Chapter “O” has started a Wingo (Bingo Card) for different seminars. This is to encourage members to go visit our sponsors and different chapters. When you go to visit a sponsor or participate in a seminar, have the instructor or sponsor sign your card. This is just a way we as a chapter can let our sponsors know that we appreciate their sponsorship. If you do not have a Wingo card, you can print one off the Web page or ask John Papson or myself for a card. The chapter would like to thank Bill and Nancy James for presenting seminars to our chapter for not only the chapter challenge but for the knowledge presented. It's all about safety and knowledge and having fun with friends. Bob Lake will have a seminar on Group Riding on April 16th. Bob will have seminars all year long, so please check out his agenda. SPECIAL NOTE-- As we get our bikes out, just remember that the city has NOT cleared the streets of sand yet so please be careful when making turns and at intersections. This last rain will help with the removal of the sand. We would like to thank Al and Alma Scranton for sponsoring our dinner run this month at Joe Tess. We have another outing coming up. Gary and Jan are planning to lead us to Central Nebraska Wings N' Things in Clarks Nebraska. Wings N' Things is one of our fine sponsors. This will be on May 3rd. We will meet at the Wal-Mart on 180th and West Center at 9:00 A. M. We will make a stop along the way. Check out the Happening section on your web sight as there is a lot of information as well as a calendar listing events. Thanks to our Web Master / Asst. Chapter Director John and Cheryl Papson. If you have an event you would like to put on the calendar, please let John or myself know as we will monitor the events so we don’t have two things going at the same time. Just a little note about the benefits of Rescue Plus - Marty and me were on our way to Clarinda Iowa on Highway 34 east with the truck and trailer (trike on trailer) when all of a sudden my truck passed out (stopped running, in the country, 50 miles from our home). I tried to start the truck but it would not turn over (Diesel) I said to Marty "Let's see what G W R R A Rescue Plus has to say". Long story short, I was not watching my mile markers and I thought that we were close to Red Oak but found out that we were 55 miles from Red Oak. The nice lady with Rescue Plus asked if I had a G P S (yes) give me the grid accordance off your G P S and that’s how they found us. In no more than 30 min. they were with us and loaded the truck on the flat bed, hooked the trailer on the Tow truck and pulled us home to Omaha, 50 miles. As we got everything unloaded, the driver said thanks, shook hands and said goodbye. I found out that it cost Rescue Plus $250.00 to pull us home. The alternator cost me $368.00. This is the second time we have used Rescue Plus and I will not be without it. Rick and Robin along with the local CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association) and the King of Kings Church has scheduled the first annual blessing of the bikes on May 10, 2014. Please see flyer below. This will be on our May meeting day, so we will have a short meeting so the ones that want to go to the blessing of the bikes may do so. John and Cheryl Papson will be heading up Cycle Fest this year with the help of the Legion Riders. This year's event will be at Stinson Park, along with the Healthy Kids Day from 11 till 2, and we are expecting 5000 kids !!!! We will need all the help we can get. Remember to ride safe. Do your T – Clock inspection as this might be the first time out this year. Keep an eye out for sand. The city is doing a good job but has not finished cleaning all streets.

Rider Education Bob & Charlotte Lake

“Help will always be given to those who deserve it!” For Harry Potter fans, do you remember when Professor Dumbledore said this to Harry in the scene after Lord Voldemort thought he finally finished Harry off? Another question is, why is so much emphasis placed on the Rider Ed Levels Program? As unlikely as it may seem, these two questions go hand in hand. To answer this we make a basic assumption that we all deserve to ride without incident; “safely”, which assumes we take proper precautions, successfully manage the risks we face and continually seek to improve our riding skills and knowledge. I don’t believe there is one of us out there that would dispute these assumptions. So where does the Levels program come in? The Rider Ed Levels Program is a tool that helps us act on these assumptions. Let’s break them down: Proper Precautions: We emphasize riding with proper riding gear all the time to minimize physical harm should a crash happen through whatever cause. We also emphasize riding with a clear head, not emotionally or physically incapacitated, and we don’t abuse things that make it hard to ride alert. We ensure our bikes are prepared for the ride by conducting “T-CLOCS” inspections and we ride within our limits.

