The Warwick Farm-based trainer turned to jockey Ben Melham, who won the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on Secret Lady’s stablemate She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) this year, to ride the daughter of Choisir (Danehill Dancer).

Melham attempted to ride the $150,000 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale graduate, who was also runner-up at her first start at Rosehill on 11 November, behind the speed in yesterday’s barrier trial but the filly possesed too much brilliance and held the front in the hit out.

She defeated three-year-old Goldfinch (Written Tycoon) by a neck, with the unraced Excelling (Manhattan Rain) another four lengths away in third in a time of 46 seconds.

“She has had a little freshen up and we have been pretty easy on her, so the plan was to get her to settle in behind a few horses and see how she would relax, but unfortunately in these trials they often don’t go fast enough,” Portelli told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“My hope was, by putting her up against older horses, that there might have been something that may have been able to cross her but as it worked out, at least we can get a line on her form as she trialled against some handy horses and ran exceptionally fast time.”

The multiple Group One-winning trainer said Secret Lady was showing similar traits to She Will Reign at the same stage of their careers.

“She is at a similar stage to She Will Reign, not so much ability wise, but that she is a jump and run two-year-old like She Will Reign was,” he said.

“She won the Inglis race leading this time last year and primarily a leader at that point, so everyone thought, but once she got into her

preparation and she got up in grade she was able to take a sit because there were faster horses around her.

“We are probably going to see the same thing with Secret Lady. We’ll turn up at Randwick (next week) and I hope there will be a few speedy horses in it to get that opportunity to take a sit.”

Secret Lady is set to run in a $100,000 two-year-old plate (1100m) at Randwick on 30 December as her final lead-up start before the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

“From what I have seen so far for the Magic Millions it looks like Tony Gollan’s Ef Troop is a jump and run horse and I would hate to be thinking we have to lead to win because I think we would both come unstuck,” he said.

Portelli elected to bypass tomorrow’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) with Secret Lady, preferring to run her with a two-week gap leading into the Gold Coast race.

“I was never going to Wyong with her, and while I think the Wyong race is great, for me three weeks between runs would have been too much with this filly,” he said.

“I can tell you she is a fatty and was as big as a house before today’s trial. We had freshened her up since her last start and when we saddled her up for the trial and paraded her you could see how much improvement was left in her.

“She is one of those horses who you couldn’t go easy on leading up to a good race. It was the same with She Will Reign as she needed to run in the Reisling Stakes before the Slipper on the heavy track. Continued on page 3>>

“There was no way you could have gone a month between runs trying to get her to run 1200 metres, she would have been too fat.”

Portelli also confirmed yesterday that Melham would ride Secret Lady for the remainder of her campaign, replacing apprentice Lee Magorrian who has ridden the filly in her two race starts so far.

“Ben is my go-to man at the top level. He has won two Group Ones for me, so I have worked out we are a good combination,” he said.

“He is a cool cat but he frustrates me a bit because we are opposite in terms of our demeanour. I want things done a minute before I have told someone to do it and I am a very diligent person, where he is so laidback. He offsets my personality on race day.”

Meanwhile, Portelli said three-year-old stablemate Single Bullet (Not A Single Doubt) will be lining up in tomorrow’s Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m).

The talented colt, who was runner-up in three consecutive stakes races in the spring, suffered severe interference at Rosehill on 9 December over 1100 metres when finishing last behind Test The World (Testa Rossa).

Portelli said Single Bullet had remarkably come through the incident unscathed, but believes the consequences could have been far worse.

“When you watch the replay a few times, particularly in slow motion, his leg buckled in behind him and you can see how their legs can snap. It could have been a horse ambulance job,” he said.

“Miraculously, he has come through it so well that we can’t pick

anything wrong with him. I gave him a gallop on Saturday morning and he looked good stretching out beautifully.”

Portelli said Dr Gary Christou, a part-owner of Single Bullet, had also inspected the colt to ensure there were no long-lasting effects from the incident.

“Gary Christou is a human and horse chiropractor, and he travelled the world with Takeover Target so he knows his stuff, and he flew straight down on the Monday to have at look at him and he could not believe how lucky we were with the way he came through the run,” he said.

