PINHOOKING RESULTS | SALES RESULTS BY SIRE | SALES TABLES
Records were broken with two
seven-figure colts related to top-
class sprinters yesterday becoming
the highest-priced horses ever
sold in an online auction, as a remarkable
thoroughbred market defied wider economic
calamity caused by a global health crisis on
day one of the “virtual” Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling Sale.
Witnessed by viewers from 99 different
countries and six continents, the digital Easter
showpiece saw a So You Think (High Chaparral)
half-brother to Group 2 winners Classique
Legend (Not A Single Doubt) and Aethero
(Sebring) as well as a brother to brilliant mare
Sunlight (Zoustar) each make $1.1 million.
An I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly
also made $1 million late in the day at the
virtual auction conducted by Jonathan D’Arcy
and Chris Russell throughout the seven hours,

with all three million-dollar lots surpassing the
previous online record of NZ$670,000 for mare
Hasahalo (Savabeel) sold only last month.
Comparing 2019 and 2020 Easter sales would
be unfair given the coronavirus pandemic, but
the general consensus among many was that the
market held up better than expected despite a
significant number of withdrawals.
Nonetheless, the average was last night
at $308,762, a decrease of 13 per cent on the
overall figure achieved over two days last year,
and the median was $250,000, down $10,000
on what occurred in 2019. The declines were
nowhere near as big as the 30 to 50 per cent
that some vendors were privately fearing could
eventuate.

(Online - Day Two)

Inglis managing director Mark Webster
and his bloodstock team have grappled with the best way to conduct the
Easter sale while under strict government-imposed restrictions due to
Covid-19 and late last week they switched to a virtual auction, a move that
appears to have so far been welcomed by vendors and buyers alike.
“If you offered this sort of result a week ago I would have grabbed
it with both hands and run down the street. We weren’t expecting the
market to be as good as it was,”
Webster said last night.
“Obviously, it’s not last year;
it’s not a typical year, but the
results are pretty good, noting
the global crisis we are all living
through at the moment.
Webster added: “The average
is remarkable and so is the median
at $250,000. The average is down
15 per cent which under the
conditions is fantastic.
“I also didn’t think we’d sell
a yearling for a million dollars,
but we have sold three at that
level.”
So You Think colt could be next LegendIt was probably no surprise that Hong Kong owner Bon Ho would be
strong on the half-brother to his star sprinter Classique Legend, but he
had significant competition from fellow international as well as Australian
buyers before landing the colt for $1.1 million.
An “over the moon” vendor Linda Monds of Tyreel Stud was effusive
in her praise of the high-priced colt and revealed that Ho had made initial
inquiries to buy the horse weeks earlier and he backed his conviction with
his online bids yesterday.
“He definitely deserved that result. He is the nicest and strongest colt
I have ever seen,” Minds said.
“So You Think has done an amazing job over these past few months
and this boy’s going to be up there, too, and I’d love to say that I can
guarantee it. Honestly, it’s just a remarkable individual.
“His demeanor won a lot of people over. He was so chilled out and
relaxed. I had Carmel Size out here the other day and she couldn’t believe
that the mare had done it again.
“He is such a nice horse. To be honest, I am devastated that I have had
to sell him but to run this farm we need an income and we get an income
three times a year - Magics, Classic and Easter.
“I don’t know what the future holds and no one does with events
happening globally, so for me I had to sell, sell, sell all the way. I’ll be
watching so closely.”

Colt ex Pinocchio from Tyreel Stud was the joint top-priced yearling when selling to Legend Racing Pty Ltd for $1,100,000.
An Easter Sale graduate from the Coolmore draft, Quick Thinker became his sire’s 6th Gr.1 winner with victory in the Australian Derby-Gr.1.

Offered as Lot 134, the colt is the
fourth foal out of Pinocchio (Encosta De Lago), making him a half-brother
to the Les Bridge-trained Classique Legend as well as top-class Hong Kong
sprinter Aethero. Adding further weight to the colt’s pedigree is that his
dam is also a sister to champion Group 1-winning three-year-old Racing
To Win and the Group 3-winning sire Purrealist (Tale Of The Cat).
“We raised Puppet Master, we raised Classique Legend and we raised
Aethero and I am blown away by how similar they all are … in their
natures, their walk and strength,” Monds continued.
“It is quite amazing to watch the foals out of Pinnochio and we are
really, really excited to see the I Am Invincible that she will foal down this
year. I just can’t wait to see every foal from her now because we have quite
a few to compare to.”
The colt also set a new yearling price benchmark for his Coolmore-
based sire So You Think who had three-year-old son Quick Thinker land
Saturday’s Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick.
The million dollar mark reached by Tyreel Stud comes just a year after
they sold a son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill), the talented Chris Waller-
trained colt Osamu, for $1.7 million.
Tyreel Stud will offer the I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) half-
brother to Osamu as Lot 291 they will also consign the Hinchinbrook
(Fastnet Rock) half-sister to this season’s ATC Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3,
1000m) winner Every Rose (Choisir) as Lot 394.

