“He was a stakes winner last time and he is a good looking son of Snitzel who was stakes-placed as a two-year-old and unlucky in the Magic Millions, so we have to give him a chance (in the Coolmore Stud Stakes),” Baker told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“He is tough, there is no doubt about it, and that is what holds him in good stead. He has improved throughout the preparation and he looks great. He travels down (last night), so it is very much a hit-and-run mission.

“I can’t fault him going into the race and he is a horse who I probably underestimated a little bit myself. We are yet to see the best of him and hopefully we can see that on Saturday.”

Baker said the capacity field of 20 three-year-olds in tomorrow’s race was likely to ensure a strong tempo, which would help Goodfella’s winning chances.

“I haven’t had too many runners down the straight and I will leave it up to Jason, but tactically we will look to be positive, put him up in the hunt somewhere and I am sure they will go fast, which should suit him,” he said.

“He is well set up for the race, but with 20 runners it is a bit of a lottery and you have got to be in it to win it.”

Purchased by Baker in conjunction with Blandford Bloodstock for $200,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Newhaven Park draft, Goodfella could be freshened up for a tilt at the

$2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) in January after tomorrow’s race.

“We will just see what happens on Saturday, but we definitely have to look at the Magic Millions Guineas,” he said.

Goodfella ($19) is joined by the James Cummings-trained stablemates Kementari (Lonhro), Malahat (Exceed And Excel) and the unbeaten $7.50 Coolmore Stud Stakes favourite Viridine (Poet’s Voice), a colt who defeated Goodfella in the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on 16 September at Randwick.

Cummings said the precedence of past Coolmore Stud Stakes winners Japonisme (Choisir) and Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) running in the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) as their lead up to the Group One race added to his confidence with Viridine tomorrow.

Viridine has drawn barrier one and will once again be ridden by Brenton Avdulla.

“He’s a very fast colt and we’ve been delighted with his training. He comes into this third up and ready to hit an absolute peak,” Cummings said.

“He needs to have gone ahead if he’s going to be winning, but we feel like he’s done that. He looks a particularly happy horse and very healthy within himself.”

Kementari has been freshened up since his second in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and was given a soft jump out at Flemington last Friday.

He will be partnered by Damian Lane from barrier 12.

“We’ve sharpened him up with an 800 metres barrier trial and with the addition of winkers we think that he can drop back in distance and still produce that lethal turn of foot that he’s got,” the trainer said.

“He’s going to be a far better horse in the autumn and this little bit of extra experience can only do him a world of good.”

Malahat, who ran fourth to Goodfella in the Brian Crowley Stakes last start, has drawn barrier eight and looks set to be partnered by French jockey Olivier Peslier, who will be having his first ride at Flemington.

“He holds a comfortable victory over Kementari in a maiden and since then he’s won against older horses at the midweeks,” Cummings said.

“With the addition of blinkers and the engagement of a top jockey he can certainly find a few lengths.”

The Lindsay Park-trained trio of fillies, Tulip (Pierro) ($13), Formality (Fastnet Rock) ($14) and Catchy (Fastnet Rock) ($8.50), also line up in the race.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Invincible Star (I Am Invincible), who won the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) down the Flemington straight at her first start as a two-year-old, is equal second favourite at $8.50 favourite with Catchy and Red Anchor Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Eptimum (Snitzel).

Stephen Baster will ride Invincible Star, a last start winner of the

Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on 14 October."She'll run well but what a race," Baster said."I was originally thinking she'd be better off around a bend because of

her speed but her win down the straight at her first start was sensational so that gives me a lot of hope."

Ace hand for AnglandTye Angland says he has not had many rides in the past during the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) carnival but has a strong hand at Flemington tomorrow headed by Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) contender Ace High (High Chaparral). Angland partners the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) as well as Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) entrant Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) and Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook) in the Myer Classic (Gr 1, 1600m). "I'm pretty bullish. (Ace High) has drawn well and you can't fault his runs or his work leading into it," Angland said. "Some of the chances have drawn wide which is an advantage. I should be able to put him in the right spot and roll him into the race at the right time. I've built a little bit of a relationship with him and he responds to my vigorous riding."

‘Geelong Classic form to stand up’Jockey Craig Williams believes the Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m) will prove to be a legitimate Victoria Derby formline this year. Williams rides the Lindsay Park-trained Justice Faith (Hinchinbrook) in tomorrow’s Victoria Derby, a three-year-old who ran sixth in the Listed race won by Weather With You (Teofilo) on 25 October. “I definitely think the Geelong Classic will stand up because this year is a very even race,” Williams said. “There’s a lot of horses that have got chances and different form references but there’s no standout in the race. I assume none of these horses have been to the extended trip then you start looking at pedigrees, performances and even maidens, as we’ve seen in the past, can run very well and this year is no exception.”

Baker after another Derby winWeather With You could deliver on a long-range plan when he bids to give prominent New Zealand trainer Murray Baker a second Victoria Derby

at Flemington. Baker won the 2010 Derby with Lion Tamer (Storming Home) when he trained in partnership with his son Bjorn, now a successful Sydney trainer. Now teamed with Andrew Forsman, Baker has trained the winners of 21 Group One race in Australia, more than any other New Zealander. Baker hopes Weather With You has the class to win the Group One race. “There’s obviously a couple of horses in there like David Payne’s horse (Ace High) who is a pretty good animal, I think,” Baker said. “And Trent (Busuttin) knows how to train a Derby winner. He’s trained two. But I think he will stay.”

Greycliffe could go forwardTrainer Matt Cumani anticipates his three-year-old Greycliffe (Tavistock), who was a dominant four length winner in a Benchmark 64 Handicap (2200m) at Seymour on 22 October, will be ridden positively in the Victoria Derby. The lightly raced colt, who will be ridden by Jordan Childs from barrier nine, raced on the pace at his last start. Cumani hopes Greycliffe can settle better than midfield in what will be the Ballarat-based trainer’s first Group One runner.

