Since the obvious focus should be on our convention, we decided to wait until now for all team members to finish our articles. WOW! YOU ALL MISSED A FANTASTIC CONVENTION! Why do we say this? It is not a big ego trip. We had dozens of people give us compliments during the festivities, with things like you are doing a great job and it is a great rally. The real compliment was the large number of people that said “WE REALLY HAD FUN.” “WE WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR.” That is an indication that your District Team accomplished their objective to have members take advantage of the opportunities we made available to have fun. Judy and I are very proud of the team we have chosen, and are extremely pleased with the way they worked together to set up and execute the plan we had all created. Did we make mistakes? – of course. Did everything go perfectly? – of course not. We learned some things that will help improve future rallies. We have identified changes that need to be made. In spite of it, we believe most attendees did enjoy themselves. This would be a disaster without the efforts of our team and without all the many workers who spent hours helping the rest of the attendees have fun. Thank you to everyone who helped us provide a successful event. For the first time in at least 15 years, Rider Courses were available at the South Carolina Convention – and we had both a Trike Rider’s Course and an Advanced Rider’s Course! We want to thank all the members who took the time to take these courses for advancement or to stay current in the Rider Education Levels Program. We realize that they would not have existed without the efforts of our District Educator, Mike Coral, and the Senior Region A Educator, Chuck Reed. We really need to thank the instructors who provided the training – John Petrush and Mike Melton. Mike and Chuck Reed also stayed over to finish an ARC, that was rained out a couple of weeks ago, on Sunday morning. Congratulations to Mike Melton, as this effort allowed him to complete his certification as an ARC Instructor. With Mike and John available as South Carolina resources, we are much less dependent on help from outside our state to train our members as desired. If there is anyone who needs an ARC or TRC course to advance or stay current, but was not able to attend at the convention, just contact Mike Coral, SC District Educator, to get a class scheduled. For those that did not attend, and did not plan to attend we ask again, why? These conventions are planned for the members of South Carolina, and not for the District Team. What do we need to change to have you join us? Is it dates, location, activities, rides, or any other aspect of our planning? In small group conversations, members always have a reason why they don’t go to conventions now or ever. Many of these same people will play games at a chapter event, or put on a silly costume, or any number of other things to make the gathering fun. Have you watched the costume contests recently? Have you been to one of the Friday night talent shows? Watching friends do silly things in a skit, listening to some of the very good singing voices we have in South Carolina, or other musical or comedic talent is more fun than watching some of the low intelligence junk on our television sets while lying on the couch at home. What is your legitimate excuse for not being with us? Plan right now to come to our rally next year. The dates are April 30 through May 2, 2015. We will be back to the Southeastern Institute for Manufacturing and Technology – an absolutely gorgeous facility – with the same hotels as our hosts. We will begin processing registrations about June 1, and you need to have a number to book a room. Phil and Judy Stone SC District Directors Working for you

Craig and Karen Miller Assistant District Directors Well, the 2014 District Convention, Wings Over Cartoonland, is in the books! For a first convention for this district staff, I think it was a HUGE success. The venue for our convention was fabulous! There were activities going on all the time from semi-nars to games to contests and competitions to rides. If you were not able to make this year’s convention, I hope you will mark your calendars for April 30, May 1 and 2 for the 2015 District Convention … Pirates of the Carolinas. It can only get better. After a little time to wind down a bit, we will gear up to get ready for the 2015 convention. There are some things chapters can do to get ready as well.

If you don’t have a chapter Couple of the Year, now is the time to appoint one. If you do have a COY, I hope they are considering competing for DISTRICT COY. Con-gratulations to Glenn & Donna Bumgarner from Chapter SC-S Newberry, the new South Carolina District Couple of the Year.

Chapters should start working on meeting the criteria for Chapter of the Year. Congratulations to this year’s CHOY … Chapter S, Newberry. These folks worked hard but had a lot of fun doing it.

Do you have a chapter shirt? Why not consider competing in the Chapter Shirt competition? Or the Best Dressed competitions? You probably already have all that is needed.

Are you up to speed on your levels? You can get your ARC or TRC at the convention. Or you can take the 1st Aid/CPR course.

It’s not too early to begin thinking about a chapter skit for the talent show. I am always impressed with the creativ-ity our folks show when they perform their skits.

We love seeing your scrapbooks. And your banners. And your mascots. Bring them with you to the convention to share what you do.

Most importantly … GET REGISTERED early so you can be sure to get a reservation at the host hotels. They will fill up quickly and the rates are unbeatable.