Tye Angland will ride Single Bullet at Wyong.“Taking on older horses is probably a bit of a question mark, and

Arbeitsam is well handicapped, but over 1200 metres hopefully we are a bit sharper than him,” he said.

Portelli said Single Bullet would have to run well at Wyong to book a spot in the $2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on 13 January.

“For $2,000,000 you have to have a look at it, but he would want to really jump out of the ground on Thursday for me to commit to a start up there,” he said.

“I have that gut feeling that he is a better 1200 metres horse.”Four-year-old stablemate Hutcho (Congrats), who won at

Muswellbrook two starts ago, is also accepted for $100,000 Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes.

Eight for Wyong Magic Millions 2YO ClassicEight juveniles yesterday accepted for tomorrow’s $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) headed by unbeaten Jonker (Spirit Of Boom) and well-bred colt Bondi (Snitzel). The David Atkins-trained Jonker, who won the Max Lees Classic (900m) on 3 December at Newcastle, has drawn barrier seven and was installed as the $3.10 second elect. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Bondi, who was runner-up in the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m), drew barrier five and is a $4.40 chance. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Terminology (Star Witness), who drew barrier four, has opened as the $2.60 favourite on the back of a ten and a quarter length Rosehill barrier trial victory on 8 December. Click here to view tomorrow’s Wyong acceptances.

Trap For Fools accepts for ATA StakesIn-form Lindsey Smith-trained four-year-old Trap For Fools (Poet’s Voice) could line up in today’s $100,000 ATA Stakes (Listed, 2200m) at Ascot and then back up in the Ted Van Heemst Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) on Saturday. Trap For Fools, who has won nine of his 20 starts, has won seven of his past eight starts including the Tattersall’s Cup (Listed, 2100m) and the G A Towton Cup (Listed, 2200m) at his past two starts. Smith has indicated Trap For Fools, who will have ten rivals today including Zarantz (Choisir) and Dark Alert (Testa Rossa), was likely to back up again on Saturday after today’s race. Click here to view today’s Ascot acceptances. Hellova Street to line up in Tasmanian StakesChatham Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Hellova Street (Helike) will be out to return to winning

form in tonight’s Tasmanian Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Launceston. The Scott Brunton-trained seven-year-old suffered a shock defeat as the $1.30 favourite in the Conquering Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on 6 December, a race won by I’m Wesley (I Am Invincible). Hellova Street, who has drawn barrier seven in the field of eight, will again be ridden by Luke Currie. He is up against Conquering Stakes third placegetter Gee Gees Top Notch (Wordsmith), fourth-placed Killin Falls (Savoire Vivre) and the well-travelled recent Moonee Valley winner Brilliant Jet (Brilliant Leader). Click here to view the Launceston acceptances.

Sunlight to chase Millions berthMaribyrnong Trial (Listed, 1000m) placed filly Sunlight (Zoustar), who was scratched from Saturday’s Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1110m) at Doomben due to a wide barrier, is set to line up in a 900 metres juvenile race at the Gold Coast on Saturday. The Tony McEvoy-trained filly is being aimed at next month’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). “We need prize money and this looks a good race to get it. The 900 metres around the Gold Coast should suit her really well,” McEvoy said. “It would have been a waste of time running her at Doomben and surely she can’t draw the outside barrier again.” Click here to view Saturday’s Gold Coast weights.

Imperial Aviator sent to MelbourneLightly raced European import Imperial Aviator (Paco Boy) has been sent to Melbourne for a race at Moonee Valley on Saturday after scoring a break-through victory at Rosehill over 2400 metres on 2 December. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained five-year-old made his Australian debut at Randwick in June, finishing second last, before an improved performance when runner-up at Rosehill on 18 November over 2000 metres. Imperial Aviator is

