Next week’s Morning Melodies (Thursday October 5th ) in the Winchelsea Tea Rooms has once again attracted a bright new talent in Kelly Trenery, a young up and coming Melbourne singer with considerable on stage success as a performer and at only just 21 last month, also as a Musical Director.

Kelly is currently completing her degree in Music majoring in contemporary voice

studying under Gerald Marko. She is also an accomplished pianist. She has had an amazing array of experience in performing on stage with the Babirra Players, Young Australian Broadway Players, Nova Theatre, and the Catchment Players, in such shows as “The Sound of Music”, “Once Upon an Island”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, “Hello Dolly”, and “Into the Woods”, apart from her Musical Direction with the Catchment Players of “Bugsy Malone and “Avenue Q”. She was privileged to be invited to perform at the

Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2010.

Outside of study time, she teaches piano and voice to local Primary Schools, and a Soundworks Studio, and even finds time to write and perform her own songs. She gives of her time willingly to help with music programs at the Lord Sommers and the Very Special Kids summer camps.

It is a delight to welcome someone with such a spread of interests and proven abilities to come to Winchelsea. The program she has chosen to sing for us includes songs from the shows in which she has performed and others from “Anything Goes”, “Guys & Dolls”, “Cabaret”, and Les Mis”, and the more recent “Wicked”. Local pianist, John Bumford will accompany Kelly on the grand piano.

It is wonderful that Winchelsea has the opportunity to see a range of musical talent: some fully fledged professionals, and younger performers on the way to a career in their chosen field. This once a month program is growing in popularity, and bookings are essential, with a sumptuous morning tea provided by Philomena at 10.00am, and the music program commencing at 11.00am. For enquiries and bookings phone 0419 535490.

Dear Editor,

I grew up in Tasmania in a small country town. My parents were old school, so showed no affections. One grows up wondering what that would have been like. I was lucky enough to be drawn to this tiny town called Bambra...Wow!!! What a punch such grunt can give. This tiny town is the home of angels...Angels who have endured adversity but still have enough love in their heart to share with others. I need this to be published, I need this woman to be heard, if it were not for her, I would have left by now. Patricia Schroeter, is one hell of an advocate for everything good. She has faced adversity and come through it with more grunt than I could ever wish to have. She puts soooo much into our community that is unspoken, it is time she was recognized for what she does, what she is and by god every community needs a woman with so much fire and resilience. It is not often that an individual creates so much change ever so quietly, it is these individuals that hold a community together. Thankyou Trish for being so strong and so helpful by being who you are...You are a legend in Bambra...

Anthea Youd-Holmes

Dear Editor,

Members of our community will no doubt be as angry, disappointed and frustrated as we are at the second theft of gas bottles from the Community House, despite significant security being installed.

That the Catholic Church Hall has twice had gas bottles stolen, and the Senior Citizens have had similar theft only makes us more outraged that community facilities – largely n.f.p. organisations – are being targeted in this way. I have also heard that the Modewarre hall has been a target, too.

Considering what it costs these organisations to replace, refill and try to secure their gas bottles, we are very keen to see the people responsible stopped from using our resources as a money making activity for them.

The Neighbourhood Watch / Crimestoppers mantra of “if you know something, say something” certainly applies to this. Somebody out there must know something about this – PLEASE pass on the information to the Police – even anonymously.

As you go about your normal life, keep your eyes open for anything which may seem unusual or a bit ‘suss’, any information may help.

Helen Verity Committee of Management, Winch House.

Letters to the Editor

Talking to the local football historian Shirley Leak, at Blues Bistro last Thursday night, Napier Imperials Football Club was mentioned.

This was a club based in the Wurdi Boluc area and I suspect, their home ground was the smoothest paddock available.

Shirley went home and consulted her extensive stock of football memorabilia then phoned next morning to tell me that listed on team sheets of the 1890’s were W and J Mathison who would be my grandfather and his brother.

A vision for a thriving WinchelseaA vision and 18 principles for growth for Winchelsea’s future have been released as part of Surf Coast Shire Council’s Growing Winchelsea project.

The vision and principles for growth have been developed through extensive community engagement and will provide a basis on which detailed plans for Winchelsea’s future will be developed.

These plans will include an updated Winchelsea Structure Plan and an Urban Design Framework for public spaces around the Barwon River and town centre.

The 18 principles for growth that will guide the development of the structure plan and urban design framework for Winchelsea’s future are grouped under four themes:• Celebrating the Barwon River• Authentic Country Village• Rich Cultural Heritage

• Activities for Old and Young.