Lot 191Breeding: Exceed And Excel - Serious Satire (More Than Ready) colt
Price: $760,000
Buyer: Hong Kong Jockey Club
Vendor: Willow Park Stud
Craig Rounsefell of Boomer Bloodstock purchased a colt by top
sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill) from the draft of Willow Park Stud
for $760,000 on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. "Exceed And
Excel's progeny have done very well in Hong Kong, the latest of his
stars including sprint Champion Mr Stunning and up and comer
Big Party,” Rounsefell said. “This colt is the first foal out of a very fast
Group 3-winning mare, bred on the same cross as Bivouac from one
of New Zealand's best families. He's a beautiful scopey colt who will
develop into a lovely horse." Rousefell also secured a Pride Of Dubai
(Street Cry) colt out of Roses ‘N’ Wine (Broken Vow) for $500,000 and
a Tavistock (Montjeu) colt for $150,000, both on behalf of the Hong
Kong Jockey Club.
“We have three more in tomorrow and they have been unbelievably
popular as well but I don’t know at what level,” Monds said.
“I am really looking forward to selling Osamu’s little half-brother by I
Am Invincible. He is an absolute cracker and, on feedback I have had, I do
believe he is one of the best I Am Invincible colts in the catalogue.”
While the majority of vendors were happy with the way day one
unfolded, Monds admitted that the lack of trainers and syndicators
operating in the middle market shone through.
“They can’t buy on spec anymore because they don’t know what’s around
the corner and they’ve lost their clientele to a certain extent,” she said.
“I feel very sorry for these syndicators and trainers who rely on the two
and five percenters who invest a bit of play money.
“There’s a level of the market who is not there but I guess we all knew
that when we came into this sale. Full credit to Inglis, they need to hold
their head high.
“They have provided a platform for the likes of myself and other
vendors who just wanted to go to market, not knowing what that market
was going to be.”Lot 134: So You Think - Pinocchio colt INGLIS

Bright future tipped for Sunlight’s $1.1 million brother
The other session-topping colt was the Zoustar (Northern Meteor)
brother to star mare Sunlight who also reached the $1.1 million mark.
The Widden Stud-consigned Lot 212, out of dual Group 3 winner Solar
Charged (Charge Forward), was sold to Hawkes Racing.
He became the most expensive Zoustar sold at public auction,
eclipsing the $1.075 million that Yulong Investments spent on the half-
brother to Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Quick Thinker (So
You Think) at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale - a
tremendous result given the current economic climate.
“It’s a huge relief. From the moment this guy was born we always
thought he was a million-dollar colt and the journey that goes with
that has been a rollercoaster ride, especially in the last few weeks,”
Widden’s Antony Thompson said. “But for him to realise $1.1
million in this current market is a really stunning result and we are
really thrilled.
“For ourselves, Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing, who bred the colt
in partnership with us and Dan Fletcher (of Telemon Thoroughbreds) in
Queensland, it is a great thrill. We have had an incredible journey with

Lot 213Breeding: I Am Invincible - Solar Moon (Pivotal) colt
Price: $700,000
Buyer: Hong Kong Jockey Club
Vendor: Three Bridges Thoroughbreds
Also bound for Hong Kong is an I Am Invincible (Invincible
Spirit) colt out of Solar Moon (Pivotal) who herself is a three-quarter
sister to star European stayer Dee Ex Bee (Farhh). "I rated this I Am
Invincible colt as high as any I have seen this year,” Craig Rounsefell
said. “He is an outstanding type from a significant international
family. I love the way Three Bridges raises their horses in large open
paddocks, it's a very natural environment for young horses to lay
good bone and muscle tone. I thought he was a special colt and was
delighted to secure him.
to your stallion and have this great
journey. It’s been so much fun and
a wonderful ride.”
Interest had been high in the
colt, Thompson said, although
it was all relative given that the
majority of yearlings remained
on the farms where they were
prepared.
“We had about 50 to 60
farm parades, which is good but
compare that with 150 to 200 at the
Riverside complex. All the people
who came and did the legwork
were serious buyers, they have
done the lists and done the work
and miles,” he said.
“The team at home have worked hard, it is just a shame they couldn’t
be there at the Inglis complex to lead this beautiful colt through the ring -
you really do feel for the guys on the farm not being able to show off these
beautiful yearlings.”
The father-and-sons stable of John, Wayne and Michael Hawkes have
been significant buyers this year, being the leading purchaser at Magic
Millions back in January and they again stepped up yesterday.
“Dad and Michael did the inspections and Michael rang me and said
‘we’ve found the colt’,” Wayne Hawkes said.
“He just said he’s an absolute A, a perfect A in his opinion and John
Hawkes does not hand out many As at a sale in any year.
“Plus, the cross works, Sunlight is an iron horse and this bloke only
needs to be half as good as her and it would be great if he could go and
stand at Widden Stud one day.”
The colt, who was catalogued as Lot 212, is the seventh foal for
Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Solar Charged (Charge
Forward), making him a brother to Sunlight and the mare’s Group
3-winning stablemate Sisstar and a half-brother to the Group 3-placed
Sheikha (Sebring). Solar Charged, who did not get in foal in 2018, was
again covered by Zoustar last September.

