To the Editor.

Thank you for publishing the map of the proposed Natural Gas pipeline roll-out. It’s a pity that SP AusNet, and presumably the Premier’s office, couldn’t use a correct map of Winchelsea!

The map shows Neilsen Street where the present Sussex Street is, and has been for two years.

It also shows an extension of an un-named road past ‘Neilson street’ down towards the river, where no road exists. Olny Street appears where a walking track exists, and continues on over ‘Neilson Street’ towards the river; again where no road or track exists.

Unfortunately due to a Council bungle, Google Maps and Google Earth still haven’t caught up with the change. This is extremely frustrating when trying to direct visitors and tradesmen to our house.

I hope SP AusNet workers go to the local milk-bar or IGA and pick up a current tourist map before work begins.

Jan and John Broadrick

To the Editor.

I write this letter to you with grave concern for the future of the many Cyprus plantations in our region. This week I went for a trip via Warncort, Colac, Camperdown, Mortlake and home through Cressy. I was devastated to see dead and dying plantations through this region. I believe this is being caused by a fungal disease called Seridium, or Cyprus Canker. There are no fungisides registered for use on Cyprus Canker. There are three species which cause this disease.

The disease is causing devastation to farmer’s windbreaks and home shelters and will cost many thousands of dollars to remove and years to replace. To my horror I noticed three trees near the scoreboard at Eastern Reserve have dying limbs. Can you imagine what our sports oval would be like with no shelter

Men’sShed NewsThe men at the shed, and the boys in the photo opposite have just completed building a Billy Cart for the school mentoring program. The head of the mentoring program at the men’s shed Mr Stuart Forbes handed the Billy Cart to the School teachers (Mrs Lesley Mathison, and Miss Simone Wallace) and the Boys who helped built it. Oliver Stone(Seated), Stephen Jacobs, and Jackson Stokes. We at the men’s shed hope they have great enjoyment in using it around the playground.

Also the men’s shed got the privilege to have the DO-CARE Bus once a month. Thanks to our councilor Mr Rod Knockles. The boys went on a trip to the Rockwood men’s shed in October and also went on a fishing trip to Queenscliff last week.(A few fish were caught). The boys enjoyed themselves, which was the main thing.

At this stage we are enjoying doing a few small projects for people around town, did fund raising sausage sizzles(Bendigo community Bank & Aldi’s in Colac),in November, planning the next stage for 2014(Extensions, fund raising, projects etc). We will also be holding a xmas breakup for the members and family on Wednesday the 18th December(Please ring for details before the 12th).

The members of Men’s Shed would like to thank the township of Winchelsea for their support in 2013,and wish you all a very safe and healthy new year.

Philomena has been the proprietress of the Winchelsea Tea Rooms for 12 monthsOriginally from Melbourne she moved to Torquay over 25 years ago when she bought a café in Jan Juc called “Eaters”. During that time she also catered for the Torquay Surf Club for 4 years and the Friday Night Dinners at the Bowling Club. Philomena now lives in Winchelsea with 2 teenage boys and leads a busy life looking after them and running the Tea Rooms

The building has an interesting history, once being the Winchelsea Shire Hall and Council Chambers. There are numerous exhibits of local history, photographs, honour rolls etc, open fire. Well worth getting a coffee and a snack and taking in this wonderful example of local history.

Philomena is open Wed - Sun, 9am - 5pm, but 7 days during holidays and on public holidays. The coffee is fair trade organic Jasper and the cakes are all home made. She offers breakfast all day and an ever

changing menu featuring seasonal specials and a BYO licence.

She is happy to cater for bus groups, car clubs, function, birthdays etc.

Last but not least are Morning Melodies held on the first Thursday of the month and very well patronised. $20 gets you the show and a delicious morning tea, bookings are preferred.

Philomena is extremely welcoming and would love to see local people old and new, so do yourself a favour and treat yourself to a visit to the Winchelsea Tea Rooms.

Grace Dendle - Prep Yesterday my father went horse riding on the farm.

The Holidays by Emily Caldicott - Grade 1 On the holiday I went to the Melbourne Show and I saw Jude there with his cousins.