@anz_news

nominated for a 2500 metres race at Moonee Valley on Saturday. “He’s a horse we’re thinking of as a long-term prospect next spring so that’s part of the reason he’s down there now,” Bott said. “There’s plenty of nice races for him up here but we wanted to give him that experience of travelling down to Melbourne and settling into that environment.” Valley to suit SirbibleA number of setbacks have seen talented sprinter Sirbible (God’s Own) sidelined since a promising first up performance at Moonee Valley on 28 October, but the Russell Bell-trained six-year-old is expected to line up over 1000 metres at the same course on Saturday. Sirbible ran fifth to Gun Case (War Pass) over 955 metres when attacked on the speed and a series of mishaps have prevented him from racing since. "I thought his first-up run was exceptional. He was taken on by the Tasmanian horse (Gee Gees Jet)," Bell told Racing.com. "If that was a 955 metres (55 Second Challenge) race, he probably wins. I'd say he's going as good, if not better, than last season (when he won the Challenge in 54.84s)." Click here to view Saturday’s Moonee Valley weights.

Pipeline on the improveWell-bred four-year-old Pipeline (Redoute’s Choice) could be poised to deliver on his talent this campaign, with the entire set to have his third run back from a spell at Warwick Farm over 1200 metres on Saturday. Pipeline, who has finished third and second in two starts this campaign, is out of Dances On Waves who Ryan trained to win the 2010 Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and the trainer thinks the four-year-old may get up to a similar distance. "He has started over 1500 metres before and just got beaten," Ryan said. "After that he hurt himself so we have started again. He is going really well and only just got beaten last time. Jay Ford will ride him again." Click here to view Saturday’s Warwick Farm weights.

My Song to make long-awaited debutTrainer Gary Moore is relieved promising three-year-old My Song (Your Song) is finally ready to have his first start in an 1100 metres maiden at Canterbury today after two barrier trials this preparation. "He had a setback and he's just needed time. We've got him to the post at last and this is a good starting point for him," Moore said. The Rosehill trainer's long-standing association with part-owners owners Bob Lapointe and David Boehm resulted in him getting to prepare a horse sired by Group One winner Your Song (Fastnet Rock) for the first time. “I like the breed and I think the stallion is going to go really well," Moore said. Click here to view today’s Canterbury acceptances.

Fine Evader ready for 2400 metresRejuvenated six-year-old Fine Evader (Dylan Thomas) will step up to 2400 metres for just the second time in his career at Sandown Hillside today. Trained by Dan O’Sullivan at Ballarat, Fine Evader has won two of his past four starts in Benchmark 58 grade and was runner-up over 2025 metres at Kyneton in Benchmark 64 Handicap company on 7 December. “I sent him around at Kyneton the other day in a 2000-metre race as otherwise it would have three weeks between runs,” O’Sullivan said. “He competed nicely in 64 grade so it helped prove to me that he was up to it. He’s an out-and-out stayer and his form says that. He never performs until he gets to 2000 metres and beyond and his form at 2000 metres is quite solid.” Click here to view today’s Sandown Hillside acceptances.

15 entered for Summer CupThe Summer Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day has received 15 nominations including Red Excitement (Excites), Testashadow (Testa Rossa) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained stablemates Dark Eyes (Snitzel) and Dee I Cee (Istidaad). In-form European import Ashkannd (Sinndar), who has won his past two starts at Canterbury and Warwick Farm for trainer Richard Litt, veteran stayer Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny) and four-year-old Lord Kingsley (I Am Invincible) are also nominated for the $150,000 race. Click here to view Tuesday’s Randwick nominations.

Global Glamour wins trialDual Group One winner Global Glamour (Star Witness) tuned up for her tilt at the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m) race at the Gold Coast on 13 January by winning a Warwick Farm barrier trial yesterday. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained four-year-old, who raced twice in Melbourne during the spring, won heat five over 795 metres with Brenton Avdulla taking the ride. Global Glamour settled outside the leader My Maher (Al Maher) before winning by a head in 47 seconds. Stablemate Our Crown Mistress (Star Witness) was scratched from her Warwick Farm barrier trial but is set to barrier trial next week and run first up in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m).

Legislation wins trialBrilliant Kirkham Plate (1000m) winner Legislation (Not A Single Doubt) made his first public appearance since the dominant victory at Randwick on 21 October with an impressive Gosford barrier trial performance yesterday. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained two-year-old colt, who is being aimed at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, won heat six over 800 metres, immediately finding the lead on the fence for jockey Josh Parr. Legislation kicked clear at the top of the straight to win by four lengths in 49.17 seconds on a Good 4 surface. The Kris Lees-trained Ruling Symbol (More Than Ready) finished second, with the Paul Perry-trained Sassy Charlie (Myboycharlie) a neck away in third place.

