Below: Stuart Fountain (Growing Winchelsea), Ken Daniells (Historical Society), Sarah Henderson, Nancy Mawson, Kevin Bennett (RSL) at Walk of Honour announcement

A new Walk of Honour will commemorate the 64 Australians who received the Victoria Cross during the First World War, including Winchelsea’s Albert Jacka.

Surf Coast mayor Cr Margot Smith said this will be the first time that all the VC recipients have been commemorated in one place. “Thanks must go to Surf Coast Shire, Winchelsea RSL, Winchelsea Historical Society, Winchelsea Primary School and the Working with Winchelsea group for working on this project to date.”

The Walk of Honour, to be located near the Barwon River in Winchelsea, will feature plaques recognising the 64 VC recipients, including Captain Albert Jacka who was born at a farm at Layard and was the first

Australian soldier to receive the award during WW I for actions at Gallipoli. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime.

Federal Member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, was in Winchelsea last Thursday to announce a $20,000 grant towards the project from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. The previous Victorian Government made a $20,000 contribution to the project and the Surf Coast Shire is contributing $5,000.

“It is wonderful that the Walk of Honour will allow Winchelsea residents and visitors to learn about the VC recipients’ valour in the face of the enemy,” she said. “Students will be able to use the memorial as a learning tool and it will become a permanent reminder of the sacrifice of those who served in the First World War.”

Dear Editor

As a resident of our great little town I am somewhat surprised at the amount of time it seems to be taking to repair the leaking water main in willis st ( princess highway). This has been leaking for around 3 weeks now. As those of us who drive the highway will have noted the left lane has been closed leaving a merge just west of the lh bend at Lennox st westbound. As a resident on the highway I have seen a number of bollards knocked over as people try to merge and a few near accidents . At the time of writing the water leak is flowing at a rate of about a litre a minute..I will let you do the math on how much water is flowing down the drain each day let alone into the soil under the roadway..I can only guess as to what damage may be occurring under the roadway itself . As a town we have put up with a lot of disruption due to roadworks.. the least the contractors who tendered for, carried out and finished sections of the highway can do is rectify any issues promptly. If this was happening in a main road in Melbourne it would have been attended to by now.

Unhappy local. Name Supplied

Stealing from the dead.

To the person who stole a mug from my sons grave. Unless you have someone you love resting in the cemetery, you would have no idea how much pain you have caused me, a mother, when a mug that has been on my son’s grave for many years is stolen. If you have any self respect, please put it back. It is blue with Jayson on it.

I received a phone call from Neville Mawson last Friday afternoon asking me to attend at his old dairy. He said he had something that was difficult to believe.

The previous weekend they had a BBQ. They cleaned up the cooking oil etc from the BBQ with 3 “chux” wipes scrunched up. The wipes were saturated with the cooking oil and were then placed down onto the concrete up against the shed.

Neville on the Friday (6 days later) could smell something like an oil fire and investigated. Lying next to the shed was the smoldering blackened wipes.

After taking photo’s we opened the wipes and flames emitted from the wipes.

The area by the shed was sheltered and in direct sunlight and with Friday being very hot the material spontaneously combusted.

We were very happy that there was no long dry grass in the area.

Goes to show that you can never be too careful where oils and extreme heat are concerned.

Don Smith Wurdale CFA Captain.

VicRoads advises that road works will recommence at various locations along the Great Ocean Road during February.

Road repairs, including asphalting and resurfacing work, will begin later this month following the end of the holiday season to reduce inconvenience to summer crowds and road users.

Works during February: Vegetation trimming

VicRoads’ contractors will continue to trim existing and remove dead vegetation and remove hazardous trees between:

• Torquay and Anglesea

• Fairhaven and past Lorne to the St George River

• Wye River and Grey River

• Lavers Hill to La Trobe Bushland Reserve

• Old Peterborough Rd to Radfords Road.

Reduced speeds will apply in the area contractors are working. Drivers should expect minor delays, be aware of workers close to the road and look out for fallen vegetation debris.

CFA Safety Message

Amazing but true, lesson learnt.

What Value a Life? From front page.

Winchelsea & Anglesea Community Bank Branches have a proven record of taking care of their communities. Their contribution to local Community Groups and Clubs, to help fulfill their wish lists has exceeded the $1mill mark.

The latest contribution is the installation of a cabinet containing a Defib Unit on the external front wall of the Winchelsea Branch providing easy access in the case of an emergency. “The cabinet has an alarm and is monitored 24/7 by our surveillance camera’s.” Branch Manager Rosemary Gillett said, “As far as the Community Bank Company is concerned though, the thought of one life being saved, far outweighs the risks associated with the cabinet and defibrillator unit being located outside”.