Shoals peaking for MyerGroup Two-winning three-year-old Shoals (Fastnet Rock) is ready to peak in tomorrow’s Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m), according to trainer Anthony Freedman. The well-bred filly, who won the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m) first up at Moonee Valley, has been runner-up at her past two starts, the latest when second to Aloisia (Azamour) in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on 14 October. Dean Yendall rides Shoals tomorrow at 50 kilograms. “Her work on Tuesday was very good. The blinkers are off, winkers and everything is off, so I think she’s set up to run very well,” Freedman said. “It’s always been on her radar.”

Tom Melbourne can repay puntersEuropean import Tom Melbourne (Dylan

@anz_news

Morning Briefing

Thomas) has been often criticised by punters for his perceived habit of throwing away wins, but jockey Glen Boss is confident the seven-year-old can repay them in tomorrow’s Kennedy Mile (registered as Cantala Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington. Formerly trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, Tom Melbourne has been trained by Chris Waller this preparation, finishing second on four consecutive occasions before a sixth-placed run in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) last start. Tom Melbourne has drawn barrier six in the $1,000,000 race.

Hiyaam a value chance in WakefulExperienced and often understated trainer Mick Price believes three-year-old Hiyaam (High Chaparral) can continue her consistent form and be one of the main chances in tomorrow’s Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Flemington. The filly, who won a maiden first up at Ballarat on 24 September, was runner-up to fellow Wakeful Stakes contender Bring Me Roses (High Chaparral) in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and third last start in the Ethereal Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) won by Pinot (Pierro). Hiyaam will be ridden again by Michael Dee from barrier three.

Moroney hoping to secure Cup startIn order to gain a gain a ballot exception in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), trainer Mike Moroney might be forced to run Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner Vengeur Masque (Monsun) in the Lexus Stakes (registered as Hotham Handicap) (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington on Saturday, but he would prefer not to. "Ideally I'd rather not run but I think there's a good chance that he'll come through it well enough now that he's a bit stronger," Moroney said. "But that's still a guess, and I'd rather not be guessing. I'd rather just be going into the Cup by getting him ready on the (training) track. But it's probably not going to be. I'd like to run him in the Cup this year."

Sweet Flemington return for SherryTrainer Brent Stanley says he is looking forward to Group Two winner Sweet Sherry (Bel Esprit) lining up in the Linlithgow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) down the Flemington straight tomorrow. Sweet Sherry has showed affinity for the straight course, winning the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on her first career start, but she has not run at Flemington since she finished fourth in the Moomba Plate (Listed, 1100m) in March. Sweet Sherry will race from barrier nine with Noel Callow booked to take the ride.

Straight to suit NietaTrainer John Thompson is confident that Nieta (Nicconi) will be suited better by the Flemington straight tomorrow and believes the mare did not handle Caulfield on her last start in the Alinghi Stakes (Listed, 1100m). The five-year-old mare runs in the Begonia Belle Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and she looks set to face 11 rivals from barrier four with Hugh Bowman booked to take the ride.

In Times Of War out to end run of outsTrainer Chris Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth will be hoping In Times Of War (Street Cry) can end a frustrating run of second place finishes when the mare runs in a Benchmark 82 (1100m) at Rosehill tomorrow. The mare has run 11 times in her career winning two, but has finished on the other nine occasions and will be looked to break a thread of four consecutive runner-up finishes. "Hopefully she can go one better. She'll be in the first two anyway," Duckworth said. "She's just got one short, sharp burst and it just needs to be utilised at the right stage in the race to try and attack them late. She needs to be cuddled as late as possible rather than playing your hand early."

Lack of experience against NeutralityDespite co-trainer Paul Snowden believing Neutrality (Sebring) is not short of talent, however, he fears a lack of experience may impede his chance to win the Lack Group - West Tradies Plate (1100m) at Rosehill tomorrow. Purchased by the China Horse

Club for $400,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the Middlebrook Valley draft, Neutrality is out of the Group Three winner Dama De Noche (Snippets), making the colt a half-brother to Listed winner Nocturnelle (Elusive Quality), the dam of Neutrality’s Group Three-winning stablemate Dracarys (Snitzel). “He has a lot of natural ability and he showed that in his trial at Wyong,’’ Paul Snowden said. “He's a bit more untapped than Legislation, this horse is still getting to where he needs to be mentally. All the same he's shown he has some ability.’’

My Country to be kept to sprint distanceCo-trainer Paul Snowden says talented mare My Country (Poet’s Voice), a last start winner at Randwick in a Benchmark 88 (1200m), is appreciating being kept to 1200 metres this preparation. The daughter of Poet’s Voice (Dubawi), who ran fourth in the P J Bell Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last April, will be ridden by Andrew Adkins in a Benchmark 92 handicap (1200m) at Rosehill tomorrow. “We’re going to keep her to six furlongs this time. We tried to string her out and it just doesn’t suit her,” Paul Snowden said. McDougall to make most of opportunitySydney-based apprentice Blaike McDougall admits his riding last season was below his best, but is determined to make up for it and is keen to make the most of his opportunities at Rosehill. Apprenticed to John Thompson at Randwick, McDougall rode two winners at Randwick last Saturday and is excited about the prospects of the Angela Davies-trained Waitandwatch (Time Thief) in a Benchmark 85 handicap (1100m) tomorrow. “I've been waiting for a long time for him to come back,’’ McDougall said. “I know what Angela's like with them first-up, she's a speciality at it and he was very well placed last prep. He's a monster but a very well natured horse. He begins so well, he travels well and does everything right. I've no doubt he is ready to take that step.’’

