ief OCEAN A LATE ENTRY
Ocean Park (Thorn Park), second in Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m), will be a late entry for the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on 14 April.
ROYAL ASCOT FOR ORTENSIAAl Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Ortensia (Testa Rossa) will now target the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) on the first day of Royal Ascot. “It [King’s Stand] looks like an ideal race. Either way she has to come home via England and they are keen to have us and we are keen to go,” said trainer Paul Messara. Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) is also being aimed at the King’s Stand.
TREBLE FOR WALLERTrainer Chris Waller saddled a winning treble at Randwick Kensington yesterday. He currently leads the Sydney Premiership with 88 wins his nearest rival is Gai Waterhouse on 64.
ADMIRATION TAKES TROPHY88th stakes winner for encosta
Having endured, by his
championship winning
standards, a somewhat lean
period, Encosta de Lago (Fairy
King) sired his second new stakes winner
in as many days when Admiration took the
Chairman’s Trophy (HK Gr 2) over 1600m
at Sha Tin on Sunday, writes Darryl Sherer.
Following the victory of Niagara in the
Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill
on Saturday, Admiration became stakes
winner number 88 with a determined neck
defeat of Glorious Days (Hussonet) with
the veteran Able One (Cape Cross) the
same distance away third in a three-way
finish to the $HK3 million event.
If trainer John Moore was unhappy
with the sedate pace in the Hong Kong
Derby (HK Gr 1, 2000m) he could have
no grumbles here with his own Able One
setting a strong pace, Admiration enjoyed
a clear passage along the inside in fourth

place in contrast to Glorious Days who was posted out three deep
at halfway.
Able One had a kick and was still clear with 200m to go,
Admiration and Glorious Days chasing hard, Admiration proving the
stronger under a strong drive from Brett Prebble and getting his
nose in front in the final strides to score, bumping with Glorious
Days near the post but no objection posted.
Admiration, who was winning for the first time over 1600m, sold
for $625,000 at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale
from the draft of Widden Stud to the bid of George Moore and he
races in the white, red and blue colours of Mr and Mrs Hui Sai
Fun, who enjoyed Group 1 success with Admiration’s close relative
Inspiration (Flying Spur), also trained by John Moore and the winner
of the 2008 Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin.
Admiration is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Provence,
winner of the Desirable Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington
and a daughter of Redoute’s Choice. Provence is herself a daughter
of La Bamba (Last Tycoon) who in addition to Provence, is the dam
of Inspiration and the Chester Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1400m)
winner and sire Lucky Unicorn, who is also by Redoute’s Choice.
Admiration is the first stakes winner by Encosta de Lago out
of a Redoute’s Choice mare but he has 10 stakes winners out of
mares by Danehill (8) and Flying Spur (2), headed by his last Group
1 winner, the 2011 Coolmore Classic (1500m) winner Aloha (out
of a Danehill mare), and the South African Group 1 winning juvenile
Delago Deluxe (out of a Flying Spur mare).
Admiration (4 h Encosta de Lago - Provence by Redoute’s
Choice) has now won seven of his 19 career starts and been
placed a further six times for earnings of HK$7,436,800. Widden
Stud will offer Provence’s yearling colt by More Than Ready as lot
343 in this month’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
BRIDGE’S SPRINT TROPHY
The following race on the nine race card saw New Zealand-bred
Little Bridge (Faltaat) score by a convincing two and a quarter length
margin in the Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (HK Gr 3, 1000m). Captain
Sweet (Fastnet Rock) finished second and New Vision (Bertolini)
was third, beaten a nose.
Sacred Kingdom missed the start whist Horse Galore set the
pace at the head of the field in the early stages. Little Bridge was
always prominent and he and California Choice took up the running
before LIttle Bridge asserted at the 100 metres and went clear
proving too strong for his rivals.
By the Westbury Stud-based Faltaat (Mr Prospector), Little
Bridge sold for NZ$9,000 as a weanling at the 2007 New Zealand
Bloodstock National Weanling Sale. Little Bridge (5 g Faltaat -
Golden Rose by Gold Brose) has now won eight of his 18 career
starts, been placed in a further three of those for earnings of
HK$9,578,750.