Jeremy Morris, Senior Manager of both Branches, spoke of the contribution that has been made in the way of Defibrillator Units. “We have provided 9 Defib Units for the schools within our catchment area, along with partnering with some of our CFA groups to assist them with funds to purchase Defib units”.

Jeremy also spoke about the role the whole Community can play in helping the Community Bank continue to support our communities. “It’s simple really; you just need to bank with our Branches! Bendigo Bank offers excellent products and specialists in every area of banking, both for personal and business, including Agribusiness. So, by banking with us, you are directly responsible for helping us, help this Community”.

If you would like further information on how you can help your community, you can either call in to Winchelsea Community Bank Branch or phone 52 673189 and speak to one of our friendly staff.

Committee MeetingOur next Committee Meeting will be

held at the club rooms on Wednesday 18th February 2015 at 11am. This will be followed by a “Bring & Share” lunch and then at 1pm our usual afternoon of games and fun.

Limerick Of The WeekThere was an anthologist who

Decided that nothing’s taboo

Her words are so rude

Her verses so lewd

I’m sure they’ll appeal to you

When a bush or grass fire threatens the safest place by far is not to be where the fire is. Even driving on days of extreme fire weather is dangerous

Important decisions to make are:

• when you will leave

• where you will go

• how you will get there

• when you will return

• what will you do if you cannot leave,

For the Winchelsea area it was suggested the best place to arrive early and sit out days of extreme fire danger is the Winchelsea Senior Citizens Centre. This proposal has been agreed to and on these days the Senior Cits will open from 9AM.

Cats and small dogs in carry baskets are acceptable, Dogs can also be housed in the enclosure attached to the Lions Club paper depot. A sail will be used to provide shade. To use this enclosure your dog must have a mat, be on a lead and have a drinking bowl.

People who use these facilities will need to be completely self-sufficient. The building’s coffee making facilities etc will be available.

To make the plan operational, volunteer coordinators will be needed. The role of these coordinators is make people welcome, provide information if possible and to liaise with the Winch CFA if needed. It is planned to have enough coordinators so that they would be on duty for perhaps

an hour, 1 or 2 days a year. If you are prepared to be a coordinator contact Mick O’Mara, 52672295

The long range forecast indicates next Saturday may be an extreme day.

Don’t wait until you can see this!

When did you start trading?

September 3rd 2014

Why did you decide to start your business?

I have always wanted my own business, so when Daniel and I heard about the Salon being for sale we decided it was the right time to start. We looked at other options in Geelong and surrounding areas but chose Winchelsea because we felt there was not only more potential in a growing town but also a challenge to offer something different for the town the way we feel a Salon should be for our clients.

What were some challenges you encountered?

Buying a business for the first time was a challenge in itself, there was so much to think about, and we definitely didn’t expect it to be that hard. The next hurdle was planning the renovation while trying to trade. Daniel worked on the renovation whenever he could as well as working full time.

What do you wish you’d known before you started?

How much work the renovation would be, it was more time consuming than we expected.

How many employees do you have?

I currently work the salon by myself but hope that in the near future we can start training a junior stylist. We also hope to have our beauty room open for business soon.

What type of education helped you to run your own business?

Help from our Accountant, previous management experience and working within busy salons.

The best thing about Winchelsea.

The sense of community, I truly enjoy the time I spend with my clients. Everyone is so friendly and patient.

One thing you would like to see in Winchelsea?

We would like to see more parking and variety in infrastructure.

Help us Help you

Walk in clients are welcome at the Salon, however due to an increasing number of clients, the chances of a last minute appointment are decreasing. As there is currently only one hairdresser available, sometimes I can’t make it to the phone but please leave a message and I’ll call you back as soon as possible. I also have a cancelation list if I can’t fit you in

at your preferred time. For Clients that do have appointments please endeavour to give at least 24 hours’ notice if your unable to attend. This gives me the chance to fill the appointment and keep the Salon running smoothly. We understand that life gets busy and sometimes you can forget about your appointment… We now have SMS reminders to help with this, all you have to do is provide a mobile phone number when you book.

A note to Parents

Children are most welcome, but unfortunately we have already received damages to our new equipment, if I could please remind parents of the importance of watching children carefully while in the salon. We know kids will be kids, and there’s no harm in a bit of fun but climbing and jumping on chairs or hanging from the glass shelves won’t be allowed, and please don’t be offending if I ask children to behave. This is not only for the maintenance of the Salon but for the children’s safety, there are sharp and hot objects, glass and chemicals. We have spent a lot of money and time on the renovation for the benefit of our clients and would be extremely grateful if parents could help us with this.

Please Write For The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community. Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the weekly deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

Firebombing aircraft have arrived ahead of trucks at 15 fires this season under a new system which sees planes and helicopters automatically dispatched to grass or bush fires on high risk days.

