words of Mary in response “My Soul Magnifies the Lord” sung by Helen with the choir’s backing. The morbid tones of “This Child” sung by Graham, give warning of things to come in the young child’s life later on.

Entry is $10, with proceeds going to the Christmas Bowl. We can enjoy supper together afterwards, with the presentation lasting about 1 hour.

Something special for Winchelsea this Christmas. Here the Christmas story as you have never heard it before.

Please Write For The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Tuesday December 2, 2014 The Winchelsea Star 25

At its meeting on 25th Nov 2014, Surf Coast Shire Council resolved to refuse a planning Permit for a shotgun shooting range, sought by the Winchelsea Gun club.

The club began negotiations with the Shire in December 2012, to establish such a range for clay target shooting, on 9.15 hectares of fairly remote rural land, abutting Prices Lane, but identified by title as 475 Armytage Rd., Ombersley, about 16 kilometres west of Winchelsea. This site was offered to the club by a local farming family, to allow it to continue the shooting sport activity it had conducted on Winchelsea Common, for a collective period of 50 years. By a Council directive of Feb 2013, the club was ordered to cease its activities there.

All Councillors present at the meeting, except Councillor Rod Knockles, voted against the Prices Lane application which was formally advertised on 6th March 2014.

However even if approval had been granted, the conditions of any Planning Permit, as set out in the recommendation referred for Councils consideration, would have been totally unacceptable to the club. The draft contained 22 conditions, a significant number of which referred to works which had to be undertaken “before the use starts”. An estimate of cost for such works was in excess of $100,000. The term of the permit so proposed was for 12 months only, with a restriction that events could not be conducted in the months of July, August and September during livestock breeding periods.

For the past six and a half years, the club has been searching for a new home, as its tenure at Winchelsea Common had been under threat in that time. Over that period, more than 20 different sites have been investigated, and 3 fully documented applications for Planning Permits, for 3 different sites, have been prepared. Each has involved the submission of reports from Consultants in the fields of shooting rules and event conduct, safety, shotgun ballistics, acoustics, environment, flora and fauna, zoology, earth science, Police

policy, and Planning Law. In addition, many items of correspondence have been sent to the Shire, to provide additional information.

Costs for this small country club have been “frightening”.

Except for the courtesy, impartiality and professionalism of the Council Officers, at no time over the six and a half year period, has any assistance been offered to the club by the Council.

Since its formation over 50 years ago, the club has been fully self funded and fully self supporting.

Unless the Council is prepared to find a suitable site, as was intimated by Councillor Heather Wellington, it is unlikely that the club will mount any further applications for Planning Permits.

Meanwhile, the club will remain in recess as it has done since 13th Feb 2013.

By Kitty ‘n JackDue to a computer glitch last week, this week you will find you have 2 weeks of play in this report.

We have had to play in some dreadful winds this season which really tire you out. Once again last week, Tuesday and Saturday Pennant were not exempt from the blustery conditions. Tuesday Pennant saw Colac Lake travel to Winchelsea and Winchelsea travel to Colac Lake. Division 1 were def by Colac Lake winning 1/3 rinks, 61 shots to 71 shots. Division 2 def Colac Lake 3 winning 1/3 rinks 68 shots to 62 shots.

Saturday saw full rinks at home with Divisions 1 & 3 while Division 4 travelled to Lismore. Division 1 def Cobden winning 3/4 rinks, 103 shots to 92 shots. Division 3 def Cressy winning 3/4 rinks, 143 shots to 54 shots. Division 4 def Lismore winning 2/3 rinks, 77 shots to 60 shots.

Congratulations to Alison Parish & Julie Johnson who won the Women’s Pairs during the week. Runners up were Pam Mawson & Marie Drayton.

This week there was no Tuesday Pennant due to a State event. Saturday was a warm day where Divisions 1 & 3 travelled and Division 4 played at home. Division 1 were def by Colac Central winning 2/4 rinks, 85 shots to 104 shots. Division 3 were def by Camperdown winning 3/4 rinks, 92 shots to 101 shots.

Hunting for a Chrissie gift for a little toddler that is not plastic and tacky? Winch Men’s Shed has exactly what you need!Colin Mayman is the innovator in producing a line of beautifully handcrafted, tactile wooden toys including trains, tractors, tip trucks, buses, and a range of Dub cars to mention just a few.

“The toys are currently being exhibited at Bendigo Bank and we are working on placing them in other appropriate venues”, said Colin. As the Winch Shed acquires more tools members would be able to make more wooden toys which of course are potential year round gifts.

“We are as fortunate as amongst our 26 members we have professionals from the building industry such as David Loon and Bill Walters. They constantly teach us and are pretty quick smart about keeping us going down the right track if we are not doing the job correctly!”

A recent acquisition has been the purchase of a Dust Extractor, which once the collection intakes are installed above the various machines, will greatly improve the working conditions for everyone. “The noise level generated by the Dust Extractor has been of concern, but our work shop manager, Stewie Forbes, has built a sound proofed room for the machinery to bring the noise down to an acceptable level.”

Another big project in the Shed’s pipeline is the refurbishment of a very dilapidated wooden boat. “It is a big job that’s for sure but it will give a lot of enjoyment to the Birregurra Kinder kids once we finish it” stated Colin. The Winch Shed guys are very proud that each year they design and construct the props for the plays staged by the Globe Theatre Rep Society.

Winch Shed has developed a fine reputation for reconstructing gates, cabinets, tables etc and even dealing with those dreaded ‘flat pack’ items that we

all buy and often can’t work out how to put together properly!

Recycling is a big factor in this workshop and the wood shavings are collected for mulching the Community Garden next door. Coming up wintertime, they are planning to bag up their unusable offcuts and sell them as kindling.

Colin stated there is no age barrier for all males and the group is looking for new members. “On Wednesdays and Thursdays we are open from 10:00 onwards as well as some Saturdays. Interested people are welcome to pop in for a cuppa and see what we do here. Also paid up members can bring their projects in from home and use our tools in the Shed which is located in Hesse Street.”

For more information on the wooden toys you can contact Colin Mayman on 0407 208 903.Above 1. Colin Mayman and Ray Aitkenson 2. Mens Shed logo for the toys