Blinkers go on New TipperaryTrainer Joe Pride has added blinkers to

New Tipperary (High Chaparral) for the five-year-old’s open handicap (1800m) race at Rosehill tomorrow. New Tipperary, who has won six of his 17 starts, has been unplaced in three starts this campaign but Pride expects to see a vast improvement from the gelding with a gear change and a firmer surface at Rosehill. New Tipperary has five rivals tomorrow including Dark Eyes (Snitzel) and the Bjorn Baker-trained stablemates Embley (High Chaparral) and Collateral (Excellent Art).

Boss to ride Ventura StormSingapore-based Australian jockey Glen Boss, who rode Makybe Diva (Desert King) to three Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) victories, will partner the Lindsay Park-trained Ventura Storm (Zoffany) in Tuesday’s race. Boss picked up the ride after Regan Bayliss elected to not appeal a seven-meeting suspension he incurred for his winning ride on Saddle The Sun (Helmet) at Bendigo on Wednesday. A European import, Ventura Storm was runner-up to Winx (Street Cry) in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) before finishing unplaced in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and subsequently being diagnosed with a foot issue.

Hayes pleased with Cup contenders’ Flemington gallopsLindsay Park’s Melbourne Cup contenders Boom Time (Flying Spur) and Ventura Storm (Zoffany) took to the Flemington track yesterday for the last piece of serious work ahead of the $6,000,000 race. Senior trainer David Hayes said after the gallop, while he found it hard to split the pair he is leaning marginally on the side of the Caulfield Cup winner. "There wasn't much between them, but maybe a slight leaning to Boom Time,” Hayes told Racing.com. “He had bruising on his heel [in the days after the Caulfield Cup] and with a couple of days in the water walker and we've readjusted his shoes, he's responded brilliantly without missing too much work.” Hayes will be hoping the pair will be joined in the race by stablemate Harlem (Champs Elysees), who will try and secure a ballot exemption when he lines up in tomorrow’s Lexus Stakes.

Schofield impressed by Nakeeta

Glyn Schofield says the trip to Werribee to partner his Melbourne Cup contender, the Iain Jardine-trained Nakeeta (Sixties Icon), was a worthwhile exercise. Although European import Nakeeta was not out to break the clock, Schofield was impressed with the way he handled himself. "He's not a big strapping horse. He's a little fellow, quite lively but he certainly gave me a nice piece of work this morning," Schofield said. "He got into a nice rhythm and stretched his legs out nicely and pulled up without a blow. He's obviously very clear-winded and gave me a really good feel."

Marmelo improved since Caulfield Cup runOn inspection at Werribee Quarantine Centre yesterday Hugh Bowman believes his Melbourne Cup mount Marmelo (Duke Of Marmalade) had improved since his encouraging Caulfield Cup run on 21 October. The Hughie Morrison-trained European import ran sixth in the Group One race, his first start in Australia, after coming from near the rear of the field from barrier ten. “Maybe he would have been better for not having a run but I don’t know,” Bowman said. “History would say he’d be better for having the experience and I’m pleased he had it. In my opinion, it brought him on. He certainly knows what he’s here for and he’s working with purpose. He’s really feeling good.”

Bowman respects rival HumidorHugh Bowman also respects rival Melbourne Cup hope Humidor (Teofilo), a Darren Weir-trained five-year-old who gave champion mare Winx (Street Cry) a scare in last week’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). "If he can stay the 3200

metres then he's a big chance," Bowman said. "Any horse that can get that close to Winx when she's at her best is worthy of respect in any race but he has to get the trip." A winner of the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) this campaign. Humidor ran fifth in the Caulfield Cup at his previous start. Rival McEvoy wary of AlmandinIn-form jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who will ride Red Cardinal (Montjeu) in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, believes the Lloyd Williams-owned Almandin (Monsun) could be one of the major obstacles standing in the way of the rider making it back-to-back wins in the $6,000,000 race. McEvoy rode Almandin to win the Melbourne Cup last year. "He's come back in better form than he was 12 months ago, has a turn of foot and loves a genuine tempo, which he should get," McEvoy told Racing.com. "He's the one we've all got to beat but I was happy with the way Red Cardinal galloped this morning." First up test for TiyatrolaniStakes-winning mare Tiyatrolani (Captain Sonador) has won twice first up from three attempts and resumes again tomorrow at Doomben in an open handicap (1050m), but trainer Tony Gollan is reserved about her chances. Bred by Eureka Stud, Tiyatrolani will be a valuable broodmare when she retires and Gollan is looking at ways to get more stakes wins for her. "Exactly which way she goes this campaign we will have to evaluate after Saturday's run," Gollan said. "The Magic Millions Fillies and Mares race is one way to go but she would have to show us she is up to it at 1200 metres. Tiyatrolani faces a stiffer task first up this time against open company horses so we won't get too carried away just yet. She did run fourth to Winning Rupert at 1300 metres so that is some type of guide."

Impressive juvenile trial winner to start at DoombenPremier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan also has juvenile Ef Troop (Spirit Of Boom), a barrier trial winner by eight and a half lengths on 31 October, having his first start in the two-year-olds colts and geldings handicap (1050m) at

Doomben tomorrow. A $70,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, Ef Troop is from the first crop of Gollan’s former Group One winner Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo). "Trials and races are different things but he goes okay. We will see how he is later this week before deciding whether to run on Saturday. He can always wait another week," Gollan said.

Firmer surface to suit Sir DonaldToowoomba trainer Michael Nolan is blaming a heavy track for the below par first up performance of talented sprinter Sir Donald (I Am Invincible). The four-year-old gelding will have his second start this campaign when he lines up in an open handicap (1050m) at Doomben. "I don't mind a thunderstorm or a bit of rain for him. But we had heavy rain all week and the track was wet to say the least," Nolan said. "The run was totally out of character for him." Apprentice Tiffani Brooker will take the ride on Sir Donald, who has won five of his ten starts.