In the past, aircraft in Victoria could only be called in to a fire once ground crews had arrived.

Fire agencies estimate that aircraft are arriving to fires around 20 minutes earlier under the new system – known as ‘pre-determined dispatch’; triggered on 51 occasions so far this season.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Chief Fire Officer Alan Goodwin said the idea behind the pre-determined system was to get aircraft in the sky as quickly as possible to provide strong first attack and support firefighters on the ground.

“So far this season we’ve seen a number of fires with serious potential to impact communities that were pulled up and contained due to the work of aircraft at that critical early stage,” Mr Goodwin said.

CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said it was important to get the message out to landholders with private firefighting equipment that aircraft might be arriving before trucks.

“Our firefighters are briefed about coordinating their attack on the fire with aircraft, but we are concerned that landowners tackling fires on their own properties might not know to move away when an aircraft is approaching to drop a load of water or retardant.

“Many farmers are fully equipped to fight fires; indeed it is a legislated requirement that landowners take reasonable steps to stop the spread of unplanned fire on their property.

“The difference is now there might be aircraft circling ahead rather than a fire truck approaching and directing them.

“Once aircraft are moving in the safest thing to do is to move away from the fire’s edge, so that pilots can get on with the job.”

Mr Ferguson said that pilots must ensure that an area is completely clear of people before making a drop. “Pilots will always

endeavour to do a dummy run first where they fly the path they are going to take,” he said.

“Most are equipped with an audible siren that will sound as they are coming in on their actual run as a final advice to anyone in the vicinity.”

A varied fleet of 20 planes and helicopters is available for dispatch under the pre-determined system. Strategically based at 15 different locations around Victoria, each aircraft can potentially be dispatched anywhere in the State based on need.

Fast facts – Victoria’s fleet• Aircraft are used to support on-ground

firefighters and are a joint resource among fire agencies.

• Victoria’s fleet of 46 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters can be moved around the state to where they are needed depending on fire activity

• A range of different types of aircraft provide maximum flexibility for Victoria’s varied terrain – the make-up of our fleet has been carefully designed through the national Fire and Emergency Aviation Capability Management Framework.

Local Deans Marsh residents are gearing up for the annual Deans Marsh Festival to be held on Sunday 22nd March 2015.

2014 saw over 700 community members exceed expectation with a giant patchwork of flags. This years community arts project involves individuals creating small weave works, culminating in a giant tapestry.

The project involves sending out weaving packs to households in the Deans Marsh area. Each pack includes instructions on how to create a small weave to become a part of a giant display at the 2015 festival. Packs will also be available from the Deans Marsh and Birregurra General Stores, or you can contact festival organisers to arrange postage.

Additionally, for enthusiasts the Festival will be running free weaving workshops in the weeks leading up to the Festival.

Festival organisers, the Deans Marsh Community Cottage are excited to partner with the Bendigo Bank to deliver the weaving project. Additional sponsorship from businesses such as King Parrot Cottages, Occasions Event Hire and Cape Otway Lightstation are also greatly appreciated.

Each year the festival welcomes thousands of visitors to enjoy great live music, street performers, Otway food and wine and a unique artisans craft market. There are a range of kids activities (Boxology is back!), local harvest demonstrations and crowd favourites the Deans Marsh Gift & dog jump.

Organisers are still on the lookout for craftspeople, artists and food producers. For more information about sponsorship, the weaving project, stalls or festival please visit deansmarshfestival.com.au or contact 5236 3388.

Sporting Clubs

Looking for some publicity for your club? Deadline for week day results is Fridays at 4:00pm and weekend

results Sundays at 4:00pm. Email to [email protected]

Dear Editor,

I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to those awe-inspiring people in power down at the Surf Coast Shire offices that have the audacity to shut down the most successful sporting club in Winchelsea, and possibly the Surf Cost Shire. Even against the advice of their own planning advisers (is this, I wonder, because they are working to their own agenda once again?).

I’m talking about the Winchelsea Gun Club and the Local, State, National, Inter National and Olympic Shooters that this Club has produced since the Club was reopened in the mid 70’s.

If the above rational is insufficient reason to maintain the extremely respected and successful club; I cannot count the number of foxes (in excess of 15,000) and other vermin animals that club members have humanely destroyed - all at no cost to the farmers. This accomplishment also benefited State Government controlled forests and parks and whose alternative to this civilized control is to now use slow acting poison baits that cause several hours of terrible suffering before death. Simultaneously also killing birds and other native and domestic animal populations which consume these baits and then also suffer this same horrific, slow acting death!