The vision is that:

Winchelsea is a welcoming and thriving township with a rich cultural heritage and country village feel. The residents of Winchelsea have the best of both worlds, benefiting from a full range of activities and access to learning, employment, civic and cultural experiences, whilst living in a place that has a strong connection to the beautiful Barwon River and rural hinterland.”

As well as the vision, an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment and Economic Development Options Paper have also been developed; all of which are available online at www.growingwinchelsea.com.au

Work will shortly begin on the Designing Places stage of Growing Winchelsea, which will turn the vision and themes into clear plans that map Winchelsea’s future and produce designs for the town centre and riverfront.

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Heather Wellington said the thorough base of community engagement and research that has been produced with the community would help produce sound future plans for Winchelsea.

“The work that has been done so far gives a really strong foundation to help produce plans that will make the most of Winchelsea’s natural assets and ensure growth happens in a way that fits with

community aspirations.

“There will be many more opportunities for the community to contribute and explore ideas that emerge as part of the planning process so we can turn the vision and principles into concrete plans.”

Winchelsea Ward Councillor Rod Nockles commended the community’s involvement in Growing Winchelsea.

“We’ve had great community involvement in this process so far and I’d urge people to read the background documents, because they say a lot about Winchelsea’s rich history and potential as well as its future,” Cr Nockles said.

“This is an exciting time for the community.”

The draft Growing Winchelsea plans are scheduled to go on public exhibition early in 2015. Growing Winchelsea is jointly funded by Regional Development Victoria.

I continue to be asked “How do I get an article in the Star?” or told “The Star should write about……” this or that.

The Star announces on the cover every week that it is Your Weekly Community Newspaper and so is open to contributions from all members of the community. The Star has a policy of printing articles that directly relate to Winchelsea and district or are deemed of general interest to the community.

The people who get the Star out each week are listed in the paper and do a great job or sourcing and sorting material, organizing ads, managing

finances, doing layout and distributing to outlets but they are not reporters. The Star reporters are people out in the community who can express an opinion, start a debate, tell a story, and report an activity. For advice on how to submit an article, talk to our sub editors Stu Fountain and Tony Phelps, who are both out and about in the community

I have no particular interest in netball but the reports that Bronwyn Walker has compiled this season are so good that I have been much more informed about what is happening in the netball club. By contrast there must have been a junior footy awards night last week as we have

a list of who received awards but no pictures or details of the function. People are still interested in what is happening around the town even though they may not have attended the function.

The writers’ workshop being run next month at Winch House is an opportunity for anyone to work on improving their writing style. Not just writing for a newspaper but you can improve your writing style for use in letters, emails, advertising, stories or whatever you want to write. There is no charge for the workshops and it will run 7-9 pm each Thursday in October. There are already over 10 people registered to attend.

There’s so many products out there these days, that aren’t really food! It can often make it hard to know what you should be eating for a healthy body and weight. With spring in the air, it’s the perfect time to take a look at your eating habits, make some easy changes and start feeling a whole lot fresher. After all, you are what you eat!

A great place to start is to add more fibre to your diet. Your body can’t digest fibre, this is why it plays such an important role in digestion. There are two types of fibre, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre, like that found in cucumbers, blueberries, beans and nuts dissolves into a gel-like texture and helps to slow digestion. This helps you to feel full longer. Insoluble fibre is found in dark green leafy vegetables, green beans, celery and carrots. It does not dissolve at all and helps add bulk to your stool. This helps food to move through your digestive tract more quickly for healthier elimination. Many whole foods, especially fruit and vegetables, naturally contain both soluble and insoluble fibre!

TOP TEN HEALTHIEST SOURCES OF FIBRE• Chia seeds• Berries• Brocolli and Brussel Sprouts• Onion and Sweet Potatoe• Almonds• Flax Seeds and Psyllium Seed Husks• Green Beans• Cauliflower• Beans

• Peas

Good nutrition is not low-fat, it’s not low-calorie. It’s not being hungry and feeling deprived. Its nourishing your body with real, whole foods so that you are consistently satisfied and energized to live life to the fullest. After all isn’t that what this life is about?