Erratic Tarzan back on trackTrainer Stuart Kendrick is hopeful he has found the key to talented sprinter Tarzan (Drumbeats) and plans to back the five-year-old up in an open handicap (1050m) at Doomben on Saturday. Tarzan, who has won six of his 17 starts, was victorious over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday in a course record 56.13 seconds. “He has won at Doomben and been placed there. I think he had unfairly been labelled a hard-to-handle horse,” Kendrick said. “But he isn’t. It is just there is only one way to ride him. You can’t try to ride a pretty race because he resents it. You just have to let him run.”

Oaks day next for Supply And DemandGrafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) winner Supply And Demand (Sebring) will use the Chatham Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on Thursday as a precursor to a trip to Perth for the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) hope. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained five-year-old was runner-up in the Filante Handicap (1400m) when resuming at Randwick on 28 October.

Impending was runner-up to In Her Time (Time Thief) in the Sydney Stakes (registered as City Tattersalls Lightning) (Listed, 1200m) first up on 14 October. Brenton Avdulla will ride fellow Darley Classic contender Terravista (Captain Rio) and Blake Shinn will ride the Kris Lees-trained Clearly Innocent (Not A Single Doubt).

Piggott attending Melbourne CupFormer champion jockey Lester Piggott, who turns 82 on Sunday, is in Australia for next week’s Melbourne Cup, a race the legendary rider never had a chance to participate in. “A lot has changed in racing since I was riding,” Piggott said. “I was asked to come out and ride in the Melbourne Cup but couldn’t make it.” Piggott did ride in Australia during the 1990s when he had a stint with the Domeland Syndicate, with his best win the 1995 Black Opal Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on Zadok (Opera Prince). The jockey has nominated the Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock part-owned Tiberian (Tiberias Caesar) as his fancy for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup at Flemington. "He's a nice horse and moving well,” Piggott said of the Group Two winner. The Alain Couetil-trained Tiberian is Olivier Peslier’s first ride in the race. Bayliss to ride in New ZealandVictorian jockey Jake Bayliss, the elder brother of Regan Bayliss, will ride in New Zealand after being offered a position by prominent trainers Mike Moroney, Pam Gerard, Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott. Bayliss will be based at Matamata where O’Sullivan and Scott’s Wexford Stables and trans-Tasman trainer Moroney are based. “There might be 100 horses in training between them, so hopefully I’ll be flat out riding for them and get some outside rides as well,” Bayliss said. “I’m going okay here in Melbourne, but the opportunity is a good one and it may open up bigger things in the Moroney camp when I come back.” Bayliss

could be based in New Zealand for six months, with his first meeting possibly at Waipa on Wednesday.

Sumstreetsumwhere told to Hong KongWith smart three-year-old Sumstreetsumwhere (Highly Recommended) set to continue his career in Hong Kong, Jason Waddell will not be forced to make a difficult decision who he rides in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton on 11 November. Waddell had the choice between the Stephen Marsh-trained Sumstreetsumwhere or the Tony Pike-trained Canterbury Stakes (Listed, 1600m) winner Ever Loyal (Sebring) in the classic. “He won’t be going to Christchurch, it’s all confirmed and he’ll be off to Hong Kong,” Marsh said. “I liked his chances for Riccarton, but that’s the way it goes and he’s on his way.”

Waddell happy with Ever LoyalJason Waddell has said he is happy to be riding the Tony Pike-trained Ever Loyal in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, having had the choice between riding the gelding and Sumstreetsumwhere made for him with the latter being sold to Hong Kong. “I couldn’t really split the two horses so it saves me making the choice,” Waddell said. “I’ve thought he was a Guineas horse ever since I sat on him in a trial in March, but he got beaten in his first two starts which I didn’t expect. He’s come right though and he’s got to be a massive chance.”

Snow Secret in peak conditionTrainer Shaune Ritchie is confident Snow Secret (Sakhee's Secret) can run well in tomorrow’s Fielding Gold Cup (Listed, 2100m) at Awapuni. The mare will be looking to secure her first win in stakes company, having run second in the Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) last season and was most recently seen occupying that same position on her last start in the Rotorua Challenge Plate (Listed, 1950m) last month. “She was very brave that day as it was only her second run back and she probably just knocked

up in the last few strides,” Ritchie said. She ran second to Lizzie L’Amour in the Waikato Cup last year so after finishing second again the other day I think she deserves her turn.” Low key start for stakes-bound WhisperingSmart mare Whispering (Darci Brahma) will resume in a Benchmark 75 (1200m) at Pukekura today with trainer Allan Sharrock saying that she will have stakes assignments later on this season. The six-year-old mare has not been seen since she ran eighth in the Munns the Man's Store Handicap (1400m) at Waikato in May. “She always races well fresh and she’s had one jump-out and won that,” Sharrock said. “I scratched her when she drew 14 of 14 here last time and now she’s drawn seven of seven, but there looks like there’s lots of speed in the race. There’s the Wairarapa Breeders’ Stakes and the Anniversary, they look nice races for her and she’ll get a mile.”

Retirement awaits for Sofia RosaGroup One winner Sofia Rosa (Makfi) will have her penultimate start in the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham on 9 December, with trainer Stephen Marsh revealing her swansong race will be in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Sofia Rosa won the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2016, but has not won a race since that victory. “She’s having a freshen-up and then she’ll go to Wellington and her swansong race will be the Zabeel Classic,” trainer Stephen Marsh said.

Sharrock being patient with Ladies FirstTrainer Allan Sharrock has said he is in no rush with talented mare Ladies First (Dylan Thomas), but has earmarked a tilt in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The five-year-old won the Rangitikei Gold Cup (Listed, 1500m) in May, before following up that victory in the Wanganui Cup (Listed, 2040m) three weeks later and has not been since that victory. “The owners would like to have a dig at the Auckland Cup with her and that’s not until March so there’s plenty of time,” Sharrock said. “She’s a good mare and time was always going to be her friend.”

