Barwon Park and Ethical FarmingAn opinion piece - Mick O’Mara
Winchelsea has so many assets that make it a beautiful spot to live; the community, the river, the Otways and Barwon Park just to name a few. Barwon Park is an extremely rare asset for a small country town, (or even a big one), to have. The Mansion is known to us all but in this opinion piece I wish to draw attention to the learning possibilities offered by Barwon Park as a farm, both in a historical sense and current day. When Thomas Austin squatted on the land of Barwon Park it stretched from around Winchelsea to passed Inverleigh. He used it to run sheep for wool and meat. In 1855 the Government took the land back from the squatters, subdivided it, and put it up for sale. 1855 was gold rush times and, because of the hungry miners, Thomas had plenty of money and was able to buy much of the land back again. No doubt, farming activities also financed the construction of The Mansion in 1869.
Primary production was the industry that maintained Barwon Park under the Batson ownership and even today, the National
Trust derives much of their Barwon Park income from leasing out the farm section of the property.
On hundred years ago, when the Batsons became the owners of Barwon Park, Australia and the world was a different place. Even in cities many properties had a house cow attached. Instead of a garage for cars, there were stables for horses and in the backyard was a flock of hens. Because of the close connect between farm animals and communities, in my opinion, there was much greater understanding of animal needs than there is in the 21st century. Our food comes from supermarkets!
This disconnect between our food sources and our society was really brought home to me some years ago when I was a volunteer at Werribee Zoo. Numerous kids, and even some adults, were terrified by the chooks wandering the African village.
Sure the hens presented themselves when they came begging for food but objects of horror..........?
Because of the disconnect between society and food sources we can get our eggs from hens that spend almost their whole life in a tiny “jail” instead of from free range chooks that are able to scratch around to their heart’s content, we can get our steak from feed lots instead of paddock cattle and we can pack stock that are heading to a very uncertain future on to boats when the humane action would be to process them here in Oz.
This I see as an extremely important role for Barwon Park, to reconnect our society with the food sources it depends upon.Below: A hen in a battery cage.

The Scouts’ Goulburn River Canoe trip on the last weekend of the April school holidays, saw 5 of us head off to Seymour on Friday afternoon. We stayed our first night at Goulburn River Tourist Park in Seymour. After we set up our tents and beds, we headed just out of Seymour to visit Light Horse Park. Light Horse Park was an Army training camp for World Wars I and II. It has been retained as a bush area with remnants of buildings, various monuments and information boards about the Light Horse and other brigades which trained there. The view from the top of the park as the sun started to go down was really striking. We used the camp kitchen to cook our tea and prepare some of our gear for the next day. Some of the other travellers staying at the Park spoke to us about our trip, surprised and delighted that we were doing something so exciting.
First thing Saturday morning, we ate breakfast and packed up our tents, bedding, clothing, food and stoves. All of our supplies needed to be carried in the 2 canoes, as the kayak doesn’t have storage room. We each had a barrel and a dry bag, plus a cooler bag and barrel for our food – so quite a load.
Fortunately, we had the support of Chris’s parents and Marie’s daughter to move cars and to pilot the rescue boat (Russell & Wags the dog) which followed along behind us ‘just in case’. We put in just below Seymour and started our journey with the river running at a nice pace. We had a long day ahead of us, but the Scouts had planned where our rest stops would be and we tracked our progress with the GPS.
When we stopped for lunch, it was out with the food bag and barrel, producing freshly made salad rolls and juicy apples.
We rested for a while, sharing our lunch with Wags and then loaded back up and pushed back out into the river. We needed to be aware of shallow inner bends and the current pushing up across under trees on the outer side of the bend. Mid river there were fallen trees to dodge, so we needed to stay alert and use those strokes we learned in our canoeing course training.
Chris had arranged for us to stay overnight on private property of a former canoeing champion. As our expected arrival time drew nearer, the landing to this property was around one more bend, or maybe the next one or.... Finally, after a long day we arrived and pulled the canoes up onto the land. We unloaded our gear and climbed up onto a lovely grassed bank to set up our tents. A high table had been made by the property owners, with 2 planks attached to 2 trees and we set up our trangias there.
This was the younger Scouts first camp experience with trangias. We had practiced in the hall but now this was for real. They produced a chicken pasta meal for main course, followed by steamed puddings and custard for dessert.
After the dishes were done, the Scouts lit a fire in the fire pit and we sat around a red gum fire by the side of the river in the moonlight until fatigue sent us to our beds.
Next morning was a cooked porridge breakfast, dishes, gear packed up and into the boats by 9:30am. After a short while of paddling, the current cut out and it was much more of an effort to keep moving. Fortunately, we had only about 6km to paddle to the Mitchellstown bridge where Chris’s Mum would meet us with a car. As energy lagged, Chris promised a chocolate bar to the first one to sight the bridge and another for the first to reach the bridge, spurring the Scouts into furious action!
The trip was a real challenge to our Scouts, given that they are new paddlers and quite young. All rose to that challenge and should be very proud of completing the trip. As Leaders, we look forward to undertaking many more adventures with them.