Yours in Health, Dr Emily McDonald (Chiropractor at One Body Chiropractic –Winchelsea Medical Clinic)

Food for thought: “The Last will be first and the first will be last.”The parable of the vineyard in which we find this curious statement, is a story Jesus told in Matthew 20:1-16 where he is essentially teaching about the generosity and grace of God. In the parable, workers are recruited and promised a generous salary for a days labor in a vineyard. Throughout the day the owner of the vineyard keeps on going into the market place and recruiting more and more unemployed workers. At the end of the day he instructs his managers to pay all the workers, beginning with those recruited last and giving them all the same previously contracted and agreed salary regardless of how long they actually worked. When those recruited first discover they are being paid no more than those recruited last they grumble and complain saying they deserved more. The owner of the vineyard denies this

demand reminding the workers that they have been paid exactly the amount they had previously agreed was a good salary. He then challenges them regarding their attitude to those who had come in last and tells them that he has the right to be generous to these late arrivals since it is his own money and he is not giving them any less than they had previously agreed.

Now while this parable may challenge our attitudes of social justice it was never intended to be a parable about trade union practices. Rather it was intended to show the heart of a gracious God towards those who are often overlooked in human society, those people who are often left out or chosen last. The poor, the outcasts, the disabled, the unemployed, perhaps for us today refugees might come into this category. The parable is intended to show how much God cares for them; if they’d been paid less their families would have starved. The concept of the Kingdom of God in the scriptures is a place of social reversal where our cultural ideas of the value of people based on contribution or wealth are overturned and we discover a God who values the unloved and welcomes them into his kingdom ahead of those who thought they deserved a guaranteed position. Ultimately when it comes to knowing God it all comes down to his grace never our merit, we can’t earn something he offers freely and anything we then do “for him” is merely a loving grateful response to this amazing grace. The story was intended to challenge our attitude to others and rebuke our petty envy or resentments and invite us to be loving towards those the world frequently excludes; since it reveals that under God’s eternal reign these last will be first and the first in our world will be last.

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin.

Mental health first aid training for local communities(A media release from Member for Polwarth, Hon Terry Mulder MP)

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is to be offered to members of community-based organisations across the state so that the early signs of mental ill-health can be recognised and acted on.

Local Member of Parliament, Terry Mulder today welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge of a $350,000 training package which will give people the skills and capacity to help someone who is developing a mental illness until professional help is available.

“Mental Health First Aid International will be funded to deliver training to organisations which interact with a large number of community members, such as sporting clubs, men’s sheds and other community groups.”

“Expressions of interest for the training will be targeted at non-government

organisations and open to community groups such as local cricket or netball clubs or men’s sheds.”

“Other groups who will be eligible for the training may be in rural and regional parts of the state where there is more limited access to mental health services,” Mr Mulder said.

“Over the past few months, a number of smaller communities in the Polwarth electorate have shown their concern on this issue by holding Men’s nights to provide information and assistance to those who may be experiencing depression and their families, and I would encourage organisations within those communities to investigate how this initiative could complement the work that they are already doing.”

Community organisations have the choice of applying for Instructor training which

accredits people to deliver the standard 12-hour training course to members of their own organisations in their own community, or for the standard 12-hour mental health first aid training course for those interested in being trained in first aid. Similar courses are available specifically for individuals who deal primarily with young people.

“Training will be rolled out in communities from later in the year, once the expression of interest process has been finalised,” Mr Mulder said.

Expressions of interest are now open until Monday 6 October and can be accessed from www.health.vic.gov.au/mentalhealth or by e-mailing [email protected]

The first stages of a trial of new pasture combinations designed to inspire better lamb growth and improved animal health will be unveiled at a Pasture Update on October 8.About five kilograms per hectare of Tonic Plantain has been direct drilled into an old Lucerne stand at Warrambeen, a self-replacing merino, beef trading and cropping farm half way between Geelong and Ballarat.

As part of the 12-month trial, Warrambeen will split a mob of ewes with lambs at foot, putting half on the trial paddock and half on a straight Lucerne stand, and then compare the growth rates of the lambs at weaning.

The Pasture Update `Productivity Gains with Summer Fodder Crops and Tonic Plantain’ will give producers a chance to inspect the early stages of the demonstration site and hear from experts about maximising crop productivity and profitability.

The Pasture Update is presented and convened by the Grassland Society of

Southern Australia in conjunction with Meat & Livestock Australia.

It will be from noon on October 8 at the Warrambeen Landcare Centre at Shelford

and will

include an on-site inspection.

As a perennial herb, Tonic Plantain has qualities in its own right for lamb finishing but the trial is testing the outcomes when it is put into an old Lucerne stand.

Stephen Pasture Seeds supplied the seeds for the trial. Western District manager Michael Grant said that rather than spraying out and going through a cropping phase and then and re-sowing Lucerne, a recent innovation is to introduce Tonic Plantain into the old Lucerne stand to continue the stand as a highly productive finishing pasture.

