In line with Samancor’s innovative thinking, the company came up with Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency initiatives. This will save energy and preserve the environment. In the production of Chrome from the six submerged arc furnaces at Tubatse, about 996 000Nm3/h fume gas at 550°C is lost to the atmosphere with an equivalent of 42MVA of energy. The energy can be equated to 126 kt of coal used to produce electricity. Tubatse Chrome has come up with an innovative solution by building a power plant which will recover some of the lost heat energy from the furnaces and converting it into electric power. The selected technology also preserves the use of water. Construction on the power plant is currently in progress and can be seen from the R555 road passing the Tubatse Chrome plant. It is planned that Tubatse Chrome will be able to produce their own clean energy by late next year. The project will enable Tubatse to remain technologically competitive, reduce the Tubatse energy consumption by 18,76%, lay a solid foundation for sustainable development of the business, reduce the carbon footprint by over 200 000tCO 2 per annum and create approximately 30 sustainable employment opportunities. At the start of the project the company said: “We live the dream to make power affordable such that only the rich can afford to buy candles”. Tubatse places great value on making a difference in thelives of local communities. In order to uplift communities, one has to start at grassroots level. To this effect, Tubatse Chrome has beensponsoring Kohin Coaches at Maelebe Primary School atTukakgomo and Kgahlanong Secondary School in Ga-Mapodile Township for the past two years. Both of theseschools are supplied with full time youth coaches whohelp identify and support vulnerable children inTukakgomo. Speaking to the principals and coaches atthe two schools, it is evident that many children inEerstegeluk are orphaned or without parental support dueto AIDS or due to migrant workers who has multiplefamilies in different towns. Joel Nkoana, principal at Maelebe Primary, says “thecoaches have an important role to play in addressing socialissues that emerge in the households of their schoolchildren”. Their coach, Lifi Thlaka, which is also a pastor, motivates and uplifts teaching personnel as well as schoolchildren. When problems have been defined, he workswith children and their families or caretakers to refer themto social workers or the police when called for. He alsouses corporate sponsors and churches where families arein dire need of basic supplies such as food and clothes. Lifi said he was especially happy with the results of thepregnancy awareness day that was held in February. Principal Nkoana says they can measure the success ofthe program through the fact that they do not have anymore drop outs. Children now realise the importance ofgoing to school and building a future for themselves. Theyare planning a Parent Enlightening workshop on the 14th ofApril to educate learners and parents on HIV/AIDS.Principal Lawrence Phoku at Kgahlanong Secondary schoolindicated that teen pregnancies and malnutrition are hugeconcerns. He said that “the school provides daily mealsto the children”, he also added that they are very excitedabout their newly appointed coach Charmaine Lenyatsawho has already started to make a difference. Charmainestarted in January this year, she says her biggest successhas been working with children who abuses drugs, andhelping them to recover from their addiction.

Anglo American will build 23 000 houses for its South Africanemployees, convert remaining hostel accommodation to single-person occupancy by 2014 and openly discuss how the migrantlabour system can be changed.

Outgoing CEO Cynthia Carroll has made this pledge in anaddress at the Gordon Institute of Business Science earlier thisweek. On building a better future for South Africa’s problem-beset mining sector, she acknowledged the need to discuss withemployees, labour unions, host communities and labour sendingareas how the migrant labour system can be changed to createmore sustainable lives and communities.

“The mining industry of the past has left us with a housinglegacy of which we cannot be proud. We cannot redress thatlegacy overnight, but we need to work with determination toachieve good housing conditions for all our employees,” said theAnglo American CEO, who will step down next year after a six-year term.

She also committed the company to redoubling its efforts toachieve zero harm, promote health in the workplace and in thebroader community and make mining a positive force in theenvironment. She renewed Anglo American’s commitment toemployment equity and the support of education and skillsdevelopment in the broader community through support forfurther education and training colleges.

She also also had ‘n message for the government saying “Increating a globally competitive industry, the starting point is theneed for policy stability and predictability. Mining companiesmake huge capital investments for the long term. They simplywill not make those investments if there is a fear of arbitrary andunpredictable regulatory change. For policymakers, grapplingwith difficult problems, there is always a temptation to believethat policy reinvention will find the magic answers that haveeluded us in the past. But so often the solution lies inimplementing effectively the policies that are already in place, rather than tearing them up to make way for something new. Ifirmly believe that this is the case in relation to the fundamentalsof mining regulation in South Africa. A huge amount of workhas been carried out by the government to create the Mineral andPetroleum Resources Development Act, to develop and thenrevise the Mining Charter and to put in place the supportingframework of social and labour plans. We should build on thosefoundations, not change them”.