Malone’s judgement proven right with $1 million pinhook result
Kitchwin Hills’ Mick Malone has first-hand knowledge of dual Group
1-winning mare Srikandi (Dubawi) and her early offspring led to the
Scone breeder to back his judgment on pinhooking her second foal by I
Am Invincible.
And the educated gamble yesterday paid off when the filly - a $600,000
Inglis Australian Weanling Sale pinhook - made $1 million late on day one.
Malone and Kitchwin Hills sold Srikandi for $2 million at last year’s
Chairman’s Sale to dissolve a partnership of clients who owned the mare
as well as the I Am Invincible filly who was signed for by Andrew Williams
Bloodstock yesterday.
“We are very happy with that - it is wonderful for all the staff who have
had to prep them under very strange conditions and hopefully conditions
we will never have to see again,” Malone said.
“I was just so nervous and I think everyone selling today was by no
means sitting there feeling very confident - we were all very nervous.
“We put a strong reserve on her, nowhere near what she made, but a
reserve that we felt was fair. “
Catalogued as Lot 223, the
filly’s two-year-old half-sister
Heroess (Snitzel) ran fourth at her
only start in March at Warwick Farm
for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden
and owners Greg and Barb Ingham’s
GPI Racing and Carl Holt.
Their dam Srikandi, who was
trained by Ciaron Maher, won nine
races, including five in succession,
is a half-sister to South African
Grade 3 winner Rain Gal (Galileo)
and stakes-placed Arjuna (Giant’s
Causeway) who later raced in
Hong Kong as New Glory.
Lot 39Breeding: I Am Invincible - Lorna May (Redoute’s Choice)
Price: $520,000
Buyer: Andrew Williams Bloodstock
Vendor: Yarraman Park Stud
Sydney agent Andrew Williams did the leg work in recent weeks,
inspecting Easter sale yearlings and he struck early on day one for a
filly by top stallion I Am Invincible on behalf of some of the owners of
Hawkes Racing-trained Group 1-winning entre Brutal (O’Reilly) who
retires to Newgate Farm this year. "We thought she was an absolute
star when we saw her three or four times on the farm," Williams
said. "She just kept getting better and better - she just walked like a
superstar. We are very lucky to get her. It is very interesting times, but
we've got an I Am Invincible filly out of a Redoute's Choice mare from
a big family so we are very happy."
“We pinhooked her as a weanling so it was important that she sold
well, but fillies like that don’t come around very often,” Malone said.
“Well done to Andy Williams who bought her and they tell me that
Dean Hawthorne was under bidder - two great judges.
”No matter what she is a filly that deserved that sort of money. She
epitomises what Easter is about - beautifully bred and good looking.”
Williams was also familiar with the I Am Invincible filly, having initially
conducted the bidding for Malone as a weanling, but he was struck by
how much she had developed in the 11 months since.
“The order was an outcross filly free of Danehill and this filly just made
so much sense, I thought she was so well balanced, a quality individual
that looks fast,’’ Williams said.
“We’ve clocked up the KMs, looked at horses two, three, four times
but you know what? There’s no difference doing it this way, we’ve got
to be a step ahead of the game and if that means being in the car all
day, so be it.”
Lot 14Breeding: I Am Invincible - Lady Sharapova (Fastnet Rock) filly
Price: $450,000
Buyer: Sheamus Mills Bloodstock for client Heath Newton
Vendor: Coolmore Stud
“I went around to all the farms - I had a list of about 120 fillies (to
inspect). Instead of coming back and doing second and third (looks),
I kept out the fillies I really liked for longer. I had a group look at this
filly and the guys at Coolmore were nice enough to bring her out on
her own. I snuck out the back of the stables to have a proper look at
her,” Sheamus Mills said.
Melbourne-based agent Mills’ client Heath Newton, a Junee
abattoir owner, has horses in training with Mick Price and Michael
Kent Jr, Tony and Calvin McEvoy as well as Tony Gollan. They include
the stakes-placed See Me Exceed (Sebring) and Listed winner
Persuader (Zoustar). “He’s got some really lovely horses ... to go to
stud this year for him and this will be one that we add to the list in a
few years’ time after she’s won a nice race,” he said.
We are very happy with
that - it is wonderful for all the staff who have had to prep them under very strange conditions and hopefully conditions we will never have to see again- Mick Malone

Malone also reserved praise for Inglis
operating the sale in a difficult environment.
“I just want to say well done to the Inglis team, they have done a great job. I
am so glad we stuck at it and what a terrific result for the guys,” he said.
Srikandi had a filly by American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) last
September and was covered by fellow Coolmore shuttler Justify (Scat
Daddy) in November.
Magnier makes mark with five colts on day one
The demand for the progeny of I Am Invincible, the leading sire on
day one by aggregate, did not stop with the seven-figure filly as Coolmore’s
Tom Magnier also made a virtual sales ring statement by going to $875,000
to secure a colt by the Yarraman Park Stud-based stallion.
The Torryburn Stud-bred and consigned colt continued Coolmore’s
well-considered push for colts by Australia’s premier stallions in 2020, a
plan that began at the Magic Millions in January and in New Zealand soon
after, whilst Magnier signed for five yearlings yesterday to be the leading
buyer by aggregate.
The son of I Am Invincible is the second foal out of the three-time
winner Miss Interiors (Flying Spur), herself a half-sister to dual Group 1
winner and Newgate Farm-based stallion Russian Revolution (Snitzel)
and Group 3 winner Turbo Miss (Sebring). He was catalogued as Lot 73.
Miss Interiors was purchased by Belmont Bloodstock Agency’s
Damon Gabbedy at the 2017 Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $625,000 on behalf
of Torryburn Stud when in foal to Deep Field (Northern Meteor).
The resulting colt made $260,000 at last year’s Magic Millions sale
when purchased by Shadwell’s Angus Gold.
Lot 74Breeding: Lord Kanaloa - Miss Ivanovic (Captain Rio) filly
Price: $300,000
Buyer: Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock
Vendor: Bhima Thoroughbreds
New Zealand agent Dean Hawthorne landed the only yearling
by Japanese stallion Lord Kanaloa (Deep Impact), who sired this
year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) Tagaloa. “The dam had a
Deep Impact colt that made $950,000 last year and has trialled with
Ciaron Maher already and we have been watching him because we
liked him last year,” Hawthorne said. “She was a nice well-balanced
filly and we figured that Lord Kanaloa is going to be much more
appreciated in Australia after the Blue Diamond success so hopefully
she can get black-type for us.” Hawthorne also secured an Exceed
And Excel (Danehill) filly from the Sledmere Stud draft for $600,000
and a Fastnet Rock (Danehill) sister to dual Group 1 runner-up
Missrock for $500,000. “The fillies will go into the GSA Bloodstock
broodmare band and we bought fillies here last year and we have
a big broodmare band,” Hawthorne said. “We like to sell our colts,
generally and we are racing our fillies and we have had great results
on the track this year and we are going to race more and more fillies.”
"We went down to look at him a Torryburn a couple of times and he is
a horse with a lot of quality and the whole team liked him - we just need a
bit of luck with him going forward," Magnier said.
"But we are very happy with him and hopefully he can prove to be an
early two-year-old. We take the horses back to the farm and break them
here and then we will have a meeting at the end of the sale and will decide
which horse goes where."
Magnier was acting as buyer and vendor from Coolmore’s Jerrys
Plains property and was pleased with the way the sale proceeded under
the circumstances.
Coolmore was leading vendor on day one, selling ten yearlings for a
combined $2.95 million.
"It is a very different experience for us - obviously there are some
lovely horses going through the sale and I think there is some value out
there for people buying horses," he said.
"To give Inglis their credit they have worked hard the last couple
of weeks to try and get it right - it is hard times that we are in at the
moment and I do believe that everyone is just trying to make the best
of it."
Lot 167Breeding: Zoustar - Rosa’s Spur (Flying Spur) colt
Price: $210,000
Buyer: Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock
Vendor: Widden Stud
The last of four yearlings purchased by Dean Hawthorne on the
first day of the Easter sale was a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt who
is a half-brother to stakes-winner and Group 2 producer Members
Joy (Hussonet). “The Zoustar colt, we didn’t actually spec, but I just
really liked him as he is such an athlete,” Dean Hawthorne said. “The
phone has gone three times since I bought him of people trying to
buy into him, so he must have caught the eye for those who saw him
in the Hunter Valley.”