Manage Risks: What better way to do this than to take a skill improving Rider Course or Co-Rider seminar. The classroom component discusses the risks and hazards we face when riding and provides a strategy for handling them. The riding portion helps us improve our motorcycle handling skills set and builds our confidence in our abilities. Other training associated with Rider Ed such as CPR and First Aid allow us to manage or mitigate the risks associated with the times we may need to utilize this training. Improve our Riding Skills and Knowledge: Here we have some overlap also because we improve through honing those skills we practice in riding courses and CPR and FA training and refresh the knowledge imparted during any of our seminars addressing riding more safely. So if we do take proper precautions, manage risks and improve ourselves through the aspects of the Rider Ed Levels program we are “Deserving” and do receive help through the Rider Ed Levels Program. After all, we all want to be known as the “Boy and Girl” who lived. Now what to do about that scar? Ride Safe. March 2014 Rider Ed Question of the Month Answer Level II of the Rider Education Levels Program is titled “Safety by Education”. At this Level both the Rider and the Co-Rider are required to increase their riding knowledge and riding skill levels by accomplishing what? How many safe miles must each have accrued? Rider: The rider is required to take a motorcycle safety riding skill course. This course may be one of any number of courses. It may be a:

• Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Rider Course. This could be a: o Basic Rider Course (BRC) o BRC2 (formerly the Experienced Rider Course of ERC) o MSF Advanced Rider Course (ARC) o 3 Wheel BRC (3WBRC) basic trike Rider Course o Returning Rider BRC (RRBRC)

• GWRRA Rider Course. This could be a: o GWRRA Advanced Rider Course (ARC) o Trailering Course (TC) o Trike Rider Course (TRC) o Trike and Trailer Rider Course (TTRC) o Sidecar Rider Course (SRC)

• Evergreen Safety Council TRC and SRC

• Most any Track school

The Rider must have ridden 5,000 Safe Miles since joining GWRRA. A safe mile is one where no crash has occurred resulting in injury or property damage. Co-Rider: The Co-Rider is required to take the Co-Rider Seminar (I or II) or attend the classroom portion of a Rider Course or be a Co-Rider during a Rider Course (2-Up). The Co-Rider is also required to have ridden 5,000 safe miles.

All rider courses and Co-Rider seminars are valid for a period of three years but we encourage Riders and Co-Riders to take them more frequently. April 2014 Rider Ed Question of the Month Answer Why is the clutch lever always adjacent to the left handgrip and operated by the left hand and the gearshift adjacent to the left side of the engine case and operated by the left foot? District Rally June 19-21 2014, Quality Inn/Ogallala NE With plenty of attractions and lots of great riding, western Nebraska is the diamond in the rough. Spend some time at the rally then check out all the area has to offer. This could be the start of a great summer vacation, being only a few hours from Colorado and Wyoming. Did you know? Ogallala is Nebraska’s ‘Cowboy Capital’? Named for the Oglala band of Dakota Sioux and located on the Union Pacific Railroad, Ogallala was a lusty cowtown of the Old West. During the summer months, at least 10 to 12 herds, each of 2,500 head of cattle, could usually be located south of the town. The floaters, gamblers, trades people and dancehall hostesses, who made up a large portion of Ogallala’s mobile population, drifted off to Omaha or Cheyenne to spend the winter. The word Oglala means to “scatter one’s own.” So start planning your vacation today. It begins at the NE/SD District Rally in Ogallala NE. Limited amount of rooms (including pet friendly) are now available for reservation by calling 308-284-3623. Rooms are $69.95 per night and include a discount coupon for the Denny’s restaurant on site. Deadline for discounted room registration is June 1st. Check out the hotel website here. Let them know you are with the GWRRA District Rally for special rates. Schedule of events will be available in the near future. Hope to see you at these Fun events!