Frankel filly runs second in trialIn heat eight at Gosford barrier trials yesterday, the Kris Lees-trained Miss Fabulass, a juvenile daughter by Frankel (Galileo) out of star filly Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice), was runner-up in her first public appearance. Bred and owned by John Singleton’s Strawberry Hill Stud, Miss Fabulass was slightly slowly away in the 800 metres barrier trial before working up to second behind leader and winner, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Morpheus (Snitzel). The colt won by one and a half lengths over Miss Fabulass, the fourth foal out of Samantha Miss, with Salsa Man (I Am Invincible) another one and a half lengths

away in third place. Click here to view the Gosford barrier trial replays.

Capital Gain wins trialThree-year-old Capital Gain (Ad Valorem), who won the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in June at Eagle Farm, won a 1200 metres barrier trial at Deagon yesterday. The Paul Butterworth-trained gelding, who ran sixth first up to Pierata (Pierro) at Doomben on 2 December, defeated Saint Patricks Day (Excelebration) by a head with Jim Byrne taking the ride. Capital Gain is expected to line up in the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben on 30 December.

Menari back in workRun To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) winner and Group One-placed colt Menari (Snitzel) has returned to trainer Gerald Ryan’s Rosehill stables. The colt, who ran third in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on 23 September behind stablemate Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), underwent a throat operation after his last start. Menari could be aimed at The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill first up in the autumn.

Australian Guineas target for Royal SymphonyClassy three-year-old Royal Symphony (Domesday), who ran fourth in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on 28 October before being spelled, is soon to transfer to trainer Tony McEvoy’s Flemington base. The colt spelled in South Australia and has been in early training at Kildalton Park but will be sent to Victoria to be prepared for the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. McEvoy won this year’s race with Hey Doc (Duporth).

Doncaster aim for Crack Me UpVilliers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Crack Me Up (Mossman) is likely to target the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick following Saturday’s Group Two success. The in-form Liam Birchley-trained four-year-old could race on this campaign at the Magic Millions carnival at the Gold Coast before being set for The Championships. Birchley says he is keen to avoid the Queensland Winter Carnival with Crack Me Up due to Eagle Farm being out of action.

Brave Smash also likely for DoncasterJapanese import Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) has returned to training with Darren Weir and is expected to be aimed at the Doncaster Mile in Sydney during the autumn. The Australian Bloodstock-owned five-year-old entire raced four times last preparation, his first campaign in Australia, for a Listed win and a third in the $10,000,000 The Everest (1200m) at Randwick.

McEvoy undergoes hand surgerySydney-based jockey Kerrin McEvoy has undergone surgery on a hand injury but there is no timeframe for his return. McEvoy broke a bone in his hand in a pre-race mishap at Randwick on Saturday when he was taking Sugar Bella (Not A Single Doubt) to the barriers. Racing NSW's Dr David Duckworth said the operation had gone well. McEvoy will miss the rich Magic Millions race day on 13 January but will hopefully be back for The Everest winner Redzel's (Snitzel) return. The sprinter is scheduled to return in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington on 17 February.

Edmonds wins media awardGold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds has won the fifth annual Queensland Racing Media Association's award for personality of the year. Edmonds received the award at a function attended by trainers, jockeys, racing officials and the media. The award is given to the person in racing judged to have given the sport the highest profile in a year through performances on and off the racetrack. Edmonds trained Houtzen (I Am Invincible) to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic but also had the best strike rate of any trainer in Queensland, finishing second on the Brisbane premiership last season. "It has been a good couple of years and I obviously hope we can continue with it," Edmonds said.