“They work well together in that they offer extra production increasing overall live-weight gains as well as providing key minerals which reduce animal health issued associated with grazing Lucerne,” Mr Grant said.

“Tonic will fill the gaps where Lucerne has thinned out.”

Warrambeen usually grows wheat, barley and canola and along with the tonic plantain trial has introduced faba beans for the first time this year, with good early results.

Livestock manager Andrew Kirk said the Tonic Plantain was a bit slow coming out of the ground after the early August sowing but was starting to look good.

“It’s supposed to have superior animal health and live-weight gain attributes and light-weight lambs at weaning have

done well on it. It’s probably a good option for over-sowing into Lucerne to help maximise the life of those pastures,” Mr Kirk said.

He added that it was too early to tell if the plantain would become part of the farm’s ongoing pasture system.

“It all depends really. We have quite bad problems with red-legged earth mites and crickets on these heavy cracking clays and the plantain is not really known to thrive well in heavy soils,” he said.

“It’s very much just a trial to see how it goes. We’ll let it run 12 months and see how it persists.”

Program Leader, Nutrition and Farm Systems Group, at Agricom in New Zealand, Dr Glenn Judson, will speak at the Pasture Update on maximising productivity and profitability on forage brassica crops and Tonic Plantain and the protocols for measuring lambs.

Also at the Update, Ralph Behrendt from DEPI Hamilton will speak on use of summer-autumn fodder crops for improved reproductive performance and Linda Hygate from MLA will discuss pastures of the future.

The Pasture Update costs $10 for GSSA and MLA members, $20 for non-members and includes barbecue lunch.

To RSVP by October 3 contact Grassland Society of Southern Australia on 1300 137 550 or email [email protected]

fruits. But one of the most wonderful things to see is how their taste has developed and the great appreciation they have for new and different foods, with many parents who have children involved in the program commenting on how much more adventurous their children have become in their eating habits since starting the program. Crunchy Kale Chips, Gozleme, and Fritattas have all become

firm favourites of the kids.

The Kitchen Garden Program would be impossible to run without the wonderful support of the Staff and the Principal but most of all the the volunteers who come and help each week. These wonderful people enable the students to cook and try a much greater variety of foods as each volunteer looks after a group of 3 or 4 kids (under teacher supervision) making different recipes. It is also the highlight of

the volunteer’s week encouraging them also to go home and make new recipes for their families. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to come and visit the program to watch the children in action the school would love to see you - the program runs on Thursdays from 8:45-10:45 and 11:15-1:15 so please give the school a call on 5267 2134 if you can help out in any way. You don’t have to have green thumbs or be a master chef!!

Please Write For The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Sports and active recreation clubs in the Polwarth electorate are encouraged to apply for VicHealth grants of up to $3,000 each for essential sporting, and injury prevention and management equipment.

To create greater opportunities for clubs to access Active Club Grants, VicHealth will run two rounds of funding, opening today (15 September) and again in January 2015.

Applications for the first round of Active Club Grants can be submitted now until 10 October 2014.

“Each year, Active Club Grants support more Victorians to become active,” Terry

Mulder, Member for Polwarth said.

“This is increasingly important as we see the impact of a lack of physical activity in the growing numbers of people with chronic diseases and other health problems.”

For over 26 years, VicHealth has provided small grants to over 10,000 community sport and active recreation clubs across Victoria. The Active Club Grants recognise the important role local clubs play in increasing physical activity and helping communities stay connected.

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said Active Club Grants help clubs overcome two of

the most common barriers to preventing people from taking part in sport and active recreation – cost and injury.

“These grants aim to make it a little easier for clubs to buy items or equipment to encourage people to join their club, and help them improve safety for those taking part,” Ms Rechter said.

For further information or to apply for this grant online, visit www.vichealth.vic.gov.au/activeclub.

Round 1 – opens Monday 15 September, and closes Friday 10 October 2014. Round 2 – opens Monday 12 January, and closes Friday 13 February 2015.

All the candidates within the South Barwon electorate yesterday pledged to lobby their parties and government to make Moriac and surrounds a gasfield free zone. At a special community declaration event held on Sunday Moriac, Mt Moriac, Paraparap and Freshwater creek brought the number of Victorian towns declared ‘Gasfield Free’ to 25.

After a comprehensive survey of all residents over 16 years of age, 97% of Moriac, 96% of Mt Moriac, 93% of Paraprarap and 92% of Freshwater Creek declared they want the region to stay free of gasfields. Residents handed their declaration to Mayor of Surf Coast Shire, Rose Hodge, who was congratulated for the shire’s support on this issue. “We are hearing you loud and clear. We will advocate for you. We will do our best for you” said Rose Hodge.