Church News
While both carriageways of the Princes Highway duplication between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea have recently opened, a fully completed road will be delayed as sealing has now been suspended for winter.VicRoads Project Director Tony Hedley said with winter conditions now here, final sealing of the road has to wait until warm and dry weather returns in late spring/early summer. Temperatures in the order of 20 degrees are required for this work to ensure a durable road surface.
“VicRoads contractor BMD Constructions has generally finished for the winter period and will resume to complete the duplication when weather conditions are more suitable.” Mr Hedley said.
“While there is not a lot to do, and the majority of the dual highway is open to
traffic at 100km/h, two sections of the road still require a final touch to finish things off.
“A 1300m length between the railway line and Buckley on the Geelong bound lanes and a 200m section just east of Mount Pollock Road on the Colac bound lanes need to dry before they can be sealed.
Subject to further observation under traffic, a five kilometre section of the highway between Buckley and Winchelsea Colac bound, currently with one lane closed, will soon be opened to two lanes.
The current conditions are expected to have no impact on traffic flow, and will result in minor additional travel time only, due to the 80 km/h speed limit.
Street lighting is fully installed along the highway, however only the lights at Pettavel Road, Cape Otway Road and Hendy Main Road have been certified by
Powercor, and subsequently switched on. The remainder are expected to be turned on progressively before the end of July.
The four lane divided highway, featuring three metre shoulders and a wide median for safety, will make travel between Melbourne and south western Victoria easier for the more than 8,500 drivers who use this road daily.
As part of this project, 15 improved intersections and four u-turn opportunities are provided, to allow safe movements while maintaining priority to the east-west traffic travelling at 100km/h from Melbourne to Winchelsea.
“We apologise for this inconvenience and thank all road users for their patience during the road construction,” Mr Hedley said.

After snack we went to the library. A girl was at the library and her name was Lee and she was from the Belmont library. Also we did games, songs and read books. One was Pig the pug. This book ate my dog and you can borrow 40 books and 15 videos. Also on the way out we got to have a pat of Rory. And Rory was beautiful and I loved it. Amelia Paff

Today a person called Lee came to our school. She was from the Belmont Library. She came to read some very funny books.
The first thing we did was talking about libraries. We talked about a library card. With a library card you can borrow 40 books from every library!!! It is all FREE! You can borrow for a month or more. The next thing we did was Lee introduced Rory her dragon who looks after the Belmont Library at night. We did a song and then we read 3 stories. They were all very funny. After we did the 3 fantastic stories we did a goodbye song. The song was fantastic!!! We got to pat Rory on the way out. I loved it. Matilda Salmon
On the 15/6/15 we went to our library. A lady called Lee came from the Belmont Library. First Lee told us about her library and other libraries in Geelong. And she even told us the rules. Lee told us about her dragon Rory (he was not real). She told us that you can borrow 40 things in total and you can borrow 15 movies and you can borrow 25 books. We sang the song Ramp Stamp Ramp. Then we read three stories. My favourite was “The Book Ate My Dog”. On the way back we got to pat Rory. Shivansh Bhutani

Dear Editor Recently I lent my “life story” book to a local person but forgot who I did. I would please like the book returned or could you let me know if you have it. It would be very much appreciated if you have my book returned ASAP.
Thanking you John Read 40 Main St Winchelsea.
Dear Editor The letter that appeared in the Star last week is truly misinformed. Volunteers of the Information Centre certainly did no roll up on Monday 8th June because the new iniforms were free. I found this very insulting. WE did not ask for new uniforms it came from the Surfcoast Shire and they have a rule if the uniform is changed we are no longer able to wear the old one.
WE were all quite satified with our uniforms and were not looking for a handout.
We are dedicated members of this commumity. Most of our members are longtime residents and we give of our time and effort in helping people as they travel through our town. Many of us have been doing so since the inceptionm of this service. WE are greatly appreciated by travellers and some newcomers to this town who are seeking help and information. I would ask the writer what are you doing for our town?