I believe that the writing was on the wall when this club wasn’t invited to participate in the new sporting hub that the same Surf Coast Shire saw fit to spend all that money on and heaven forbid the footy and netball clubs etc. deserve all that they can get

In closing I’m calling on the same Surf Coast Shire Councillor’s that closed our ground to act on their promise and “FIND” us another location to use and perhaps also show us a little support instead of trying to milk us dry both physically and financially

Shade is such a valuable element in any garden in summer. It allows us to enjoy outdoor living even on hot days and protects some of our plants from drying heat. This month I am reflecting on how to make the most of shade in the garden and how to utilise summer observations to help you plan for shade.

Shade can be from trees, shrubs, buildings, garden structures, umbrellas and even from low plants which shade the soil. Summer is the very best time to look at where existing shade is in your garden at different times of the day and to think about how to utilise it. Shade helps to cool the temperature of the garden. It can provide us with enticing places to enjoy on summer days.

Recently I started planning and planting a new garden which has a large eucalypt growing in a sloped lawn, about 16 metres from the house. This tree provides a wide sweep of summer shade, which moves from the west side of the tree in the morning to the east side of the tree in the afternoon. In my initial vision, I saw a small table and two chairs close to the trunk of the tree. By looking at where the shade actually fell over the length of a day, and particularly at mealtimes, I realised that I had a much broader choice of where to place my furniture. I started to think on a larger scale and decided to create a wide level terrace with the tree as the focal point, echoing the shade pattern to some extent and defining the area as somewhere special. The drop at the edge of the terrace is only about 60 cm and will be a sloped garden a metre or so wide. The garden is far enough away from the tree for plants to receive light and it acts like a raised bed above the level of the tree roots.

Sitting on the terrace and observing it from the areas around is helping me to work out how this space relates to the rest of the garden. I need some height to define the edge, maybe some stumps to sit on or a little hedge, also some rustic steps, tough plants that mostly flower in summer and furniture that I can move around. I have gone from a table under a tree to a cool and lovely summer room big enough for a family banquet!

Not every shady spot needs to be on such a grand scale – a bench tucked in under the apricot tree is a summer haven in our nursery. Undercutting a large shrub can create a living pergola – just the spot for a single chair and a little statue. A friend has used shade cloth to create a fernery between the east side of her house and the tall paling fence – a cool and private place where she relaxes with a book on a banana lounge. She talks of adding a water feature – water trickling down to a basin below or some such. She seeks out shade loving plants and keeps the water up to them – possible in this small and treasured area but impossible in the garden at large.

Some deciduous plants are particularly valuable for providing summer shade in our area. Losing their leaves means that they enable us to have winter sun as well. Fruiting and ornamental grapes grow quickly and cover a framework in two or three years. Most also provide stunning autumn displays. Small trees, such as crab apples and crepe myrtles, suit smaller spots while trees such as ornamental pears, maples, some oaks and the Chinese pistachio can create wonderful dense shade for larger areas. Fruit trees can double as shade trees – select an early fruiting variety so that you can enjoy the crop and then take the net off to use the shade. If you are not too stressed about sharing with the birds, try a Nashi Pear for the lovely copper new leaves, large white flowers, fruit and autumn display.

Shading the ground with shrubs and ground covers which act as living mulch is a good water conservation technique. So also is utilising arid area and drought tolerant plants to create shade protection from the harsh afternoon western sun. Observing which plants tolerate hot conditions and which ones look stressed, as well as where your summer shade lines fall, may inspire you to change your garden a little. It will help you to understand why ‘nothing grows there’ or why a plant that grows well in one spot in your garden can’t cope in another. Arm yourself with information, give the sun loving plants full sun and coddle the others with some afternoon or all day shade in summer.

It is fun to plan your own shady oasis to suit you and the people and pets that share your garden. Consider it a wonderful

yet practical indulgence and look for little touches that will make you smile when you go there – a wind chime, a hanging basket, a pot of pansies, a clay mould of your child’s hand. Without a doubt, hot weather is definitely the time to think of and plan for shade.

If you would like to have a copy of any of the garden notes that I have written, drop in at the Garden Gate of Inverleigh nursery, 77 Dundas St Inverleigh (the Winchelsea Road) or look in the Articles section on our webpage.

Last Sunday Leigh Moneghetti and his 5 piece band held the first of their afternoon dances for 2015 at the Globe Theatre. The dance commenced at 1.00pm and concluded at 4.30pm and was attended by over 70 dancers who had travelled from as far away as Ballarat, Beaufort, Colac, Cobden, Geelong, Miners Rest and the Winchelsea District.

We also had the pleasure of several residents from Hesse Rural Health Aged Care facilities and their carers Mel and Jenny attending. It was wonderful to see

the hands clapping, toes tapping and these inspirational people joining in and singing along to the old time dance music. These senior members of our community are a great example to us all.

Leigh and his band will be holding a further 2 Sunday afternoon dances this year on 3rd May and the 30th August. Please note your calendars and come along and join in the fun, enjoy the great music and good company.