Magnier also went to $525,000 for a
Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) colt out of Australian Oaks (Gr 1,
2400m) winner Once Were Wild (Johannesburg) and to $380,000 for the
three-quarter brother to Group 1 winner Booker (Written Tycoon) by first
season sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon).
He also bought a Pierro (Lonhro) colt for $340,000 from KBL
Thoroughbreds and a Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt from Willow Park
Stud for $475,000.
Willow Park Stud’s Glenn Burrows was forced to withdraw the Snitzel
colt from the Magic Millions Yearling Sale earlier this year after an incident
en route to the Gold Coast.
Harron latches onto ‘one of best Frankels I have laid eyes on’
Demand for quality fillies with pedigrees to match, often a feature of
the Easter sale, again came to fruition yesterday with nine of the top 20
yearlings sold being fillies.
That compared to the breakdown last year when just six fillies were
among the 20 highest-priced Easter yearlings.
One agent keen to make a long-term investment in a filly on behalf
of a client yesterday was James Harron who went to $670,000 for a highly
touted Frankel (Galileo) filly from the Evergreen Stud draft.
A half-sister to Hong Kong Group 3 winner Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s
Choice), the Frankel filly is the eighth foal out of champion New Zealand
Group 1-winning mare Princess Coup (Encosta de Lego), whom Evergreen
Stud’s Tony Bott paid $3 million for at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast
National Broodmare Sale. She was catalogued as Lot 143.
“The mare was obviously a superstar and it is great to see her produce
such an amazing filly in this Frankel. It is probably one of the best Frankels
I have laid eyes on,” Harron declared.
“The filly didn’t turn a hair when I went to look at her a few times. She
had a wonderful walk on her, a beautiful attitude and a wonderful depth
of girth.
“She is a very exciting filly for us and hopefully she can do well on the
track and then be part of the broodmare band for a long time to come.”
Harron is arguably better known as a buyer of colts and on Saturday
his syndicate enjoyed elite level success with Inglis Sires (registered as
ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m) winner King’s Legacy (Redoute’s
Choice) at Randwick.
But buying fillies is far from foreign to the agent and was more than
happy with the price tag he paid for yesterday’s acquisition.
“It cost a lot of money to produce these fillies and a lot of breeders have
put a lot of money and risk in to that and I think for this sort of quality and
this calibre of horse I think it was a fair price, but in this current market is
quite difficult to understand where the mark is,” Harron said.
“I think you have to put a price on what suits you and drive on from
there. We were happy and I think that was around the right mark.
“We have always bought fillies over the years for different owners, so we
just go through and do all the work and get as many shortlisted as we can.”
The Easter sale has been overshadowed by the ramifications caused
by the coronavirus in recent weeks and Harron believes yesterday’s sale
“has done extraordinarily well given the circumstances”.
“It has always been a sale we have been picky at. We really try and
focus on what we really want here and it is a good chance to pick up some
really blue-chip quality assets,” Harron said.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET
Worldwide audience tunes into online Easter sale
The depth of the market, despite the absence of Aquis Farm and fellow
prominent buyer Orbis Bloodstock, was underpinned by the China Horse
Club-Newgate Farm partnership (seven lots), Coolmore and Hawkes
Racing (five lots each) and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock (four).
Boomer Bloodstock’s Craig Rounsefell, acting for the Hong Kong
Jockey Club, was also pivotal in the market, securing four yearlings, as did
Bon Ho’s Legend Racing enterprise.
The willingness of internationals to participate in the market, despite
not being able to attend the sale
physically or even inspect the
horses personally, helped make up
for some of the buyers who were
absent from the bench.
Asian Bloodstock’s Marie
Yoshida, BBA Ireland’s Adrian
Nichol and the UK’s Badgers
Bloodstock were active on day
one, while buyers from Japan and
China also participated.
“It’s been one of the most extraordinary days on the job for me as
managing director, to oversee day one of an Easter sale with no horses
and no people, it’s certainly something out of the box,’ Webster said.
“Our website traffic figures have been quite phenomenal – we
have had people watching our Sale Day Live coverage from 99 different
countries on six continents around the world and buyers coming from all
across the globe as well, as well as almost 150,000 visitors to the website
today alone.
“That side of things has been very satisfying
because our vendors put in a tremendous
amount of work under arguably some
of the most challenging conditions
of their lives and to be able to
even conduct a sale under the
circumstances for them has been a
great team effort.”
Day two of the Easter sale starts
at 10am today.