Local traders set to raise more fundsBarbecue and stall held first saturday of every monthThe Main Street traders will continue an initiative to raise funds for local community groups.
Led by Sukoon at the IGA, there will be a barbecue and stall held outside the IGA on the first Saturday of every month, the first being held this coming Saturday.
Each of the traders involved will either donate goods for the barbecue and stall... or for a raffle.
We had Ashwani and Mayuri from Winchelsea IGA, Lyn from Maguires butchers, Local bakery, Local Indian restaurant and Jodie from local Milk Bar all contribute to this BBQ for the fundraiser. And special Thanks to Lions Club for bringing their BBQ and doing it all.
The benefactors of the funds raised for the rest of this year will be the Winchelsea Primary School.
So, look out for the barbecue and stall this Saturday and please help Sukoon and the traders raise funds for our very grateful community groups!

South-east South Australian dairy farmer Andrew Cavill has just finished his first stint as a sheep farmer, all in the name of good mental health.
Last year Mr Cavill was behind the launch of a Men’s Watch program introduced in the Limestone Coast region to tackle its alarming rate of rural men’s suicide that has claimed several lives in recent years. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show rural men are the most common victims of suicide.
A new program is due in October and Mr Cavill also hopes to start a Women’s Watch later in the year.
At the same time he’s doing his bit personally to make sure fellow farmers are doing okay…even if that means temporarily trading allegiance from dairy cows to sheep.
Mr Cavill, who will share his experiences and outline the Men’s Watch program at the Grassland Society of Southern Australia’s annual conference in Naracoorte South Australia on July 22-23, has swapped farming duties with a neighbour for a few days.
In the wake of ongoing dry conditions in Mr Cavill’s Bool Lagoon region near Naracoorte, sheep farmers have been forced to feed their flocks for up to seven hours each day over the past eight months.
Apart from the cost, the time commitment is taking its toll.
“I’ve been watching them feed their sheep for weeks on end and felt to myself I bet these fellas are over it,” Mr Cavill said.
“I stopped a farmer on the road the other day and asked how he was going feeding the sheep. He said he just couldn’t do it for one more day he was that sick of it.
“After talking for a while he realised it was becoming a mental health issue. There are a lot like it. It wears them down. Those are the issues that get men depressed.”
Adopting the old maxim that a change is as good as a holiday, Mr Cavill and his fellow farmer came up with a plan. “We feed dairy cows every day so I said I’ll swap you. You show me how to do yours and I’ll show you how to do mine and we can both have a break for a few days each month till we don’t need to anymore.”
That “do something different” strategy is one of many Mr Cavill has used over the years to keep good mental health.
He will be sharing some of his strategies and outlining the Men’s Watch program at the Grassland Society conference where he will also talk about his successful pasture management system.
Mr Cavill said the first round of Men’s Watch programs had been a resounding success.
Four programs ran last year at Mt Gambier, Penola, Naracoorte and Millicent and attracted 121 men.
The programs are funded by local communities and designed to get men talking and being better able to identify signs of problems.
“Ultimately we want to measure it with a dropping rate in suicides but to get 121 men to have a better understanding of what goes on and why they feel like they do we consider to be very successful,” Mr Cavill said.
“It’s to help men to build strategies to overcome daily problems and longer term to give them confidence to see a doctor and get a resolution. If you don’t do anything about it, it’s just like an untreated cancer; it just spreads.”
“You find big tough farmers who come and won’t talk about anything but by the second night they’re opening up and talking about things they admit they wouldn’t normally talk to anyone about,” Mr Cavill said.
“Hopefully some of the men are also better equipped to identify others in trouble and be able to communicate with them.”
The program will be run annually in the lower south-east of South Australia, with four new sessions to be rolled out later this year.
Mr Cavill also hopes to start a Women’s Watch program to help women understand what men are going through.
He said the program aimed to reduce the stigma of having a mental health problem.
“Being mentally unwell is no different to having a sore leg,” he said. “Rural men are terrible at going to the doctor. We just want to tough it out and don’t want anyone to know.”
Mr Cavill, 53, had problems nearly 20 years ago. “I’ve always been a very positive person but I had a terrible upbringing that never affected me until I was about 35. Farming wise I’ve always been okay but if you spend a lot of years not dealing with stuff it affects your faming, your life and your family.

“I came to a point where I had to deal with it. In those days there wasn’t much help around so I had to deal with it myself and worked out a few things to get me through.”
Mr Cavill, who milks 600 cows on 400 hectares, will also outline his pasture management system during the Grassland Society conference.
“We’re trying to tell some sheep farmers how to grow more grass,” he joked. “Dairy farmers have to be good at it because we consume enormous amounts of grass.”
Mr Cavill said sowing the right species of ryegrass, using the right amount of urea fertiliser, choosing the right rotation length,
grazing times and stocking rates were key factors.
The Grassland Society of Southern Australia’s annual conference will feature visits to progressive farmers in the area and follow themes of soils, pastures, livestock, farm business and people, and marketing.
The complete program is available on the Grassland Society web site at www.grasslands.org.au.