Monterosso (Dubawi) won the Dubai World Cup (Gr
1, 1m 2f), beating Capponi (Medicean) by three
lengths, giving Godolphin a memorable one-two in
the world’s richest race.
The first and second horses are both trained by Mahmood Al
Zarooni and Monterosso was ridden by Mickael barzalona.
In winning, Monterosso became the eighth Group 1 winner
for his sire Dubawi (Dubai Destination) and on crossing the line,
barzalona stood high in his stirrups, reminiscent of when he won
last year’s Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) aboard Pour Moi (Montjeu).
Planteur (Danehill Dancer) finished in third and So you Think
(High Chaparral) in fourth. Ridden by Aidan O’brien’s son Joseph,
So you Think failed to quicken in the straight and after the race,
O’brien said: “I had the ideal position behind the leader but he just
didn’t quicken on that surface. It was too dead for him.”
Sheikh Mohammed was visibly pleased with the victory and
was winning the race as he has done five times before in the 17
year history of the race.
“I couldn’t believe it when no one was coming after me [in
the straight],” barzalona said. “This is a dream. I have no words
to describe what I feel right now. “Asked about his dramatic
celebration on the line, he said: “I just had to, I had no choice.”
While Godolphin’s previous Dubai World Cup winners were prepared
by Saeed bin Suroor, Monterosso and Capponi gave their Dubai
based trainer Mahmoud Al Zarooni his biggest success.
After the race, trainer Marco botti said that Planteur’s jockey
Ryan Moore told him that Planteur should have finished closer.
“Ryan said he got a bump at the start and was further back than
he wanted to be.”
ORTENSIA IMPRESSES
The Paul Messara-trained and Craig Williams-ridden Ortensia
(Testa Rossa) won the Al Quoz Sprint (5f) by one and a quarter
lengths from Sole Power (Kyllachy), with the New Zealand-bred and
Hong Kong-trained Joy And Fun (Cullen) a neck further back in third.
The low-drawn runners set the early pace, headed by Monsieur
Joe (Choisir). Ortensia and Sole Power were both held up at the
back of the field and sprinted through late.
The winning time of 57.98 seconds was three-tenths of a
second outside the track record.
Ortensia has maintained a perfect three-for-three record since
joining Messara last year and the young trainer was overjoyed
saying: “I had my heart in my mouth. I can’t believe she has won it.
I jumped so high when she hit the line I lost my phone! At the 400m
I was sweating bullets because I thought she would be a lot closer
but Craig knew what he was doing. He knows her so well. She goes
to England in seven days and she is going to run in the King’s Stand
Stakes at Royal Ascot over the same distance.”
Williams returned to scale with the Australian flag draped over
his shoulders and was celebrating the first Aussie winner on World
Cup night since Elvstroem (Danehill) in the 2005 Dubai Duty Free.
“I have had 20 rides on the mare for four wins – she has been
unlucky in a few but she was brilliant today,” the winning rider said.
“We knew what her weaknesses were going but we also knew
her strengths and the race panned out perfectly. I was able to get
into clear running inside the last 300m and she had an explosive
turn of foot.”
The Michael Freedman-trained better be The One (More Than
Ready) finished in ninth, whilst the De Kock-trained Australian-bred
War Artist (Orpen) finished 11th.

AIGLES IN SHEEMA CLASSIC
French-trained Cirrus des Aigles (Even Top) won the Dubai
Sheema Classic (Gr 1). He was chased home by the Aidan O’brien-
trained St Nicholas Abbey (Montjeu), who was beaten a neck with
Jakkalberry (Storming Home) in third.
The winning trainer Corine barande-barbe said: “I knew he
would win – I said so in the morning! My horse is just marvelous
and it was my birthday yesterday. This is a big moment for me – it is
a dream which keeps getting better and better. I was confident and
I always knew Olivier would do the right thing. If the pace was not
fast then he would go from the front and if it was fast then he could
sit behind. Olivier let him go as the horse knows about racing and it
is a big deal to win this race. If the pace had been strong then the
horse would have finished.”
Joseph O’brien was aboard St Nicholas Abbey for his father,
Aidan, and rode a patient race before thundering down the home
run to take second.
A share of Jakkalberry, who is trained in Newmarket by Marco
botti, has recently been acquired by Australian connections. botti
said afterwards: “The plan would be eventually the Melbourne Cup
- he is qualified for it and he will get in”.
Australian-bred Mahbooba (Galileo) finished fifth.
AFRICAN STORY’S MILE
Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, African Story (Pivotal) won the
Godolphin Mile (Gr 2, 1m) by four lengths from Viscount Nelson
(Giant’s Causeway) with Red Jazz (Johannesburg) third.
Red Jazz lead for most of the race with African Story settled in
third on the rail. African Story took up the running coming into the
home straight and unleashed a blistering turn of foot to score by
four lengths. The Mike de Kock-trained Viscount Nelson rallied for
second while pacesetter Red Jazz held the third spot after making
the pace through sectional times of 25.54 for the first 400m and
48.93 for 800m.
African Story, the five-year-old son of Pivotal was ridden by
Frankie Dettori, who picks up his seventh win in the 1,600m race
that was clocked in 1:37.52.
Sitting in third in the early going, African Story rallied to the lead
near the 1,200m mark before drawing off to a four-length victory,
his fifth in 12 starts overall. “It was my banker of my night and it
was very easy,” said Dettori.
“I’ve always said this was our best chance of the night,” added
trainer Saeed bin Suroor - an eight-time winner in this race: “I was
really pleased how he looked coming into the race.”
CITYSCAPE IMPRESSES IN DUTY FREE
The Roger Charlton-trained Cityscape (Selkirk) showed a
blistering turn of foot at the top of the straight in the Dubai Duty
Free (G1, 9f) to win by four and a quarter lengths. This is the first
Group 1 victory for Cityscape, who finished a neck behind Able One
(Cape Cross) in his last start in the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m)
in December.
Await The Dawn raced in the lead, under Joseph O’brien, and
when he started to drop back through the field, Cityscape took over
and was asked to go a long way out. He came home in course
record time.
The winning trainer Roger Charlton said afterwards: “Everyone
keeps telling me the horse needs soft ground but he goes on
anything. What he really enjoys is racing on a flat, level track. If we’d
stayed at home we’d have had to keep avoiding Frankel [who is also
owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah]. It made sense to come here.”
Irish-bred Mutahadee (Encosta de Lago) finished in second with
City Style (City Zip) in third - a head separating them.
The John Moore-trained Xtension (Xaar) finished in fifth, Musir
(Redoute’s Choice) in sixth and Ambitious Dragon (Pins) seventh.
The other Hong Kong runner, California Memory (Highest Honor)
was 12th. Dubawi Gold (Dubawi) was withdrawn on veterinary
advice, just before he was due to be lead into the stalls, which
reduced the field to 15.