13 for Queen Elizabeth Stakes
A star-studded field of 13, including high profile
international visitors Danon Premium (Deep
Impact) and Addeybb (Pivotal), has been declared
for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at
Randwick on Saturday. The overseas raiders will
be joined in the field by star New Zealand pair Te
Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) and Melody Belle
(Commands) as well as last-start Tancred Stakes
(Gr 1, 2400m) winner Verry Elleegant (Zed) and
last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner
Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War).
Te Akau Shark cleared for ElizabethAfter suffering mild bruising to the sole of his
hoof and requiring a vet check, Te Akau Shark
has been cleared to run in Saturday’s Queen
Elizabeth Stakes. Jamie Richards advised Racing
NSW stewards that the gelding had suffered the
bruising to his off-fore foot following his third
in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m). He
further advised that Te Akau Shark did not miss
any fast work, although he was given a few days
of swimming after the Group 1 contest. Te Akau
Shark will have to pass one more vet check on
Saturday morning.
Doncaster winner on quick back-upFresh off scoring her maiden Group 1 win in
last weekend’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m),
Nettoyer (Sebring) will attempt to make it
two top-level features in a week when she
tackles Saturday’s Coolmore Legacy Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. The Wendy Roche-
trained Nettoyer has drawn barrier eight in the
17-horse field with Glen Boss set to take the
reins. Nettoyer is one of six Group 1 winners
in the field, along with Alizee (Sepoy), Con
Te Partiro (Scat Daddy), Danzdanzdance
(Mastercraftsman), Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock)
and three-year-old Funstar (Adelaide).
Miss Siska out for redemptionAfter leading until the final few strides in last
year’s Coolmore Legacy Stakes, Miss Siska
(So You Think) is back in Sydney to tackle
the race again. The Grahame Begg-trained
mare finished fourth to Kenedna (Not A
Single Doubt) last year, beaten by a long
neck, on what was just her second start for
the handler. This year, she comes in off wins
in the Carlyon Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) and the
Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) before she
finished eighth in the Australian Cup (Gr 1,
2000m). "We think she's going really, really
well," Begg said. "Last year she was second-
up into it after winning the Bendigo Bracelet
so it's a completely different preparation, but
we've got a bit more of a handle on her now
and we feel she's going as good as she has
done."
Sargent chases another Australian OaksJohn Sargent’s first Australian Oaks (Gr 1,
2400m) win with Gust Of Wind (Darci Brahma)
will always be remembered in the annals of
history as the last time that champion mare
Winx (Street Cry) was beaten. "There's no-one
that can equal that, can they? The last horse
to beat Winx," Sargent said. "Albeit she won
33 races after that, but that was a great thrill
winning the Oaks with Gust Of Wind that day.
It does come up a bit and I do take satisfaction
because I used to go and watch Winx race
every start. She's just a phenomenon, the best
horse I've ever seen all around the world. It was
a great thrill to be able to do that. And what
Winx did after I beat her was unbelievable."
Sargent saddles up two runners - Aspect
Ratio (Declaration Of War) and Stick ‘Em Up
(Dundeel) - in his quest for a second Australian
Oaks.
Etah James blossoming ahead of Sydney CupNew Zealand mare Etah James (Raise The
Flag) has “thrived” since she joined Ciaron
Maher and David Eustace’s Sydney base,
according to former trainer and part-owner
Mark Lupton. The Matamata horseman
receives regular updates from Annabel
Neasham, the Maher-Eustace team’s assistant
trainer, with jockey Glen Boss partnering
the seven-year-old in a gallop last weekend.
“Annabel is absolutely rapt with her,” Lupton
said. “She said she is flying in trackwork and
evidently Azuro struggled to keep up with her
in a gallop on Saturday and she just revelled
in the ground. She said Bossy
came back with a smile
on his face and said
she’d be right in
the finish. I like his
confidence and I
hope he is right.”

