Morning Melodies returns this year with a change to the LAST Thursday each month at the Tea Rooms. Our guest artist next week is Queensland Tenor, Douglas Kelly.

Douglas is a recent graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of music majoring in classical voice. Throughout his studies Douglas performed the roles Puck in Purcell’s ‘The Fairy Queen’, Gherardo in Puccini’s ‘Gianni Schicchi’, the Auctioneer in Stravinsky’s ‘The Rakes Progress’ and covered the tenor role Britten’s ‘War Requiem’.

In addition to this, Douglas performed at the Bangalow Music Festival of 2011 performing in both ‘A Soldiers Tale’ by Stravinsky, playing the part of the soldier and in a concert performance of Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’ performed the role of the sailor.

In late 2012 Douglas sang the role of ‘Basilio’ in a production of Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’ to an English libretto and shortly after sang his first performance of Handel’s Messiah as the tenor soloist.

In November of 2014 Douglas again performed this role with the Heidelberg Choral Society and soon after the third echo in the Gloriana performance of the Monteverdi Verspers.

In 2010 and 2012, Douglas won the Margaret Nickson Prize for piano and voice, performing songs by Faure, Schubert, Purcell and Handel, and in 2011 won the

Donald Penman prize for ensemble o pair, performing duets by Mozart, Schumann and Mendelssohn.

Douglas is also a keen lover of song, having performed a public recital of Schumann’s Dichterliebe in his graduate year at the Conservatorium as well as a number of song recitals throughout Brisbane.

The program next Thursday will include arias from Handel, some beautifully crafted offerings from Schumann, a series of unusual Art Songs by Quilter, and some popular songs from musicals “Chess” and

“Carousel”.

Douglas moved to Melbourne in mid 2014 and is under the tutelage of renowned singing teacher Liane Keegan. He aims to further develop his voice move to the next stage of his musical career.

As ever, patrons can arrive next Thursday at 10.00am for a delicious morning tea provided by Philomena, and prepare for Douglas’s wonderful presentation at 11.00.

People are requested to make booking through Joan MacKenzie on 5267 2075 or 0407 506119.

Access to Visitor Information Centre

Currently there is no access to the Winch VIC due to the road works. Vic Roads & the works contractor have agreed to build a new path from the front door of the VIC around beside the building to meet up with the existing footpath in order to restore access.

SCS will remove the rose bushes that are in the way of the new path & re-plant them afterwards (early next week).

The contractor will have completed the new path to the entry for the VIC to open on Friday 13th February 2015.

Vic Roads will supply a sign stating that the ‘Information Centre is open during works’.

There are plans to create a new entrance in the back of the VIC, with a new ramp and steps up to the entrance. These works are expected to commence in April 2015 with no anticipated closure required.

Andrea Millar Coordinator Visitor Centres & Australian National Surfing Museum

Fire RefugeThere has been a lot of support for the plan to use Winchelsea Senior Citizens clubrooms as a place where people can go on Total Fire Ban days to sit and wait out the day safely and in comfort.

Unfortunately, no one has volunteered to join a team of coordinators to get the proposal up and running. Without coordinators the Senior Cits clubrooms can’t open!

The job is mainly sitting and talking with people and liaising with the Winch CFA. There has to be enough coordinators that the job will be for an hour or so one or two days per year.

Do we want the only alternative to sitting at home on Total Fire Ban days being going to Geelong or sitting in your car at Winch shopping centre?

If you are prepared to be a volunteer coordinator contact Mick O’Mara at 52672295 or 0427 672295.

Barwon Park ExhibitionOur Congratulations to all concerned in

bringing “ LOVE DESIRE & RICHES” to Barwon Park. If you’re thinking of going make sure you do, it’s fabulous.

I wanted to have a look, was well overdue in catching up with a special friend so we met at the Mansion - so glad we did. What a lovely day we had. Wandering through the rooms, reading the history on all the FABULOUS gowns on display, there’s even little movies running with the actual gown on display right beside you, how special is that.

There are original old wedding gowns as well as some from our present day celebrities. Jennifer Hawkins’ is a favourite of mine. Other names you will recognise if you go. It’s moving on at the end of this month, so be quick, you won’t be disappointed. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of going through the Mansion and finding out what has been altered in the rooms to bring them back to life, this visit was the first time I have seen the photos of parts of the reconstruction required when Barwon Park was found worthy of the funds. What history we have in our own back yard.

Another memorable room is the main dining room, ahhh you have to see it to understand the work that’s been done, again set to show off the gowns.

