Couple of the Year

2017 It was with great pleasure that I presented my choice for B-3 Couple of Year for 2017, Robert and Pam Vogel, at the January Gathering. They are always enthusiastic and are a joy to be around. On more than one occasion they jumped in and helped out with any event - Officers meeting lunches, Obetz Halloween, Christmas luncheon, etc... Thinking back to the Buckeye Rally in June 2016 they helped with the setup of the B-3 camp site. It wasn’t only the camp site decorations. They competed in the Hobo King and Queen competition, in some of the games and helped with the Jail and Bail where they went out and arrested rally attendees. Pam was selected as the Hobo Queen and was a “Royal” delight during the rally. So when you see them offer your congratulations and best wishes. They will soon have many new memories to enjoy as they represent Ohio B-3 as our Chapter Couple of the Year.

COUPLE OF THE YEAR 2017

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP IN A VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION

Well... this is a deep subject we've all had to consider at one time or another as members of GWRRA... isn't it? Let's look at the reality of the situation: the organization is built on a motto of "FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY, AND KNOWLEDGE", right? The "FRIENDS" part comes easy. People generally gravitate towards other people with similar points of view or common ground and will either become friends or they won't. Our Gold Wings offer us at least one point of common ground; it's up to us to make the "FRIENDS" part or the motto a reality. For the "FUN", "SAFETY"' and "KNOWLEDGE" parts of the motto though, we quite often look to the volunteer leader and their volunteer helpers in the organization to pave the way. As members, we're looking for meetings, day rides, safety and leadership seminars, rallies, dinner events, overnight events, fundraisers, parties, chapter visitations and all the trimmings to be planned and organized and placed on our menu for us to choose how we want to make the most out of our membership in the organization. Somebody needs to do all that work for us, but who??? Consider this: since everyone is a volunteer, up to and including all but a very few people at the National level, what inspires a volunteer leader to inspire volunteer helpers to inspire the members to have fun, and make motorcycle safety and knowledge a priority in their busy daily lives??? (Continued on next page)

February 2017 Page 5

Remember... there is no salary at the end of the week, no leverage that can coerce cooperation where none already exists. Sound challenging, it is. The spirit of volunteerism is a very personal thing. First, individual circumstances can dictate whether someone who might otherwise be willing, is able to dedicate themselves to a volunteer endeavor. Free time may be a key factor, for example. Or, if time is not an issue, then maybe the appeal of the opportunity itself must be right. In other words, some folks may only volunteer for tasks or roles they think they will enjoy performing. Some folks may volunteer as a means to enrich their spirit and because they feel good when they can work and help others. And yet others may volunteer because they enjoy a sense of accomplishment, and a challenge, regardless of the task at hand. The point is, everyone is different, and everyone volunteers in GWRRA for different reasons. Few, I wager, ever really dig deep into their personal motivation. They just jump in when it feels right.. Truth is, GWRRA depends on volunteers and the spirit of volunteerism to be successful. Volunteer leaders and staff at all levels... Chapter and National must be there to support and serve the membership and to offer up their time and skills to make it possible for the members to maximize their enjoyment and benefit for the organization. Current volunteer leaders must always be on the lookout for others who might also volunteer to help out. Some tasks are small, and might require only a small commitment. Other tasks or roles might require a greater commitment.... Regardless, someone's got to do "it", whatever "it" is, and one or two people cannot possibly do "it" all. As a member of GWRRA, be appreciative of the work done by the volunteers at the respective staff levels. They're members too, and want all the same things you do... Offer up your skills and enthusiasm and step up and "give back" from time to time to balance the load and make it possible for everyone to have "FUN". There's a lot to do. The GWRRA Leadership Training Division offers members at all levels the opportunity to take advantage of training that will maximize the enjoyment and lessen the load of being a volunteer leader. MOTORIST AWARENESS DIVISION Karen Ballou

It’s February – again

For those new to Ohio winters, it can be challenging. There will be snow,

ice, rain, floods, sunshine, clouds, cold and…..what did I miss? It can be

interesting, and for those who live through the winters, I think we just look

forward to the next day, because it will change.

I think you would say…YUCK! (but I love the snow, so pretty)..I heard that. I happen to

love and need four seasons a year and this is just one of them. Only 25% of my life…. Seems a fair

trade…

But remember that February is close to April and in April the motorcycles emerge from

hibernation to bring fun on the road back to our world.

In the meantime, we must move ourselves from place to place on four wheels (and window

wipers and heaters) and dodge the sliding cars driven by young speeders who are immortal

and bulletproof, try to remember where that pothole in the street was and work on those

budding ideas for the next riding season.

An interesting thing happened with Gary’s new car. It is a Jeep Patriot and is loaded with

many bells and whistles, including tire pressure sensors. I guess many new car models now have

this. With the cold snaps into single digit temperatures, the sensor lit up on the dashboard. It was

11 degrees. When checked, the tire gauge showed that all pressures were perfect. When the temp

went up, the sensor light went out. When the temperature dipped again, at 11 degrees the light

came back on. Again, the pressures were fine. Now we don’t know if this is something particular

to Jeep or in the computer programming. Be sure to check tire pressure as the Ohio temperatures go

from 55 to 5 in a single day. Those are the fun days.

Enjoy your February, drive very carefully and remember to join us at

Cabin Fever, Feb 3 & 4 at Mohican State Park.

And any motorcyclists out in Ohio now, ARE CRAZY PEOPLE…Avoid

them!!!

I am going to go get WARM now. !!!

RIDER EDUCATION DIVISION Gary Ballou

Rider Ed for February 2017

Hello Fellow Wingers!

The Ohio District sponsors a series of approved Rider Courses each Spring, giving us a

chance to polish up our riding skills and (maybe) catch any bad habits that may have crept

into our skills sets. They are a combination of classroom refresher and riding exercises on

a closed course. They are available for two (ARC) or three (TRC) wheeled motorcycles,

and any of these classes may be taken 1 or 2 up so co-riders can benefit too. The cost is a

modest $35 per bike (no additional charge for co-riders!). One of the classes (May 21 @

Galion) is for Trikes with Trailers, and will include some practice time parallel parking with

a trailer.

These classes are needed every three years to qualify you for advancement or renewal in

the GWRRA Levels Program (Level 2 or higher) and could also qualify you for a nice

discount on your insurance premiums. Don’t forget to ask your agent!

Each class is limited to 12 bikes maximum, so the sooner you register, the better chance

you will get the date & location of your choice. FYI the “Northeast” site was announced

after the form was printed. It will be in Streetsboro Ohio.

The form can be found in this newsletter on page 15, or online at:

http://www.ohiogwrra.org/PDF/ridered/classes/RE-registration.pdf

Let’s keep our spirits up. Spring will be here soon!

Gary Ballou