Sydney next for Swats ThatImpressive juvenile Swats That (Shamus Award)
will take the plunge into better company in
Sydney for the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
at Randwick on Saturday. A winner in the
Bendigo Vobis Gold Rush (1000m) on debut,
her original plan was to contest the $855,000
Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield on April 18.
Connections instead had to change plan as she
was deemed ineligible for the race. Her sire,
Shamus Award (Snitzel), stands at Rosemont
Stud in Victoria, but was stood in the Hunter
Valley, NSW, when Swats That was conceived,
thus making her ineligible for the race restricted
for Vobis horses. Connections are, however,
positive about their plan B. "It's a Group 2 race
worth half a million dollars so it's a pretty good
alternative to have," said Troy Corstens, who
trains in partnership with his father, Leon. "On
what she did on debut, you'd have to think she'll
measure up."
All Aged option for BrandenburgDoncaster Mile third Brandenburg (Burgundy)
could get another shot at a Group 1 if John
Sargent elects to run him in the All Aged Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) on April 18. "It was a very good
run in the Doncaster," Sargent said. "I would
have liked to have won it but he went close.
We were originally putting him out but he's
done well so we're just going to tick him over
for this week. I'll give him a gallop and decide
whether he's at his best and whether we go to
the All Aged Stakes. I'll just play it by ear and if
we don't we'll put him out for a spell and aim
for the spring."
Freedman looks to AdelaideSam Freedman, assistant trainer to his father
Anthony, has not ruled out two of his prolific
gallopers Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) and
Warning (Declaration Of War) from racing
at the Adelaide Carnival for further Group 1
success. Santa Ana Lane lost nothing in defeat
when runner up to Nature Step (Nicconi) in the
TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last week, and
could be set for The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) on
May 16. “He will run next in the All Aged Stakes
at Randwick on April 18, and then after that,
with the Brisbane carnival off, The Goodwood
in Adelaide is a distinct possibility,” Freedman
told Racing.com. Warning, winner of the VRC
Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), is back home after his run
in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) behind
Quick Thinker (So You Think). “If he doesn’t
come up and needs the paddock we still have
the lightly raced pair of Kusari (Epaulette) and
Carpool Karaoke (Tavistock) heading that way,”
said Freedman.
Bosson inquiry to resume today
An inquiry into Opie Bosson’s ride on Te Akau
Shark (Rip Van Winkle) in the George Ryder
Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) will be completed at
Warwick Farm today. Bosson was suspended
for careless riding on the gelding, with the
champion New Zealand jockey returning last
weekend to take the ATC Australian Derby (Gr
1, 2400m) on Quick Thinker (So You Think).
However, it was the tactics employed on the
Group 1 winner when finishing third in the
George Ryder which will be the subject of
today’s inquiry, in particular Bosson’s decision
to sit three and four wide throughout the trip.
Caulfield test for SircconiCaulfield trainer Nick Ryan is looking forward
to seeing Sircconi (Nicconi) back in action at
Caulfield after a frustrating run of setbacks.
Ryan will accept with Sircconi in Saturday's
Victoria Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) and providing
a blood test later in the week is given the all-
clear, the gelding will take his place. "His first-
up run was great as he was underdone, then
second-up at Flemington he jarred up a bit on
the firm track," Ryan said. "I had him ready and
thought he would be hard to beat in the Echuca
Cup, but he got a foot abscess that came up the
day before the race. That didn't burst for a week
or so, so he missed a couple of good gallops but
we've been able to get a few gallops into him of
late. Just those mishaps and not having raced
for six weeks, it's not ideal with a big gelding
like him." Ryan added: "He's in good order and
I expect him to run well."
Former Kiwis to step out for Lees, PetagnaKris Lees saddles up a pair of recent stable
recruits for prominent New Zealand owner
Lib Petagna at Warwick Farm today. Stakes-
performed three-year-old Sorrentina
(Savabeel) was Listed-placed on debut and
was a winner on a heavy track at Ellerslie in
September. She goes in the Benchmark 66
(1200m) event. “She seems to be coming up
well,” Lees said. “I have been pleased with her
trials. It is a strong enough race, but she is going
the right way. With her wet track form in New
Zealand, it looks like she will get through the
track OK. I think she will run well, but she will
certainly improve off the run going forward.”
Four-year-old Peaceful (Savabeel) has her
second start for the stable in the Benchmark
74 (1200m) race, having finished second-last
a month ago. “She blew the start first-up, but
worked home okay,” Lees said. “Provided that
she races clean and has a nice run she should
go well. She will probably be better again with
one more run under her belt. She has trained
on well enough and she will get through the
conditions OK as well.”
Camelot heading to PakenhamAfter being scratched at the barriers at Caulfield
on Saturday, Danny O’Brien’s progressive
stayer Russian Camelot (Camelot) will head
to a Benchmark 64 (1600m) at Pakenham
tomorrow night, with the hopes of a berth in
the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) still
on the cards. "He came through it (Saturday's
scratching) without any mishap and he had
a good, strong gallop here at Flemington on
Monday morning," O'Brien told Racing.com.
"We popped him back through the barriers and
he was all good in them. We've still got plenty
of time to get to South Australia, but it would
certainly be nice to run him this week and,
touch wood, that can happen on Thursday."

