Happy June everyone.
Let’s hope we can get our bikes blessed this month!
As you will see from the district article, The district rally will be held in Uniontown next
year. We all know what that means. Chapter E is the hosting chapter for this event and we
are going to need to set up some things. Once I find out what all we are going to have to do I
will let you know and I am sure we are going to need some help with this. I have already
been thinking of a few vendors and some rides for us to have and we will need to do a lot
more I am sure. the chapter is going to need help with this one, please let me know if you
can help us out. Sometimes, trying to think of something to write every month can be
difficult but then, when you least expect it, the material just presents itself. We were on the
way home from the district meeting and just about two miles on the turnpike from the
Bedford exit we run into a large traffic jam. It stretched almost five miles long. They were
doing some repairs on a bridge near New Baltimore. We had a nice forty-five minute wait
counting the hour as we crawled along. Then I get home and there is a message on our
machine to call Hoss’. Apparently, They booked our room with another party and are
putting us into the small room. I think this happens at least once a year. I told the young lady
that we book that room for the whole year and we should have first choice. So after much
back and forth, I agreed that we will use the smaller room this month and she made sure that
our usual room will be available for the rest of the year. To apologize for the mistake, there
will be appetizers on the tables from Hoss’s at no extra charge. Then when you think all
things are going normal you get another surprise, I was on the way home from last month’s
gathering and was taking the “short” ride home. When I got to Connellsville, I stopped at
119 and waited for the traffic light. I pulled out and when I tried to put my right foot down I
couldn’t find the footboard. It seems a bolt worked loose and the footboard was standing up.
I pulled over and removed the board until I got home. Replaced the bolt and now it’s back to
normal. Lesson learned, periodically go over your accessories, and check the mounts. One
of the problems I have experienced is that Loctite does not work well when the bolts and
threaded holes are coated with chrome. Anyway, Jean and I are heading to Knoxville this
month and going to try the tail of the dragon and the Blue ridge parkway. I hope it doesn’t
bite us and we have to leave a part on the tree of shame. Whoever is going to All chapters
west, we hope you have a good time. We also will not be able to go on the Addison
chainsaw festival ride or to Linden Hall as those fall on the same days as our trip. I hope
everyone going enjoys themselves.

Competence
is 'Good Enough'

'Competent' means having the knowledge, skills, and ability to deal with virtually any
issue that you will be confronted with. But it is not a universal characterization. Being
competent at doing slow-speed tight turns does not in any way suggest that you are also
competent when it comes to braking, for example.
Furthermore, being competent must be taken in a meaningful context. If you are a newbie
attending your first rider training course, when you perform a quick-stop it is an indication
of braking competence to be able to stop your motorcycle at an average deceleration rate of
0.6g's while maintaining control, starting at a speed of 20 MPH.
That ability, however, is FAR from being an indication of braking competence when
describing a rider's braking capabilities riding on public roads.
And then there is the concept of being 'good enough'. What does that mean?
I suggest that a healthy definition of being 'good enough' is having the knowledge, skills,
and ability to deal with virtually any issue that you will be confronted with. That's
exactly the same definition as I presented above for 'competent'. And I mean it to be.
In a recent debate I had with a group of instructors, those who should know better, they
invariably elected to challenge that definition in favor of one which implied that being 'good
enough' was an unacceptable compromise made by a rider who chooses not to be as good as
he or she can be - at whatever skill they were talking about. Invariably they used the 'good
enough' phrase as a pejorative.
How unfortunate. Instructors should have as their number one objective teaching their students to be
competent - good enough.
(Coaches, on the other hand, are missioned to help competent students learn how to become as good as they
can be - not just competent. And I DO NOT mean Rider Coaches here.)
This may sound like semantics, but it's not. There are lots of people who will never become 'competent' at a
skill, even if they perform at the very best they can.
Where am I going with this tip? I want to make the case for all riders becoming and maintaining
competence with their motorcycles and deciding for themselves that that level of skill is good enough. And
that's where practice comes in.
If all you want to do is pass a training course, being able to achieve an average 0.6g's deceleration rate and
remaining in control starting at 20 MPH is good enough for you - unless you then want to ride on public
roads. Achieving an average 0.8g's deceleration rate is good enough (competent) if you want to ride public
roads.
So let's deal with the concept of never being 'good enough' - that is, believing that your practice should
always be designed to make you 'better' than you are. (Nonsense, to my mind.)
Though it sounds just fine, in fact attempting to always be better at a skill than you are is insane. It is a
prescription for failure, injury and possibly death. It presumes that you are never good enough unless you
are perfect - that is, never.
Imagine, for example, running toward the edge of a cliff and having a desire to see how close to that edge
you can get when you stop. Sooner or later you will go over the cliff - and it only takes once to end your
riding career.
Being the best you can be has great merit, so long as that is a target close to being 'competent'.
And never forget that while maintaining your competence you will sooner or later discover that you are
growing older - and your reflexes and balance, or eye sight, or stamina, or heart, etc. is no longer what it
used to be. In other words, being the best you can be may no longer be 'competent'. Are you going to let an
instructor tell you that you should continue to strive for being better than you are? Do you think that there
are many 60+ year-old world-class anythings out there?
Your personal objectives should be competence - good enough. If you want to become a competitor, world-
class or otherwise, get a coach to help (or dissuade) you and let the instructors with 'happy talk' play with
newbies.