Moore unveils plans for RocketeerTrainer John Moore says he intends to run Rocketeer (Smart Missile) in the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, with Moore eyeing a tilt in one of the lucrative international races in December. Rocketeer was purchased by Moody Racing for $150,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the Edinburgh Park draft and was Group Three-placed when trained by Mick Price in Australia before being sold to Hong Kong in December 2016. “Rocketeer’s already been well-seasoned, so yes, definitely, he’s under consideration for the upcoming international races,” Moore said. “If he does go to the internationals, you'd be looking at a Hong Kong Gold Cup into a Derby, maybe stay away from the four-year-old classics.”

Muffri’Ha is one of 55 stakes winners for Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic).

Kodiac surpasses Sunday Silence recordAfter matching Sunday Silence’s (Halo) record of 51 two-year-old winners in a calendar year at Dundalk on Wednesday evening, the Tally-Ho Stud-based Kodiac (Danehill) surpassed the record yesterday when Statehood became his 52nd juvenile winner after he landed the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (7f) at Lingfield. Bred by Patrick Cassidy, the record-breaking Statehood was a 200,000 guineas purchase by John Ferguson at the Tattersalls

December Foal Sale in 2015. Kodiac stood the 2017 season for a fee of €50,000.

River Boyne makes 70,000gnsAt the time of going to press, River Boyne (Dandy Man) was topping the fourth day of the Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale after Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal went to 70,000 guineas to secure the colt from trainer Gordon Elliott’s Cullentra House Stables draft. Catalogued as Lot 1261, the colt has had three starts in his career, with his best performance coming when he ran second on his most recent start at Newcastle on 24 October. US Navy Flag handed dirt mission

Multiple Group One winner US Navy Flag (War Front) will run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Del Mar on Saturday, but trainer Aidan

O’Brien won’t be without representation in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 8f) today with the trainer intending to run Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) in the Grade One. "With US Navy Flag, he's an unbelievable horse—handled everything we've thrown at him," O'Brien told Blood-Horse. "And it seems like the more difficult the assignment, the more he has come through."

Buick backs Ribchester to bounce BackThe Richard Fahey-trained Ribchester (Iffraaj) will look to secure his fifth race at the Group / Grade One level when he lines up in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) at Del Mar tomorrow, in what will be his last race before he retires to stud. The four-year-old will be ridden by William Buick in the Grade One and Buick is confident he can bounce back to form, having been beaten into second by Persuasive (Dark Angel) on his last start in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot last month. "I wouldn't have any worries [about the quick

turnaround]. Richard (Fahey) has handled the horse beautifully, he knows the horse inside out and is a top-class trainer – he wouldn't send him here to make up the numbers. I have every confidence the horse is here in good shape,” Buick told the Racing Post.

Bin Suroor back at Jebel AliSaeed Bin Suroor has his first runners at Jebel Ali for 14 years today at the beginning of a new United Arab Emirates season. It is the first of 62 fixtures, culminating in Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) night at Meydan on 31 March. The first of ten Dubai World Cup Carnival meetings is at Meydan on 11 January. Bin Suroor said: “This year we have a few horses suitable for early-season races so we have shipped them to Dubai. These two have both run this month in England so are race-fit and have taken the travelling well. They should be very competitive.” The trainer will saddle Military Parade (Dutch Art) in the first race, while he will also send out Perfect Sense (Sepoy) in a handicap over 6 furlongs.

A marathon session of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale on Wednesday brought with it a further reminder of

the international appeal of British and Irish bloodstock, as parties from all corners of the globe drove prices upwards at Park Paddocks.

The session, the highest grossing in Autumn Horses In Training Sale history, generated turnover of 10,799,600 guineas - 12 per cent jump on 2016's return, an average of 38,708 guineas - up 15 per cent and a median of 22,000 guineas - up 29 per cent year-on-year. From 322 offered lots 279 changed hands for a clearance rate of 87 per cent.

The session was topped by the striking Solomon's Bay, with Rupert Pritchard-Gordon getting one up on Anthony Stroud with a bid of 390,000 guineas to claim the progressive son of Darley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill), who was offered by Roger Varian's Carlburg Stables and offered as Lot 1136.

The three-year-old won three races for Varian, including this year's Surrey Stakes (Listed, 7f) and a Kempton conditions event on his most recent outing, where he touched off the classy Blue De Vega (Lope De Vega).

"He's been bought to go to Hong Kong," said Pritchard-Gordon, who secured Solomon's Bay on behalf of an undisclosed client. "He's a horse that's versatile, he can go over six furlongs or a

mile and has plenty of speed. He's got a profile that looks geared towards the programme over in Hong Kong. He won't be running again here, that's for sure."

The colt was bred and raced by Prince A A Faisal, and is out of the Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer) mare Gentle On My Mind, a sister to the dam of Taghrooda (Sea The Stars) and from the strong Aga Khan family of Estimate (Monsun) and Ebadiyla (Sadler’s Wells).

"He hasn't done a lot wrong - he's a three-year-old with a bit of class and a high rating," continued Pritchard-Gordon. "He's a horse with recent form and looked in great shape. He's got plenty of experience but hasn't been over-raced so hopefully he'll have a future over there."

Earlier in the session Pritchard-Gordon went to 310,000 guineas to land dual winner Melting Dew (Cacique) from the Juddmonte draft, who was catalogued as Lot 1096.

"He'll stay in England, though I'm not sure yet who will train him, that's for my client to decide," said Pritchard-Gordon.

"Hopefully he'll be a nice horse for the good mile-and-a-half handicaps next season. He's a good stamp of a horse, an athletic colt - a great goer. He still has some maturing to do. The family all improve with age and this colt has plenty of size and scope so we're happy to get him."

The three-year-old son of Cacique (Danehill) earned a peak Racing Post Rating (RPR) of

95 from ten starts for Sir Michael Stoute, and is a half-brother to Group One winner Winsili (Dansili) and from the further family of Group/Grade One winners Meteor Storm (Bigstone) and Polish Summer (Polish Precedent).