My favourite ride was the big rollercoaster. My brother thought he was going to fall off. When we went down the big hills we went really fast. When we went up the big hill we could nearly see the whole town.

On another day I cut my thumb when I was cutting my apple. It was a really sharp knife.

On another day I met a new friend. Her name is Phoebe. She lives on my street. She lives three houses away. I went bike riding with her all day. On Thursday we have a play date at my house.

Camping by Spencer Stones - Grade 2 On Friday we went home and packed up our camping stuff.

On Saturday morning we drove to Mt Buller.

When we got there we made our campfire and set up the tents.

We went four wheel driving up to the hut. The tracks were very bumpy.

It snowed!

The car was very dirty when we got home.

Biggest Tsunami Hits America By Oscar Stones - Grade 3/4 On 9th of November, the biggest Tsunami hit America. This event destroyed over 500 buildings and people. After this event happened they called the Tsunami ‘Tsunami Mania’. Dylan Cross, David Tennant, Josh Luck and Eli Simpson was affected by this cause. This event almost drowned the famous Barack Obama. Now the National Government have decided that there will be a building that is water and wind proof, as a safe house.

Lorne is set for a low-key and family oriented New Year’s Eve with no public entertainment after the main fireworks are held at 9:30pm.

The low-key and alcohol-free New Year’s Eve will include a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour including drinking in public, taking glass into glass-free areas including the Lorne Foreshore and illegal fireworks.

The 9:30pm fireworks will be family-friendly and visible from most properties in Lorne, with extra security on hand around the Lorne Foreshore.

Booze buses and random breath testing will also operate on the Surf Coast over New Year’s Eve.

Lorne Ward Councillor, Clive Goldsworthy said the cancellation of public entertainment was aimed at helping ensure a friendly, low-key New Year’s Eve in Lorne.

“It is important that people can relax and enjoy welcoming in the New Year with family or friends in a safe and friendly atmosphere,” Cr Goldsworthy said.

“The scaling down of public entertainment is part of efforts from Council and emergency services to minimise any potential for anti-social behaviour and to ensure everyone can enjoy a friendly and peaceful start to 2014.

“I also remind pet owners to ensure their animals are safe and secure in preparation for the 9:30pm fireworks and the remainder of the evening.”

Torquay will also have its New Year’s Eve fireworks at 9:30pm.

Lorne set for low key end to 2013

Carols by candlelight is proudly brought to you by the generous sponsorship of the Anglesea and Winchelsea Community Bank branches of the Bendigo Bank, the Winchelsea Business and Tourism Association and our Winchelsea Lions Club. Other supporters are the SES, Hesse Rural Health, the Winchelsea Post Office and Andrew Price Electrics.

Helen Menzel Ling will enthral us with her beautiful voice as will Anna Babare and the School choir. There will be plenty of Community Carol singing so be prepared to make a joyful sound so that those still in Winchelsea will be sorry that they stayed home. The Geelong Pipes and Drums will also entertain us with their particular music and the children can write a letter to Santa and pin the tail on Mary’s donkey, so come along and bring your family and friends to Winchelsea’s community Christmas celebration. Don’t forget to bring something to sit on and support the Guides BBQ, raffle, and candle sales.

Let’s all pray for fine weather so that we can enjoy this unique setting at Barwon Park Mansion.

Submissions to The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page.Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the Sunday deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted.Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

100 gathered at the Deans Marsh hall last night to hear from guest speakers about the implications of an unconventional gas industry on the area.

The meeting was called by local residents after concerns were raised about exploration licenses for tight gas, a form of unconventional gas requiring fracking, covering the Surf Coast and Otway Coast areas and farmland as far north as Moriac and Cobden.

Speakers included Doctors for the Environment Australia representative Dr Jacinta Morahan, mining law specialist Felicity Millner, Senator Richard DiNatale and a beef farmer affected by existing wells in Gippsland.

While Deans Marsh itself is not currently covered by an exploration license, locals were keen to mobilise early and declare themselves ‘coal and gasfield free’, a process now underway with over 25 Gippsland communities, and the neighboring town of Moriac.

“The moratorium is only a temporary protection against fracking,” said local

resident Judy Cameron “and there is nothing stopping the State Government granting petroleum licenses for gas exploration now.”