Events Locations and Directions using your Computer or Smart phone.
Just a reminder to those who are wondering where the next event is and the best way to get
there, by using your computer or smart phone its easy.
First you go to the chapter's website, WWW.GWRRAPAE.COM , you will see and Events
tab on the home page. Click on the Events tab and a Google calendar should appear. Click on
the date of the event you would like to attend. Information will come up on the screen which
will include the event with the time and address of the event. Then click on the word (map)
and Google maps should come up showing the location on a map, and then you can look for
directions by clicking on the Directions button to the left of the map. Enter your starting
location , hit enter, and watch the route and directions along with the estimated time, to
arrival appear. Give it a try. You can even send a text of the directions from this point in the
instructions.
If you have any problems just give me a call and I'll be glad to help if I can.
In some cases the destination will be seen on the side of the map and the website of the
establishment could be attached. Then you can see the information of the establishment such
as a menu or hours of operation.

Hello PA District Rally goers everywhere,
Well, here it is the middle of May and the PA Rally is now history. All the work and all the effort sweating the details are a wonderful memory now. What a grand time we had in State College. Looking around seeing everyone laughing and having fun was well worth the effort that the whole district team put into planning and working the details.
We started out Thursday night with a wonderful and hilarious show with the magic of Cliff and Kelly Hopkins. What great performers they are. When Cliff and Kelly show up to perform for our group they
really do a spectacular show. We laughed until we had tears streaming down our cheeks. This is even before Cliff brought me up on stage. Everyone goes away wondering how he does what he does. It seems that our humor feeds off each other.
On Friday Mother Nature supplied us with a beautiful sunny warm day. It was a perfect morning for Chapter I to host the outdoor Chapter games. Judging by the laughing I would say everyone had a wonderful time participating. Thank you Chapter I! After that there were games going on inside. Diane and
Jim Heffelfinger also hosted a bingo game in the atrium which was attended by many members. The seminars that were offered also were heavily attended It was also a beautiful day for everyone to head out for a ride and to see the beautiful countryside in Center County. After everyone returned home to the hotel, that’s when the fun continued. Ice cream was the first thing on the agenda Friday evening. After ice cream, we started getting our chapters on stage with the start of the PA District talent show. WOW what funny,
talented groups we have in our district. It was so entertaining that we noticed guests other than wingers were enjoying the show. We would like to thank everyone that participate in the show.
Saturday brought rain and cooler temperatures but that didn’t stop some people from trekking out on their bikes. Mostly everyone stayed at the hotel and either attended seminars or played games. The members that did stay in did got to enjoy our indoor and outdoor vendors. After the games, everyone took a break late in the afternoon to get ready for the Saturday night banquet. The red-carpet lead everyone into the
grand ballroom to the Saturday evening entertainment and meal. There we thanked our district team, region team, out of state team and our out of state chapters.
DISTRICT NOTES
I would like to thank all our vendors that came to support our rally. I would also like to thank Tiffany for coming to the rally and allowing everyone to ride the motorcycle simulator. The Skid Bike was also a big hit on Friday. It is something everyone should see. It is a motorcycle that has a frame assembly on it that will help new riders that never rode a motorcycle understand the basics of motorcycle riding. It should be put in to the
MSF program very soon according to the instructor that was there.
Another big hit with the membership was the No Zone tractor trailer that was there for our entertainment. I
never met 2 guys more passionate about what they do than truckers Tim and Gary. They did a wonderful program on what truck drivers see and don’t see, from the pilot seat of a tractor trailer. I can’t thank them enough for what they did at our rally.
I would like to take this time to thank each member of our chapters that came to the rally. Without you coming to participate there wouldn’t be a rally. Also, we must thank each member that helped with their chapter assignments. Again, there is no way we could have done it without you.
I would also like to thank our PA District Team for all the time and effort in making the 2017 PA Rally a tremendous success. Andi and I would never have been able to pull this off without their help and planning.
The 50/50 for both night were well worth buying some tickets. Both nights brought some members a nice nest egg.
At the Saturday night dinner, I made an announcement that come January Andi and I will be completing our tenure as District Directors. We would like to thank everyone for all the support and friendship that was giving to us for the last 3 years. We also announced that Harold and Diane Jackson will be taking over the
reigns as the new District Directors for 2018. I am sure the membership will appreciate their excitement and energy to take over the PA District. Harold and Diane came to the podium and announced the location for the 2018 PA Rally. Next year’s rally will be held at the Park Inn in Uniontown, PA. It looks like it’s looking like another exciting rally coming before you know it.
Sunday brought over a hundred members to the Nittany Room for the Chapter S gathering. Jim and Diane held a wonderful and short gathering. After the gathering, all the chapters in attendance got to take pictures for our Roll for the Dough program. Then it was time to bid State College adieu. It was a little cooler than earlier in
the week but at least the rain held off and hopefully everyone made it home warm and dry.
Again, we can’t thank everyone enough for the wonderful time everyone had.
