A history of Phelo Pele health carePhelo Pele Health Care, was founded in 2003 and had its first project Nolo coffee shop in 2005 atMaphuthadichaba in Burgersfort. Due to lack of business experience, capital and knowledge of

the market we had to close Shop eight months later.

We took a 13 Months break from Business then opened our first pharmacy (Phelo Pele

Pharmacy) at Khadima centre, Burgersfort in April 2007.

In 2008 Phelo Pele Lydenburg Pharmacy was launched. It was aimed at taking care of health

need of our African community in that area.

In the same year our social responsibility wing Phelo Pele foundation was founded. Thefoundation worked with most organizations including Lovelife, Life line, Aurum institute, local

home based care groups and other organizations.

We had our first annual Phelo Pele family Health day in 2009 which gives us a platform tointeract with our communities and allows us educate our people regarding health matters. Thefoundation will in 2012 address other challenging issues focusing mostly on youth. Watch this

space.

In 2009 November we opened door to our first Kitchen Design and manufacturing businessPhelo Wood and Interior. This was our most adventurous investment. I have to say that this

excersise was very costly and keeping us on our toes for the whole of 2010.

In 2011 we were able to achieve most of our goals. We were able to open doors to two newpharmacies, Phelo Pele Platinum Pharmacy, within this pharmacy there is Phelo Primary Healthcare clinic here in Burgersfort at Platinum place next to the new ABSA bank, and Phelo PeleModjadji Pharmacy.

We like to thank our clients and partners for these achievements.

On World Aids Day 2011 the Thorburn message, in line with the international theme is clear– Getting to Zero.

Every year for the past 6 years World Aids Day is a special day on the Thorburncalendar and many efforts were made to spread the word that the spread of the HIV Aidsdisease is pandemic.

This year is something different and the spread of the message – Getting to Zero –received more internal focus in Thorburn. The week preceding World Aids Day, awarenessposters with the theme ‘Getting to Zero’ were distributed to contracted sites. Awarenessbadges and ribbons were made and distributed, an awareness letter was send to staff andstaff have been greeted with a World Aids Day sms on 1 December 06:00.

Today HIV Aids awareness shopping bags will be handed out in rural communities and180 children from an Eerstegeluk Home Care Center will receive a small gift from ThorburnSecurity Solutions.

The Safety Topic for World Aids Day in Thorburn Security is : Getting to Zero , Zeroinfections, Zero discriminations and Zero Aids related deaths.

Thorburn says the above is part of the little the company can do considering thefollowing shocking statistics:

According to reports globally an estimated 33.3 million people have HIV. More than 25million people have died from the virus between 1981 and 2007, making it one of the mostdestructive pandemics in history. In South Africa, 5.6 million people are living with HIV, thehighest number in the world.

Mr Norman Ngobeni said: “ When you livein a province like Limpopo most peoplechoose to ignore it. The coastal provincesare probably more affected by globalwarming. Yes, I am an environmentallyconscious person. We make sure that weclean the environment where we work andif Burgersfort had one, my companywould probably have made use ofrecycling. In the day-to-day living wehowever forget about climate change”.

Mr Matome Maloto said: “Me, yes I amenvironmentally conscious, but I don’t doanything - it is too expensive. Like solargeysers. I tried to get one, but they toldme the only supplier is in Cape Town andit will cost me R40 000. So I’ve installed anormal geyser when I build my house”.

Mr Michael Mnisi said: “We do care aboutthe things they talk about at COP-17, butpeople don’t have much knowledge whatCOP-17 is about. I think it is veryimportant to give people workshops tohelp them understand what the talks atCOP-17 are about. Yes, I consider climatechange etc. when I buy things. We have tothink about environmentally friendly carsetc. Here in Burgersfort are some carsthat are terrible. It is just a ball of smokewhen they drive. Everyone’s smallcontribution to prevent global warmingwill help”.

Me. By haar isMarius.

Mr Tumie Maduana said: “Climate changematters to me. We have to takeprecautions, especially regarding thesmoke and gases in our miningenvironment. I am a seriouslyenvironmentally conscious person”.

Mnr Marius Truter sê: “Ek weet nie eensvan COP-17 nie. Uitlaatgasse ens. wat dieomgewing beskadig tel wel vir my wantek is nogal omgewingsbewus”.

Right: Mr Vincent Nhleko said: “No, Idon’t even think about COP-17 or climatechange. The guys who tell others aboutthat just want to make money throughplanting things in other people’s minds”.

By hom is Waldu Kotzé.

Mnr. Victor Fourie sê: “Ek geen nie regtigom oor COP17 of klimaatsveranderingnie”.