Sunlight a step closer to racing return South Australia’s final barrier trial session
for the foreseeable future at Morphettville
tomorrow is set to feature Tony and Calvin
McEvoy’s three-time Group 1 winner Sunlight
(Zoustar), who is returning from a paddock
injury where she suffered a chip to the outside
of a splint bone in a hind leg. The trial will be
her final hit-out ahead of her raceday return in
the R N Irwin Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on April 18,
with her main aim the Robert Sangster Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) on May 2. "That hind splint bone
problem is a thing of the past. Her action is
superb," Tony McEvoy said. "She's had a jump-
out at Flemington, a course proper gallop at
Morphettville, a trial at Strathalbyn and this
trial on Thursday will top her off. She's never
been able to win first-up before because I've
never been able to have her fit enough so going
into a big contest second-up, I've got to get her
pretty close."
Stud unlikely for Alabama
Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) is unlikely
to join horses such as Brutal (O’Reilly) and
Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) as being
recently retired to stud. The co-owner of the trio,
Rupert Legh, said it was intended for Alabama
Express to race again this spring, despite a virus
sidelining him from an autumn campaign. “He’s
a very lightly raced horse and at this stage we’ll
head on to the spring and hopefully all being
well he'll be racing in the spring and hopefully
we'll see a bigger and stronger horse," Legh told
RSN927's Racing Pulse. Alabama Express beat
older horses when winning the C.F. Orr Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) in February on just his seventh
start. Shortly after his eighth run, he became ill,
as Legh explained: “He had a pretty bad virus
and he was at Werribee (Animal Hospital) for
about 10 days.”
Rawiller adds Godolphin to CV Rising star Campbell Rawiller rode his first
winner in the Godolphin colours, when winning
a heat of the Rising Star Series aboard the James
Cummings-trained Nerone (Hallowed Crown).
“That’s my first ride for Godolphin, so it’s great to
get a win in these colours,” Rawiller told Racing.
com. The win continued a long association
between Godolphin and the Rawiller family,
as Campbell’s father Nash and uncle Brad have
both had success in the royal blue colours.
“Uncle Brad has had success for Godolphin
so it’s nice to continue that. Hopefully this will
lead to more rides for them.” Rawiller earned 12
points for victory, moving him to 60 points, 12
more than Teo Nugent, who collected six points
for second. Third is the injured Liam Riordan,
on 35 points.
Hope back in townApprentice jockey Tahlia Hope returned to
the saddle at Werribee last Saturday, where
she quickly got one on the board through
champion fencer Zed Em (Zed), after being
sidelined for ten months after contracting viral
meningitis. Hope recovered from the illness
before Covid-19 really gathered momentum
but she still has to be cautious. "I've still got a
very low immune system, so they've just upped
my medication for that,” Hope told Racing.com.
During winter last year, Hope felt unwell the
day after riding a double at Morphettville. She
deteriorated to the point that her symptoms
became unbearable, and was placed in ICU
which included being unconscious for four
days. “I started riding trackwork and thought
‘I really want to come back’, but I just couldn’t
lose the weight no matter what,” said Hope.
“I think once I stopped stressing the weight
started coming off.”
Chau to return to Hong KongPolished apprentice Jerry Chau will return to
Hong Kong after being granted permission
to ride by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Chau
arrived in South Australia last year, and quickly
gathered momentum there, riding 62 winners
this season. He will ride in Hong Kong, pending
a medical clearance, until the end of the
season. “It is anticipated Apprentice Chau will
commence riding in races at the conclusion of
a mandatory period of isolation upon his return
to Hong Kong from Australia in the coming
days,” read the HKJC committee’s statement.
Victorian premier backs racingVictorian premier Daniel Andrews has
expressed confidence in the ability of racing
to continue amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Andrews pointed to the social and economic
benefits of racing and said that the measures
put in place by the industry were working so
far. "Racing is without crowds, racing has put
in place a whole range of social distancing
measures, just like the construction industry for
instance," Andrews said yesterday. "Where you
can manage a risk, we think it's appropriate.
And it's got to be proportionate, what would
be the public health benefit versus the cost in
terms of jobs? I'm not a big racegoer myself but
many people derive a lot of enjoyment from
that. And there's not a lot of that going around
at the moment. I've had it put to me that some
people are getting quite a lot out of the fact that
racing is going ahead in a limited form."
Racing Victoria begins spring planningRacing Victoria chief executive Giles
Thompson says that the organisation is starting
to look towards the spring as coronavirus
restrictions become further entrenched. "One
of the challenges we face is there are so many
unknowns," Thompson told RSN927. "As we
sit here, we just don't know what the world
will look like in three weeks’ time. We didn't
know what it would look like three weeks ago
to what it would look like now and what it will
look like in mid-May. We are beginning to run
out of time and will have to make calls as we
enter June. Right now, we don't think we have
to make any core decisions about the spring
and we're hoping that we'll continue to race
and if we're continuing to race in four weeks’
time, then we can be more optimistic about the
spring program."

Tyler making most of lockdownWhile many people will be bandying around a
few choice F words over the lockdown period,
there are two that are helping Southland trainer
Kelvin Tyler get through it - family and farming.
The Riverton horseman is a proud family man.
He trains in partnership with his daughter
Aimee and works closely with his sons Jason and
Michael who run the family’s 500 acre dairy farm.
While working with family can have its moments,
Tyler said he is lucky to be surrounded by his
loved ones at times like this. “It is pretty testing
at times, but I am pretty lucky,” Tyler admitted.
“Most other farmers don’t have their children
interested in farming, but I am lucky I have two
sons who are keen on farming. Aimee pushed
me to get my trainer’s license in the earlier years.
She loves being involved, it has been unbelievable
really. We are a pretty close family. We are all in it
together and it works out nicely most of the time.”

Class keeps rising in Happy Valley featureThis Is Class (So You Think) will attempt to
prove he is well-named when he shoots for
a hat-trick of wins in tonight’s Happy Valley
finale, the Class 2 Hing Man Handicap
(1000m). The five-year-old is aiming to
become only the 13th horse this season to
have won three or more consecutive races and
the fourth horse from the Francis Lui stable to
achieve the feat, after Golden Sixty (Medaglia
d’Oro), More Than This (Dutch Art) and
Fortune Happiness (Starspangledbanner).
“The worry is stepping back to 1000 metres
and the draw (10) is also not ideal, but he’s
good - his condition is good,” Lui said. “It’s
hard to say how much improvement he has
left to come but he’s such an honest horse.”