Eagle Farm track manager quitsSean Bridges, the track manager for the trouble-plagued Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane, has resigned. Bridges has been in charge of Eagle Farm, which underwent a failed $10,000,000

redevelopment in 2014, for about five years. He met with Brisbane Racing Club officials earlier this week about a possible restructure of the track management during next year's remedial work on the troubled Eagle Farm course. Bridges, who was due to go on holidays tomorrow, sent his resignation to the BRC yesterday which caught officials by surprise. BRC chairman Neville Bell confirmed Bridges had resigned but emphasised he had not been dismissed.

Late Charge allowed to trialThe Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will allow Late Charge (Hard Spun) to perform in two barrier trials before determining whether the gelding is fit to race again. Late Charge has not raced since finishing fourth in the Regal Roller Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield in August 2015. On June 8, Racing Victoria stewards advised the gelding’s new trainer Daniel McCarthy they would reject all future nominations of Late Charge on the grounds it was unacceptable for the gelding to race from a welfare or safety perspective because of an injury to his digital flexor tendon. The RAD Board heard an appeal by McCarthy yesterday and issued an interim order that allows Late Charge to participate in two official trials. The Board will then resume once Late Charge has completed the two trials.

Shinn questioned over Star Sensation rideSydney jockey Blake Shinn has been questioned at length in camera at an ongoing inquiry into his ride on Star Sensation (Star Witness) in a race at Rosehill on 25 November. Shinn and apprentice Andrew Adkins, who rode Burden Of Proof (Star Witness), again appeared before Racing NSW stewards yesterday over tactics in the Rosehill race. Adkins, who attended with his master Ron Quinton, was told stewards had no further questions for him but might need to call on him at a later date. Evidence was also given by Racing NSW chief investigator Nathan Hayward and betting analyst Mitchell Reid.

Sadler considers appealing suspensionCaulfield trainer John Sadler is considering whether to appeal a six-week improper conduct penalty at the Victorian Civil Administrative

Tribunal. Sadler was on Monday handed the ban by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board after pleading guilty to charges laid by stewards in relation to his conduct over the scratching of Observational (Galileo) from the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sandown on 18 November. He was charged following comments made during a phone conversation with chief steward Terry Bailey on race morning and again to Bailey and deputy chairman Robert Cram at Sandown later that day. “John will consider pursuing an appeal at VCAT and seek a stay of penalty prior to the full hearing,” Sadler’s solicitor Peter Jurkovsky said.

Trackwork rider injuredTrackwork rider Harry Cruickshank suffered a clavicle fracture after his horse broke down during exercise yesterday. Cruickshank, who also suffered a swollen ankle in the incident, will see a specialist today with a strong possibility that he may require surgery.

New Zealand

Devise no Zabeel certaintyTrainer Shaune Ritchie has said that Devise (Darci Brahma) is not a certain starter in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 200m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Ritchie has said he will monitor the mare over the next couple of days before making a decision on whether she will line up in the Group One. “They were genuine Group One horses that beat her and it was quite a hard run on Saturday, if she’s well that’s where she’ll go,” said Ritchie. “Otherwise the Trentham Stakes will suit her beautifully. She’ll get in with 53 kilograms and she’s won at Wellington and ran second in the Oaks there to Bonneval.” Devise was last seen running fourth in the Cal Isuzu Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Te Rapa.

Hasahalo right for Eight Carat ClassicTrainer Stephen McKee has said New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Hasahalo (Savabeel) is in good peak ahead of her next assignment in the Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m). The Group One winner furthered her preparation for the Group Two with a 1000 metre hit-out between races at Ellerslie on Sunday. “She won’t have had a race for five weeks by the time we get to the Eight Carat so we gave her a gallop,” McKee said. “She’s doing well.”

Railway for Irish MoonAfter recording the tenth victory of his career at Awapuni on Saturday, co-trainers Ken and Bev Kelso have said Irish Moon (O’Reilly) could now line up in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. Irish Moon finished seventh in the Group One last year. “He’s still in the Railway and he will get 55 kilograms under the set weights and penalty conditions,” Ken Kelso said. “If he drew an alley he would be a chance. He’s just a good, honest campaigner.”