We hwanted to have a catch-up chat. Much to our delight the courtyard was set out just for this. We chose a table ooking at all the wonderful old crockery, how lovely to have these beautiful cups & saucers set out for us to use. We ordered our home made afternoon tea with a large silver teapot. What a great job these ladies have done. We were busy chatting away about our beautiful crockery when all of a sudden, two shall I say over excited flies dived into my cup of tea - well, realising it is after all Valentines Day it must be a lucky sign (much the same as when you have a bird dropping land on you, the recipient can’t always see it as lucky) but this we decided was lucky, as Phillis whisked away my cup with a replacement AND a fresh pot of tea, what a laugh. Bringing all good things to an end we couldn’t congratulate everyone enough. What a fantastic achievement for all. WELL DONE

Ash Wednesday traditionally means it is 40 days to Easter, not just the 32nd anniversary of a shocking bush fire although sadly for many it also has that connotation! We get the name “Ash Wednesday” from the ancient practice of placing ashes on your face as a symbol of the sorrow we feel when we recognize that we don’t live up to God’s standards. That practice predates Christianity as we see it recorded from the ancient Assyrian empire at Nineveh in the Old Testament book of Jonah. But even then the ashes were to demonstrate the persons intention to confess where they had acted badly, their willingness to make the changes they needed to redress their wrongs and to apologize to God for offending him. The ancient “Ninevites” did this as an entire community! Christians believe in a merciful loving God of grace who really wants to connect with us and who holds out the offer of forgiveness to those who ask and are genuinely willing to change. That is what Easter was really all about; it was not about what we call “cheap grace” which is what happens if we sweep crimes under the carpet, by covering them up and pretending they hadn’t happened! Forgiveness was offered to us freely but cost God dearly; so if we treat it like a ticket to keep on misbehaving we treat God’s gift with great disrespect and demonstrate that our apology was meaningless. Sadly we often have done that in the past and my prayer is that we won’t in the future, yet amazingly when we are genuine about wanting to change God keeps on forgiving us.

In the light of what we now know about the impact of human activity on our world perhaps finding ways of reducing our carbon footprint could be one contemporary way in which we could all “repent”; which after all just means changing our ways. Or perhaps after hearing Jason Brown speak on the situation on Manus Island last Sunday night at St Thomas hall, we might think that as a nation we need to repent for the way we have turned a blind eye and allowed our government to treat humans who escape to our shores to seek our protection. If sadly the plight of adults doesn’t bother us surely the suffering of the children will! Did you know that there are currently, still 221 children being held in mainland detention centre’s, and a further 119 children on Nauru the Australian Human Rights commission report highlight the abuse inherent in this practice and the damage this causes children and pleads for their immediate release. What a wonderful joyful act of repentance, imagine the blessing that would be for those little children!

Flipping fun for a good cause

Volunteers from Winchelsea Uniting Church are gearing up to flip pancakes for the homeless as part of Uniting Care’s Pancake Day. This year all funds raised will go towards Uniting Care’s programs that support people living in crisis. Sometimes

through no fault of their own, people find themselves in crisis situations. Uniting Care works with

these people to help them back on their feet and give them the opportunity for a fresh start. Your support will directly contribute to this cause making positive change to the lives of others.

This is an ideal opportunity to enjoy a delicious pancake while supporting an organisation that cares for more than 2 million Australians each year.

Come along on Tues 17th Feb in the Main St shopping centre from 10am and grab a delicious pancake for at least $2 donation and help those who through no fault of their own need a little help.

I Worked on Manus IslandJohn Bumford

A healthy crowd of Winchelsea people gathered at St. Thomas’s hall in the warm of last Sunday evening to listen to Geelong’s Jason Brown present a powerful 75 minute illustrated talk on his experiences as a Counsellor working on Manus Island with asylum seekers in the detention centre there.

After a welcome to St. Thomas’s by vicar, Rev. Wendy Gravolin, interim chair of the Winchelsea Refugee Support Group, John Bumford, encouraged those attending to join the group, and use the night to focus on projects of real value to refugees already in Australia.

Money donated on the night has been offered to the Geelong Combined Refugee Group to assist in payments to translators for refugees filing for residency.

John then welcomed Cr. Heather Wellington to chair the meeting. Heather introduced Jason, and encouraged those attending to get behind the group as it finds a voice in Winchelsea and beyond.

With a detailed expose of the conditions

under which people are held there, the lack of facilities, and the lack of any basic comfort in the searing high humidity high temperature climate, with little hope for the future, having escaped personal tragedy half a world away, Jason gave us a heart wrenching inside look at the life of such a person.

He detailed some of the seemingly insignificant, yet cruel practises of those running the centre – restrictions on drinking water, no soap or washing powder for many weeks, and few organised meaningful activities, and limited access to medical assistance.

The devastating effect of living on a camp stretcher for months on end, no privacy, and many of the single men squashed into Nissan style huts with no relief from the oppressive heat was graphically revealed by Jason through vivid description and well chosen graphic images.

The cruelty is added to the fact that within metres of the cyclone wire enclosure

is the cool refreshing clear cool tropical ocean lapping gently onto the island.