The Juddmonte draft saw 27 lots bring turnover of 1,401,500 guineas.

Having finished underbidder on a number of noteworthy lots over the opening two sessions of the sale, Guy Mulcaster got on the scoresheet early on Wednesday when getting the better of Alastair Donald for the progressive stayer Brimham Rocks (Fastnet Rock) at 340,000 guineas.

The three-year-old son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), who was bred and owned by David and Vimy Aykroyd and catalogued as Lot 873, has won four races for Ralph Beckett during 2017, improving his RPR by 40 pounds in the process. He was last seen winning a York handicap over 1m6f, and now heads to Australia to join the yard of Chris Waller.

"It's been a struggle this week but that's the joy of an auction!" said Mulcaster. "He'll go back to Australia and go back into the system like the rest of them - we don't have any huge targets for him at the moment, we'll just see how he acclimatises and take him along step by step. It's worked in the past and hopefully it'll work again."

Mulcaster was understandably delighted to have secured such an upwardly mobile recruit, particularly as the horse had been on his radar for some time.

"We identified him back in August and tried to buy him then but weren't able to," he said. "But we've been lucky enough to get him here. He came from a good stable and I know Ralph really liked the horse, so will be disappointed to lose him."

Mulcaster went on to make a number of six-figure acquisitions on behalf of Waller as the session progressed, including the useful Naval Warfare (Born To Sea), who was catalogued as Lot 957, for 160,000 guineas and and the three-time winner Opposition (Dalakhani) at 100,000 guineas, who was offered as Lot 913.

After purchasing Alward (Aqlaam) for 35,000 guineas from the Shadwell draft at last year’s Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale, Mulcaster snapped up his half-brother Tansheet (Shamardal) from the same draft at this year’s renewal for 110,000 guineas on Wednesday.

Catalogued as Lot 1017, the colt looks set to join his half-brother, who was most recently seen running second in the City Tattersalls Club Cup (Listed, 2400m), at Waller’s stable in Australia. Two-year-old Tansheet has run three times, breaking his maiden on his second start at Newcastle in September.

Mulcaster also took home another from the Shadwell draft, winning gelding Raqeeq (Champs Elysees) for 50,000 guineas, who was catalogued as Lot 1013.

New South Wales-based trainer Matthew Smith was also active at Park Paddocks on Wednesday, purchasing Fierce Impact, a winning son of champion Japanese sire Deep Impact (Sunday Silence), for 120,000 guineas. Catalogued as Lot 1038, the colt is out of the Grade Three winner Keiai Gerbera (Smarty Jones), while further back he is from the same family as Grade Three winner Boundary (Danzig). He was sold by Jamie Railton as agent for Qatar Racing.

Another lot to break the 300,000 guineas barrier was Frozen Angel, who went the way of former Hong Kong-based trainer Sean Woods at 335,000 guineas. The son of Dark Angel (Acclamation), a £165,000 yearling owned by Michael Owen and Tom Cleverley among others, proved to be a useful juvenile, having finished a close fourth in the Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) and runner-up in the Prix Robert Papin (Gr 2, 1100m).

Saudi Arabia's King's Cup (KSA Gr 1, 2400m) has gone the way of Prince Faisal bin Khalid on no fewer than 16 occasions, and the owner will be hopeful of landing the prize again having parted with 260,000 guineas for

Alwahsh (Dubawi) from the Shadwell draft after his representative Ted Voute outbid the likes of Luca Cumani and Guy Mulcaster.

The three-year-old colt, who was catalogued as Lot 857, broke his maiden in June and was last seen running a creditable third in a big field York handicap (1m2¼f).

"He's just a beautiful horse and hopefully he's one for the King's Cup," said Voute. "He's a mile and a quarter horse, which you need, and they have to be rated 85 or above."

Also on his way to Saudi Arabia is Lot 1103 - Pharaonic after Voute went to 230,000 guineas for the Juddmonte-consigned colt. The three-year-old son of Dansili is a half-brother to Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) winner and Ballylinch Stud resident New Bay (Dubawi).

Sackville Donald continued to play at the top of the market, and by the close of Wednesday's

session topped the buyers' table by total spend having signed for six lots at 1,036,000 guineas. Among the haul was Listed winner Morando (Kendargent), who went the way of Alastair Donald for 290,000 guineas. The gelding was offered by Roger Varian’s Carlburg Stables draft and catalogued as Lot 1131.

The four-year-old Kendargent (Kendor) gelding has won four races for Roger Varian and achieved a peak RPR of 116. He was last seen finishing a good second in the Prix Andre Baboin (Gr 3, 1900m).

"He's a ready-made Group-race performer who is lightly raced for a four-year-old," said Donald. "He could be one for an international campaign.

A very strongly run Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) resulted in Winx (Street Cry) breaking the track record in a day of achievements for the

champion mare at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The pace was set by the Darren Weir-

trained Gailo Chop (Deportivo), a stablemate of the runner-up Humidor (Teofilo), the French-bred import running along at a deceptively fast tempo which saw him clock a fast first 1600 metres (from the 2000m to the 400m) in 1:34.80.

Hugh Bowman had Winx racing back in fifth place before making an early wide move on passing the 800 metres mark, obviously not wanting to risk any chance of having the great mare held up for clear running by riding more conservatively.

She then travelled deep, until taking the lead shortly after turning for home, but then had to dig deep when challenged by Humidor - a difficult horse that had been ridden patiently and skilfully by Blake Shinn prior to making a timely bid on straightening.

In a hard fought finish Winx called on all her reserves to prevail by a long neck from Humidor – that pair dominating the exciting final stages, finishing over four lengths ahead of the third-placed Folkswood (Exceed And Excel).

Time for the race was 2:02.94 (12.05 200m rate), equivalent to 2000 metres in 2:00.53 – that time narrowly bettering Winx’s own Moonee Valley record for 2040 metres of 2:02.98 set in winning her first Cox Plate in 2015.