The 2014 South Carolina convention has come and gone. It was a fun but very busy time for everyone involved. Hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves. We have already started working on making next years even better. I would like the thank everyone who took part in the events. Without you there would be no need to have them. If you know of something you would like for us to add to the convention next year, let a member of the district team know so we can see if we can add it. Remember this is your convention. Speaking of that, if you know of a location where you would like to see the convention held in the future, we would like your input. Remember that it’s easy to pick a city, but it has to have the facilities and hotels that we can afford. These places charge a great deal of money to rent them. Let us know if you know of a place and get us a contact name and number. Who knows, your suggestion may lead to the convention in your town in the future.

Riding your motorcycle in the warmth of a summer day feels great while on the open road. The day passes and night

falls, then you realize you’ve gotten too much sun. Even with your protective gear on, you are sunburned and the dam-

age is already done.

Below is an article I found giving the information to help prevent this from happening….

10 Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer Apply Sunscreen—Make sure it is UVA/UVB approved with an SPF of 15 or higher. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you plan to go

in the sun. If you plan to be in the water or doing physical activity where you will be sweating, consider applying a water-

resistant sunscreen. For extended periods of time in the sun, don't forget to reapply. Seek Shade—There are many ways to stay out of the sun including sitting under a tree, using an umbrella, or setting up a canopy. My family took this fun Quick Shade Go backpack canopy to the sand dunes this past weekend, and we were able to create shade in the middle of the dessert. We love to ride motorcycles, and without sun protection we wouldn't be able to enjoy our day.

Understand the Clouds—Over 80% of the sun's rays can penetrate through the clouds. Some of our family's worst sunburns occurred

when we didn't think we were getting any sun. Now I know how important it is to wear sunscreen all the time, even if it's

cloudy.

Use Protective Clothing—Some colors of clothing can help protect you from the sun. If you know you are going to be in the sun,

refrain from wearing light colors. Dark colors attract more heat than harmful light rays. If you wear white, make sure you have

sunscreen under your clothes.

Avoid Tanning Beds—UVA radiant bulbs can burn you 2-5 times faster than the natural sun. UVA rays can cause burns and skin can-

cer.

Protect Your Eyes—The sun can damage cells on your eyelids. Make sure you apply sunscreen to these sensitive areas and wear

glasses that wrap around 100% of the eye.

Spot Check Moles and Freckles—Examine your moles and freckles monthly. If you see any changes in color or size, go to your der-

matologist to have them checked.

Wear a Hat—A hat will not only protect the top of your head but also your eyes, ears, and neck. This is a great way to avoid getting

too much sun on those areas.

Notice Reflective Surfaces—Water, sand, and snow reflect 80% of the sun's harmful rays. Direct rays come from above, but reflect-

ed rays can come at you from any direction. If you plan to be in areas that have these surfaces, take precaution with a sun-

screen that has a high SPF.

Beware of Sun Sensitive Medications—If you are taking a prescription or an antibiotic that will increase your sensitivity to the sun,

make sure you protect yourself. Limit your sun exposure or use extra protection while you are taking these items.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. More than one million people will be diagnosed with skin can-

cer this year, and 10,000 deaths will occur. But skin cancer can be avoided by following these simple steps. Take care of your skin

all year long and protect yourself from the harmful affects of the sun.

What things are you doing to protect yourself and your family from getting skin cancer?

The 2014 SC District Convention is now behind us and with it, so is our time on the District Team. During the past four years, we have had more FUN, made more new friends, and visited more new places than either of us have done in many years.

First we want to congratulate Phil and Judy Stone on a fantastic convention and Thank them and the rest of the District Team for letting us be a part of their awesome team. We love each and every one of you.

Thank you to Charles and Betty Coleman, for first inviting us to be a part of the District Team and guiding us along the way. We learned so much from each of you.

Thank you to our MAD Coordinators; David Buckallew, Chapter A; Renee Dent, Chapter F; Frank Crane, Chapter I; Steve Roberts, Chapter J; Dalton Schull, Chapter P; Jon Horning, Chapter S; and John Petrush, Chapter V. You have each been so great and willing to help when ever called on. Please keep up the great job you have already been doing.

Congratulations to Glen and Donna Bumgarner, our 2014-2015 District Couple of the Year. You are going to be great at your new position and we Know you will have more FUN than ever. Thank you to Eugene and Renee Dent, Chapter F; Gerald Hensley, Chapter H; Dan and Veronica Gilbert, Chapter J; and Doug and Darla Gordon, Chapter P. We enjoyed working with each of you and watching you grow so much in the Couple program. Good Luck to each of you in your future goals, we know you will go far.

Chapter Directors, we encourage each of you to continue to honor a special couple in your Chapter. The Couple of the Year program is vital to the health of any chapter and a great way to add Fun to your chapter.