Jason fielded a number of pointed questions to complete the evening prior to all tucking in to more than generous supply of home-made refreshments.

Group secretary, Shirley Roszler presented Jason with a hamper of local produce in recognition of his wonderful informative and passionate presentation.

Thanks from everyone for the St. Thomas’s generosity in providing the hall free of charge, and all those who provided more than adequate provisions.

The group will host an open meeting on Tuesday February 24th at 7.30pm in the St. Thomas’s hall. This meeting is open to anyone, and will look at further practical projects in support of refugees.

Enquiries about the group, or expressions of interest in next week’s meeting can be directed to Shirley on 5267 2575.

ELMER

Elmer was a patchwork elephant. He lived in a jungle.

He wanted to be a normal elephant. So he set out to find somewhere to find a normal elephant colour.

Then he came upon a bush and shook it after that he became a normal elephant. He marched on back to the herd after that it rained and Elmer’s blueberry juice came off. From that day on once a year Elmer was a normal elephant.

PLANNING MY LIFE by Eve Mawson Year 3/4

PART ONE

When I grow up I will be rich because I’ve got golden hair. When I want to buy something I can just pull my hair and it comes out and it will be money.

I would like six bedrooms upstairs with white walls and 3 downstairs with a bathroom in every bedroom. And in the bathrooms there are waterfalls to wash your hands and to dry your hands you use a fluffy towel. When you want to have a bath or shower you will have to go underneath the waterfall.

PART TWO

A kitchen upstairs and then downstairs is an inside swimming pool and a spa. Outside I will have a big backyard, there will also be a tennis court and basketball court for my family and I to play on.

Also I will have a full time job being a midwife delivering new born babies!

Hi everyone, At long last we have had the rain we have been very patiently waiting for. Everything is now refreshed and nourished. Lets hope the weeds do not overtake the struggling flowers and vegetables.

Get well wishes are sent out to any of our members who are not feeling well at the moment. We hope the cooler weather will encourage you to come down to the clubrooms and spend a little time with your friends and enjoy a cuppa or two. We will even give you a biscuit, and someone is sure to have a joke or two.

Birthday wishes are extended to David Loone for the 18th and Ray Atkinson for the 20th.

Special congratulatory wishes are extended to our long standing member Roma Schroeter on her achieveing her 95th year on the 21st. Well done Roma, you should be very well practiced at blowing the candles out by now, although 95 requires a lot of puff.

Wednesday Results;CARDS Helen Bath and Les Hunter

Friday Results;BOWLS Vida Bath, Leila Forster and David Loone CARDS Beryl Read and Haydn Shinners SKIP - BO This game was a draw between Jo Jursak and Sally Atkinson COMPETITION Julie Loone.

FISH N CHIP LUNCHOur next Fish n Chip Lunch will

be held on Friday the 20th of February. Please have your orders in to Jean at the clubrooms by 11.50am. Phone number for the clubrooms is 52 672019.

LIMERICK OF THE WEEKThere was a young man from the city Who met what he thought was a kitty. He gave it a pat And said, “Nice little cat.” They buried his clothes, out of pity.

Growing Winchelsea

About Growing Winchelsea“Growing Winchelsea” is a place making plan, designed to guide the way Winchelsea grows, as a designated growth node in the G21 Regional Growth Plan, heading towards 2050. The plan has

been prepared by Surf Coast Shire Council, in partnership with Regional Development Victoria and the Winchelsea community. Growing Winchelsea aims to help Winchelsea become an even better place to live, work and visit. It is about creating jobs, attracting investment and planning for the future needs of residents.

It is also about fostering and building on the town’s strong sense of community, identity and heritage. Achieving these changes will take time, but we can start planning now.

Growing Winchelsea sets out:

• AVisionforWinchelsea,andPrinciplesforGrowth.

• Opportunitiesforstimulatingeconomicinvestment.

• A10yearstructureplanandabeyond10yearsframeworkfor growth of the town.

• “DemonstrationProjects”foractivatingthecentralactivities area around the Barwon River.

VisionWinchelsea is a welcoming and thriving township with a rich cultural heritage and country village feel. The residents of Winchelsea benefit from a full range of activities and access to learning, employment, civic and cultural experiences, whilst living in a place that has a strong connection to the beautiful Barwon River and rural hinterland.

The Growing Winchelsea Vision has been prepared to ensure that changes influenced by future growth and investment are informed by the values of the Winchelsea community.

The Vision also includes a series of principles, based on the four main thematic areas of the Vision, to help us to achieve our preferred future.

1. Celebrating the Barwon River • Enhance,andwhereappropriate,provideaccessto,

the Barwon River and surrounding environs so that it can be enjoyed by all both now and into the future.

• Linkandconnectdevelopmentineachofthefourquadrants of town, with the Barwon River as a focal point (the village “heart”).