A survey will now be conducted of the Deans Marsh area, offering information on the issue and asking people if they would like to declare Deans Marsh ‘Coal and Gasfield Free.’

The first survey meeting will be held on the 9th of December at 7pm at the Deans Marsh Hall and all are welcome to attend.

And The Angel Said..Christmas won’t be quite the same this year in Winchelsea. A local combined choir has been practising hard for the past 10 weeks learning “And The Angel Said...”, a Christmas Musical written by John Bumford, which will be presented in the Globe Theatre next Sunday evening.

The text for the musical is loosely based on the Christmas story as recorded in the St. Luke’s gospel in the New Testament, where angels are a prominent part of the narrative. The boisterous and bold “Praise To The Lord”, and exhilarating “Glory to God” sung by the choir share some of the angels message. The 20 strong choir, bolstered by some members of the Geelong International Harvester Male Chorus, lift the roof in the grand finale “Hallelujah, Praise”.

Soloists, baritone, Graham Ford, and sopranoes Helen Menzel-Ling and our our Maureen King sing the parts of the angel Gabriel, Mary and Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin.

The choir is conducted by the composer, local musician, John Bumford and is well supported by John Howes on the piano, Geoff Coots on the Organ, Deans Marsh flautist Lucy Quarterman and regular Old Time Dance drummer, Andrew Gibson.

The narration, which ties the story together is outlined by Buckley’s Phil Short, and will be shown on the screen from the data projector prepared by Rachelle Javier.

The music moves in mood from the rustic shepherd’s challenge “Let Us Go”, to the reverent “Sovereign Lord”, from the coy “Greetings” of the angel’s words to Mary, then the uplifting words of Mary in response “My Soul Magnifies the Lord” sung by Helen with the choir’s backing. The morbid tones of “This Child” sung by Graham, give warning of things to come in the young child’s life later on.

Entry is by donation, with proceeds going to the Christmas Bowl. And commences at 7.30 on Sunday December 15th. We can enjoy supper together afterwards, with the presentation lasting about 1 hour.

Something special for Winchelsea this Christmas. Here the Christmas story as you have never heard it before.

The statistics relating to violence against women are alarming with more than 60,000 family violence incidents reported to Victoria Police in the last financial year alone. In the Geelong region, close to 1,800 children were directly affected.

Councilors Brian McKitierick, David Bell, Clive Goldsworthy and Rod Nockles will be wearing white shirts and ribbons to the November Council meeting to show support for the cause.

“The statistics indicate that one in three women over the age of 15 has experienced physical violence, which is incredibly disturbing,” Cr McKitierick, a White Ribbon ambassador, said.

“I have seen first-hand in my work as a police officer, the damage this abuse does. We need to work together as a community to prevent family violence and break the silence around the issue.”

Cr McKiterick encouraged members of sporting clubs, local businesses and community groups to help spread the message through their organisations.

“I’m encouraged to see the support for the cause, including from fellow councilors and community leaders. This sets a positive example for the whole community and confirms that family violence of any kind is unacceptable. I encourage other men to register as ambassadors and to set a standard for how we behave.”

All proceeds from Council’s sales of white ribbons will be donated to Zena Women’s Services, a Geelong-based agency that provides support and information to women and children affected by family violence.

Council’s CEO, Stephen Wall, said Council had become the first in Australia to include family violence support measures in enterprise bargaining agreements.

Can any of our old hands identify this log truck or its owner? It is one of a number of historic photos of the highway between Geelong and Colac that the editor has obtained from Vicroads. This year marks 100 years since the Country Roads Board was founded which became RTA in 1983 then changed to Vicroads in 1988. While the current works of duplication is proceeding the Star will give some snippets of history from the excellent booklet celebrating 100 years.

At almost 1000 kilometers the Princes Highway is the longest in Victoria. The designation of the “Princes” highway was made in 1920 to celebrate the visit to Australia by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VIII.

The name initially was given to the road through Gippsland from Melbourne to the NSW border and during the year the name was also given to the western route from Melbourne, through Geelong to the SA border. The section to Geelong was the first section to be duplicated and the Maltby Bypass around Werribee , the first stretch of road in Victoria to be built to freeway standards, was opened in 1961.

Can any of our old hands...