LONG LEGS IN UAE DERBY
Daddy Long Legs (Scat Daddy) won the uAE Derby (Gr 2, 1m
1-1/2f) by one and a quarter lengths from yang Tse Kiang (Kahyasi)
with breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 1m) winner Wrote (High
Chaparral) in third.
The early pace was set by Helmet, who had drawn wide in
barrier 14. Daddy Long Legs was in second and Wrote was also
prominent. Helmet set fractions of 26.13, 50.54 and 1:15.19
before tiring on turning for home finishing 12th in the 14-horse
field.
O’brien said his plan in bringing Daddy Long Legs and Wrote
to Dubai for the uAE Derby was to measure their potential for the
Group 1 Kentucky Derby. both colts ran well enough for further
consideration.
“He was a good colt last year and obviously this was his first
run of this season. He jumped and he travelled well,” O’brien said
of Daddy Long Legs
In winning, Daddy Long Legs became the first winner at Meydan
for Aidan O’brien.
KRYPTON FACTOR’S SHAHEEN
The Fawzi Nass-trained Krypton Factor (Kyllachy) won the Golden
Shaheen (Gr 1, 6f) by two and a quarter lengths from Rocket Man
(Viscount) with the Hong Kong-trained Lucky Nine (Dubawi) in third.
In winning Krypton Factor denied Rocket Man back-to-back wins in
the race.
Rocket Man broke alertly from gate 1 to take an early but never
uncontested lead. He was pressed all the way in the early stages
by u.S challenger Giant Ryan, who led briefly going into the turn
before Rocket Man reasserted.
At the head of the straight Rocket Man found more and looked
briefly to have shaken off the pursuing pack, but it was quickly
apparent that danger was lurking behind in the shape of Krypton
Factor, whom Fallon had launched in pursuit of the Singapore
champion. The gap narrowed and Krypton Factor ran on to wear
down the long-time leader, and win a shade cosily at the wire.
The win marked a first thoroughbred success at the Dubai
World Cup for the Kingdom of bahrain, and afterwards a delighted
Fawzi Nass said: “He had never faced competition as tough as this,
but we still felt confident going into the race. We knew there would
be a lot of pace, so thought it would be best to sit off it.
“Then Kieren angled him out and that was that. We may go
to Singapore next and we’ll be thinking about Royal Ascot as well
depending on how things go.”
Rocket Man’s jockey Felix Coetzee was gracious in defeat,
saying: “He’s such a professional. Going to the start he was
composed and knew exactly what was going on. He flew out so
fast and landed in front and was going well in front, though he was
being pressed by the American horse, which wasn’t ideal, but he
never stopped.”
Sepoy (Elusive Quality) finished tenth and Soul (Commands)
last in the12-horse field.
OPINION POLL HANGS ON IN EvENTFUL GOLD CUP
Godolphin’s Opinion Poll (Halling) won a rather eventful Dubai
Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2m) which was run at the end of the card after Fox
Hunt (Dubawi), who finished seventh in last year’s Melbourne Cup
(Gr 1, 3200m), was fatally injured in the early stages of the race
when it was first staged earlier in the day.
Joshua Tree was a fast finishing second under Johnny Murtagh
and Zanamar (Fort Wood) was third.
The rerun of the race was also marred by the death of bronze
Cannon (Lemon Drop Kid) and Grand Vent (Shirocco), who was also
lost.