Buddy and Kim Summer—Good Luck in Madison, not that you will need it. And yes we do love both of you.

To our District, our Region, Chapter J and the many, many GWRRA members we call friends, this is not goodbye. Our hope is that with a little extra time on our hands, we may be able to visit more Chapters and spend more time doing the things we joined GWRRA to do.

Ride safe, “Share the Road”, Be aware, and Celebrate your Couples. Our Love to All of you, Bill and Judy

The 2014 GWRRA SC Convention is now a memory and I do hope that for you that they are fun memories. My learning curve for registering so many people was a little steep and I appreciate your patience with me. I am making notes to make sure some things run smoother next year. I am exhausted after the three days of intense work, which I think has more to do with being very ill the two weeks before the Rally, I literally got out of my sick bed to be there (my doctor assured me I was no longer contagious). The smiling faces and laughter all around us made all this worthwhile and I can’t wait till next year. The competition for dress for couples and chapters was awesome. I want to thank Chapter F and Chapter S for competing and for having patience with the new staff. We need more chapters to enter these competitions so please ask Chapter F and S how much fun they had doing this and plan on entering next year. I never would have believed that one day, not only would I be a wascally rabbit being hunted by Elmer Fudd, but also a dancing raisin, especially at this age. If you aren’t participating, you are missing half the fun of a rally. Please let your District Staff know what you liked and what you didn’t like about the rally. This is your Convention and we need your input. For now I am already wondering what Chapter P will have me dressed up as next year. It will be a hard to top a wascally rabbit and a dancing raisin. Next week I am having eye surgery and hopefully will be back on my trike soon. Ride safe, ride often Margaret Caughman

Our Convention was a new experience for all of us. My hope is everyone had fun! We had quite a few first timers, and some out of Region members in attendance. There were banners, scrapbooks, some really great Chapter projects, news letters, and mascots. The Chapter participation was great, we have a ton of talent in GWRRA, especially in South Carolina We have a new District Couple! Congratulations Glenn and Donna Bumgarner! Four couples from our State competed and all would have represented South Carolina well. I was very proud of all the couples, they all did a super job. Let's start working on next year's couples. It is such an honor to be chosen by your chapter, so I would like to see all Chapters involved. Rich and I met a lot of members, and gained a lot of new friends. We had fun, and even learned new things. That is what it is all about. Looking forward to next year. The trip home was a nice ride, as we took the "back roads", weather was perfect. Missed the new Grandson, and his big brother, but all is well. This was the beginning for Rich and I as far as Conventions go, so we are ready to go. Wing Ding and Eufala here we come! What a great start! Thank you everyone that attended. Jean and Rich Kitko

As we begin our year as the South Carolina District Couple of the Year, we would like to thank Buddy and Kim Summer for the outstanding job they did representing our district during the last year. We have some big shoes to fill, but we will do our best to represent South Carolina throughout the district, as well as Region “A.” We look forward to being your ambassadors and consider it an honor and privilege. We joined the Gold Wing Road Rider Association in 2008 and were “jams” until January 2009. Then we were asked to be the chapter membership enhancement coordinators. We must have done something right because we were asked to be the district coordinators in April, 2009, at our first rally. For the next two years, like a lot of people in our organization, we were on district team and the chapter team. We stepped down from the district team because of family health issues, but we stepped in as assistant chapter directors and kept our position as the MEC. Glenn and I try to give 100 percent in everything we do, and we learned to balance our time and effort to fulfill our obligations to both our chapter and our district. We learned quickly that sometimes we had to step in and help out when there was a need. We have done some temporary work on the newsletter and worked with our director to get everything ready for the an-nual state officers’ meeting in January. On one occasion, Charles Coleman, the District Director at the time, asked us to take over the duties of the MEC, at the upcoming rally; the position was unfilled, and we enjoyed helping him out. Our GWRRA family is important to us and family members help each oth-er out. We became instructors and started teaching seminars, but we usually did them away from the classroom. We, along with our fellow chapter instructors Buddy and Kim Summer, held classes at campsites and at Buddy’s home. We made our seminars casual and usually included some food and fun. That made it more interesting. We are now university trainers in leadership training and membership enhancement, and we plan to be rider education instructors this year. We have submitted the paperwork for level 4 in the rider education program, and we try to teach through example by riding safely. We enjoy whatever we do with our chapter. We have stayed active in our chapter and enjoyed working with our chapter team. We strive to live up to the GWRRA motto. We teach and take seminars that will make us more knowledgeable and keep us safe. Our last five years have been all about fun, safety, and knowledge. Most of all, we’ve made a lot of new friends who are now part of our GWRRA family. Glenn and Donna Bumgarner 2014-2015 District Couple of the Year