Winx’s individual sectional times were also impressive, even if tempered by the fact that Saturday’s Moonee Valley track returned exceptionally fast times throughout the day.

Her final 2000 metres being clocked in 1:58.67, last 1600 metres in 1:33.93, last 1400 metres in 1:22.36, last 1200 metres in 1:10.56, last 1000 metres in 58.38, last 800 metres in 46.35, last 600 metres in 34.98, last 400 metres in 23.89 with her final 200 metres in 11.89.

The victory, her third successive Cox Plate,

was also her 22nd successive win and her 15th at Group One level and it took Winx’s prize money to $15,627,925 earned from 26 wins and three seconds from 32 career starts.

The runner-up Humidor, a dual Group One winner, staged a career-best performance in getting so close to Winx at the finish of the famous weight-for-age race.

Returning to racing in blinkers, Humidor was handled brilliantly by Shinn who got the often wayward gelding into a comfort zone at the tail of the nine-horse field before deftly navigating to have him in a challenging position on turning for home.

The Darren Weir-trained gelding also returned fast closing sectional times, many being similar or even the same as Winx on two occasions.

Humidor’s final 2000 metres being clocked in 1:58.78, last 1600 metres in 1:33.93, last 1400 metres in 1:22.39, last 1200 metres in 1:10.65, last 1000 metres in 58.41, last 800 metres in 46.43, last 600 metres in 34.98, last 400 metres in 23.95 with her final 200 metres in 11.98.

Earlier in the programme, the Bjorn Baker-trained mare Lubiton (Snitzel) also set a

Moonee Valley track record in taking out the Tesio Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m).

In a strong front-running performance, Lubiton held on well to score by just over a length in a time of 1:34.42, which bettered the record for 1600 metres set by Cabeza (Zabeel) in December 2010 of 1:34.78.

Then in the Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m), the Darren Weir-trained Lucky Hussler (Husson) returned to form at his fourth run this preparation in coming off a very solid tempo to win by three lengths in the quick time of 1:34.56 – only 0.14 seconds outside of Lubiton’s newly established record.

The quick pace was due to the front-running tactics by Hugh Bowman aboard the Chris Waller-trained Religify (Choisir) who clocked a fast mid-race section of 57.37 for his 1000 metres (from the 1400m to the 400m).

The consistent and hardy Religify then fought back gamely, his effort of holding on for second being full of merit.

While another of the highlights of the Cox Plate day meeting, was the most impressive performance of the New Zealand-bred filly Aloisia (Azamour), who came off a very solid pace set by the front-running colt Cliff’s Edge

(Canford Cliffs) in taking out the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) by three and a half lengths.

Time for the full journey was a really smart 2:04.24 (12.18 200m rate), equivalent to 2000 metres in 2:01.80.

Aloisia’s sectionals were also smart, being timed to run her final 2000 metres in 2:01.17, her last 1600 metres in 1:35.72, last 1000 metres in 59.16, last 800 metres in 46.98, last 600 metres in 35.26 with her final 400 metres in 24.04.

The win, her third in seven starts, saw Aloisia immediately promoted to $1.65 favouritism with CrownBet for next Thursday’s VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington where she is now clearly the horse to beat.

While the last word has been reserved for the Toby Edmonds-trained three-year-old gelding Eptimum (Snitzel) who staged a great front-running performance earlier in the day in winning the Red Anchor Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

After crossing quickly to lead from barrier nine, Eptimum was challenged prior to the home turn by the well-performed Single Bullet (Not A Single Doubt) but he fought off that bid on straightening and then dashed clear before scoring by three lengths in the smart time of 1:09.98.

Eptimum really impressed on the watch. His 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m)

being 10.90, 11.60 (400m in 22.50), 10.95 (600m in 33.45), 12.08 (800m in 45.53) with his

final 200 metres in 10.96 to give Eptimum a fast final 1000 metres time of 56.49.

But a feature of the win, which deserves highlighting, was Eptimum’s very fast final 200 metres of 10.96 – rarely is 11.00 seconds broken in the final stages of a race, especially if it has been achieved off a quick tempo, as it was on this occasion.

That alone suggests that Toby Edmonds’ decision to back-up his lightly raced but talented young sprinter in tomorrow’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington may not be the mission impossible it may seem for a three-year-old progressing so quickly in class.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Vinland was resuming after finishing sixth behind She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) in the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) at Randwick in December, he was well away from barrier seven under Andrew Mallyon and soon

settled outside nicely outside the leader. He easily went to the front on straightening and then went on to score

impressively and in good time of 1:22.91. He should be further improved with this being only his third race start, and he looks a colt with a good future.

Purchased by McEvoy Mitchell Racing for $340,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in 2016, Vinland is out of the winning Elusive Quality (Gone West) mare Viking Turf Belle, who was also placed at Group Two Level and her other foal to race is also a winner.

Viking Turf Belle herself is a sister to the dam of Listed winner Valliano (Equiano), while she is also a half-sister to the Group Two-placed mare Sayahailmary (Keep The Faith), who produced South African Grade Two winner Mella Maria (Star Witness).

Further back this is same family as Group Two winner Silver Fun (Saumarez) and Listed winner Silver Rain (Rainbow Quest).

In 2015 Viking Turf Belle produced a colt by Coolmore’s sire champion first season sire Pierro (Lonhro), before foaling a filly by the Darley-based shuttler Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) the following season and she has most recently been covered by Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo).

Sebring (More Than Ready) stands at Widden Stud for a fee of $66,000 (inc GST) and he has sired 33 stakes winners overall, including four Group One winners.

Rekindling RACING POST

There would be serious bragging rights up for grabs if 24-year-old Joseph O'Brien managed to win the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

before his father Aidan did. It could happen too as Rekindling (High

Chaparral) brings some rock-solid Group One form into the race. He has been to battle after battle and has still managed to come out fighting. Ignore him at your peril.