The final field for Saturday’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)
is taking shape with Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
winner All Too Hard (Casino Prince) yet to be confirmed
for the race, but now joining Samaready (More Than
Ready) for favouritism at $3.00.
Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Ichihara (General
Nediym) is now exempt from the ballot but her owner / breeder
George Altomonte would have to pay a $150,000 late entry fee to
run the Allan Denham-trained filly.
The John O’Shea trained Shelford (Redoute’s Choice) is on the
clasp of gaining a place in the field and if he does Hong Kong-based
Australian jockey brett Prebble is on standby to ride him in the
Golden Slipper.
Shelford is just outside the 16-horse field with final decisions
on Saturday’s two-year-old winners All Too Hard and Ichihara yet to
be made.
“If he is an emergency then we will look at someone locally but
if he gets in brett Prebble will ride,” O’Shea said.
O’Shea already has Faustus (More Than Ready) and Ashokan
(More Than Ready) safely in the field with Jim Cassidy and James
McDonald their respective riders.
Gerald Ryan will also have three runners in Amorino (Snitzel),
Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward) and Snitzerland (Snitzel) while Gai
Waterhouse will have four.
The Waterhouse runners are No Looking back (Redoute’s
Choice), Driefontein (Fastnet Rock), Pierro (Lonhro) and Raceway
(More Than Ready).
but while weight of numbers are with those three trainers,
weight of money is with the Nathan Tinkler-owned All Too Hard
from the Hawkes training team and Samaready from the Mick Price
stable.
Samaready held sway after her blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) win while All Too Hard kept his unbeaten record intact with
win number three in the Pago Pago.
Senior training partner John Hawkes said the colt had come
through the race well and he and Tinkler would make the final
decision on a start by Tuesday morning.
On Sunday the two were locked at $3 with Pierro at $7.50 and
No Looking back at $9.
Premier trainer Chris Waller is looking forward to having his first
runner in the race in Jade Marauder (Fastnet Rock) after Fast And
Sexy (Fastnet Rock) was scratched at the barrier last year.
Glyn Schofield will ride Jade Marauder who cemented her place
with victory in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on 17
March.
The all-important barrier draw for the Slipper will be conducted
around midday on Tuesday.
IGGIG TO BACK UP IN TULLOCH
Iggi Pop (Savabeel), impressive winner at Randwick Kensington
on Sunday, is set to back up in Saturday’s Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2,
2000m) at Rosehill.
Iggi Pop was only have his second start in Australia and third
overall. The former New Zealander has emerged as a classics
contender for trainer John O’Shea.
“I don’t know if he would back up three weeks in a row to the
Derby but there are other Derbys,” O’Shea said.
“I’m excited by him.
“James McDonald is booked to ride in the Tulloch.
“The Frank Packer Plate at the end of the Sydney carnival would
also be a nice race.
The South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and Queensland
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) are run in May and June respectively.
Iggi Pop is by 2004 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Savabeel
(Zabeel), who was runner-up to Plastered (Laranto) in that year’s
Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).
Later on the card the Chris Waller trained Eliza blues (O’Reilly)
impressed in taking out the Hyland Race Colours Handicap over
1550m and her long range aim could be the Queensland Oaks (Gr
1, 2400m) over the brisbane winter carnival.
“The Queensland Oaks is the race we have in mind for her,”
Waller said.
“There is a race in brisbane in about three weeks which could
suit her for her next start.”
Eliza blues broke her maiden at Canterbury on 16 March at her
fifth start.
On Sunday she finished strongly to beat Our Design (Stratum)
by three-quarters of a length.
Waller’s other winners were European import Kelinni (Refuse To
bend), who he purchased for 80,000gns at the 2010 Tattersalls
Autumn Horses in Training Sale in Newmarket and another former
New Zealander baranski (O’Reilly).
Kelinni is among the entries for the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
on 28 April but Waller said that was an unlikely target.
“I think that might come around too soon for him,” he said.
“These imported horses can take a while to reach their top.”
Kelinni won a two-year-old race in England and has registered
another three in Australia.

Margins: 1.5 lens, 1.5 lens. Time: 1:04.44 (last 600m 34.52).
Analysis: Ciao led throughout and fought hard in the straight to
prove too strong on the line. The race was run to suit Ciao, but this
was a good strong win over the colts. ptolemy raced on the winners
quarters in the run and challenged for the lead in the straight,
he tired a little over the final 100m. Hoffenhorry ran well, he was
trapped three wide without cover in sixth position. He battled on
strongly for third in the straight.

had a little look around on straightening, but when asked to quicken
he responded and raced away to a soft win. This was only his third