Dear Editor
Re. Seniors on Tour (Star, June 9)
On behalf of the Colac people that went on Jessie Gardner’s girls and guys trip to Tasmania, I would like to say our accommodation at Launceston Country Club Villa was excellent, plus all meals were yummy.
Each day we went on different tours of
the countryside. Bus driver Adam gave us a running commentary of the area and where we were going.
All in all we had a fabulous trip. I also must mention Tony & Debbie from Spirit Travel Tours who traveled with us.
Regards, Marion Bartlett Colac”

As the End of Financial Year (EOFY) approaches, tax payers have the opportunity to make a tax deductible financial donation to a charity or organisation, before 30th June. This donation may then be claimed as part of your 2014/15 tax return. At this time of year many charities and large organisations are employing high cost companies to canvas the public via telephone calls, approaching consumers in shopping centres and via mail outs state or nation wide in the fight for your donation dollar.
As the End of Financial Year approaches, we ask you to consider supporting our local Hesse Rural Health Service, which includes our very own Hospital, Community Health, District Nursing Service, Chelsea and Hesse Aged Care Lodges and the Internationally Acclaimed Award Winning “Werruna” Dementia Unit.
Hesse Rural Health Service is our very own provider of exceptional health care, here in our local region and community.
The current Strategic Plan for Hesse RHS identifies the need for our hospital to provide palliative care for local families. To this end we have established a private and comfortable
room for patients to receive the highest quality care to meet their needs. The room allows families to privately and comfortably spend precious time with loved ones facing life threatening illness. Our wonderful caring and compassionate staff will also provide support and assistance to families of those in palliative care.
To complete the room, we need to furnish it with state of the art palliative equipment for clients and comfortable furnishings, including a sofa bed for family members to stay with their loved one. This is one of the ways your tax deductible donation could be used.
Please consider Hesse Rural Health in your EOFY donation.
Your donation however, large or small is very valued and appreciated. All donations greater than $2.00 are tax deductible.

The Moksha Project would like to welcome Dr Johanna Edwards to the team who brings Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture to Winchelsea and its surrounds.
Johanna first began her journey into the wonders of Chinese culture, tradition and history in 1998 when she embarked on a one year Chinese language study at RMIT University in Melbourne. At the completion of this course, she then commenced studying Chinese Medicine via a 4 year Health Sciences Degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine at the University of Technology in Sydney.
During her studies, Johanna was fortunate enough to spend one day a week over the course of 3.5 years undertaking a most valuable hands-on practical learning “apprenticeship” with the acclaimed acupuncturist Prof. Hoc Ku Huynh in Sydney's Chinatown. This special time with Dr Hoc enabled Johanna to gain insight into the true essence of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine as taught by an authentic Chinese Master. Johanna also completed post-graduate studies on Paediatric Chinese Medicine with Helen Gordon and has a special interest in
whole family health care.
Upon completion of her studies, Johanna journeyed to China where she worked in a hospital in Chan Chung, in order to further develop her experience and traditional Chinese perspective in diagnosis and treatment approaches.
Johanna’s goal is to assist her patients to maintain an optimal health status throughout all stages of life; from
early childhood to old age. Johanna offers a holistic approach encompassing techniques such as Acupuncture, Massage, Cupping, Moxibustion and Chinese Herbal Medicine, as well as Dietary and Lifestyle advice. Some examples of conditions she often works with include pregnancy care, back pain, fertility problems, insomnia, anxiety, depression, irritable bowel and other functional digestive disorders.
Johanna and her Husband Zac (Remedial Therapist, featured in our last article) are enjoying settling into their new home on the edge of the Otway Ranges, having moved here from Margaret River in WA. We hosted a struggling Corio club this week and posted some smashing wins on the netball court, with only the 17 & Under team falling short of a win. Our 13 & Under and C Grade Teams got their first wins, a fabulous reward for their hard work. All other grades had convincing wins with A Grade posting the highest score in the competition this year and perhaps in league history?