Rekindling concluded his two-year-old campaign by trailing in last of 13 in the

| 15 |

The Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) was next but he had an off day after suffering some traffic congestion. Not to worry, there would be other days.

O'Brien decided to pitch him in against the older boys in the Curragh Cup (Gr 2, 1m6f) and it proved a masterstroke as he dug deep to fend off former Classic winner Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow). That was his first try over the trip and he relished it.

There was no shame whatsoever in finding the mighty Order Of St George (Galileo) too good in the Irish St Leger Trial (Gr 3, 1m6f) at the Curragh in August and similar comments apply to his fourth place finish in the St Leger at Doncaster. He was only beaten two lengths.

Rekindling looks tailormade for two miles, but will he feel the effects of a long, hard season? He is only three remember and perhaps a race like the Melbourne Cup may be coming a little too soon in his education.

In tomorrow’s issue of ANZ David Jennings of the Racing Post ponders the chances of Thomas Hobson ahead of his run in the Flemington showpiece.

Friday 3 November 2017

"REKINDLING REALLY IS A JOY TO TRAIN. HE IS SO EASY AND HAS NEVER GIVEN ME A MOMENT'S WORRY. THE ONE CONCERN I WOULD HAVE IS THAT

HE'S BEEN ON THE GO A LONG TIME. HE WAS IN GREAT FORM BEFORE HE LEFT AND HAS TAKEN HIS RACING WELL."

JOSEPH O'BRIEN, TRAINER OF REKINDLING

Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2000m). He has since moved from David Wachman to O'Brien and emerged as one of Ireland's leading hopes in the Melbourne Cup.

His got off to a winning start as a three-year-old when edging out Douglas Macarthur (Galileo) in the Ballysax Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) on the second Sunday in April. Subsequent St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6.5f) winner Capri (Galileo) was only fourth that day so the form has stood the test of time.

It was then onto the Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) at York where he far from disgraced himself when fourth to Permian (Teofilo) having looked a serious threat entering the final furlong of the contest.

DJ'S RATINGIt is a huge ask for a three-year-old to win a Melbourne Cup on his seventh start of the season having been embroiled in some bruising

battles along the way. He arguably has the best form

in the race but others will be fresher and

that could prove his undoing.

BETTING FORECAST: 7-2iHappily, Rushing Fall, 5iSeptember, 8iJuliet Capulet,Significant Form, 16iMadeline, 20iBest Performance, Capla Temptress,Orbolution, Ultima D, 25iFatale Bere, Now You’re Talking, 33iDixie Moon, MoonDash, Retro, 40iGoodthingstaketime.

VERDICT This looks like being run at no more than a sensible pace, inwhich case the low-drawn runners may prove best placed around

this tight circuit and those in the bottom five stalls are appealing enough toconcentrate on. Happily holds strong claims but more tempting at bigger prices arethe speedier-looking NOW YOU’RE TALKING and Madeline, who are closelymatched on their respectable runs in the Cheveley Park. Had the winner of that race,Clemmie, lined up here she’d most likely have been favourite. The time was quickerthan the Group 1 Middle Park on the same card, and the fifth has won since. NowYou’re Talking and Madeline have stamina to prove but their pace is a useful assetfor this track and Joseph O’Brien’s runner, who was returning from an extendedbreak last time, may have the most improvement in her. There isn’t much betweenBest Performance and Ultima D, and they have enough potential to have themin the mix from their handy gates.[Ron Wood]

VERDICT It’s unlikely anything will live with Mor Spirit if he’s at the samelevel as when winning the Met Mile at Belmont in June, but he’s

been off since and it’s questionable whether he’s coming into this in the same form.Sharp Azteca, runner-up in that race, looks primed to go well, and there’s a solidcase for Accelerate and Practical Joke, so a few to consider. However, CUPID,a stablemate of Mor Spirit, might be the answer. He’s quirky but has bundles of talentand this race may set up ideally. This looks likely to be run at a strong pace, whichshould see Cupid cruise along in behind, and he could find some of his main rivalssoftened up by the time he comes to challenge.[Ron Wood]

VERDICT Like in the earlier fillies’ race, speedy runners drawn low may bethe way to go and, all considered, not least the prices, there’s no

getting away from SANDS OF MALI. He must prove his stamina and rebound froma disappointing run in the Middle Park, but he was only 9-2 that day and his earlierform is quite smart - he’s joint-top on RPRs with Mendelssohn. The selection nowgets Lasix and a leading local jockey, and from gate 3 he should be positioned tohave every chance. Mendelssohn has good claims, and Beckford and JamesGarfield are other likely types. The two Mark Casse runners may be best of a hometeam that does not look strong.[Ron Wood]

BETTING FORECAST: 5-2iStellar Wind, 7-2iElate, Forever Unbridled, 6iParadiseWoods, 7iAbel Tasman, 25iChampagne Room, 33iRomantic Vision,50iMopotism.

VERDICT If PARADISE WOODS (nap) can get in a comfortable rhythmup front then the others may not peg her back. She must clear

Champagne Room, which she should do, and then hope Victor Espinoza isn’t tooaggressive on Stellar Wind, but that mare can be a sluggish starter, and ParadiseWoods is taken to dominate. Trained by Richard Mandella, who won this twice withthe brilliant Beholder, the selection is a tremendously fast filly - by far the fastest ofthe 3yos on speed figures. Her maiden win came over just 5.5f (third has since beenGrade 1 placed). She then hammered Abel Tasman in the 8.5f Grade 1 Santa AnitaOaks, and the third from that race has also since won at the top level (Mopotismfourth). Things went wrong afterwards, but she got back on track with another Grade1 score on her latest start and they should have her to catch. Stellar Wind may lookgood on paper but she hasn’t been impressing this year, and if they get racing toosoon Forever Unbridled might be the one.[Ron Wood]
