2 NEWS 12 DECEMBER 2014

The year 2014 as nature will dictate, had its own achievements and challengesfor different families and Institutions. For others, it was a good year full ofachievements and blessings, for others it was a year full of misfortunes and

miseries. I take this opportunity to congratulate those who succeeded in their variousendeavors such as business, academic, family and further encourage them toachieve more going forward into the New Year.

I equally take this opportunity to encourage those who struggled to actualize theirdreams and aspirations under this imminent year. We sent comforting words to thosewho lost their love ones in 2014; we say your loss is our loss. Above all, the year2014 will be remembered in the annals of history as the year South Africacommemorated the first anniversary of the passing of its greatest sons and father ofthe nation first democratically elected president of South Africa Mr Nelson RolihlahlaMandela. It is equally heartening to see our social partners such as traditionalleaders, business chambers, civil society etc, and steadfastly working hand in handwith government to address developmental issues. We value such partnershipcognizant of the fact that development needs participation of all social partners.

We notice with sadness the ongoing loss of lives on our roads. And our messageis that - one life is one too many. We appeal to road users to obey and observe all therules of the road including speed limits. Equally disturbing is the number of incidenceof violence unleashed by people on each other during festive. It appears the maincause of this anomaly is alcohol abuse. We call upon our people to respect life andtreat each other with respect, comradeship and love. We say no to senselessmurders, assaults and violence within our communities.

We call on parents and shebeen/tavern owners to be very strict on alcohol sale tochildren under age of 18. Let us protect our youth and guide them to a bright futurefull of hope and possibilities. On that note, we once more wish our matriculates bestof luck with their much awaited 2014 final results. We are confident they will surpassthe much published success of 2013 and achieve the 80% earmarked for theLimpopo Province. The district and its local municipalities have established bursaryfunds, needy and deserving learners are encouraged to visit municipal offices toapply.

Our District’s emergency hotline 0800 33 00 22 is readily available 24/7. Duringthis festive season, all of us who can, and are able to, are compelled to lend a handto those individuals and families that are unable to support themselves, and to showcompassion to children that do not have clothes, something to eat or a simple gift tobring a smile to their little faces.

On behalf of the District Municipality, I Cllr Mogobo DavidMagabe, the Executive Mayor, wish you a Merry Christmas andProsperous New Year. Do not Drink and Drive & Arrive Alive!

Executive Mayor’sChristmas message

The festive season is one of the special times when family, friends and colleaguesget a chance to come together and reunite after been apart to different places, suchas either to workplaces, school etc.

The most important thing is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the endingof the year. As the station commander of Leboeng SAPS I would like to wish all thepeople a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

During this festive season as the Police we will not tolerate any criminal activitiesin our policing precinct. People who engage in criminal element will face the law. Wefurther advice our communities not to walk alone during the night especially ladiesbecause they sometimes become the victims of crimes.

We are going to monitor the taverns within our policing area that they operatewithin the prescribed times and comply with the liquor act. We are going to intensifyour patrols and high police visibility within our policing area to make sure that the

people who are in or visited our policing area feel safe and are indeed safe.

The year of Heroes at Tubatse Chrome

Tubatse Chrome, one of the Samancor ChromeSmelting Operations situated in Steelpoort,Limpopo has undertaken a commitment of choiceto preserve the environment by harvesting thewaste heat from the smelting operations andgenerate electricity. The company still prides itselfwith the production of charge chrome (corebusiness) that enables the creation of a strong, clean and safe stainless steel that adds lastingvalue for a brighter future, in a true sense thatsupports sustainability initiatives. The Green Economy Project was approved early2011 and the design work commenced promptly. The civil construction work commenced late 2012and the mechanical assemblies continued untilMay 2014. A total of six Heat Recovery SteamGenerators (HRSGs) were built with a totalcapacity of 146t/h of steam and 2 x 15MW Turbo-Generator units. To further preserve theenvironment in terms of water consumption,Tubatse opted for Air Cooled Condensers withfrequency controls for efficient operation. Theplant has its own Reverse Osmosis (RO) watertreatment plant which feeds from treated waterpumped through boreholes and plant recycle tofurther reduce ground water contaminationsfrom our operations. The plant has capacity to generate 216GWh ofpower per annum with a saving of approximately126 000t of coal, reducing the carbon footprintby approximately 200 000t CO

2e per annum.

There is no generation of extra waste gas, slag, dust or other harmful gases. These aspectstogether with the reduced dust to the gashandling plant render the project compliant to

the requirements of the Clean DevelopmentMechanism (CDM): Saving energy; reduced blowdown; high technology; good economic efficiency;low energy consumption; low pollution and fullexertion of the advantage of human resourcesThe commissioning of the plant commencedFebruary 2014, with two boilers located at theWest Plant. The rest of the 4 boilers werecommissioned in June 2014. Turbine 1 wassynchronised for the 1st time on 23 March 2014and generated a maximum of 16.5MW (Peak) on18 September 2014!! Turbine 2 was synchronisedon 25 June 2014 and generated a maximum of15.3MW (Peak) on 28 November 2014. Theoptimisation processes are underway to ensure wereach our milestone of 30MW continuousgeneration. The project has had a significant impact in thesocial challenges of the Greater Tubatsecommunity. Over 20 individuals were trained inbasic skills in various disciplines including fitting, electrical, welding etc. Over 50% of the capitalspent on the project was spent locally with ad hocwork given to the local Greater Tubatsecontractors. The project has resulted in permanentemployment of 35 personnel including crafts, operators and supervisors. We take pride in leading the ferrochrome industryin the waste heat recovery projects to generateelectricity. It is a STRIDE from the commitment ofsustainable development and positioning of ourbusiness to be technologically competitive in ourprocesses.(Article: Michael Ngobeni, Ops Manager (PGP/PSP/WTP)

Helping rural communitiesimprove access to water

Christmas came early for the community of Kgautswane andsurrounding villages. They were donated more than 200 watertanks and hippo rollers with the aim to alleviate the daily struggleof carrying water on their heads. The project is internationally recognised and is linked to NelsonMandela who during his tenure wholly supported it. He onceappealed all organisations to support the project as it positivelychanging the lives of millions of South Africans.According to Grant Gibbs who is the executive director of theproject, they mostly help women and children as they are theones who endure the burden of transporting water. “The HippoRoller enable them to transport more water, more easily andin less time from water points that are often located far fromtheir homes. We achieved this by partnering with like –mindedorganisations and individuals who feel compelled to share theirwealth with poorer communities” he said.Women, children and elderly people are mostly the ones forcedto fetch and carry water to their homes. Water points are oftenabout 1 - 10 km away. It is time consuming to collect waterrequiring multiple trips. Water is heavy and carrying water onthe head can cause neck and spinal injuries.

The Water Roller is the solution to these as it allows a person to collect5 times more water than a single bucket by simply rolling it along theground (pulling or pushing it).The Hippo Water Roller is effective in the following;Carries 90 litres of water; Last longer (5 to 7 years); Durable-designedto use in tough terrains; Weight of water is borne on the ground anddistributed over a wide rolling surface; The wide rolling surface helpscompact soil to minimise erosion unlike narrow wheelbarrows; Improveshygiene and health; Empower women and children; More time toattending school for better education. The 202 water rollers and tanks were distributed through theKgautswane Thusong Service Centre and received by Clara Masingawho is the centre managerand founder of the centre. She encouraged thecommunity to look after thewater tankers and not misusethem.(Article and photographs:Doc Marebane)