Having a very versatile team meant that we had several strong combinations to run, each as strong as the other. We started awesome winning the first 32 to 1. Our attack was crisp and accurate while our defence were tight. With a new combination we almost doubled this score in the second and were up 62-3 at the half. We pushed ahead in the third 35-0 but save the best for last scoring 42 - 0. A smashing win and a much needed percentage boost after last week.
Best: Leanna Hosking, Tayla Hardiman & Chloe Wilson

We started off a bit slow but an injury time talking to refocused the team and we went on to win the first 9 – 2. We tried to move the ball fast past Corio’s zone but we often missed the front option and gave the ball up. However, great defence from us gave us plenty of opportunities and we were up 27-12 at three quarter time. The last quarter could have been a flogging if penalties were applied to Corio enabling our shooters to convert, we put up 21 shots but only converted 13. Still a great win, with our versatile B Graders all getting a run.
Best Players: Bron Walker, Sam McKenzie and Sharna Aceri

Finally the win we have been waiting for, a much needed confidence boosting win. After a lot of injuries the team called upon Nellie Wilson to support the remaining uninjured C Graders in the goal circle. The superb ball delivery of Danielle Kuchenmeister and Amanda Carroll insured that Nellie, along with Amanda Partridge and Holly McFarlane were given plenty of opportunities to score. Whilst coach Alisha Adams did a great job of restricting Corio’s attack.
Best Players: Danielle Kuchenmeister, Amanda Carroll & Alisha Adams

A smashing win this week by our ever improving D Grade side. A great first quarter saw us score 19 to Corio’s 1. Unfortunately we couldn’t keep this pace for the remainder of the game but we kept Corio to a goal a quarter and pushed out our lead throughout the game. The good start allowed us to give some junior players a bit of a run with Beth Connors-Southall being a stand out in her first senior game with the club.
Best Players: Kim Allen, Ann Morgan and Beth Connors-Southall

Unfortunately the 17 & Under team had another tough job this week and couldn’t get over the line with a win. Corio proved too strong across all four quarters but again the girls showed some great passages of play. Caitlin Burgess did a great job in the goal circle when the ball was delivered to her, whilst Jessica Loone ran hard all game in the centre. Connie Royal once again provided many turnovers in defence but we struggled to make these count on the scoreboard.
Best Players: Caitlin Burgess, Jessica Loone and Connie Royal
15 & UnderWinchelsea 50 def Corio 5
A massive win again this week by our small but talented under 15 team. We started off flying being 15 -2 up at quarter time, a bit of a fade off occurred in the second but we regrouped and had a 28 – 0 second half. Emily Steed finally had an opportunity to shine this week, moving well and converting with accuracy in Goal shooter. Beth Connor-Southall was a wall in defence which Corio could not penetrate, whilst Claire Mawson’s accurate delivery in centre rewarded our great attacking moves.
Best Players: Emily Steed, Beth Connors-Southall and Claire Mawson
13 & UnderWinchelsea 16 def Corio 12
Our Under 13’s were pumped to have their first win this week coming of a really competitive game against Inverleigh last week. We took the lead from the start, breaking Corio’s first centre but in these low scoring junior games we had to keep giving everthing until the final whistle. Our attackers worked hard to attack the ball whilst our defenders gave 100% for the full game to pressure Corio. The score was 11 all ¾ time but our determinate was strong and we smashed the last quarter winning it 5 to 4. Great job girls, onwards and upwards!
Best Players: Amy Hobbs, Georgia Glynn and Maddie Kattwinkel

The Colts competed against Corio at home on Saturday. It was a tough match with the Winch boys having only 16 players for the day, due to injury & 3 of our boys being selected to play Seniors. It was a hard fought game with the new electronic scoreboard not reflecting the competitiveness of the game. Well done boys & next Saturday we head to Portarlington.
A huge thank you to Kurt Berg & Hayden Wilson for helping with the goal umpire & interchange roles, your help is greatly appreciated.
Each week the Colts need to provide a goal umpire, time keeper, interchange, team runner & water runners. If you are able to help out in anyway, could you please see Sue Lubcke or Paul Benson.
ReservesWinchelsea 25 . 17 - 167 Corio 5 . 1 - 31
Clear & really cold conditions saw the Reserves back on the winning list in a big way, the Blues were away from the 1st bounce & never really let Corio get their game going .Everyone had plenty of the ball as indicated by the score looking even better on the new scoreboard.

SENIORSWinchelsea 23 . 14 - 152 Corio 12 . 9 - 81
The Reserves had set the scene for a serious effort from the 2 o’clock side & the Senior team didn’t let them down. They worked hard in the !st quarter to set themselves up for a long awaited win, and took the game right up to Corio throughout the entire match, including the melee at the 3rd quarter break brought on by a clearly frustrated opposition side. The Club song was sung for the first time this season loud & proud !
What great opening scores to record on the first use of the Scoreboard.

This week the Blues travel to Geelong West on Sunday 28th of June, it would be great to see as many supporters there to see the boys have a crack at going back to back ! GO BLUES !
