Tom Eden Chapter Director

How can we get you back? How can we get you back? This is a topic that came up at the March Mid-month get together. Some suggestions were made by those in attendance, but I believe the answers must come from those that were not there to answer the question. If you have not been to a gathering, a dinner ride, a Saturday ride or any of the other planned activities I would like to hear your comments. Please contact me via email or telephone. When I began attending the gatherings with OH-B3 in early 2006 the room was nearly full for each gathering. What has happened to all the people I remember being there?

Thank you to those that braved the snow, rain, wind and wet ground to help at the Obetz Community Easter Egg Hunt. I was with a group that scattered eggs for the 7 – 10 year age group. It took approximately 15 minutes to scatter the tote full of eggs. It took the kids approximately 2 minutes to gather them up. Attendance was lighter than previous years; however, I blame the inclement weather for that. We may have better weather next year when Easter Sunday will be April 17th. I was at Sierra Electronic today to obtain a new helmet and have my CB checked out. I asked them about their rally schedule for 2016 and was told that they have no plans to be at either the Buckeye Rally or the Region D rally I received an email from District Director Lloyd Glydewell inviting Chapter OH-B3 to be a participant in a “Family Feud Game” at the Region D rally. Our opponent would be the Chapter of the Year from Michigan. The contest would be on Friday evening of the rally. I hope we could have a good showing of chapter members there to participate. I am not sure of the topics; however, I expect it to be GWRRA related so sharpen up on your memory on GWRRA facts. Tom Eden Chapter Director

Has anyone been out on their bikes yet? It sure felt like spring today, March 16, even with the strong wind gusts. I rode mine to work early this AM and then fought the winds on the way home. Thank the Lord there was No salt on the roads due to the recent rains! Have you checked out your bikes in preparation for the riding season which should soon be here if Mother Nature cooperates? I look forward to all the fun rides we have planned for the chapter members. So I implore the Bees of Hive Chapter B-3 to make your plans early and come out to buzz around with your fellow Bees and enjoy the fun we have planned.

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

THE BIG QUESTION

Our association has a question that everybody needs to answer.

How do we attract new people to join GWRRA and attend our Chapter?????

Let's face it, we are all getting older, some of our earlier members have passed or are no

longer riding due to several other factors.

The younger people that ride have busy lives, a family, a car and house payments, or are

in the process of sending their children to college. These people cannot afford the cost of

a Gold Wing and/or their motorcycle of choice. They have to wait for their motorcycle of

the future.

So, I have a couple of questions for our members:

1. When you were younger how many owned a Gold Wing as your first motorcycle?

2. How many owned other brands as their first motorcycle?

Almost everyone starts out with a motorcycle other than a Gold Wing. We are the

"ELETE'. We have experienced the 'FUN AND FRLIENDSHIPS" we have found in

GWRRA. The other motorcyclists are just waiting until the day comes that they can ride a

Gold Wing or another brand of a full dress motorcycle.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy by overlooking what is right in front of us.

"WHERE ARE OUR YOUNG AND FUTURE MEMBERS?" They are riding other brands

of motorcycles until they can afford a Gold Wing, (Of course, we also have quite a few

Harley Davidson motorcyclists that ride with the Gold Wings) or feel they have the

knowledge to ride a Gold Wing.

We as members of GWRRA welcome all motorcyclists. Let them in on the "FRIENDS

FOR FUN....SAFTEY...AND KNOWLEDGE." We (most of us) were in their shoes at one

time.....

PLEASE REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING:

Bob DeLong: Recovering from surgery...He is now recuperating at home with Evelyn at

his side.....Bob, We all wish you a great recovery and will see you soon.....

Ed Richards: Health problems..............

Bill & Karen Cole: Recovering from their accident.....

Sandy Durbin: Back problems..............

Should there have been someone I missed PLEASE let me know............

SIGNS

As the lyrics to the great song says: We see them every day, everywhere… They warn us…

They direct us… They make fun of us….

They inform us, in case we have forgotten the date and time….

They make us laugh… They make us think….DUH !

But do they really get our attention? I am as guilty as the next person. You see a sign. It is the same sign you have always seen, in this spot or another. You don’t read it; you just kind of absorb it. It may or may not pertain to you at that moment, but your mind stores it away. While these informative signs should never be trivial, they do need to get the attention of those they are intended to reach, be it all drivers, those who text and drive, or those who travel through a day oblivious to their surroundings. Those who are responsible for wording the signs need to be a little more imaginative in this day and age of sound bites and visual flashes. If you are traveling at 60 mph on a freeway, you generally have only a couple seconds or less to read and comprehend a sign. Driving through Phoenix this week, Gary snapped a pic of a road sign that catches the attention and makes a point. It could have said “Don’t drink and drive.” Seen that before and our inner response is “of course not.” But instead it read: “DRIVE HAMMERED - GET NAILED” (Continued on next page)

April 2016 Page 7

Sometimes I think the government employees in charge of these signs have no imagination. Maybe they should poll the public for clever ways to get messages across. Maybe a PR firm, though they are probably best at selling overpriced cereal and beer. Think the next time you see a sign…good, bad or just plain? Could there have been a better way to get my attention? Either way, try to read all the signs…and smile. Karen Ballou Motorist Awareness

RIDER EDUCATION

Gary Ballou

My Rider Education seminar at the March Gathering was on Dealing with Distracted Drivers. Since then I have found several additional and useful resources on this topic. As Motorcycle Awareness Month is coming up in May, please redouble your efforts when we talk to motorists (and each other) about the dangers of driving distracted. The lives we save may be our own. Here is a reprint of an article from the Governors Highway Safety Administration. (Article

printed on next page) If you wish to make copies to carry on your bikes, the link is http://www.ghsa.org/files/issues/pdf/dist/10tips_2013.pdf Rider Education for April 2016 Gary Ballou Have fun, but be safe. “Dress for the Slide, Not for the Ride”

Special Activities Coordinator

We offer a great big THANK YOU to all the B-3 members who helped with the Obetz Easter Egg Hunt Saturday March 19. It was cold and rainy but you came out to support the community anyway. There were a surprising number of children that participated and had a great time. The food pantry at the community center has reopened. We can again bring in food donations. Judy Hogan said the biggest need is for, soup, rice, tuna, pasta, spaghetti sauce, mac & cheese and boxed dinners. And, of course, they appreciate anything we donate. Thanks for all you do to support our chapter and the Obetz community! Esther Ford