The event attracted great attention from local politicians and candidates, as unconventional gas heats up as a key issue for the November state election. Attendees included Senator Richard DiNatale, Greens upper house candidate Lloyd Davies, Greens South Barwon candidate Lisa Ashdowne, Federal MP Sarah Henderson, South Barwon MLA Andrew Katos, Labor candidate for South Barwon Andy Richards and Save the Planet candidate Adrian Whitehead. Each politician had their chance to address the crowd on the issue of unconventional gas.

Liberal local state member Andrew Katos stated “I am more than happy to lobby the Minister Northe and the whole cabinet if need be. This area has said loud and clear they want to be gasfield free. I will start on Tuesday.”

Labor candidate for South Barwon Andy Richards matched Katos’ statement: “I will lobby the Labor Party to create exemption zones for those who have declared themselves gasfield free. I cannot

be blind to what I see today and what I’ve heard over the last 6 months on the campaign trail. Hopefully we will bring in a ban on unconventional gas across Victoria.”

Local Greens candidates Lloyd Davies, Lisa Ashdowne and Senator Richard di Natale said their policy was for a state-wide ban on unconventional gas extraction. “If we gain the balance of power our first call of duty will be to stop unconventional gas. We want a Victoria powered by renewables” stated Mr Davies.

Local Save the Planet candidate Adrian Whitehead presented his vision for the end of the fossil fuel industry and an economy fueled by renewable energy.

Sarah Henderson MP also reiterated her support for the community’s position and her support of renewable energy.

Local plumber and father of two Damien Marchant was happy with the turn out of politicians, but said “We already knew the party’s official platforms. We wanted to hear what their personal take was. We are very pleased that they have said they’re going to be advocates within their party for our communities, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.’

“Whoever is elected on November 29 has the power to exempt Moriac from the exploration license. That’s what we want them to do. The community have decided we don’t want the industry. We don’t want this cloud to hang over our heads any longer.”

More declaration events are likely to happen in across Western Victoria in the next few months, as another 5 communties in the South West and Otways complete their surveys.

Hi Kids,

Lucky you are on holidays again! I can’t believe that another term of school has already passed by! Remember to be very careful on the roads, as there is usually extra traffic around in the school holidays. I would love to hear from you and then you can tell me about some special things you are doing over the holidays. So please, send in your pictures, stories, puzzles, jokes etc. and put them in my mailboxes, as they are so empty! Don’t forget they are at the Winchelsea School Office and the IGA supermarket.

Jokes of the WeekQ: Why shouldn’t you tell a secret on a farm? A: Because the potatoes have eyes and the corn has ears. Q: What do you get when you cross a computer with an elephant? A: Lots of memory!

Q: What is white, has a horn, and gives milk? A: A dairy truck!

When Ken Jones convened a public meeting in the former shire hall on 26/2/1962, twenty two interested persons attended and it was moved that a Bowls Club be formed. Election of office bearers followed and J. Caldow Snr was elected President with K. Jones Secretary and R. Rankin Treasurer. A committee was formed and a joining fee of two pounds, two shillings established. The next move was to look for a site for a bowling green.

Obviously the Hesse Street site was adopted and construction of a grass green undertaken. In February of 1964 Winchelsea Bowls Club applied for affiliation with the Corangamite Association. The official opening date for the club was 13th February 1965.

The original Clubhouse consisted of 3 rooms moved to the site by W. Nash from behind the early Dr’s residence in Main Street. The present building was moved from a camp at Anglesea Power station in the early seventies.

Over the years the Club has had many talented bowlers who have gone on through Association events as champions as well. Although dress codes, attire and bowling equipment has altered the rules are much the same.

Members, past, present, life and

various dignitaries celebrated the 50th Anniversary on the 21/9/14 with a lovely luncheon and cake. President P. McConachy welcomed The Honorable T. Mulder M.P, Surf Coast Mayor R. Hodge, Councillor H. Wellington, Chairman of the Corangamite District H. Lydford and read out many apologies. A minutes silence was held for life member A. Collins who was recently deceased. Life member D. Worland who has been connected with the club for approximately 48 years gave a most informative address on its humble beginnings, many successes and enjoyable occasions.

There were many items of memorabilia in the form of photographs, newspaper clippings, attire both past and present which could be viewed by all present. A very enjoyable afternoon with many older members catching up to reminisce on happy times spent on the green together.
