Education & safety

First I want to thank Roy and Pam for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Chapter Educator. Second I want to thank all of you for forgiving me for the mistakes that I'm sure I will make. We are getting close to the end of winter and cold weather. It is now the time to think about our wings. I’m sure that yours is just like mine in the garage on the center stand. May be you have the battery on a charger or battery tender. Now is the time to look at the terminals make sure they are clean and the battery is up to the proper level with acid. Spin that back tire make sure there is no nails or cuts. Make sure you have plenty of wear left for next summers riding. Pull and push on the sides to see if you can get any side play for a wheel bearing check. Do the same for the front. Next check all your fluids. When was the last time you had them changed? How much of the pads do you have left on your brakes? Are all your controls working as they should? I prefer to do only the most simple of repairs and maintenance on my bike. I have a mechanic in California that has maintained it since new and I'm sure that I will find one here. I like having another set of eyes looking at it. Some one that works on wings every day. That is just me, there is nothing wrong with doing all your own work. No one knows your wing like you do. The Goldwing is one of the finest machines that we have on the road today. If we maintain them I don't have a clue how far they will go down the road. I know of a 1500 in California that has over 400,000 miles on it and is still going every day. Carl Corwin AR Chapter P Educator

February 3rd I was in Ontario, California for the annual 4 Corners Finishers Banquet. There was about 40 finishers there. The weather ,what it was, I was not one of the people that rode there. There was also a good showing of female riders. One being the "Pink Lady". If you have ever seen her it is not hard to figure out why she calls her self the " Pink Lady". She rode down from South Dakota and when leaving Ontario is going on to Mexico. After that she is going some place in the mid west to a Rally then on to Florida. The speaker was Bob Mutchler. Bob is a long distance rider holding some world records. Bob has done I think he said 4 Iron But 4 Corners runs. That's 11 days of over 1100 miles a day. He has also done the Southern California Motorcycles Association 4 corners run 4 times. Bob rides a BMW with a side car and has over 1,200,000 miles. Now that's a long way down the road. When he was 9 years old he contracted polio and was in a iron lung for three years. He rides all over the world for "Polio Plus".He is truly a remarkable man and he sure" Makes A Difference". There was one man there that had done the 4 Corners ride 12 times! When they asked him how many times he had done it and he said 12 times " Clint" my ridding partner out there Turned to me and said I bet he's not married!! If any one wants to read about the run you can go to Southern California Motorcycle Association on the web and click on 4 Corners Run. Carl

Good day to all: This month's message is to let all know that May is "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month" another month away and it is fast approaching. And as we get back on the road, keep in mind safety. Even if in the car or on the bike, same privileges apply to both on the highway. Look out, clearly signal your intentions. (see Gold Book for information on hand signal's, lots of information in this book, take the time to read it & use it) Allow plenty of space between you and what is in front of you. Over two-thirds of fatal motor cycle accidents involve a vehicle-stay alert. Communicate with your fellow bikers any road hazards. Co-Riders be that extra set of eyes. Always enjoy the ride and stay safe. Arkansas Couple of the Year Spotlight Mike and Pat Williams were the Chapter Couple of the Year 2006 for Chapter P in beautiful Mountain Home, Arkansas. They are also the Assistant Directors, to CD’s Roy and Pam Behrens. They have been members of GWRRA since 2004 and are enjoying their adventures on their Gold Wing. Mike was born in Durant, Oklahoma and Pat in Cleveland, Ohio. They now reside in Henderson, Arkansas. They have three children, William, 27, Crystal, 23 and Matthew, 21. And then came their pride and joy, the grandchildren, Makayla, 4, Alberto, 3 and Reese is 1. Mike’s interest in motorcycles started when Mike’s Uncle James bought him a Ducati in 1978. He was 14 years old and has been riding some kind of bike ever since. He has raced dirt bikes and 4-wheelers. Then came the fast to furious V-65 Honda Sabre. Pat started riding the dirt bikes and 4-wheelers, too. She was only a passenger on the Sabre, her legs were too short to drive by herself. She does have a Honda 250 custom bike that she rides to and from work every now and then. Most of their riding is done together on their Wing. They love riding the roads of Arkansas, especially Northern Arkansas’ curvy back roads. Most of their life they have lived in Arkansas and believe there is no better place to live. Mike is a self-employed carpenter and woodworker. For hobbies and other interests, he loves to hunt with his muzzleloader, bow and gun, loves to fish and uses his skills to make birdhouses and chimes. Ann is employed at National Supply Company in Mountain Home. She is in sales, (plumbing, electrical, heating and air supplies). She has been there for 13 years. Pat (Ann) says as far as hobbies or other interests go, that would have to be spending time with the grandkids, because other than riding their Gold Wing that is her favorite thing to do. Because of Ann’s work hours they have decided they could not be in the Couple of the Year Selection. We had the opportunity to get to know them a little better in our Couple of the Year Seminar, in Morrilton. They are a really great couple. Work gets in the way, but we want them to know how much we appreciate them for their participation with their chapter. They sure would have looked good on stage in Morrilton. Mike says he would have to wear his overalls because that’s all he wears. We told him that would be great!! As long as Ann wore hers too! As far as participation in GWRRA, they have been to the Region H rally in 2006, Wing Ding in Nashville and also took the BRC in 2006. They have attended day rallies and hold the Asst. CD position in their chapter. They have also been to Honda Hoot in Tennessee two times. They rode the Dragons Tail and the Cherohala Skyway. They have been from one end to the other on the Natchez Trace and of course lots and lots of beautiful roads here in Arkansas. They would love to travel out west for a vacation in 2007. And when time permits they would like to go back east again toward the ocean and also to visit the Goldwing Factory in Ohio. When asked why they joined GWRRA their answer was, “We wanted to meet new friends and have fun and see all the great country that God has provided for us”. Our Gold Wing organization certainly provides all of that and more. We sure hope to see more of Mike and Pat on the road!