• ImproveawarenessandvisibilityoftheBarwonRiverenvirons to encourage its active use by residents and visitors in healthy outdoor activities.

2. An authentic country village• Supportamixedeconomywithafocusontourism,

green industry, farm to table initiatives and servicing the growing population.

• BasedevelopmentonCouncilendorsedplansandstrategieswithindefinedurbanboundaries.

• Avoidlanduseconflictbycleardelineationofzones/precinctsandestablishingbufferzonesasappropriate.

• Supportretaildevelopmentthataddstoa“villagehighstreet”typeexperience.

• Requirefutureneighbourhoodstobewellconnectedtotheexistingtownshipandtocontributeinapositiveway to Winchelsea’s rural character.

• Ensuredesignelementsinnewsubdivisionscontributeto the country feel of Winchelsea (e.g. some wide streets, open spaces, space for gardens).

3. Rich cultural heritage • ProtectandpromoteWinchelsea’ssignificanthistorical

buildings and assets.

• RestorewherepossibleelementsofWinchelsea’sheritage.

• Utilisewayfindingtoolsanddelineatedtrailstoprovidelinks between historical assets.

• Respectandcomplementtheheritagefeelofthetownin commercial areas (including street furniture and lighting).

4. Activities for old & young• Consideraccessandinclusionforpeopleofallabilities

in order to promote a healthy and active community.

• Provideanetworkofsafeandsustainablepathwaysto link key community assets, public spaces and recreation areas.

• Supportandpromoteopportunitiesthatfosterthecommunity spirit within the town.

• Prioritiseactivelifestylesbyprovidinggoodpedestrianaccess through development with clear links to key attractions and improved public transport hubs.

Why do we need this plan?Growth in Winchelsea is currently being promoted at local, regional and State level, with the G21 Regional Growth Plan 2013 indicating a potential to accommodate a population of 10,000 people by around 2050. This is not a forecast based on historical trends but rather an aspirational target for Council to plan towards. Population growth will increase the demand for additional housing, supporting urban infrastructure (eg. roads, sewer, drainage), retail and other commercial development, and the load on community facilities and services (eg. the Barwon River reserve, sporting reserves, education, health). Growing Winchelsea develops structure planning options that will ensure the town is wellpreparedtoaccommodateanysignificantincreaseinpopulation over time.

Usingabaseof1600peopleastheestimatedpopulationin2015,itisforcastthattherewillbeanadditional650peopleover the 10 year period to 2025. The forecast growth rates across the 10 year period are a little higher than Winchelsea hasexperiencedtodatebutareconsideredachievableifpublic policy continues to direct growth to the town with matching investment to service the growth.

Beyond the 10 year period, estimated growth rates become much more uncertain. For this reason, it is considered appropriate to formulate structure plans for Winchelsea coveringtwodifferentperiods:thefirstcoveringthe10yearperiod to 2025, and the second looking more broadly at likely requirements following the 10 year timeframe.

Winchelsea & District Community Bank® Branch

Superannuation products by Sandhurst Trustees

Here for life’s big moments. With the arrival of our beautiful twin boys our family is now complete. But with three kids under three, things at home are definitely hectic. It wasn’t until we had kids though that we truly realised how important it is to make sure our family always comes first.Rosemary, our local Branch Manager, helped us consolidate our super to the award-winning Bendigo SmartStart Super®.It’s a low cost super product with automatic insurance cover. We opted to increase the automatic cover and add income protection, so we know our family will be protected should anything happen to either of us.

Bendigo Bank was here for our big moment. They understood the delicate balance between dreams and a reality check.Drop into your nearest branchat 11 Main Street, Winchelseaor phone 5267 3189, call1800 018 018 or visit bendigobank.com.au/wealthtoday and find out what they can do for you.

Divisions 1 and 3 played at home in very warm and humid conditions while Division 4 travelled to Colac City. Division 1 were defeated by Colac going down on all rinks, 77 shots to 126 shots. Division 3 defeated Camperdown Golf winning all rinks, 112 shots to 71 shots. Division 4 defeated Colac City 5 winning 2/3 rinks, 72 shots to 47 shots.

With just two matches remaining before the finals the ladder positions are as follows: Division 1 5th, Division 3 1st, Division 4 1st. Division 1 have two winnable games which could see them with good fortune, take up position 3 or 4. Competition between the top 4 in Division 3 is still tight however we play 2 easier opponents than some of the others on the home straight. Division 4 appear to only need to worry about Lismore, although all things can change in finals.

Last Sunday Peter and Jenny McConachy hosted a successful President’s day which was well attended by members.

The winning rink on the day was Doreen Clarke, Mike Devey and Eric Lewis.

Congratulations to Jenny McConachy who won the Ladies 21 up during the week, runner up was Una Ellis.
