The annual challenge, whichwas held at the PaarlMetro basein Sanddrift Street for the firsttime since 2008, started on Tues-day and saw teams competing inatraumachallengeto test the fol-lowing: how they would handlepatients that have been throughatraumaticexperienceandneedmedical assistance, theirmentaland physical fitness, and an extricationchallenge, raised by the technicians them-selves in a situation under stress, wherepeople are trapped in or under a vehicle.

Funds for the challenge were raised by

the districts bases themselves, while spon-sorshipsanddonationswerealso received.Organisers of the event said all the teamsdid well, and stated that it was yet againa learning experience for everyone.

High blood pressure is killingSouth AfricansSouth Africans have one ofthe highest rates of hyper-tension worldwide.September being Heart

Awareness Month, theHeart and Stroke Founda-tion SA is encouragingSouthAfricans to “beat thepressure and get tested” byoffering free blood pres-sure tests to the public.Hypertension or high

blood pressure is called the“silent killer” for a reason.People do not usually showany signs or symptomsandonce they realise that theyhave high blood pressure,it is often too late. One inthreeSouthAfricanadults,15 years or older, has hy-pertension and the majori-tyof themareunaware thatthey have the condition.High blood pressure is

the leading cause of heartdisease and strokes. To celebrate Heart Aware-ness Month, the Heart and Stroke FoundationSA (HSF) in partnershipwithClicks, is offeringfree blood pressure tests for the public at allClicks Clinics nationwide, by appointment forthemonthofSeptember.EncouragingSouthAf-ricans to: “Beat the pressure. Get tested.”Along with this, the HSF is also encouraging

South Africans to lower their salt intake by fol-lowingsimplesteps, likeadding lesssalt to theirfood.“South Africans eat far too much salt, more

than double the recommended daily allow-ance,” says Dr Vash Mungal-Singh, CEO of theHeart and Stroke Foundation SA.Encouraging South Africans to lower their

salt intakeis importantbutthedangersofahighsalt diet must be addressed and that is whereSalt Watch steps in. Salt Watch is driven by amulti-sectoral coalition, supported by the Na-tional Department of Health, and is a memberof World Action on Salt and Health.

Fortunately, in 2013 the Minister of Healthsigned legislation to make salt reduction in thefood industry mandatory, helping to achievethe government’s target to reduce salt intaketo less than 5 g a day by 2020. This makes SouthAfrica the first country globally to legislate saltlevels to help reduce the amount of salt that thepublic takes in from processed foods.Every hour in South Africa, five people have

heart attacks, 10 peoplehave strokes and10peo-ple die from heart disease and stroke. The goodnews is that 80% of these premature deaths (be-fore the age of 60) can be prevented with ahealthy balanced diet, being physically activeregularly and avoiding smoking.Book an appointment at any Clicks Clinic for

Bemarking is soos boerderyDAVID MALHERBE

Boereweetookdatallesnienoodwendigmet

Plan ahead for final examsTests can be daunting be-cause they are such an im-portant part of your coursegrade, and knowing yourfaculty’s expectations canbe difficult.

One week before the ex-am, spend an hour readingthrough your notes.

Five days before the ex-am, start to create a masterstudy sheet with all of themajor topics that will be onthe test. This might be alist, outline, study guide, chart or a set of flash cardswith pictures.

From your master studysheet, identify the con-cepts that are the leastclear or most difficult foryou. Start your study with these topics. Planto review them several times, review your text,or get clarity during office hours.

Write and respond to practise exam questionsas practise for the real exam. You can even trywriting questions at different “levels” of under-standing.

Study for objective tests by practising and re-viewing material in different formats. Objec-tive tests include multiple choice, matching,fill-in-the-blank, and true/false questions. Ifyou can write on the test, cover up the suppliedanswers and write what you know. Use educat-ed guessing strategies if you are unsure of thematerial

Study for essay questions differently than forobjective questions. A well-written essay examanswers the question with a clear thesis, is richin content/evidence to support the thesis, andhas a logical progression of ideas that flowsmoothly. Taking time to set up the structureand think about the question (not just every-thing you know) before starting to write can

make a big difference in these three areas.Learn how to access your long-term memory.

Even with good preparation you must store andretrieve some information from your short-term memory. How do you remember songsfrom junior high? You’ve repeated the informa-tion so frequently that they are stored in yourlong-term memory. Storing class content infor-mation in your long-term memory can also helpyou retrieve it during an exam.

CalmDown.Testanxietyisthefeelingofnerv-ousness that students feel before and during anexam. Quality preparation and relaxation be-fore the exam can help reduce test anxiety.

Use last-minute study time strategically.Sometimes even the best plans fall through, andyou may be faced with having to cram for a test.