Rich Hill for Charles RoadGroup Three winner Charles Road (Myboycharlie) will likely line up in the Rich Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained four-year-old gelding won the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) last April and secured his first victory since that win when he took out a Benchmark 85 (1600m) at Pukekohe on 6 December. “We’re going to run him in the Rich Hill Mile on New Year’s Day, he’ll come in well at the weights,” Scott said. “His last start was really encouraging and back on good ground he was able to quicken like we know he can.”

Wellington Cup carnival for Asama BlueCo-trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie are hoping they can add black type to the CV of well-bred mare Asama Blue (Fastnet Rock). The Sir Peter Vela-owned four-year-old was last seen running fifth in the Cal Isuzu Stakes and will now be aimed at the Anniversary Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham on 13 January. “There’s the Group Three Anniversary Handicap and then we’ll assess her after that,” Ramsay said of the Sir Peter Vela-owned mare. “She’s by Fastnet Rock out of a Sadler’s Wells mare so if we can get black type she will be very valuable.”

Crack Me Up’s brother to be offered at KarakaCasey and Michelle Dando of Bradbury Park will be hoping Crack Me Up’s (Mossman) recent win in the Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Randwick last Saturday can provide added interest when the gelding’s Reliable Man (Dalakhani) half-brother goes through the ring during Book One of the Karaka National Yearling Sale in January. Catalogued as Lot 111, the colt is out of the

Listed-winning mare Chuckle (Danehill) and all her seventh foals to race all have been winners, including Crack Me Up. Bradbury Park will offer 19 yearlings in Book One and a further nine in Book One at Karaka, which gets underway on 28 January. Click here to view the catalogue.

Hurdle to ride in NZJockey Ryan Hurdle will make a brief return to riding in New Zealand during his Christmas holiday. The former Awapuni apprentice, who is now based at Adelaide in Australia, will be back in action on his old home course at the Manawatu meeting on 23 December and on Boxing Day. “I’m looking forward to catching up with family and friends and getting as many rides as I can,” Hurdle said. “I transferred my apprenticeship to Rob Heathcote in Brisbane and that was good, but I’ve found my niche in Adelaide.”

Asia

Fantastic Eight looks to follow upJockey Umberto Rispoli is hoping Fantastic Eight (Duporth) can follow up his last start victory in the American Club Challenge Cup (1200m) in November when he takes his chance in a Class Two handicap (1200m) at Happy

Valley today. The Ricky Yiu-trained gelding has never finished out of the first two in eight Hong Kong starts and heads into the midweek feature with a perfect course and distance record. “There are a few fast horses in the race so that could be a little bit against him,” the Italian said. “Fabulous One is a fast horse, Wah May Friend from the outside will probably try to go forward with the apprentice on, and there is Almababy, too, who likes to go forward. But Fantastic Eight is a horse that thrives on speed.”

Frankel sires first jumps winnerThe Juddmonte Farm-based Frankel (Galileo) sired his first winner over the jumps yesterday when Solo Saxophone took out a juvenile hurdle at Catterick. The three-year-old colt was purchased by Brendan Bashford and Ryan Mahon for €62,000 at the Goffs Horses in Training Sale, having previously been trainer by Dermot Weld, for whom he ran five times and finished in the frame on four occasions. The Dan Skelton-trained colt is out of Grade Three winner Society Hostess (Seeking The Gold), who is herself a sister to Truth Seeking, the dam of dual Grade One winner Emerging Talent (Broken Vow).

The Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) is a quality handicap run at Randwick just before Christmas each year and has a history dating back to 1892.

Named after an early Governor of New South Wales, Victor Albert George Child Villiers, the Earl of Jersey, the race has gained in stature in recent years as the winner becomes exempt from a ballot to run in the following autumn’s rich Doncaster (Gr 1, 1600m).

The 2016 and 2015 Villiers winners, Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) and Happy Clapper (Teofilo), both went on to win Group Ones and it remains to be seen if last Saturday’s 2017 winner Crack Me Up (Mossman) can emulate them but the Queensland-trained gelding already has quite a good record with four earlier black-type successes to his credit.

Many earlier Villiers winners were not horses of great class but the race’s honour roll since 1945 features a sprinkling of high quality horses such as Soho Square (Jugah), Rising Prince (Round Top), Western Australian star Raconteur (Remarc), Carioca (Felt Yet) and the mighty Bernborough (Emborough).