This week the national news was filled withreports from COP-17. COP-17 is theseventeenth conference of the parties to theUnited Nations Framework Convention onClimate Change. The conference is taking place in Durbanand will come to an end tomorrow, 3December 2011.According to reports released at theconference “the global combined sea surfaceand land surface air temperature for 2011(January - October) was about 0,41°C abovethe 1961-99 annual average”.This year we’ve experience the onset of LaNina, the counterpart of El Nino. La Nina ischaracterised by cooler sea surfacetemperatures and is “closely associatedwith the drought in east Africa, islands in thecentral equatorial Pacific and the southernUS, and flooding in southern Africa, easternAustralia and southern Asia”.Although the world’s climate has alwaysbeen changing, Prof Bob Scholes of theCouncil for Scientific and IndustrialResearch said: “There is no doubtwhatsoever that the world’s climate ischanging. The question is whether the

change is human-induced”. Mr JerryLengoasa from the World MeteorologicalOrganisation said: “Urgent action is neededto avert worse climate change scenarios inthe next few decades”.We asked readers what they knew aboutwhat is happening at COP-17 and how theyfeel about climate change.

It is hard to believe that another year is coming to anend. It is a relief to those for whom our year end breakcan’t come fast enough, and I countmyself among them, but may strike panic in those whowonder how they can possibly finish everything they needto get done by the end of this year. I count myself amongthose, too. In either case, I hope you will be able to lookback on 2011 as a year during which you reached yourgoals forprofessional and personal success. As the year comes to an end I would like to take a fewmoments to thank you for your contribution to thecompany during 2011.The challenges facing ECM in 2012 will be even greater, and the opportunities before us even more rewarding. The key challenges I see are reaching the targets wehave set for ourselves while maintaining flexibility toeffectively deal with an ever-changing businessenvironment, enhancing both capital and operating costefficiencies, and making no compromise on safety andthe environment.Continuing to develop our workforce for the future willremain a key priority for all of us with everyone assuminga greater responsibility for his or her own self-development.Through your efforts and with the continued support ofyour families, I am confident that in the coming year wewill be able to further consolidate our leadership role inthe global chrome market.

A night in the oceanwith pirates at your sideOn 19 November 2011, ECM hosted theannual Year End Function for C1 and upemployees. The theme for this year was Pirates vsUnder the Sea.The Year end committee started withpreparations for the function well inadvance, but due to the sudden changein weather, had to redo the décor twicein one week. The last time was two hours before thestart of the function. Never say thatpersistence does not pay.Guests arrived dressed as all types of

characters. From Jack Sparrow to LadyLuck of the Sea. Jaco Labuschagneentertained the crowd with his versatilerepertoire of music. He even gave thelocal “idols” at heart a chance to showtheir talents. The GM, Mr. Emile Britz thankedeverybody for their support andcommitment during the past year.We would like to thank everybodyinvolved in the arrangements for thefunction and the Winterveld Rec clubfor the excellent food that was served.

Helping to re-build storm

battered lives

Left: Ms Doreen Masha and her family were of thefamilies who benefitted from the food parcelsdelivered by Dwarsrivier Mine. They are 13 familymembers and only 2 are employed. They say the stormwas terrible and they were very scared.“We are all very happy about the food. Over the week-end Booysendal brought food that was cooked at theschool, and on Monday Dwarsrivier brought us theparcels that helped a lot. Thank you to everyone”.

Left: Ms Rachel Masha and her family of 9 people nowtake refuge in the tent Dwarsrivier Mine brought astemporary shelter. She says: “We were kneeling over the babies to keepthe rain and hail from falling on them when the stormblew our house away. Now thanks to the tent we aresafe when it rains”. She is very worried about how they

will rebuild her home as there is no moneyfor building material.

Left: The Mosotho familiy are six people living inside the tent.Mr Mosotho is blind and still gets emotional when he speaks ofthe storm. “We just heard this loud noise and off the roof andwalls of the house went. Then the hail came. We found two ofthe corrugated iron sheets and an old mattress so we all sat onit and clung to the corrugated iron sheets to keep the rain away,”he said. He now complains about earproblems after being in the rain that night.“The food, everything Dwarsrivier brought helped us very much. The mealie meal (maize) and soup, everything helped and wasgood”. When asked aboutrebuilding their home hesaid: “We will fix it, but weare now trying to save a fewcents to buy buildingmaterial”.

Left: Ms Dorothy Masha sits nextto one of the collapsed walls of herhome. Her family received a foodparcel and a tent from DwarsrivierMine. Now seven people aresleeping in the tent.“The food definitely helped us andthe tent is now our bedroom,” shesaid. She explained that all the foodthey had washed away with therain. “There was no mealie meal, everything was wet. Now we stillstruggle with the electricity. Wethank Dwarsrivier for everything”.

Above: Ms Linah Monoge’s home wasalso struck during the storm. They arefive people now living inside one of thetents Dwarsrivier Mine delivered astemporary housing after the storm. “I wasso surprised and happy for Dwarsrivierafter we nearly died that night. I thankGod and Dwarsrivier for helping us,” shesaid. She is also concerned about howthey will rebuild their home as the funds

for building material is very limited.

When driving through Kalkfontein, tents erected between building debrisis a common sight. Dwarsrivier Mine delivered these tents as temporaryshelter to help the community after a storm damaged and destroyed manyhomes. A total of 281 houses were damaged. Dwarsrivier also deliveredfood parcels to the families who lost everything in the storm. A week afterthe delivery their stories still continue.