Our American Flag

All Americans should be given this lesson. Those who think that America is an arrogant nation should really reconsider that thought. Our founding fathers used God’s word and teachings to establish our Great Nation and I think it's high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation's history. Pass it along and be proud of the country we live in and even more proud of those who serve to protect our "GOD GIVEN" rights and freedoms I hope you take the time to read this..... To understand what the flag draped coffin really means..... Here is how to understand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows and widowers. Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776? Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day! The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life. The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life. The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world. The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong." The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that They pledge allegiance to the flag of the United! States Of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic. The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day. The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born. The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their nations motto, "In God We Trust." After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today. There are some traditions and ys of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.

BY THE BOOK By: Dale Wingrove Region H Trainer The “By The Book” articles are intended to help familiarize Volunteer Leaders and GWRRA Members with the guidelines, policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Guidebook. Any quotes or references to topics contained in our OGB should not be taken “out of context”. Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District and Chapter newsletters. In the February 2007 issue of Wing World Magazine Jim Hutchins introduced a new program, the “Chapter of the Year Program”. There are basic qualifications for chapters to qualify to be a Chapter of the year candidate. Most of these qualifications are in the OGB. The next few months we will let you know what those are. This month will be Websites on page D-8 of the OGB. The Chapter websites have become one of the best tools a chapter can have. It is a place where all members with computer access can go and see all of the information they need to participate with the chapter. It is also a place for new members, or new Gold Wing owners to be introduced to GWRRA and to find someone to ride with. If your chapter does not have a website below are the guidelines for a GWRRA web page.

GUIDELINES FOR WEB PAGES With the tremendous opportunities the Internet now provides, many chapters, districts and regions develop web pages to share information describing activities and other areas of interest. As a result, virtually anyone worldwide has access to these sites. Therefore, it seems prudent that these pages should be consistent and uphold the standards of these web pages. It is recommended that the following standards be used as guidelines: 1. The GWRRA Logo, and the words “Gold Wing Road Riders Association” or the acronym, “GWRRA”, should be included as a part of the web page. 2. Region, district, chapter designations, plus city and district will serve to identify the web page for those visiting the site. 3. It may be helpful to appoint a specific person as Web or Page Master, as a point-of contact for Inquiries, and questions. 4. A link to the National GWRRA Home Page (http://www.gwrra.org) would be beneficial to those who may be surfing the web for information regarding Gold Wings/Valkyrie organizations. 5. Regarding links to competing Gold Wing organizations, it would seem common sense should prevail and one could ask the question of whether Ford Motor Company would link itself to General Motors’ Home Page? As such, we don’t advertise or link to competitors. 6. Some web pages identify Staff Members with direct email links to each Staff Member. In essence, the above standards are consistent with those in place for newsletters and newspapers and as such, should not provide any undue obstacles to the consistency and uniformity of GWRRA Web Pages.