Now likely to have his next start in the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on 13 January, Crack Me Up on Saturday produced an exciting late charge to head runaway leader Cabeza De Vaca (Northern Meteor) close to home, scoring a little softly on the line by a long neck with the promising Interlocutor (Medaglia d’Oro) a strong finishing and close up third in 1:34.98.

Crack Me Up was foaled in New Zealand but conceived in NSW, bred by NSW residents Rob and

Jenny Ferguson and sold through the Glastonbury Farms consignment at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast January Yearling Sale for $60,000, a value price considering his pedigree.

Group One winner Mossman (Success Express), the Vinery Stud-based veteran sire of Crack Me Up, has never received the respect he deserves, perhaps as a result of having a number of homes since beginning his breeding career in 2000.

From the start, Mossman has been a consistent source of high-class winners, leaving 40 stakes winners headed by the outstanding sprinter Buffering (earner of $7.22 million) and Golden Slipper Stakes winner Mossfun, whose deeds as a two-year-old made Mossman the champion Australian sire of juveniles in the 2013/14 season.

Ofcourseican, Plucky Belle and Miss Mossman are other Group One winners sired by Mossman, whose Group Two-winning son Love Conquers All, three-time runner-up in Group One contests, has made a very promising start to his stud career in Queensland and is a far more imposing individual than his father.

Crack Me Up is the ninth foal out of the smart performer Chuckle (Danehill) who, after an earlier mating with Mossman, produced Hoofit, a stakes winner in New Zealand and later at Keeneland in the United States. Chuckle has remained in New Zealand and has also produced a two-year-old filly named Leading Girl (Reliable Man) and a yearling colt by the same young sire entered for the 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka.

Chuckle won the Scone Dark Jewel Classic (Listed, 1400m) and an 1100 metre two-year-old race at Rosehill Gardens and was seven times stakes-placed up to Group Two level.

Danehill mares like Chuckle have worked very well with Mossman as New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Miss Mossman, Under The Eiffel, Absalon and Macau Horse of the Year Wonder Mossman (named Racing Eight in Australia) are all bred on the same cross, while other Mossman stakes winners Dothraki and Traitor are out of mares by Danehill’s champion-sire son Flying Spur.

Bred for speed, Chuckle is from 950 metre Moonee Valley juvenile winner Clowning (Rory’s Jester), a three-quarter sister to Catnipped (Rory’s Jester) and Miss Prospect (Rory’s Jester), which makes her closely related to prominent Victorian sire Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel) and to Golden Slipper Stakes winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel), tracing back to influential Irish mare Latest Edition (Solferino).

Latest Edition is remembered in Australasia as the dam of champion New Zealand sire and broodmare sire Sovereign Edition (Sovereign Path) while her dam Celestial Light (Donatello II) is equally recognised for producing the prolific former champion Queensland sire Smokey Eyes (Stardust).

Crack Me Up is distantly linebred to Solferino (Fairway) but more closely to breed shaper Northern Dancer (Nearctic) and he also carries duplications of names such as Tom Fool (Menow), Hyperion (Gainsborough) and the stayer Alycidon (Donatello II).

VERDICT Idyllic Wind came good for his new stable with a narrow-marginsuccess over C&D five weeks ago and remains well handicapped

on some of last season’s form but preference is for WINFULL PATROL, who was avery creditable third from stall 12 in that race and is berthed in the inside stall thistime. Highland Dragon is next on the list.

VERDICT Kirov is respected after last month’s pleasing seasonal debut ondirt but there might still be more to come from JUNZI, who kept

on strongly to score over 5f here in September and is not fully exposed over 6f.Doctors Delight ran well here last month and will be dangerous if the first-timeblinkers have a positive effect.

VERDICT There could easily be more to come from Cheerfuljet, whogained his breakthrough win over C&D three weeks ago.

However, the most interesting runner is PADDINGTON, who has posted some veryrespectable efforts this season and, with the assistance of excellent 7lb claimerMatthew Poon, can exploit his plum draw if he responds well to first-time blinkers.Numero Uno and Starlot are others to consider.