Ward eyes Royal Ascot, Breeders’ Cup for KimariSpeedy three-year-old Kimari (Munnings) has
Group 1 aims on both turf and dirt this season
after her return victory on dirt in the Purple
Martin Stakes (6f) at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.
Kimari, who won her debut by 15 lengths on
dirt, raced predominantly on turf as a juvenile,
finishing second in the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2,
5f) at Royal Ascot last season. She was returning
for the first time since finishing fourth in the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Gr 2, 5f) at
Santa Anita in November. She is likely to target
the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal
Ascot, should the festival proceed, ahead of the
Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) in November.
“She's going to be just a pure sprinter, dirt or turf,"
Ward said. "I think she's really going to jump up
as we get through the season and, numbers-wise,
she'll be right up there as a serious contender for
the Breeders' Cup Sprint against the boys."

The Australian Turf Club, amid the
most extraordinary circumstances, has
conjured up an extraordinarily good
race which, this Saturday, will surely
draw unprecedented world wide attention through
as many as 60 countries and potentially provide a
timely revenue stimulus via simulcasting.
James Ross, the ATC’s general manager of
racing, wagering and international, estimates
the international audience may grow three-
fold or more for the club’s $2 million Longines
Queen Elizabeth Sakes which features two
legitimately top class international performers
in Japan’s Danon Premium (Deep Impact) and
Britain’s Addeybb (Pivotal).
Adding further interest, especially from this
portal’s perspective, is that Danon Premium -
who was named champion two-year-old colt
in Japan - would certainly emerge as a dual
hemisphere stallion prospect if successful.
There is no need to indulge in any hyperbole
of comparisons against the backdrop of a racing
world which, right now, has a diminished
number of races. Suffice to say, it’s a race which
has the quality and depth to appeal at
any time.
“We are delighted of course,” said
Ross, “to have Addeybb and Danon
Premium; the Melbourne Cup winner
Vow And Declare; the two great New
Zealanders Te Akau Shark and Melody
Belle plus the in-form Verry Elleegant
and it (the race) may not end there.”
Danon Premium’s presence
ensures that Japan joins Hong Kong
in simulcasting the race, which will
increase the viewing audience and
provide betting revenue, while you’d
imagine racing starved British fans
might not find 6.55am (their time) not too
ungodly to be tuning in (forty minutes earlier
if they fancy watching Addeybb’s stablemate
Young Rascal (Intello) in the Sydney Cup).
After all, 4.8 million of them watched the
virtual Grand National last Saturday - a point
noted yesterday by Harry Eustace, who’s looking
after Addeybb and Young Rascal for trainer
William Haggas. “I’m sure everyone is watching
(at home). There’s not much racing, any sport of
any sort is proving popular even the virtual Grand
National. Hopefully we give them something to
cheer about on Saturday,” he said.
“There’s been great interest in the two British
horses,” Ross said, “a lot of social media and it
probably all began with Tom Marquand riding
his first Group 1 winner here and on Saturday we
have Marquand and Haggas representing British
racing which may provide it a fillip.

“With the quality of horses we have for the
Queen Elizabeth, and given that we are one
of the few jurisdictions still racing, I think the
audience should increase by at least a multiple
of three.”
Ross belives there may be a misconception
about the level of income generated by overseas
jurisdictions operating on “our” races. “It is
not a river of gold but it is very welcome and
significant revenue,” he said.
The ATC has contractual restrictions,
apparently, in regard to revealing the numbers,
but Tom Biddington (in the South China
Morning Post) this week reported; “The Hong
Kong Jockey Club’s late switch to simulcast
(last) Saturday’s Doncaster Mile meeting from
Royal Randwick has provided Australian racing
with an unexpected windfall of A$1 million
(HK$4.67 million).”
This Saturday’s meeting was always on
the HKJC simulcast agenda but the Doncaster
meeting was included very late after the Dubai
World Cup meeting was cancelled, and just shy
of $50 million was invested on the seven races
taken from Randwick and the race average was
the highest of the season.
This week Japan joins the party
and the appearance of international
runners might stimulate more interest
in Hong Kong which has no major
races at Sha Tin this Sunday unlike last
weekend.
And Saturday’s race, beyond
remarkably, has still managed to come
together despite the now world-wide
restrictions on the movement of horses
and people.
Team Britain arrived on February
29 before the compulsory 14 day isolation for
arrivals was invoked, but Danon Premium did
not land until March 17. Trainer Mitsumasa
Nakauchida, considered a rising star, is not here
but his staff - including Japan based Australian
translator Adam Hourigan - were able to isolate
at Canterbury racecourse.
What happens after the race remains
unclear. “I understand there are no horse flights
booked which means they (the horses) could
holiday (spell) here. Regardless they’ll holiday
here or at home. As for us, it’s still unknown,”
Eustace said.
Addeybb and Danon Premium bring
excellent credentials to the race but such is its
overall strength that neither has a mortgage
on the prize which is well reflected in early
markets.
Danon Premium was the equal ninth
highest rated horse in Japan last year and no
country has greater depth. The highest rated
was Cox Plate winner Lys Gracieux (Heart’s
Cry) who was beaten by Danon Premium in the
Group 2 Kinko Sho last March.
Addeybb’s form against the likes of
Ballydoyle’s Galileo daughters Magical and Magic
Wand is compelling but we know that there
was only a half length between him and Verry
Elleegant (Zed) in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes.
I fancy the “home” team headed by Te
Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) and the not to be
underestimated Vow And Declare (Declaration
Of War), whose Australian Cup return was first
rate, who might give the visitors more than
a run for their money. A betting account, in
Japan, just might be handy!
Young Rascal’s Sydney Cup quest could be
momentous, likely precipitating greater British
and European interest if successful. He does
have to contend with 56 kilograms and only two
horses, in the past 20 years, have carried that
weight or more to victory. Plus he’s untried at
the trip and at a very short price at the time of
writing. Despite all that, I’m not that anxious to
take him on.
